INTRODUCTION: Patients with hen's egg allergy are often instructed to avoid consuming other avian eggs, such as quail eggs. However, it is unclear whether patients with an acquired tolerance to hen eggs continue to avoid consuming quail eggs. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical features of quail egg ingestion. METHODS: This prospective case series included children aged ≥1 year with hen's egg allergy who were recruited between October 2019 and February 2021 in our hospital. We conducted an oral food challenge (OFC) with three boiled quail eggs to evaluate the clinical features of quail egg ingestion in patients with acquired tolerance to hen eggs. The primary outcome was a positive OFC after ingesting three quail eggs. Secondary outcomes were cross-antigenicity between hen and quail eggs observed through the skin prick test (SPT) and pattern of quail egg allergy, comprising the onset of reaction, and severity. The correlation between the diameters of the wheals with SPT in hen and quail eggs was evaluated using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. RESULTS: A total of 62 patients underwent the quail egg OFC. The median (interquartile range) age of the participants was 3 (2-5) years. Thirty-three (53%) patients had a history of anaphylaxis due to hen eggs. The median total immunoglobulin E (IgE) level in patients who underwent the OFC with half a heated whole hen's egg was 271 (98-593) IU/mL. The median specific IgE level in egg white and ovomucoid was 9.7 (3.2-21.5) and 4.4 (1.3-6.9) UA/mL, respectively. The quail egg OFC results revealed that none of the 59 patients who ate the three quail eggs completely had an allergic reaction. The SPT-positive and SPT-negative rates in raw and boiled hen and quail egg whites were both correlated. The diameters of wheals with SPT in raw hen and quail egg whites and yolks were positively correlated. CONCLUSION: Patients with an acquired tolerance to hen eggs may not be required to avoid consuming quail eggs.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of three different techniques, namely virtual simulation technology (VS), traditional pathological typodont (TT), and quail egg (QE), in pre-clinical training of periodontal ultrasonic scaling. It also aimed to propose an integrated teaching approach for ultrasonic scaling teaching. METHODS: This single-blind randomized multi-arm trial enrolled 108 fourth-year students from Guanghua School of Stomatology at Sun Yat-sen University. The participants were randomly, evenly assigned to VS, TT, or QE group. First, the participants received theoretical review on ultrasonic scaling and demonstrative teaching. Then in the 90-minute operation training by group, students used traditional typodont equipped in head-simulators, raw quail eggs, or scaling module of the UniDental VS system respectively. Then all participants practiced on pathological models for 30 min. In the final operation examination, participants were instructed to remove the supra- and sub-gingival calculi pre-set on designated teeth by ultrasonic scalers within 30 min. Their performances were evaluated by residual calculus rate and a multi-perspective scoring scale. After the examination, questionnaires were provided to assess the teaching effects of each method and the fidelity of VS. Statistical analysis was carried out using one-way, two-way ANOVA, and multiple t-test. RESULTS: Students in VS group had significant higher total test scores than QE group (87.89 ± 6.81, 83.53 ± 8.14) and TT group (85.03 ± 6.81). VS group scored higher in several dimensional comparisons with the other two groups, especially in difficult situations. QE group had higher scores particularly in force application and supra-gingival scaling. TT group scored the highest in pivot stability practice and body position training. Students gave higher scores when assessing the fidelity of VS than experienced teachers. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the importance of specialized pre-clinical training on ultrasonic scaling for dental students. The methods adopted in current study (VS, TT and QE) each offered unique advantages in education, which can be combined to create an integrative teaching procedure. This procedure aims to provide an effective, advisable and normative pre-clinical training procedure for ultrasonic scaling. By utilizing the strengths of each method, dental educators can deliver high-quality training and ensure that students are well-prepared for clinical practice.

The effect of freeze-dried quail egg white and yolk addition to basic EK extender on morphology and motility of chicken broiler breeder semen was investigated. Fresh pooled semen was divided into eight parts: fresh, undiluted (control), diluted in 1:2 ratio (v/v) with basic EK extender, EK + 200 mg/ml of egg white, EK + 100 mg/ml of egg white, EK + 50 mg/ml of egg white, EK + 100 mg/ml of egg yolk, EK + 50 mg/ml of egg yolk, EK + 25 mg/ml of egg yolk. Semen samples were evaluated 15 min after dilution and after 6 h of storage at 4°C. In the fresh semen, the number of live normal sperm was the highest in semen diluted with EK + 200 mg of egg white and EK + 100 mg of egg yolk, while the highest sperm motility was in the neat semen. Semen storage reduced the number of normal sperm in all analysed semen samples. In the neat semen, the number of normal sperm decreased, in relation to the fresh not-stored samples, by 36.8% (from 72.3% to 35.5%), with EK extender by 9.2%, in samples enriched with egg white, from 8.4% (EK + 200 mg) to 10.0% (EK + 100 mg), and in EK with egg yolk addition, from 1.2% (EK + 50 mg) to 10.6% (EK + 100 mg). The highest percentage of motile sperm was observed in EK extender enriched with 50 mg of egg white (77.1%) and EK + 25 mg of egg yolk (65.3%).

