RESUMO

Obstructive nephropathy is one of the leading causes of kidney injury and renal fibrosis in pediatric patients. Although considerable advances have been made in understanding the pathophysiology of obstructive nephropathy, most of them were based on animal experiments and a comprehensive understanding of obstructive nephropathy in pediatric patients at the molecular level remains limited. Here, we performed a comparative proteomics analysis of obstructed kidneys from pediatric patients with ureteropelvic junction obstruction and healthy kidney tissues. Intriguingly, the proteomics revealed extensive metabolic reprogramming in kidneys from individuals with ureteropelvic junction obstruction. Moreover, we uncovered the dysregulation of NAD+ metabolism and NAD+-related metabolic pathways, including mitochondrial dysfunction, the Krebs cycle, and tryptophan metabolism, which led to decreased NAD+ levels in obstructed kidneys. Importantly, the major NADase CD38 was strongly induced in human and experimental obstructive nephropathy. Genetic deletion or pharmacological inhibition of CD38 as well as NAD+ supplementation significantly recovered NAD+ levels in obstructed kidneys and reduced obstruction-induced renal fibrosis, partially through the mechanisms of blunting the recruitment of immune cells and NF-κB signaling. Thus, our work not only provides an enriched resource for future investigations of obstructive nephropathy but also establishes CD38-mediated NAD+ decline as a potential therapeutic target for obstruction-induced renal fibrosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Comorbidity of substance use disorders and depression is a common phenomenon. It is well known that opioid addiction is neurobiologically distinct from psychostimulant addiction. However, direct comparisons of comorbid depressive symptoms in patients with methamphetamine (METH) use disorder (MAUD) and heroin use disorders (HUD) have been lacking until now. METHODS: A total of 353 patients with methamphetamine use disorder, 76 patients with HUD, and 203 healthy controls were recruited. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-SF), the Desires for Drug Questionnaire (DDQ) and the short form of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF) were used to measure participants' depressive symptoms, drug craving, and childhood abuse or neglect, respectively. RESULTS: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 35.41% (125/353) in MAUD and 56.57% (43/76) in MAUD, significantly higher than the 22.66% (46/203) in healthy controls. Furthermore, there was a significant difference in the total BDI score between the MAUD and HUD groups (F = 5.02, df = 1, 372, p = .026). Among MAUD, years of education, history of incarceration, month of abstinence and negative reinforcement scores were associated with depressive symptoms (all p < .05). Among HUD, duration of drug use, childhood emotional abuse and sexual abuse were associated with depressive symptoms (all p < .05). CONCLUSIONS AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: The prevalence and correlates of depressive symptoms differ between MAUD and HUD, adding to the existing literature. Therefore, treatment and intervention programs should be designed to address these unique correlates in HUD and MAUD patients.

BACKGROUND: Craving is a core feature of addiction. Rumination and depression play a crucial role in the process of methamphetamine addiction. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between rumination, depression and craving in methamphetamine patients, which has not been explored yet. METHODS: A total of 778 patients with methamphetamine user disorder (MUD) at the Xinhua Drug Rehabilitation Center, located in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, China. We used a set of self-administered questionnaires that included socio-demographic, detailed drug use history, rumination, depression and craving information. The Rumination Response Scale (RRS) was used to measure rumination, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to measure depression and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to measure craving. RESULTS: There was a significant positive correlation between rumination and craving, or depression, and between depression and craving. Furthermore, depression mediated between rumination and craving, with a mediation effect of 160%. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that there is a close interrelationship between rumination, craving and depression in MUD patients, and that depression may play a mediating role between rumination and craving.


This is the first study to investigate the relationship between rumination and craving during withdrawal in methamphetamine dependent patients and the mediating role of depression.Among methamphetamine patients, it was found that reflection was positively correlated with rumination and depression, depression and craving, rumination and craving, and depression plays the mediating role between rumination and craving.These findings suggest that interventions to reduce depression and rumination may also be effective for withdrawal and relapse reduction in methamphetamine patients, providing further rationale for the treatment of methamphetamine patients.

