RESUMO

Cachexia is very common in cancer patients and predicts a poor prognosis; however, the molecular basis for progress in these individuals remains unclear, especially the effect of tumors on the hypothalamus energy regulation center. To investigate the regulatory pathway of tumors associated with hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons known as appetite-inhibiting neurons, we conducted observations both on patients and mice models. Results showed that the highly expressed exocrine semaphorin 3D (SEMA3D) both in cachexia patients and mice was positively related to the expression of POMC and its proteolytic peptide. Compared with the control group, mice inoculated with the SEMA3D-knockout C26 cell line decreased the activity of POMC neurons resulting in a 1.3-fold increase in food intake, a 22.2% increase in body weight, and reduced skeletal muscle and fat catabolism. The effect of SEMA3D on cachexia progression can be partially alleviated by knocking-down POMC expression in the brain. In terms of mechanism, SEMA3D enhances the activity of POMC neurons by activating the expression of NRP2 (membrane receptor) and PlxnD1 (intracellular receptor). Our research revealed the overexpression of SEMA3D in tumors works as an activator of POMC neurons, which may play a vital role in suppressing appetite and promoting catabolic metabolism.

RESUMO

Lead poisoning is globally concerning, yet limited testing hinders effective interventions in most countries. We aimed to create annual maps of county-specific blood lead levels in China from 1980 to 2040 using a machine learning model. Blood lead data from China were sourced from 1180 surveys published between 1980 and 2022. Additionally, regional statistical figures for 15 natural and socioeconomic variables were obtained or estimated as predictors. A machine learning model, using the random forest algorithm and 2973 generated samples, was created to predict county-specific blood lead levels in China from 1980 to 2040. Geometric mean blood lead levels in children (i.e., age 14 and under) decreased significantly from 104.4 µg/L in 1993 to an anticipated 40.3 µg/L by 2040. The number exceeding 100 µg/L declined dramatically, yet South Central China remains a hotspot. Lead exposure is similar among different groups, but overall adults and adolescents (i.e., age over 14), females, and rural residents exhibit slightly lower exposure compared to that of children, males, and urban residents, respectively. Our predictions indicated that despite the general reduction, one-fourth of Chinese counties rebounded during 2015-2020. This slower decline might be due to emerging lead sources like smelting and coal combustion; however, the primary factor driving the decline should be the reduction of a persistent source, legacy gasoline-derived lead. Our approach innovatively maps lead exposure without comprehensive surveys.

RESUMO

Despite ambiguous environmental inputs, top-down attention biases our subjective perception toward the preferred percepts, via modulating prestimulus neural activity or inducing prestimulus sensory templates that carry concrete internal sensory representations of the preferred percepts. In contrast to frequent changes of behavioral goals in the typical cue-target paradigm, human beings are often engaged in a prolonged task state with only 1 specific behavioral goal. It remains unclear how prestimulus neural signals and sensory templates are modulated in the latter case. To answer this question in the present electroencephalogram study on human subjects, we manipulated sustained task demands toward one of the 2 possible percepts in the bistable Ternus display, emphasizing either temporal integration or segregation. First, the prestimulus peak alpha frequency, which gated the temporal window of temporal integration, was effectively modulated by task demands. Furthermore, time-resolved decoding analyses showed that task demands biased neural representations toward the preferred percepts after the full presentation of bottom-up stimuli. More importantly, sensory templates resembling the preferred percepts emerged even before the bottom-up sensory evidence were sufficient enough to induce explicit percepts. Taken together, task demands modulate both prestimulus alpha frequency and sensory templates, to eventually bias subjective perception toward the preferred percepts.

