RESUMO

China is home to the second largest population of children and adolescents in the world. Yet demographic shifts mean that the government must manage the challenge of fewer children with the needs of an ageing population, while considering the delicate tension between economic growth and environmental sustainability. We mapped the health problems and risks of contemporary school-aged children and adolescents in China against current national health policies. We involved multidisciplinary experts, including young people, with the aim of identifying actionable strategies and specific recommendations to promote child and adolescent health and wellbeing. Notwithstanding major improvements in their health over the past few decades, contemporary Chinese children and adolescents face distinct social challenges, including high academic pressures and youth unemployment, and new health concerns including obesity, mental health issues, and sexually transmitted infections. Inequality by gender, geography, and ethnicity remains a feature of health risks and outcomes. We identified a mismatch between current health determinants, risks and outcomes, and government policies. To promote the health of children and adolescents in China, we recommend a set of strategies that target government-led initiatives across the health, education, and community sectors, which aim to build supportive and responsive families, safe communities, and engaging and respectful learning environments. Long-term visualization of the dynamic interactions between intracellular structures throughout the three-dimensional space of whole live cells is essential to better understand their functions, but this task remains challenging due to the limitations of existing three-dimensional fluorescence microscopy techniques, such as an insufficient axial resolution, low volumetric imaging rate and photobleaching. Here, we present the combination of a progressive deep-learning super-resolution strategy with a double-ring-modulated selective plane illumination microscopy design capable of visualizing the dynamics of intracellular structures in live cells for hours at an isotropic spatial resolution of roughly 100 nm in three dimensions at speeds up to roughly 17 Hz. Using this approach, we reveal the complex spatial relationships and interactions between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria throughout live cells, providing new insights into ER-mediated mitochondrial division. We also examined the motion of Drp1 oligomers involved in mitochondrial fission and revealed the dynamic interactions between Drp1 and mitochondria in three dimensions.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) show high efficiency in a small fraction of advanced gastric cancer (GC). However, personalized immune subtypes have not been developed for the prediction of ICI efficiency in GC. Herein, we identified Pan-Immune Activation Module (PIAM), a curated gene expression profile (GEP) representing the co-infiltration of multiple immune cell types in tumor microenvironment of GC, which was associated with high expression of immunosuppressive molecules such as PD-1 and CTLA-4. We also identified Pan-Immune Dysfunction Genes (PIDG), a conservative PIAM-derivated GEP indicating the dysfunction of immune cell cooperation, which was associated with upregulation of metastatic programs (extracellular matrix receptor interaction, TGF-ß signaling, epithelial-mesenchymal transition and calcium signaling) but downregulation of proliferative signalings (MYC targets, E2F targets, mTORC1 signaling, and DNA replication and repair). Moreover, we developed 'GSClassifier', an ensemble toolkit based on top scoring pairs and extreme gradient boosting, for population-based modeling and personalized identification of GEP subtypes. With PIAM and PIDG, we developed four Pan-immune Activation and Dysfunction (PAD) subtypes and a GSClassifier model 'PAD for individual' with high accuracy in predicting response to pembrolizumab (anti-PD-1) in advance GC (AUC = 0.833). Intriguingly, PAD-II (PIAMhighPIDGlow) displayed the highest objective response rate (60.0%) compared with other subtypes (PAD-I, PIAMhighPIDGhigh, 0%; PAD-III, PIAMlowPIDGhigh, 0%; PAD-IV, PIAMlowPIDGlow, 17.6%; P = 0.003), which was further validated in the metastatic urothelial cancer cohort treated with atezolizumab (anti-PD-L1) (P = 0.018). In all, we provided 'GSClassifier' as a refined computational framework for GEP-based stratification and PAD subtypes as a promising strategy for exploring ICI responders in GC. Metastatic pathways could be potential targets for GC patients with high immune infiltration but resistance to ICI therapy.