INTRODUCTION: The testicular milieu is the machinery for the metabolism of testosterone in the male reproductive system. PURPOSE: The dysfunction of this highly regenerating system is inevitable in the condition of glucose imbalance as a result of insulin machinery impairment. Therefore, it is imperative to recommend dietary intervention for attenuating the testicular dysfunction and oxidative stress resulting from STZ-induction of diabetes. METHODS: STZ-induced diabetes (65 mg/kg, ip) was treated with QEYEM (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg/day) and quercetin (50 mg/kg/day) for 7weeks. In serum, glucose, testosterone, IL-6 and TNF-α levels were estimated, and in testis, tissues TBARS, sulfhydryl groups, nucleic acids and total protein (TP) levels were estimated. SOD, CAT and GST activities were also determined in testicular cells. Histopathological changes were evaluated in a cross-section of testis. RESULTS: Testosterone concentration was decreased while pro-inflammatory markers were increased in STZ-assaulted rats. Treatment using QEYEM of diabetic rats corrected assaults and reverse significantly the diabetic conditions. QEYEM-treated groups showed significant inhibition of TBARS levels and elevation of testicular GSH, NP-SH, total protein (TP) and nucleic acids-DNA and RNA levels. The QEYEM administration reversed the inhibited activities of SOD, CAT and GST in testicular cells in diabetic rats. The characterization of the extract carried out through HPLC analytical techniques revealed vitamins A, D and E concentrations of 0.645, 0.012 and 6.3 mg/100 g, respectively. CONCLUSION: QEYEM supplementation to STZ-induced diabetic rats for seven (7) consecutive weeks is a potential intervention against testicular damage in adult diabetic rats, probably by decreasing oxidative stress.

Chaya (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) from family Euphorbiaceae is a plant has leaves similar to papaya leaves but with dark green leaf color. This plant contains phytochemical compounds such as alkaloid, flavonoid, triterpenoids, glycoside, and tannin that can function as antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory. Chaya leaf infusion are processed into infusion before given to the quails through drinking water, this method is used to obtain the phytochemical compounds contained in chaya leaves. This study aimed to evaluate chaya leaf infusion (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) as a phytogenic source on the productivity and egg quality of japanese laying quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) aged 17-20 weeks. Chaya leaf infusion is given through drinking water and is expected to increase the productivity and quality of quail egg. The variables observed consisted of productivity (water intake, feed intake, egg weigh, QDP, egg mass, FCR, mortality) and egg quality (yolk, albumen, shell weight and percentage, egg index, yolk index, albumen index, shell thickness, yolk color, and haugh unit). This study was analyzed using the T test with 2 treatments and 4 replications: T0 = drinking water without any additives and T1 = drinking water with a concentration 10% of chaya leaf infusion. The results showed that chaya leaf infusion had a significant effect (P≤0.05) on quail day production, egg mass, albumen index, and yolk color. Besides that, supplementation chaya leaf infusion significantly reduces (P<0.05) feed convertion ratio. So that the use of 10% chaya leaf infusion in drinking water by giving it 2 times a week can increase the productivity and egg quality of laying quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) 17-20 weeks old.

Quail housing and diet significantly impact egg yield and quality. This study assessed the impact of diets and housing arrangements on Japanese quail's egg production, egg index, and quality. In two trials, birds were reared in cages and on the floor with a commercial layer diet (CLD), and an experimental diet (ED) for 32 weeks. Compared to floor-reared birds, cage birds achieved 50% egg production and sexual maturity first. With dietary effects, the CLD diet showed similar results. Furthermore, their feed efficiency, hen house egg production (HHEP), and hen day egg production (HDEP) were significantly higher in cage birds that consumed CLD. Bird livability was unaffected by the housing system, while birds fed CLD had longer lifespans. The housing system had no discernible effects on egg dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), or ash percentage. Nevertheless, the egg albumen's DM, CP, ash%, yolk's DM, CP, and CF were greater in the birds fed CLD. Barring shell thickness, weight, and Haugh unit, birds raised in cages exhibited higher egg exterior index values. Besides the yolk ratio, yolk index, and albumen weight ratio, birds given CLD exhibited enhanced egg interior quality. Ultimately, the most optimal egg production performance, improved egg quality, and prolonged lifespan of Japanese quail were obtained with cage raising and feeding practices utilizing CLD.