RESUMO

North China type coalfield are gradually mining deep, and the mixing of groundwater is intensified. Hydrogen and oxygen isotopes are important elements for tracing groundwater movement. The fractionation response mechanism under mining conditions is not clear. In this paper, combined with numerical simulation, MixSIAR isotope mixing model and other methods, according to the δD, δ18O and hydrochemical information of various water bodies, the impact of coal mining on hydrogen and oxygen isotope fractionation is analyzed from multiple perspectives. The results show that summer soil water is the main source of recharge for limestone water, accounting for 30.7%-41.5%, and the Zhan River is the main source of recharge for limestone water. Before groundwater recharge, evaporation leads to the increase of δ18O in surface water by 0.31‰-5.58‰, water loss by 1.81%-28.00%, the increase of δ18O in soil water by 0.47‰-6.33‰, and water loss by 2.74%-35.80%. Compared with the coal mining layer, the degree of hydrogen and oxygen isotope drift and water-rock interaction in the coal mine stopping layer are significantly improved. The results of numerical simulation show that the pumping activity reduces the 18O concentration in the mining layer. The ion ratio is used as a new variable to eliminate the influence of water-rock interaction when calculating the mixing ratio. The results show that the limestone water is in a state of receiving external recharge, and mixing effect increases the δ18O in limestone water by 0.86‰ on average, and the δD increases by 0.72‰ on average. The research results explain the controlled process of hydrogen and oxygen isotope fractionation under mining conditions, which is of great significance to coal mine safety production.

RESUMO

Despite the significant threat of cadmium exposure in China, a national-level assessment has been conspicuously absent. This study bridges this critical gap by collecting, geospatial analyzing and multivariable regression analyzing published studies on urinary cadmium levels in Chinese from 1982 to 2021. Our research reveals a notable decline trend in cadmium exposure among Chinese populations. However, this trend varies by region, age and gender group, higher levels are seen in the South (1.04 µg/g cr) compared to the North (0.48 µg/g cr), and in adults (1.08 µg/g cr) relative to children (0.33 µg/g cr), with higher levels being more pronounced in females (6.17 µg/g cr). Urinary cadmium is significantly correlated with rice consumption (P < 0.001), while mining activities have been identified as the dominant factor for cadmium exposure in most regions of China, a trend that is evident both in past decades and is expected to continue into the next decade. These findings underscore the need for region-specific environmental and public health strategies, designed to effectively address the distinct cadmium exposure risks in various regions and among different population groups, thus enhancing protection against the adverse effects of cadmium.

RESUMO

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) based on intracellular Fenton reaction to produce highly cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) has played an essential role in tumor therapy. However, this therapy still needs to be improved by weakly acidic pH and over-expression of glutathione (GSH) in tumor microenvironment (TEM), which hinders its future application. Herein, we reported a multifunctional bimetallic composite nanoparticle MnO2@GA-Fe@CAI based on a metal polyphenol network (MPN) structure, which could reduce intracellular pH and endogenous GSH by remodeling tumor microenvironment to improve Fenton activity. MnO2 nanoparticles were prepared first and MnO2@GA-Fe nanoparticles with Fe3+ as central ion and gallic acid (GA) as surface ligands were prepared by the chelation reaction. Then, carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (CAI) was coupled with GA to form MnO2@GA-Fe@CAI. The properties of the bimetallic composite nanoparticles were studied, and the results showed that CAI could reduce intracellular pH. At the same time, MnO2 could deplete intracellular GSH and produce Mn2+ via redox reactions, which re-established the TME with low pH and GSH. In addition, GA reduced Fe3+ to Fe2+. Mn2+ and Fe2+ catalyzed the endogenous H2O2 to produce high-lever ROS to kill tumor cells. Compared with MnO2, MnO2@GA-Fe@CAI could reduce the tumor weight and volume for the xenograft MDA-MB-231 tumor-bearing mice and the final tumor inhibition rate of 58.09 ± 5.77%, showing the improved therapeutic effect as well as the biological safety. Therefore, this study achieved the high-efficiency CDT effect catalyzed by bimetallic through reshaping the tumor microenvironment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effectiveness of the computed tomographic (CT) volumetric analysis in postoperative lung function assessment and the predicting value for postoperative complications in patients who had segmentectomy for lung cancer. METHODS: CT scanning and pulmonary function examination were performed for 100 patients with lung cancer. CT volumetric analyses were performed by specific software, for the volume of the inspiratory phase (Vin), the mean inspiratory lung density (MLDin), the volume of expiratory phase (Vex), and the mean lung density at expiratory phase (MLDex). Pulmonary function examination results and CT volumetric analysis results were used to predict postoperative lung function. The concordance and correlations of these values were assessed by Bland-Altman analysis and Pearson correlation analysis, respectively. Multivariate binomial logistic regression analysis was executed to assess the associations of CT data with complication occurrence. RESULTS: Correlations between CT scanning data and pulmonary function examination results were significant in both pre- and post-operation (0.8083 ≤ r ≤ 0.9390). Forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), and the ratio of FVC and FEV1 estimated by CT volumetric analyses showed high concordance with those detected by pulmonary function examination. Preoperative (Vin-Vex) and (MLDex- MLDin) values were identified as predictors for post-surgery complications, with hazard ratios of 5.378 and 6.524, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: CT volumetric imaging analysis has the potential to determine the pre- and post-operative lung function, as well as to predict post-surgery complication occurrence in lung cancer patients with pulmonary lobectomy.