INTRODUCTION: The bidirectional relationship between the brain cortex and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remains inadequately explored. METHODS: This study used bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the interactions between nine phenotypes associated with hypertension, heart failure, atrial fibrillation (AF), and coronary heart disease (CHD), and brain cortex measurements. These measurements included total surface area (SA), average thickness (TH), and the SA and TH of 34 regions defined by the Desikan-Killiany atlas. The nine traits were obtained from sources such as the UK Biobank and FinnGen, etc., while MRI-derived traits of cortical structure were sourced from the ENIGMA Consortium. The primary estimate was obtained using the inverse-variance weighted approach. A false discovery rate adjustment was applied to the p-values (resulting in q-values) in the analyses of regional cortical structures. RESULTS: A total of 1,260 two-sample MR analyses were conducted. Existing CHD demonstrated an influence on the SA of the banks of the superior temporal sulcus (bankssts) (q=0.018) and the superior frontal lobe (q=0.018), while hypertension was associated with changes in the TH of the lateral occipital region (q=0.02). Regarding the effects of the brain cortex on CVD incidence, total SA was significantly associated with the risk of CHD. Additionally, 16 and 3 regions exhibited significant effects on blood pressure and AF risk, respectively (q<0.05). These regions were primarily located in the frontal, temporal, and cingulate areas, which are associated with cognitive function and mood regulation. CONCLUSION: The detection of cortical changes through MRI could aid in screening for potential neuropsychiatric disorders in individuals with established CVD. Moreover, abnormalities in cortical structure may predict future CVD risk, offering new insights for prevention and treatment strategies.

2D semiconductor heterostructures exhibit broad application prospects. However, regular nanochannels of heterostructures rarely caught the researcher's attention. Herein, a metal-organic framework (i.e., Cu3(HHTP)2) and transition metal dichalcogenides (i.e., MoS2)-based multilayer van der Waals heterostructure (i.e., Cu3(HHTP)2/MoS2) realized band alignment-dominated light-driven ion transport and further light-enhanced ionic energy generation. High-density channels of the heterostructure provide high-speed pathways for ion transmembrane transport. Upon light illumination, a net ionic flow occurs at a symmetric concentration, suggesting a directional cationic transport from Cu3(HHTP)2 to MoS2. This is because Cu3(HHTP)2/MoS2 heterostructures containing type-II band alignment can generate photovoltaic motive force through light-induced efficient charge separation to drive ion transport. After introducing into the ionic power generation system, the maximum power density under illumination can achieve notable improvement under different concentration differences. In addition to the photovoltaic motive force, type-II band alignment and material defect capture-induced surface charge increase also raise ion selectivity and flux, greatly facilitating ionic energy generation. This work demonstrates that 2D semiconductor heterostructures with rational band alignment can not only be a potential platform for optimizing light-enhanced ionic energy harvesting but also provide a new thought for biomimetic iontronic devices.