Quail egg yolk oil (QEYO) has a rich history of medicinal use, showcasing heightened antioxidant and bioactive properties in our prior studies. This positions QEYO as a promising candidate for therapeutic and cosmetic applications. In this investigation, QEYO was extracted using ethanol/chloroform and 2-propanol/hexane solvents. GC-MS and FTIR analyses quantified 14 major bioactive compounds in the ethanol/chloroform fraction and 12 in the 2-propanol/hexane fraction. Toxicity evaluations in fruit flies, spanning acute, sub chronic, and chronic exposures, revealed no adverse effects. Negative geotaxis assays assessed locomotor activity, while biochemical assays using fly hemolymph gauged antioxidant responses. Real-time PCR revealed the relative expression levels of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory genes. FTIR spectra indicated diverse functional groups, and the GC-MS results associated bioactive compounds with the regulation of the anti-inflammatory genes EIGER and UPD2. While no significant change in SOD activities was noted, male flies treated with specific QEYO doses exhibited increased catalase activity and total antioxidant capacity, coupled with a significant decrease in their malondialdehyde levels. This study offers valuable insights into the bioactive compounds of QEYO and their potential regulatory roles in gene expression.

As a food resource and nutrient, eggs play an important role in reducing malnutrition and improving the health status around the world. We studied the metabolite profile of three kinds of eggs using a widely-targeted metabolomics-based technique to better understand the difference in metabolites among chicken, duck, and quail eggs. We identified 617 metabolites, of which 303, 324, 302, 64, 81, and 80 differential metabolites were found by two group comparisons: quail egg yolk (QY) vs. quail egg albumen (QW), chicken egg yolk (HY) vs. chicken egg albumen (HW), duck egg yolk (DY) vs. duck egg albumen (DW), quail egg (Q) vs. duck egg (D)/chicken egg (H), and duck egg (D) vs. chicken egg (H), respectively. The Venn diagram showed that 147 metabolites were shared among the chicken, duck, and quail eggs. Additionally, the nucleotide and its derivates had the largest variations among the different types of eggs. This indicates that the flavor difference of the chicken eggs, duck eggs, and quail eggs may be related to their nucleotides and their derivates. The differential metabolites between egg yolk and albumen were primarily correlated with amino acid metabolism, protein metabolism, and immune performance. The discovery of these differential metabolites paves the way for further research on the nutritional potentials of various egg types.

BACKGROUND: Animal food shortage and finding efficient ways to produce poultry products are getting more and more important issues in the world. OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed to determine the effect of replacing corn with pasta wastes (0%, 50% and 100%) in the diet on production performance, some blood variables and the egg quality traits of laying quails. METHODS: A total of 240 laying quails were allocated into 3 experimental groups with 8 replicates for 8 weeks. Egg production percentage, egg mass, feed intake and also mortality rate and percentage of abnormal eggs, egg quality traits and blood variables were evaluated. RESULTS: None of the pasta wastes inclusion had significant effect on egg mass, abnormal egg percentage, mortality rate, yolk diameter, yolk weight, albumen height, yolk index, shell weight percentage, egg shape index and blood parameters (except for triglycerides). Replacing 100% corn with pasta by-product reduced feed conversion ratio and increased egg weight values. Replacing 100% corn by pasta wastes significantly increased the albumen weight, shell weight and also egg length and width and decreased the Haugh unit. Replacing 50% and 100% corn had a significant increase in yolk height, egg surface area and significantly decreased shell thickness and yolk colour. Overall, 100% replacement of corn by pasta by-product increased blood triglycerides compared to the 50% group. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the result of current experiment, total replacement of corn with pasta wastes could increase the egg weight and also improve feed conversion ratio in the laying quail diets.

We investigated the effects of different types of heat treatments on hen's egg white (HEw) and quail egg white (QEw) proteins and their cross-reactivity in young children. Crude extracts of raw and water-boiled HEw and QEw and commercially developed stone-baked HEw were prepared. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) was then performed. Patients diagnosed with HEw allergy were enrolled, and pooled sera were tested with each extract in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-inhibition test. A skin prick test (SPT) and oral food challenge (OFC) were also performed. The median age of 12 patients was 2.5 years. SDS-PAGE results revealed strongly stained bands for the ovomucoid of boiled HEw and QEw, while stone-baked HEw displayed remarkable changes for all protein fractions. In the ELISA-inhibition test, pre-incubation of the sera led to a profound decrease, moderate decrease, and minimal decrease in the amount of IgE binding to boiled and raw HEw, boiled and raw QEw, and stone-baked HEw proteins, respectively. SPTs and OFC demonstrated cross-reactivity values of 41.7% (5/12) and 16.7% (2/12) for boiled QEw and stone-baked HEw, respectively. We observed moderate cross-reactivity between QEw and HEw. Boiling had a limited effect on altering egg allergenicity. Commercially developed, stone-baked HEw can be an alternative food for children with HE allergy.