OBJECTIVE: It is generally recognized that there are sex differences in many aspects of schizophrenia. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the sex differences in the prevalence and clinical correlates of insomnia in patients with chronic schizophrenia. METHODS: A total of 957 patients who met the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia were recruited in this cross-sectional study (male/female = 630/327). Demographic, clinical, and insomnia data were collected using self-reported questionnaires. Fasting blood samples were collected to evaluate the status of blood lipids. Psychopathological symptoms were evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). RESULTS: The prevalence rate of insomnia in female patients with schizophrenia was significantly higher than that in male patients (17.3% for males and 26.3% for females; χ2 = 10.74, p = 0.001). Regression analysis showed that in male patients, insomnia was independently associated with severe PANSS positive symptoms, severe PANSS depressive factor, and high levels of low-density lipoprotein levels, while in female patients, insomnia was associated with low education level, high PANSS depressive factor, and high levels of apolipoprotein B levels. CONCLUSION: This study illustrates that insomnia is more frequent in female than male schizophrenia patients, and that there are differences in the clinical correlates of insomnia by sex, suggesting that sex differences should be considered in prevention and treatment strategies for coexisting insomnia in schizophrenia patients.

Functional deficits including cognitive impairment and social dysfunction are the core symptoms of schizophrenia (SCZ), and sensory gating (SG) deficits may be involved in the pathological mechanism of functional deficits in SCZ. This study was to investigate the relationship between defective P50 inhibition and functional deficits in first-episode drug naïve (FEDN) SCZ patients. A total of 95 FEDN SCZ patients and 53 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. The Chinese version of UCSD Performance-Based Skills (UPSA), MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB), and EEG system were used to assess the social function, cognitive performance, and P50 inhibition, respectively. The MCCB total score and eight domain scores were significantly lower in patients with FEDN SCZ than those in HC (all p < 0.05). The UPSA total score and financial skills scores were also significantly lower in SCZ patients than that in the HC (all p < 0.05). Compared with HC, patients with FEDF SCZ had a higher P50 ratio (all p < 0.05). There was no correlation between P50 components and MCCB scores in patients with FEDF SCZ. However, there was only a correlation between the P50 ratio and UPSA financial skills, communication skills, or total score in patients (all p < 0.05). Defective P50 inhibition in FEDN SCZ patients may be associated with social dysfunction but not cognitive impairment, suggesting that the social dysfunction and cognitive impairment of patients with FEDN SCZ may have different pathogenic mechanisms.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is very common among methamphetamine (MA) patients, but very few studies have been conducted in China. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical correlates of ASPD among Chinese MA patients. METHODS: We recruited 627 MA patients and collected demographic and MA use data through one-on-one semi-structured interviews. ASPD was measured by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.). The Desires for Drug Questionnaire (DDQ) and visual analog scale (VAS) were used to assess drug cravings. RESULTS: The prevalence rate of ASPD among MA patients was 27.59% (173/627). Patients with ASPD had greater age at the first onset, duration of MA use, length of abstinence, VAS, DDQ desire and intention, negative reinforcement, and total DDQ scores than patients without ASPD. Stepwise binary logistic regression analysis revealed that age, age at the first onset, length of abstinence, and DDQ-negative reinforcement were independently associated with ASPD in MA patients. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the prevalence of ASPD is high among Chinese MA patients. Furthermore, some demographic and clinical variables are associated with ASPD in MA patients. SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: We focused our study on the clinical profile of ASPD and the reasons for its high prevalence in Chinese methamphetamine patients. We identified several demographic and clinical variables as correlates of the occurrence of ASPD in methamphetamine patients, which provides evidence for ASPD comorbidity in methamphetamine patients.