Reading with a bit of yellowish or greenish paper, as compared to white paper, is thought to be more comfortable and friendly, and can help decrease eye fatigue to some degree. In this work, we try to map the light of different colors on a given paper within a region of interest to alter the colors presented by the paper and consequently influence the reading experience. We conducted an ergonomic experiment to study the comfort and clarity under consistent illuminance levels. We adopted 6 color series(red, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and magenta), 5 chroma levels(0, 10, 20, 30, 40), and 4 types of paper with the same hue(yellow) but different lightness(the white, light yellow, yellow, and dark yellow), and conducted pairwise selection experiments within each light color series. Results show that white and low chroma (≈10) color characteristics contribute to comfort, while higher chroma blue(30∼40) color benefits clarity. Referring to white, low chroma greenish and yellowish color characteristics are preferred in terms of comfort and clarity. This work proposes the spectrum mapping technology to endow the paper with new color effects and verifies that although spectrum compositions might differ, people's preferences and comfort perception are consistent with the same object color.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore imaging features including tissue characterization and myocardial deformation in diabetic heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) patients by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and investigate its prognostic value for adverse outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with HFpEF who underwent cardiac MRI between January 2010 and December 2016 were enrolled. Feature-tracking (FT) analysis and myocardial fibrosis were assessed by cardiac MRI. Cox proportional regression analysis was performed to determine the association between MRI variables and primary outcomes. Primary outcomes were all-cause death or heart failure hospitalization during the follow-up period. RESULTS: Of the 335 enrolled patients with HFpEF, 191 had diabetes mellitus (DM) (mean age: 58.7 years ± 10.8; 137 men). During a median follow-up of 10.2 years, 91 diabetic HFpEF and 56 non-diabetic HFpEF patients experienced primary outcomes. DM was a significant predictor of worse prognosis in HFpEF. In diabetic HFpEF, the addition of conventional imaging variables (left ventricular ejection fraction, left atrial volume index, extent of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE)) and global longitudinal strain (GLS) resulted in a significant increase in the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (from 0.693 to 0.760, p < 0.05). After adjustment for multiple clinical and imaging variables, each 1% worsening in GLS was associated with a 9.8% increased risk of adverse events (p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Diabetic HFpEF is characterized by more severely impaired strains and myocardial fibrosis, which is identified as a high-risk HFpEF phenotype. In diabetic HFpEF, comprehensive cardiac MRI provides incremental value in predicting prognosis. Particularly, MRI-FT measurement of GLS is an independent predictor of adverse outcome in diabetic HFpEF. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Our findings suggested that MRI-derived variables, especially global longitudinal strain, played a crucial role in risk stratification and predicting worse prognosis in diabetic heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, which could assist in identifying high-risk patients and guiding therapeutic decision-making. KEY POINTS: • Limited data are available on the cardiac MRI features of diabetic heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, including myocardial deformation and tissue characterization, as well as their incremental prognostic value. • Diabetic heart failure with preserved ejection fraction patients was characterized by more impaired strains and myocardial fibrosis. Comprehensive MRI, including tissue characterization and global longitudinal strain, provided incremental value for risk prediction. • MRI served as a valuable tool for identifying high-risk patients and guiding clinical management in diabetic heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