Influence of quail egg on pathologies has increased research interests and series of investigations are currently being done on its influence against these pathologies. The influence of quail egg against 2-butoxyethanol induced hemolysis and disseminated thrombosis was investigated to determine the enzymatic regulations that ensue in the amelioration of deleterious hemolytic and disseminated thrombosis displayed in female Wistar rats. Quail egg was separated into three (3) components (extracts)-quail egg yolk water soluble (QYWS) and fat soluble (QYFS), and albumen extract (QA) and the inorganic and organic compositions were characterized. Depranocytotic assaults was achieved by 250 mg/kg of 2-Butoxyethanol administered for 4 days, the clinical observation revealed a dark purple-red discoloration on the distal tails of the rats and therapeutic applications followed with 1000 mg/kg BWT of QYWS, QYFS and QA, and 15 mg/kg BWT of hydroxyurea. Morphological evaluation, haematological estimations and biochemical evaluations of the influence on the activities of sphingosine kinase-1, RNase, red cell carbonic anhydrase, lactate dehydrogenase, glutathione peroxidase and caspase-3, vis a vis the concentrations of sphingosine-1 phosphate, selenium and zinc (plasma and urine). In vitro anti-inflammatory influence of quail egg components were investigated against hemolysis and key enzymes of inflammation-cycloxygenase, lipoxygenase and ß-glucuronidase. The in vitro anti-inflammatory effects of QYWS, QYFS and QA were concentration dependent from 200 to 800 µg/ml against hemolysis and the key enzymes of inflammation. The characterization of inorganic and organic bioactive composition of the yolk and albumen revealed the presence of folic acid, cobalamin, pyridine, riboflavin, ascorbic acid as well as vitamins D and E, selenium, zinc, iron and calcium. These had reflected in the attenuation of the induced hemolytic and disseminated thrombosis by regulations of enzymes linked to the infarction, apoptosis and oxidative stress characterized in sickle cell index.

RESUMO

Hen's egg, as one of the most common reasons for IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity, affects both children and adults. Taking precautionary measures is suggested for the consumption of other birds' eggs for patients with allergy to hen's egg. This paper describes a rare patient with quail egg allergy, which manifested no allergic reactions after oral food challenge with hen's egg white.

Confirmed to be a new type of food resource, quail egg can provide humans with high-quality protein and offer various nutrients that can promote growth and development. Post-translational modification of proteins can regulate their molecular structures and physiological functions. However, the understanding and related research of quail egg holoproteins and post-translationally modified proteins is not yet sufficient. This study provides an in-depth analysis of quail egg proteins using an omics strategy. A total of 175 proteins, 109 N-glycoproteins (293 N-glycosylation sites) and 23 phosphoproteins (84 phosphorylation sites) were identified. Motif analysis showed that N-glycosylation sites of quail eggs were classical sites. The main characteristic sequence of the phosphorylation site is "S-X-E" (77%). Functional analysis indicated that quail egg proteins, modified proteins were enriched in the regulation of enzyme activity. These results have significant reference value for understanding the structure, function of quail eggs, explaining the physicochemical reaction during the storage.

The present research investigates on task-specific deep eutectic solvents (TDES) based aqueous two-phase extraction and purification of immunoglobulins by chromatography from quail egg. The synthesis of TDES was accomplished with quaternary ammonium salt as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and glycerol as hydrogen bond donor (HBD). Aqueous two-phase (ATPS) formation of TDESs with various salts was established and phase partitioning ability was evaluated using standard bovine immunoglobulin. Ultrasound-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (UA-LLME) was performed with ATPS of better partitioning ability for quail egg yolk. Optimization of influential variables with response surface methodology was accomplished and maximum yield was achieved for 85% (v/v) of NADES for feed of 18 µg/ml of egg yolk isolate with ultrasound temperature of 35 °C and 12 min contact time respectively. The quantification of recovery was accomplished by gel filtration process with the determination of retention time, volume and resolution of separation using marker protein. Ultrapure immunoglobulin-Y (IgY) is achieved with anion exchange chromatography and yield was calculated. The results revealed that the selective concentration of immunoglobulin-Y from quail egg yolk could be performed using environment-friendly TDES based UA-LLME coupled with chromatography.