OBJECTIVE: There is growing evidence that reduced cortical thickness has been considered to be a central abnormality in schizophrenia. Brain imaging studies have demonstrated that the cerebral cortex becomes thinner in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. This study aimed to examine whether cortical thickness is altered in drug-naïve schizophrenia in a Chinese Han population and the relationship between cortical thickness and clinical symptoms. METHODS: We compared cortical thickness in 41 schizophrenia patients and 30 healthy controls. Psychopathology of patients with schizophrenia was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). RESULTS: The cortical thickness of left banks of superior temporal sulcus, left lateral occipital gyrus, left rostral middle frontal gyrus, right inferior parietal lobule and right lateral occipital gyrus in schizophrenia patients was generally thinner compared with healthy controls. Correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between cortical thickness of the left banks of superior temporal sulcus and general psychopathology of PANSS. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that cortical thickness abnormalities are already present early in the onset of schizophrenia and are associated with psychopathological symptoms, suggesting that it plays an important role in the pathogenesis and symptomatology of schizophrenia.Key points(1) The first-episode drug-naïve schizophrenia had reduced cortical thickness than the controls.(2) Cortical thickness was associated with psychopathological symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.

Correctly diagnosing a rare childhood cancer such as sarcoma can be critical to assigning the correct treatment regimen. With a finite number of pathologists worldwide specializing in pediatric/young adult sarcoma histopathology, access to expert differential diagnosis early in case assessment is limited for many global regions. The lack of highly-trained sarcoma pathologists is especially pronounced in low to middle-income countries, where pathology expertise may be limited despite a similar rate of sarcoma incidence. To address this issue in part, we developed a deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN)-based differential diagnosis system to act as a pre-pathologist screening tool that quantifies diagnosis likelihood amongst trained soft-tissue sarcoma subtypes based on whole histopathology tissue slides. The CNN model is trained on a cohort of 424 centrally-reviewed histopathology tissue slides of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and clear-cell sarcoma tumors, all initially diagnosed at the originating institution and subsequently validated by central review. This CNN model was able to accurately classify the withheld testing cohort with resulting receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under curve (AUC) values above 0.889 for all tested sarcoma subtypes. We subsequently used the CNN model to classify an externally-sourced cohort of human alveolar and embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma samples and a cohort of 318 histopathology tissue sections from genetically engineered mouse models of rhabdomyosarcoma. Finally, we investigated the overall robustness of the trained CNN model with respect to histopathological variations such as anaplasia, and classification outcomes on histopathology slides from untrained disease models. Overall positive results from our validation studies coupled with the limited worldwide availability of sarcoma pathology expertise suggests the potential of machine learning to assist local pathologists in quickly narrowing the differential diagnosis of sarcoma subtype in children, adolescents, and young adults.

Many studies have shown a high smoking rate and cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia. The effects of smoking and nicotine intake on cognitive function in schizophrenia are still controversial. In this study, we divided patients into heavy smoking and non-heavy smoking groups and compared the clinical characteristics and cognitive symptoms between the two groups in Chinese male patients with schizophrenia. A total of 154 heavy smoking patients and 372 non-heavy smoking patients were recruited. They completed a detailed questionnaire including general and socio-demographic data. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was rated for psychopathology. The Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) was used to assess the degree of nicotine dependence. Heavy smokers were younger, started smoking earlier and had a higher FTND total score than non-heavy smoking patients. Moreover, we found that heavy smokers had significantly lower negative symptom scores and cognitive factor scores than non-heavy smokers. Logistic regression analysis showed that cognitive factor score and age of initial smoking were significantly associated with heavy smoking. Linear regression analysis showed that cognitive factor score, age of initial smoking and dose of antipsychotics were significant predictors of the amount of smoking. Our findings suggest that there are significant differences in some demographic and clinical variables between heavy and non-heavy smokers in Chinese male patients with chronic schizophrenia. Moreover, heavy smokers have less cognitive symptoms, suggesting that heavy smoking may be beneficial for cognition of patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the mid-short-term risk factors for chronic renal failure (CRF) in children with posterior urethral valve (PUV) after valve ablation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 143 patients with PUV who underwent operation was performed. Patients were divided into CRF group (n = 39) and non-CRF group (n = 104). Clinical data of both groups such as the first resection age, last resection age, number of operations, the maximal detrusor pressure (Pdetmax), and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: The first resection age, last resection age, and the Pdetmax of patients in the CRF group were higher than those of patients in the non-CRF group (P < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis showed that the indicators related to chronic renal failure were last resection age (ß = 1.034, P < 0.05) and Pdetmax (ß = 1.068, P < 0.05). The cut-off value of last resection age was 35.5 months, Pdetmax was 41.65 cmH2O. There was positive correlation of final blood creatinine with last resection age and Pdetmax. CONCLUSION: The last resection age and Pdetmax are the risk factors of chronic renal failure in children with PUV. A Pdetmax of lower than 41.65 cmH2O indicates a good prognosis of renal function in patients with PUV.