In recent years, perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have successfully attracted widespread attention due to their excellent optical properties. However, the instability and toxicity problems of perovskite quantum dots are the main obstacles limiting their applications. In this work, bismuth-based perovskite quantum dots were synthesized by a ligand-assisted reprecipitation method, based on which a novel boric acid-functionalized bismuth-based non-toxic perovskite quantum dots fluorescent sensor (Cs3Bi2Br9-APBA) that can be stabilized in the ethanol phase was prepared by a boron affinity technique. Based on the covalent binding interaction of Cs3Bi2Br9-APBA with oxytetracycline (OTC), a highly selective and sensitive method for the detection of OTC was developed, which effectively solved the problems of poor stability and toxicity in the application of perovskite quantum dots. Under the optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity of the synthesized Cs3Bi2Br9-APBA was linear with the concentration range of 0.1 ∼ 18 µM OTC, and the detection limit could reach 0.0802 µM. The fluorescence detection mechanism was explored and analyzed by spectral overlap analysis, suppression efficiency study of observed and corrected fluorescence, and fluorescence lifetime decay curve fitting, the mechanism of OTC detection by Cs3Bi2Br9-APBA was identified as the inner filter effect (IFE). In addition, the sensor successfully realized the quantitative detection of trace OTC in the environment, and our study provides a new idea for the preparation of green perovskite materials with high stability and selectivity.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The novel sex-specific anthropometric equation relative fat mass (RFM) is a new estimator of whole-body fat %. The study aimed to investigate the predictive role of RFM in cardiometabolic abnormalities, cardiovascular disease (CVD), all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, and explored potential sex differences. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study analyzed data from 26,754 adults in NHANES 1999-2010, with a median follow-up of 13.8 years. The correlation between RFM and body composition as well as fat distribution assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was investigated. Weighted multivariable generalized linear models, Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spline were applied to investigate the predictive role of RFM in metabolic markers, cardiovascular risk factors, CVD, all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. RFM exhibited a robust correlation with both whole-body fat % and trunk fat %. Higher RFM exhibited a stronger association with impaired glucose homeostasis, serum lipids, the incidence of hypertension, and coronary heart disease in males, while a stronger association with C-reactive protein in females. A U-shaped association between RFM and all-cause mortality was observed only in males. The hazard ratio (HR) of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in males increased rapidly when RFM exceeded 30. However, in females, the HR of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality fluctuated until RFM exceeded 45, after which it increased rapidly. CONCLUSION: RFM was a sex-specific estimator for both general and central obesity, sex-specific differences in predicting cardiometabolic abnormalities and adverse events using RFM might be partially attributed to differences in body composition and fat distribution between sexes.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence links the echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4 (EML4)-anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement to venous thromboembolism (VTE) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. However, the corresponding mechanisms remain unclear. METHOD: High-throughput sequencing analysis of H3122 human ALK-positive NSCLC cells treated with ALK inhibitor/ dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was performed to identify coagulation-associated differential genes between EML4-ALK fusion protein inhibited cells and control cells. Sequentially, we confirmed its expression in NSCLC patients' tissues and in the plasma of a subcutaneous xenograft mouse model. An inferior vena cava (IVC) ligation model was used to assess clot formation potential. Additionally, pathways involved in tissue factor (TF) regulation were explored in ALK-positive cell lines H3122 and H2228. Statistical significance was determined by Student t-test and one-way ANOVA using SPSS. RESULTS: Sequencing analysis identified a significant downregulation of TF after inhibiting EML4-ALK fusion protein activity in H3122 cells. In clinical NSCLC cases, TF expression was increased especially in ALK-positive NSCLC tissues. Meanwhile, H3122 and H2228 with high TF expression exhibited shorter plasma clotting time and higher TF activity versus ALK-negative H1299 and A549 in cell culture supernatant. Mice bearing H2228 tumor showed a higher concentration of tumor-derived TF and TF activity in plasma and the highest adjusted IVC clot weights. Limiting EML4-ALK protein phosphorylation downregulated extracellular regulated protein kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2)-activating the protein-1(AP-1) signaling pathway and thus attenuated TF expression. CONCLUSION: EML4-ALK fusion protein may enhance venous thrombogenicity by regulating coagulation factor TF expression. There was potential involvement of the pERK1/2-AP-1 pathway in this process.

BACKGROUND: The association between plasma free fatty acid (FFA) and the outcomes in the heart failure (HF) patients remains unclear. METHODS: A cohort study among HF patients was performed. Plasma FFA was analyzed as both a continuous and a categorical variable (grouped by tertiles) to assess its association with composite cardiovascular (CV) death and HF hospitalization (CV death & HHP), CV death alone, and all-cause mortality (ACM) using Cox regression models. Subgroup analyses of HF patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and mildly reduced/reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF/HFrEF) were performed. This work also assessed the effectiveness of combining FFA and NT-pro BNP biomarkers for risk stratification by calculating the concordance index (C-index). RESULTS: Among the 4,109 HF patients, FFA levels exceeding 0.4-0.42 mmol/L were associated with increased risks of the three outcomes. Patients in the highest FFA tertile faced greater risks than those in the lowest tertile. Adjusted hazard ratios were 1.32 (95% CI: 1.11-1.58) for CV death & HHP, 1.45 (95% CI: 1.16-1.82) for CV death, and 1.39 (95% CI: 1.15-1.68) for ACM, with a maximum follow-up of 8 years (median: 25 months). Subgroup analyses revealed that elevated FFA levels consistently predicted worse outcomes in both HFmrEF/HFrEF and HFpEF patients. The C-index for predicting outcomes was significantly greater when NT-pro BNP and FFA were combined than when NT-pro BNP was used alone (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Increased plasma FFA concentrations were independently associated with greater risks of CV death & HHP, CV death, and ACM among HF patients, irrespective of the ejection fraction. The combination of FFA and NT-pro BNP biomarkers significantly improved risk stratification in HF patients.