RESUMO

The Tibetan partridge (Perdix hodgsoniae) is a widely distributed endemic species in high-altitude areas across the Tibetan Plateau where the hypoxia, lower temperature and high ultraviolet radiation are pivotal factors influencing survival. However, the underlying genetic adaptation of the Tibetan partridge to extreme environments remains uncertain due to limited genomic resources. Similarly, the phylogenetic position of Perdix within Phasianidae remains controversial due to lacking information. Consequently, we de novo assembled and annotated the whole genome of the Tibetan partridge. The genome size was 1.15 Gb with contig N50 of 3.70 Mb. A total of 202.30 Mb (17.61%) repetitive elements and 445,876 perfect microsatellites were identified. A total of 16,845 functionally annotated protein-coding genes were identified in the Tibetan partridge. Genomic phylogenetic analysis across 30 Galliformes species indicated a close relationship between Perdix and typical pheasants composed of Chrysolophus, Symaticus, Phasianus, Crossopilon, and Lophura. However, the phylogenetic relationship of (Perdix + (Chrysolophus + (Syrmaticus + other pheasants))) was different from those of (Perdix + (Syrmaticus + (Chrysolophus + other pheasants))) in previous studies. Comparative genomic results identified NFKB1 and CREBBP positively selected genes related to hypoxia with 3 and 2 Tibetan partridge-specific missense mutations, respectively. Expanded gene families were mainly associated with energy metabolism and steroid hydroxylase activity, meanwhile, contracted gene families were mainly related to immunity and olfactory perception. Our genomic data considerably contribute to the phylogeny of Perdix and the underlying adaptation strategies of the Tibetan partridge to a high-altitude environment.