BACKGROUND Implant placement in the posterior maxilla is typically complicated by a shortage of bone. Gelatin sponge could be combined with an appropriate material to enhance mechanical strength and maintain stability of an implant. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical application of bone grafting with bovine bone mixed with gelatin sponge. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty-four patients were divided into a control group (deproteinized bovine bone, n=26) and a test group (deproteinized bovine bone combined with gelatin sponge, n=28). Implants were placed in patients simultaneously after surgery (operation). Cone-beam computed tomography examination was carried out immediately and 6 months after surgery. Space with grafting materials was measured with Mimics software (version 16.0). RESULTS No remarkable differences were found for simultaneous placement, height of residual bone, delayed placement, width of residual bone, graft volume immediately after surgery (V1), graft volume 6 months after surgery (V2), or volumetric change rate between the test group and the control group (P>0.05). Graft volume V2 was remarkably decreased compared with V1 in the control and test groups (P=0.01). There were no significant differences for bone height immediately after surgery (H1) and bone height at 6 months after surgery (H2) between the 2 groups. Bone height H2 was markedly decreased compared with H1 (P<0.05). At 1 year after implantation, there was 1 implant loss in the control group and 2 in the test group. The implant survival rate in the control group was 97.62% and 95.24% in the test group. CONCLUSIONS Absorbable gelatin sponge combined with bovine bone particles was an effective and economical material for use in routine sinus floor elevation surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive impairment is an essential feature of schizophrenia; however, the relationship between clinical psychiatric symptoms with cognitive impairment is still unclear. Therefore, we aimed to assess cognitive deficits and the relationship between clinical symptoms and cognitive function in patients with chronic schizophrenia, which provide a reference guide for psychiatrists. METHODS: We compared the cognitive function in 312 schizophrenia inpatients and 397 healthy controls by using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). The positive and negative symptom scale (PANSS) was used to assess the clinical symptoms of the patients. RESULTS: Analysis of covariance showed that the RBANS total and four index scores (all p < 0.001) were significantly lower in patients than healthy controls. After Bonferroni correction, Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was a significant negative association between PANSS negative symptom subscale and RBANS total score and all 5 domain scores (all p < 0.01). Further regression analysis showed that negative symptoms, age, age of onset, and antipsychotic dose were important independent predictors of cognitive deficits. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that patients with chronic schizophrenia exhibit cognitive deficits compared with healthy people. Negative symptoms and some clinical variables are associated with cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia.KEYPOINTSThis study indicates that patients with chronic schizophrenia have extensive cognitive impairment shown on RBANS except for the visuospatial/constructional domain.Cognitive impairment in patients is associated with age, negative symptoms, age of onset, and antipsychotic dose.There is a significant negative association between cognitive deficits and negative symptoms in patients with chronic schizophrenia.The results of this study need to be confirmed in future studies with longitudinal designs with a large and sex-balanced sample in first-episode drug naïve patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of Compound Chamomile and Lidocaine Hydrochloride Gel for postoperative hypospadias in children. METHODS: From January to December 2020, we treated 116 children with distal hypospadias in the Department of Urology, Department of Pediatrics and the Seventh Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital, 58 by primary Snodgrass urethroplasty only (the control group) and the other 58 with Compound Chamomile and Lidocaine Hydrochloride Gel smeared on the penis postoperatively in addition (the trial group). We compared the operation time and postoperative pain score, edema regression and incidence of infection between the two groups, followed by statistical analysis using T test and Chi-square test. RESULTS: All the operations were successfully completed by the same surgeon under general anesthesia. There were no statistically significant differences between the trial and control groups in age (ï¼»2.5 ± 0.8ï¼½ vs ï¼»2.4 ± 0.6ï¼½ yr, P > 0.05) or operation time (ï¼»95.6 ± 14.5ï¼½ vs ï¼»97.1 ± 15.2ï¼½ min, P > 0.05). No incision infection occurred in any of the cases. The pain scores at dressing removal were remarkably lower in the trial than in the control group at 2 hours (1.4 ± 1.0 vs 2.6 ± 1.3, P < 0.05), 24 hours (2.2 ± 1.3 vs 3.9 ± 1.6, P < 0.05), 48 hours (1.2 ± 0.7 vs 1.6 ± 0.9, P < 0.05) and 72 hours after surgery (2.5 ± 0.8 vs 3.7 ± 1.8, P < 0.05). Significantly more cases of edema regression were achieved in the trial than in the control group at 2 weeks postoperatively (35 vs 19, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compound Chamomile and Lidocaine Hydrochloride Gel can effectively relieve pain, reduce edema and accelerate edema regression after surgery in children with hypospadias, and therefore deserves wide clinical application.、.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the possible mechanism of Yunaconitine poisoning by studying the changes of urine metabolic profile in rats chronically poisoned by Yunaconitine via non-targeted metabolomics. METHODS: A rat model of Yunaconitine poisoning was established, and a metabolomics method based on UPLC-QTOF-MS technology was used to obtain the urine metabolic profile. Principal component analysis (PCA), orthogonal projections to latent structures-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), variable importance in projection (VIP) value greater than 1, fold change (FC) value greater than 3 or less than 0.33 and P value less than 0.05 were used to screen potential biomarkers related to the toxicity of Yunaconitine. The metabolic pathway analysis was performed through the MetaboAnalyst website and pathological changes of related tissues were observed. RESULTS: Sixteen potential biomarkers including L-isoleucine were screened, which mainly involved six metabolic pathways including the biosynthesis and degradation of valine, leucine and isoleucine, pentose and glucuronate interconversions, and propanoate metabolism, alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, tyrosine metabolism. Pathological studies showed that rat toxic change in nervous system, liver and cardiac caused by Yunaconitine. CONCLUSIONS: Yunaconitine may cause neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and cardiotoxicity by affecting amino acid and glucose metabolism.