BACKGROUND: Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are common among older adults with cancer, but their association with overall survival (OS) among non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between the use of PIMs and OS in patients with NSCLC. METHODS: In this cohort study, we included patients ≥ 65 years with newly diagnosed NSCLC from January 2014 to December 2020. Potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) is defined by the Beers criteria of 2019 at baseline and within six months following the initiation of systemic therapy. Multivariable Cox regression model was built to assess the association between PIMs and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: We finally included 338 patients with a median follow-up for OS of 1777 days. The prevalence of patients receiving at least one PIM was 39.9% (135/338) and 61.2% (71/116) at baseline and after systemic therapy, respectively. The most important factor associated with PIM use was the number of prescribed medications (P < 0.001). Baseline PIM use and PIM after systemic therapy were significantly associated with inferior OS (476 days vs. 844 days, P = 0.044; and 633 days vs. 1600 days, P = 0.007; respectively). In multivariable analysis, both baseline PIM use and PIM after systemic therapy were independent predictors of poor prognosis (adjusted HR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.01-1.75; P = 0.041; and adjusted HR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.11-3.14; P = 0.020; respectively). CONCLUSIONS: PIMs are prevalent among older patients with NSCLC and are independent predictors of NSCLC prognosis. There is an urgent need for clinicians to conduct medication reconciliation and appropriate deprescribing for this population, especially for patients with multiple PIMs.

BACKGROUND: Marital status is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and overall mortality, yet limited research on this topic in elderly individuals is available. Our aim was to comprehensively assess the impact of marital status and other family factors on CVD incidence and long-term mortality among elderly people. METHODS: Data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2002/2005/2008-2018) for participants aged ≥60 years were analysed. A cross-sectional study initially examined the correlation between spouses, offspring, living arrangements, and CVD using logistic regression. Subsequently, a retrospective cohort study investigated the long-term associations of these factors with overall mortality via Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. RESULTS: The study involved 48 510 subjects (average age: 87 years). The cross-sectional analysis revealed a correlation between living with a spouse and an increased incidence of heart disease (adjusted OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.04-1.55) and cerebrovascular disease/stroke (adjusted OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.11-1.42). According to the retrospective cohort analysis, living with a spouse significantly reduced overall mortality (adjusted HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.80-0.87), irrespective of marital relationship quality. Conversely, living with offspring (adjusted HR 1.12, 95% CI 1.08-1.16), having more children (adjusted Pnonlinearity = 0.427) or cohabitants (adjusted Pnonlinearity < 0.0001) were associated with increased overall mortality. CONCLUSION: In the elderly population, being married and living with a spouse were not significantly associated with a decrease in CVD incidence but were associated with a reduction in long-term overall mortality. Living with offspring, having more children, or having a larger family size did not replicate the protective effect but indicated greater overall mortality.

There are numerous applications of terahertz (THz) imaging in many fields. However, current THz imaging is generally based on scanning technique due to the limited intensity of the THz sources. Thus, it takes a long time to obtain a frame image of the target and cannot meet the requirement of fast THz imaging. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot direct THz imaging strategy based on a broadband intense THz source with a frequency range of 0.1~23 THz and a THz camera with a frequency response range of 1~7 THz. This THz source was generated from the laser-plasma interaction, with its central frequency at ~12 THz. The frame rate of this imaging system was 8.5 frames per second. The imaging resolution reached 146.2 µm. With this imaging system, a single-shot THz image for a target object with a size of more than 7 cm was routinely obtained, showing a potential application for fast THz imaging. Furthermore, we proposed and tested an image enhancement algorithm based on an improved dark channel prior (DCP) theory and multi-scale retinex (MSR) theory to optimize the image brightness, contrast, entropy and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