RESUMO

As the decision-making basis for "safety" in risk management and risk assessment activities, acceptable risk has always been an important topic of risk-related research. Based on the records in the Science Citation Index Expanded database and Social Sciences Citation Index database via the Web of Science Core Collection, 1124 articles or reviews related to acceptable risk in engineering and operations research and management science were retrieved. These documents, published between 1961 and 2021, covered 3056 authors, 75 countries/territories, 1296 institutions, and 323 journals. In this study, bibliometric data such as annual growth trends were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. Through the co-occurrence maps created by CiteSpace and Gephi, the most productive and influential countries/territories, institutions, and authors as well as their cooperation networks were identified. Further analysis was conducted to determine the core publications and publication sources in this field through co-citation analysis. Insights into focus areas and research topics over time were obtained through keyword co-occurrence analysis. This study provides a macroscopic overview of acceptable risk research and may help researchers better understand this research field and predict its dynamic directions.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: (1) To determine the effect of concomitant ipsilateral knee pain (IKP) on short-term outcomes after hip arthroscopic treatment of femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) and (2) to determine whether IKP would improve with surgery. METHODS: Data between September 2021 and May 2022 were reviewed. Patients with a diagnosis of FAIS who underwent hip arthroscopy with a minimum of 1-year follow-up were included. The exclusion criteria were prior ipsilateral hip or knee surgery, hip Tönnis grade greater than 1, knee Kellgren-Lawrence grade greater than 2, hip conditions (avascular necrosis, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, pigmented villonodular synovitis, osteoid osteoma, synovial chondromatosis, and developmental dysplasia of the hip), and spine diseases. All patients underwent knee magnetic resonance imaging preoperatively. Preoperative and short-term (1-year) patient-reported outcomes were collected, consisting of the Hip Sports Activity Scale score, weekly sports participation, modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS), 12-component International Hip Outcome Tool (iHOT-12) score, and visual analog pain scale (VAS) scores for the hip and the ipsilateral knee. The percentages of patients achieving the minimal clinically important difference and patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) for the mHHS and iHOT-12 score were calculated. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to determine the effect of IKP severity on postoperative outcomes. Subgroup analysis was performed between patients with IKP alleviation and those without IKP alleviation. RESULTS: Among the 107 patients included, 47 presented with preoperative IKP. Compared with patients without IKP, the IKP cohort had comparable knee structural abnormalities (all with P > .05). Still, the IKP cohort showed inferior preoperative values for the mHHS (P = .003), iHOT-12 score (P = .016), hip VAS score (P = .001), and weekly sports participation (P = .039). Postoperatively, the IKP cohort had a lower mHHS (P = .046), lower iHOT-12 score (P = .037), and lower hip VAS score (P = .003) and were less likely to achieve the PASS for the mHHS (P = .021) and iHOT-12 score (P = .049). Patients with higher knee VAS scores were less likely to achieve the PASS for the mHHS (odds ratio, 0.61; P = .023). Within the IKP group, the knee VAS score improved from 2.3 to 1.0 (P < .001). Patients with alleviated IKP showed superior postoperative iHOT-12 scores (P = .038) compared with patients with persistent IKP. CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant IKP at baseline negatively affected preoperative status and short-term clinical outcomes after arthroscopic treatment of FAIS. Patients with IKP were less likely to meet clinical thresholds. Most patients achieved IKP alleviation postoperatively, which was associated with superior clinical outcomes. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, retrospective cohort study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is an enveloped positive-sense ssRNA virus which is highly lethal to piglets, causing enormous economic losses to swine industry worldwide. Nsp15 protein is an endoribonuclease of PEDV and plays an indispensable role in the viral proliferation. We reported the transcription files of nsp15 transfected IPEC-J2 cells for the first time to broaden our understanding of PEDV pathogenesis. METHODS: RNA-seq was performed to compare gene expression profiles between pCAGGS-HA-nsp15 transfected IPEC-J2 cells and pCAGGS-HA (empty vector) transfected IPEC-J2 cells. Immune-related genes and pathways were identified and analyzed to deepen our understanding of nsp15 for PEDV pathogenicity. IPEC-J2 cells transfected with pCAGGS-HA-CCL5/CXCL8/CXCL10 were infected with CV777 and the virus load of PEDV was detected by qRT-PCR. RESULTS: A total of 21,654 genes were obtained by RNA-Seq and 415 differential expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, including 136 up-regulated and 279 down-regulated genes. A number of effect genes involved in immune responses and inflammation were differentially expressed. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis showed that 32 GO terms were significantly enriched and the DEGs were mainly enriched in immune-related pathways such as TNF signaling pathway, RIG-I-like receptor signaling pathway and Cytosolic DNA-sensing pathway. qRT-PCR results indicated the overexpression of selected chemokines, CCL5/CXCL8/CXCL10, can inhibit PEDV proliferation in IPEC-J2 cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our transcriptome profile illustrated a number of genes involving in immune responses and inflammation were inhibited by nsp15, such as CCL5, CXCL8, CXCL10, OAS, MXs, STAT1 and IRF9. The results suggested that nsp15 can antagonize IFNs and block chemokine system to provide an adequate intracellular environment for viral proliferation.