Rumination is strongly and consistently correlated with depression. Although multiple studies have explored the neural correlates of rumination, findings have been inconsistent and the mechanisms underlying rumination remain elusive. Functional brain imaging studies have identified areas in the default mode network (DMN) that appear to be critically involved in ruminative processes. However, a meta-analysis to synthesize the findings of brain regions underlying rumination is currently lacking. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis consisting of experimental tasks that investigate rumination by using Signed Differential Mapping of 14 fMRI studies comprising 286 healthy participants. Furthermore, rather than treat the DMN as a unitary network, we examined the contribution of three DMN subsystems to rumination. Results confirm the suspected association between rumination and DMN activation, specifically implicating the DMN core regions and the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex subsystem. Based on these findings, we suggest a hypothesis of how DMN regions support rumination and present the implications of this model for treating major depressive disorder characterized by rumination.

Diarrhea caused by Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is one of the most common clinical diseases observed in captive wild boars, is usually caused by an imbalance in the gut microbiome, and is responsible for piglets significant mortality. However, little research has been undertaken into the structure and function of the intestinal microbial communities in wild boar with diarrhea influenced by enterotoxigenic E. coli. In this study, fecal samples were collected and 16S-rRNA gene sequencing was used to compare the intestinal microbiome of healthy captive wild boar and wild boar with diarrhea on the same farm. We found that the intestinal microbial diversity of healthy wild boar (HWB) was relatively high, while that of diarrheic wild boar (DWB) was significantly lower. Line Discriminant Analysis Effect Size showed that at the genus level, the abundance of Escherichia-Shigella and Fusobacterium was significantly higher in DWB. Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States analysis showed that the expression of genes in pathways including infectious diseases: bacterial, metabolism of amino acids, membrane transport, and signal transduction was significantly higher in DWB. In summary, this study provides a theoretical basis for the design of appropriate means of diarrhea treatment in captive wild boar.