Recent investigations reveal elemental semimetal (Bi and Sb) contacts fabricated with conventional deposition processes exhibit a remarkable capacity of approaching the quantum limit in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor contacts, implying it might be an optimal option to solve the contact issue of 2D semiconductor electronics. Here, we demonstrate novel compound Dirac semimetal ZrTe2 contacts to MoS2 constructed by a nondestructive van der Waals (vdW) transfer process, exhibiting excellent ohmic contact characteristics with a negligible Schottky barrier. The band hybridization between ZrTe2 and MoS2 was verified. The bilayer MoS2 transistor with a 250 nm channel length on a 20 nm thick hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) exhibits an ION/IOFF current ratio over 105 and an on-state current of 259 µA µm-1. The current results reveal that 2D compound semimetals with vdW contacts can offer a diverse selection of proper semimetals with adjustable work functions for the next-generation 2D-based beyond-silicon electronics.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have identified abnormal expression of lncRNA SNHG12 in ischemic stroke, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through database predictions, m6A methylation sites were found on SNHG12, suggesting post-transcriptional modification. To further elucidate the role of SNHG12 and m6A methyltransferase WTAP in oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R)-induced damage in cerebral microvascular endothelial cells, we conducted investigations. Additionally, we examined the impact of m6A methyltransferase WTAP on SNHG12 expression. RESULTS: Overexpressing SNHG12 in bEnd.3 cells was found to inhibit cell proliferation and promote apoptosis, as well as activate the production of reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokines (E-selectin, IL-6 and MCP-1), along with angiogenic proteins (VEGFA and FGFb). Conversely, SNHG12 knockdown alleviated OGD/R-induced damage to BEnd.3 cells, resulting in improved cell proliferation, reduced apoptosis, decreased ROS and LDH production, as well as diminished expression of inflammatory cytokines (E-selectin, IL-6 and MCP-1) and angiogenic proteins (VEGFA and FGFb). Furthermore, WTAP was found to positively regulate SNHG12 expression, and WTAP knockdown in bEnd.3 cells under the OGD/R conditions inhibited cell proliferation, promoted apoptosis, and increased ROS and LDH production. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that WTAP may play a crucial role in SNHG12-mediated OGD/R-induced damage in bEnd.3 cells. More molecular experiments are needed to further analyze its mechanism. Overall, our study helps to enrich our understanding of the dysregulation of SNHG12 in ischemic stroke.

In challenging reservoirs where thermal recovery falls short, cold or chemical oil recovery methods are crucial. Spontaneous emulsification (SE), triggered by gentle disturbance, significantly enhances oil recovery. In elucidating SE mechanisms and kinetics, SE processes via direct contact between oil and aqueous phases without stirring were conducted. The effects of temperature, emulsifier concentration, pH, NaCl concentration, and the oil-to-water ratio on SE were investigated through droplet size analysis and turbidity measurements. Furthermore, the emulsification mechanism and derived emulsification kinetics based on turbidity data were obtained. The results underscore the feasibility of SE for oil-water systems, reducing viscous and capillary resistances without agitation. The emulsified oil mass increased with the temperature, pH, and aqueous-to-oil phase volume ratio while decreasing with the NaCl concentration. In this study, for GD-2 crude oil, the optimal emulsified oil amount occurred at a betaine surfactant (BetS-2) emulsifier concentration of 0.45%. Microscopic photo analysis indicated narrow particle size distributions and small droplets, which remained stable over time under various experimental conditions. A combined SE mechanism involving ultralow interfacial tension, interfacial turbulence due to Marangoni effects, and "diffusion and stranding" due to in situ emulsifier hydrophilicity, was speculated. Additionally, an analogous second-order kinetic equation for SE was proposed, indicating exceptional correlation with calculated and experimentally measured values. This study offers theoretical insight for enhancing oil recovery in chemical and cold production of heavy oil in oilfields.