RESUMO

The two-dimensional heterostructures with type-II band alignment and super-high carrier mobility offer an updated perspective for photovoltaic devices. Here, based on the first-principles calculation, a novel vertical NGyne/GaSe heterostructure with an intrinsic type-II band alignment, super-high carrier mobility (104cm2V-1s-1), and strong visible to ultraviolet light absorption (104-105cm-1) is constructed. We investigate the electronic structure and the interfacial properties of the NGyne/GaSe heterostructure under electric field and strain. The band offsets and band gap of the NGyne/GaSe heterostructure can be regulated under applied vertical electric field and strain efficiently. Further study reveals that the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the NGyne/GaSe heterostructure is vastly improved under a negative electric field and reaches up to 25.09%. Meanwhile, near-free electron states are induced under a large applied electric field, leading to the NGyne/GaSe heterostructure transform from semiconductors to metal. Our results indicate that the NGyne/GaSe heterostructure will have extremely potential in optoelectronic devices, especially solar cells.

RESUMO

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a common inflammatory disease with high heterogeneity and postoperative recidivation. The IL-33/ST2 axis is known to be involved in Th2 immune responses. This study is aimed at exploring levels of serum IL-33 and soluble ST2 (sST2) in CRSwNP patients and their potential for predicting CRSwNP endotypes and postoperative recurrence. Methods: The present study recruited 149 CRSwNP patients, 80 of whom were noneosinophilic (neCRSwNP) and 69 eosinophilic (eCRSwNP), as well as 60 healthy controls (HCs). Serum samples were collected from all participants, and sST2 and IL-33 concentrations were measured using ELISA. Multivariate analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to evaluate the value of serum sST2 and IL-33 levels in distinguishing CRSwNP endotypes and predicting postoperative recurrence. Results: The levels of serum sST2 and IL-33 in CRSwNP patients were significantly higher than those in HCs, especially in the eCRSwNP group. Increased sST2 and IL-33 levels were associated with eosinophil counts and percentages in both tissue and blood. Multivariate regression and ROC curve analysis showed that serum sST2 and IL-33 exhibited potential for distinguishing CRSwNP endotypes, and the combination of serum IL-33 and sST2 showed even more predictive power. Finally, 124 CRSwNP patients completed the entire 3-year follow-up. Multivariate analysis and Kaplan-Meier curves showed that serum sST2 and IL-33 levels were associated with recurrence; serum sST2 and IL-33 each exhibited potential for predicting postoperative recurrence, and combining serum sST2 and IL-33 exhibited better accuracy and practicability. Conclusion: Our results suggested that serum sST2 and IL-33 levels were upregulated in CRSwNP patients and related to the degree of mucosal eosinophil infiltration and postoperative recurrence. Serum sST2 and IL-33 might serve as objective biomarkers for distinguishing phenotypes and predicting recurrence in CRSwNP, and their combined use outperformed either marker alone.