BACKGROUND: Hippocampal/parahippocampal structural changes accompany major depressive disorders in the elderly, but whether subthreshold depression (StD) at an advanced age is also accompanied by similar changes in hippocampal/parahippocampal volumes is still unknown. By using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis of the gray matter, we explored whether there are structural alterations of the hippocampus/parahippocampus and the correlations between its volume and participants' self-reported depressive symptoms. METHODS: Participants were 19 community-dwelling older adults with StD assessed by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D) scores. We collected magnetic resonance images of their brain compared to images of 17 healthy aged-matched adults. We used VBM to analyze differences in gray matter volume (GMV) of the hippocampus/parahippocampus between the two groups. Moreover, we examined the correlation between the GMV of the hippocampus/parahippocampus and participants' self-reported depressive symptoms. RESULTS: VBM revealed that elderly individuals with StD had substantially reduced volumes of the right parahippocampus compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, the volumes of the hippocampus/parahippocampus were significantly associated with participants' self-reported depressive symptoms in StD. CONCLUSIONS: Gray matter volume alterations in the hippocampus/parahippocampus are correlated with subthreshold depression suggesting that early structural changes in the hippocampus/parahippocampus can constitute a risk indicator of depression.

BACKGROUND: Common causes of complications of laparoscopic pyeloplasty in children include anastomotic stricture, poor drainage due to high ureteropelvic anastomosis, and torsion of ureter. Herewith, we described our modified technique of paraumbilical three-port laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty (PTLDP) to minimize these complications. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from 62 patients (age: 1-180 months, median: 12 months) with ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) who underwent pyeloplasty using our modified technique of PTLDP between February 2014 and September 2014 at our institution were reviewed. The key steps of our modified method involve identifying the lowest point of the renal pelvis and the lateral aspect of the ureter to guarantee a low pelviureteric and correct orientation anastomosis, and using a 4-0 silk for assistant suturing to avoid crushing of the anastomotic tissue. RESULTS: All surgeries were successfully completed without conversion. Three patients required an accessory port for the anastomosis. All the patients achieved complete clinical or radiologic resolution after the operation. The mean operative time was 103.4 min, and mean estimated blood loss was 14.4 mL. Mean postoperative differential function of affected kidney was 43.0 ± 16.3 % (range 24-100 %), increased from 39.7 ± 18.0 % (range 18-100 %), preoperatively (p < 0.001). The success rate was 100 % at a mean follow-up of 18.3 ± 2.9 (range 13-25) months. CONCLUSIONS: Our modified technique of PTLDP is safe and feasible and to allow high success rate for the treatment of pelviureteric junction obstruction in children.

The present study aimed to test the Sense Model of cross-linguistic masked translation priming asymmetry, proposed by Finkbeiner et al. (J Mem Lang 51:1-22, 2004), by manipulating the number of senses that bilingual participants associated with words from both languages. Three lexical decision experiments were conducted with Chinese-English bilinguals. In Experiment 1, polysemous L2 words and their L1 Chinese single-sense translation equivalents were selected as primes and targets. In Experiment 2, single-sense L1 words and their L2 translation equivalents with polysemous senses severed as primes and targets. We found translation priming effects in the L1-L2 direction, but not in the L2-L1 direction. In Experiment 3, presentation time of the L2 priming stimulus was prolonged, and significant translation priming effects were observed in the L2-L1 direction. These findings suggest that the Sense Model does not adequately explain cross-language translation priming asymmetry. The sense numbers of primes and targets, as well as the activation proportion of these senses between them, were possibly not the primary reason for cross-language translation priming asymmetry. The revised hierarchical model (Kroll and Stewart in J Mem Lang 33:149-174, 1994) and the BIA+ model (Dijkstra and van Heuven in Bilingualism Lang Cognit 5:175-197, 2002) better explain the cross-language translation priming asymmetry we found.