Surfactants are hailed as "industrial monosodium glutamate", and are widely used as emulsifiers, demulsifiers, water treatment agents, etc., in the petroleum industry. However, due to the unidirectivity of conventional surfactants, the difficulty in demulsifying petroleum emulsions generated after emulsification with such surfactants increases sharply. Therefore, it is of great significance and application value to design and develop a novel switchable surfactant for oil exploitation. In this study, a CO2-switchable Gemini surfactant of N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-didodecyl butylene diamine (DMDBA) was synthesized from 1, 4-dibromobutane, dodecylamine, formic acid, and formaldehyde. Then, the synthesized surfactant was structurally characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS); the changes in conductivity and Zeta potential of DMDBA before and after CO2/N2 injection were also studied. The results show that DMDBA had a good CO2 response and cycle reversibility. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of cationic surfactant obtained from DMDBA by injecting CO2 was 1.45 × 10-4 mol/L, the surface tension at CMC was 33.4 mN·m-1, and the contact angle with paraffin was less than 90°, indicating that it had a good surface activity and wettability. In addition, the kinetic law of the process of producing surfactant by injecting CO2 was studied, and it was found that the process was a second-order reaction. The influence of temperature and gas velocity on the reaction dynamics was explored. The calculated values from the equation were in good agreement with the measured values, with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.9950. The activation energy measured during the formation of surfactant was Ea = 91.16 kJ/mol.

Numerous reported bioinspired osmotic energy conversion systems employing cation-/anion-selective membranes and solutions with different salinity are actually far from the biological counterpart. The iso-osmotic power generator with the specific ionic permselective channels (e.g., K+ or Na+ channels) which just allow specific ions to get across and iso-osmotic solutions still remain challenges. Inspired by nature, we report a bioinspired K+ -channel by employing a K+ selective ligand, 1,1,1-tris{[(2'-benzylaminoformyl)phenoxy]methyl}ethane (BMP) and graphene oxide membrane. Specifically, the K+ and Na+ selectivity of the prepared system could reach up to ≈17.8, and the molecular dynamics simulation revealed that the excellent permselectivity of K+ mainly stemmed from the formed suitable channel size. Thus, we assembled the K+ -selective iso-osmotic power generator (KSIPG) with the power density up to ≈15.1 mW/m2 between equal concentration solutions, which is higher than traditional charge-selective osmotic power generator (CSOPG). The proposed strategy has well shown the realizable approach to construct single-ion selective channels-based highly efficient iso-osmotic energy conversion systems and would surely inspire new applications in other fields, including self-powered systems and medical materials, etc.

OBJECTIVES: To study the risk factors for embolism in children with refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP) and to construct a nomogram model for prediction of embolism. METHODS: This retrospective study included 175 children diagnosed with RMPP at Children's Hospital Affiliated toZhengzhou University from January 2019 to October 2023. They were divided into two groups based on the presence of embolism: the embolism group (n=62) and the non-embolism group (n=113). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to screen for risk factors of embolism in children with RMPP, and the R software was applied to construct the nomogram model for prediction of embolism. RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that higher levels of D-dimer, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lung necrosis, and pleural effusion were risk factors for embolism in children with RMPP (P<0.05). The area under the curve of the nomogram model for prediction of embolism constructed based on the aforementioned risk factors was 0.912 (95%CI: 0.871-0.952, P<0.05). The Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test showed that the model had a good fit with the actual situation (P<0.05). Calibration and decision curve analysis indicated that the model had high predictive efficacy and clinical applicability. CONCLUSIONS: Higher levels of D-dimer, IL-6 and NLR, lung necrosis, and pleural effusion are risk factors for embolism in children with RMPP. The nomogram model based on these risk factors has high clinical value for predicting embolism in children with RMPP.