RESUMO

Hypoxia is a major stressor and a prominent feature of pathological conditions, such as bacterial infections, inflammation, wounds, and cardiovascular defects. In this study, we investigated whether reoxygenation has a protective effect against hypoxia-induced acute injury and burn using the C57BL/6 mouse model. C57BL/6 mice were exposed to hypoxia and treated with both acute and burn injuries and were in hypoxia until wound healing. Next, C57BL/6 mice were exposed to hypoxia for three days and then transferred to normoxic conditions for reoxygenation until wound healing. Finally, skin wound tissue was collected to analyze healing-related markers, such as inflammation, vascularization, and collagen. Hypoxia significantly increased inflammatory cell infiltration and decreased vascular and collagen production, and reoxygenation notably attenuated hypoxia-induced infiltration of inflammatory cells, upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine levels (IL-6 and TNF-α) in the wound, and remission of inflammation in the wound. Immunofluorescence analysis showed that reoxygenation increased the expression of the angiogenic factor α-SMA and decreased ROS expression in burn tissues compared to hypoxia-treated animals. Moreover, further analysis by qPCR showed that reoxygenation could alleviate the expression of hypoxic-induced inflammatory markers (IL-6 and TNF), increase angiogenesis (SMA) and collagen synthesis (Col I), and thus promote wound healing. It is suggested that oxygen can be further evaluated in combination with oxygen-releasing materials as a supplementary therapy for patients with chronic hypoxic wounds.

RESUMO

Critical discourse analysis aims to explore the dialectical relationship between discourse and ideology. Based on psycholinguistic research, this paper analyzes the Chinese and American media's news reports and comments on the COVID-19. It aims to expose the hidden psychological messages and ideologies behind the words. The corpus in this paper is mainly from the official media of China Daily and Time from December 2019 to January 2021 in China and the United States. This paper uses Wang Zhenhua's Appraisal Theory and Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar as tools to make a comparative analysis of the corpus. At the textual level, languages are classified and lexical choices are analyzed followed by the analysis of the reporter's ideology after reviewing the motivation of the reporters of two countries. On the level of social responsibility expression and discourse, the paper analyzes the news reports, which are characterized by the combination of the reporter's views on the news. In the aspect of social practice, the social and cultural factors and background of news reports are analyzed. China calls for strengthening cooperation and exchanges with other countries to jointly fight the epidemic. The Chinese government has actively shared its experience and made corresponding contributions to international economic recovery. However, the US government shirks its responsibility by claiming that the effective implementation of Chinese methods and experience in China does not mean that it can achieve corresponding results in Europe and the US. At the same time, the United States provides medical supplies to other countries. This study hopes to help awaken readers' critical thinking and increase their awareness of the anti-control of mass discourse. At the same time, it is hoped that readers can view the epidemic from a more scientific perspective, understand the facts and reject the unwarranted panic. It will also help reshape Chinese and American discourse.

RESUMO

The primary challenge for widespread applications of two-dimensional electronics is to achieve satisfactory electrical contacts due to the difficulties in inevitable physical damages and selectively doping during traditional metal integration process. The two-dimensional (2D) metal-semiconductor junctions have attracted captivated attention for potential applications in future atomically thin electronics as perfect candidates for achieving reliable electrical contacts. Here we demonstrate the van der Waals epitaxial growth of 2D NiTe2-MoS2 metal-semiconductor vertical junctions which the upper NiTe2 selectively nucleate at the edge of underlying MoS2. Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) studies confirm that NiTe2-MoS2 metal-semiconductor vertical junctions are successfully synthesized. Electrical properties of the NiTe2-contacted MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs) show higher field-effect mobilities (µFE) than those with deposited Cr/Au contacts. This study demonstrates an effective pathway to improved MoS2 transistors performance with metal-semiconductor junctions.

Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) studies confirmed that NiTe2-MoS2 metal-semiconductor vertical junctions had been successfully synthesized. The electrical properties of the NiTe2-contacted MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs) showed higher field-effect mobilities (µ FE) than those with deposited Cr/Au contacts. This study demonstrates an effective pathway to improved MoS2 transistor performance with metal-semiconductor junctions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Learning medical English is particularly challenging for non-native English-speaking medical students. The Smart Class teaching module is a new online teaching module for rehabilitation-related medical English, the efficacy of which has yet to be established in the literature. Gender differences should also not be ignored in our study, taking into account the proven performance differences between males and females in language learning. MATERIAL AND METHODS First-year physiotherapy students in Grade 2018 and Grade 2019 at Guangzhou Medical University were recruited to participate in this study. Grade 2019, as the experimental group, completed the Smart Class teaching module, while Grade 2018, as the control group, completed the Traditional Class teaching module. The efficacy of both modules was assessed objectively using the students' medical English exam scores and subjectively using the students' responses to a questionnaire. RESULTS In total, 242 questionnaires were distributed, and 210 valid questionnaires were returned, of which 119 were from the Smart Class teaching module group and 91 were from the Traditional Class teaching module group. There was no statistically significant difference between the medical English exam scores of the 2 groups (P=0.324). However, the subjective assessment revealed that the students experienced a significantly greater burden from the workload in the Smart Class teaching module group (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS We found both the Smart Class teaching module and the Traditional Class teaching module achieved similar teaching outcomes. Therefore, the former represents a viable alternative teaching option for situations where traditional class teaching is not possible.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Online blended learning, also known as "smart classes", has benefits when compared with traditional teaching methods that use books and lectures. This study aimed to compare the use of the Smart Class teaching module with traditional teaching on the topic of psychosocial dysfunction during the training of undergraduate occupational therapy (OT) students in China. MATERIAL AND METHODS We recruited Grade 2017 OT students as the Smart Class teaching module group and Grade 2016 OT students as the Traditional Class teaching module group to participate in the study. The objective evaluation (assignment score, practical exam score, written exam score, and final score) and subjective evaluation (data from student questionnaires and information from interviews with the lead teacher and assistant teachers) were performed in both groups. RESULTS No significant difference was found in the final scores (P=0.874) and students' questionnaire results between the 2 groups. However, data from the student questionnaires and teacher interviews indicated a preference for combining the Smart Class teaching module and the Traditional Class teaching module. CONCLUSIONS The advantage of the Smart Class teaching module is that it can effectively integrate excellent teaching resources across geographical restrictions and it is conducive to promoting independent learning for students and all-around supervision for teaching. The Smart Class teaching module was comparable to traditional teaching methods for the training of undergraduate OT students in China, but was preferred by the students.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Suppressor of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) is a key biomarker in inflammation and cardiovascular diseases, but limited data is available on its role in allergic rhinitis (AR). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to explore the role of serum soluble ST2 (sST2) in evaluating disease severity and predicting the efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) in house dust mite- (HDM-) induced AR patients. METHODS: Eighty healthy controls (HC group) and 160 HDM-induced AR patients, including 40 mild patients (MAR group) and 120 moderate-severe patients (MSAR group), were recruited in this study. Serum was collected from all participants and levels of sST2 were determined by ELISA and the relationship between sST2 levels and disease severity was assessed. In the MSAR group, 109 patients received 3 years of SLIT, and the relationship between serum levels of sST2 and efficacy of SLIT was exampled. RESULTS: Serum sST2 levels were increased in HDM-induced AR patients compared to the HC group (P < 0.001), and the concentrations were higher in the MSAR group than in the MAR group and HC group (all P < 0.05). Moreover, sST2 levels positively correlated with the total nasal symptom score (TNSS), visual analogue scale (VAS), and specific IgE levels (P < 0.05). Seventy-eight MSAR patients accomplished SLIT, and they were divided into an effective group (n = 40) and an ineffective group (n = 38). The serum sST2 levels in the effective group were lower than those in the ineffective group (P < 0.001). In addition, patients in the effective group levels exhibited significantly lower sST2 levels post-SLIT than pre-SLIT (P < 0.001), but no statistic difference was observed in the ineffective group (P > 0.05). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed promising accuracy for predicting clinical efficacy of SLIT in AR patients (area under the curve = 0.839, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Serum sST2 is a potential biomarker for assessing disease severity and may serve as a sensitive biomarker for predicting the therapeutic response of SLIT in HDM-induced AR patients.
