RESUMO

In the face of a challenging climate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) higher education that is resistant to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts aimed to increase and retain students from historically excluded groups (HEGs), there is a critical need for a support structure to ensure students from HEGs continue to be recruited retained. The Biology Undergraduate and Master's Mentorship Program (BUMMP) embodies this commitment to fostering scientific identity, efficacy, and a sense of belonging for first-generation and historically underserved undergraduate and master's students at UC San Diego. The mission of BUMMP is to cultivate a sense of belonging, instill confidence, and nurture a strong scientific identity amongst all its participants. At its core, the three pillars of BUMMP are (1) mentorship, (2) professional development, and (3) research. Quality mentorship is provided where students receive personal guidance from faculty, graduate students, postdocs, and industry leaders in navigating their career pathways. Complementing mentorship, BUMMP provides paid research opportunities and prioritizes professional development by offering workshops designed to enhance students' professional skills. These three pillars form the backbone of BUMMP, empowering students from all backgrounds and ensuring their retention and persistence in STEM. So far, we've served over 1350 mentees, collaborated with 809 mentors, and had over 180 mentees actively engaged in BUMMP-sponsored research activities. The primary focus of this paper is to provide a programmatic guideline for the three pillars of BUMMP: mentorship, professional development, and research. This will offer a blueprint for other institutions to establish similar mentorship programs. Additionally, the paper highlights the impact of the BUMMP program and surveyed mentees who have participated in the mentorship and research component of BUMMP. We showed that mentorship and research experience enhance students' sense of belonging, science identity, and science efficacy, which are key predictors of retention and persistence in pursuing a STEM career. Overall, BUMMP's expansive efforts have made a tremendous impact at UC San Diego and will continue to foster a community of future leaders who will be prepared to make meaningful contributions to the scientific community and beyond.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious diseases physicians invest significant time mentoring medical students and internal medicine residents through research projects as well as case reports. While having an infectious diseases mentor has been shown to be associated with subsequent infectious diseases fellowship application, the impact of specific scholarly activities on future application to infectious diseases fellowship is unknown. METHODS: All research and case reports published or presented from Brooke Army Medical Center between 2014-2022 with an infectious diseases senior author and a medical student or internal medicine resident first author were evaluated. The presentations and publications that resulted from each project as well as whether the trainee applied to infectious diseases were recorded. RESULTS: During the study period, 16 faculty mentored 35 medical student and resident research projects and 26 case reports. Research and case reports were primarily performed by residents (88% and 96% respectively). Compared to case reports, research projects were more likely to be presented at national meetings (77% vs 32%, p=0.0009). Of the 55 projects performed by trainees who completed training, research was associated with greater rates of infectious disease fellowship application as compared to case reports (41% vs. 4%, p=0.0012). CONCLUSION: Internal medicine resident and medical student involvement in research mentored by an infectious disease physician was associated with a greater infectious diseases fellowship application rate as compared to those who were mentored for case reports. Investment in trainee research may be a strategy for recruiting the next generation of infectious diseases physicians.

The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has deepened gender and racial diversity problems in academia. Mentorship shows women and other under-represented groups where the ladders to success are, and helps them avoid the chutes, a revised leaky pipeline metaphor. Here, we identify tangible strategies that will improve gender equity, including increasing active mentorship by male academics.

RESUMO

I was fortunate enough to start my career at what was the dawn of modern-day molecular biology and to apply it to an important health problem. While my early work focused on fundamental science, the desire to understand human disease better and to find practical applications for research discoveries resulted, over the following decades, in creating a stream of translational research directed specifically toward epithelial cancers. This could only have been possible through multiple collaborations. This type of team science would eventually become a hallmark of my career. With the development of higher throughput molecular techniques, the pace of research and discovery has quickened, and the concept of personalized medicine based on genomics is now coming to fruition. I hope my legacy will not just reflect my published works, but will also include the impact I have had on the development of the next generation of scientists and clinician scientists who inspired me with their dedication, knowledge, and enthusiasm.

RESUMO

Attending and presenting at conferences is a preeminent experience during scientific training. This article provides a trainee's perspective on strategies to promote trainee growth before, during and after scientific meetings, taking the initiatives implemented by the Canadian Society for Immunology (CSI) as an example. A foremost action was the establishment of the Trainee Engagement Committee (TEC) in 2020. The TEC members contribute to the annual symposia by participating in the local organizing committee meetings and organizing trainee-directed events. We propose actions that conference organizers can take to foster the development of the next generation of scientists. In addition, we offer advice to conference presenters on how to craft talks with trainees in mind and to attendees on how to maximize the quality and longevity of conference interactions. We hope this opinion piece evokes reflections and discussions among scientific societies, organizing committees, conference presenters and trainees alike.

BACKGROUND: The two recent simultaneous developments of high-throughput sequencing and increased computational power have brought bioinformatics to the forefront as an important tool for effective and efficient biomedical research. Consequently, there have been multiple approaches to developing bioinformatics skills. In resource rich environments, it has been possible to develop and implement formal fully accredited graduate degree training programs in bioinformatics. In resource limited settings with a paucity of expert bioinformaticians, infrastructure and financial resources, the task has been approached by delivering short courses on bioinformatics-lasting only a few days to a couple of weeks. Alternatively, courses are offered online, usually over a period of a few months. These approaches are limited by both the lack of sustained in-person trainer-trainee interactions, which is a key part of quality mentorships and short durations which constrain the amount of learning that can be achieved. METHODS: Here, we pioneered and tested a bioinformatics training/mentorship model that effectively uses the available expertise and computational infrastructure to deliver an in-person hands-on skills training experience. This is done through a few physical lecture hours each week, guided personal coursework over the rest of the week, group discussions and continuous close mentorship and assessment of trainees over a period of 1 year. RESULTS: This model has now completed its third iteration at Makerere University and has successfully mentored trainees, who have progressed to a variety of viable career paths. CONCLUSIONS: One-year (intermediate) skills based in-person bioinformatics training and mentorships are viable, effective and particularly appropriate for resource limited settings.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Formalized peer support is a promising approach for addressing the emotional and practical needs of people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to systematically identify and summarize peer support interventions studied in individuals with CKD with or without kidney replacement therapy (KRT). SOURCES OF EVIDENCE: We searched electronic databases and grey literature sources in March 2023. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Studies of any design were eligible if they reported sufficient detail on peer support interventions and outcomes for adults with CKD with or without KRT and/or their caregivers. CHARTING METHODS: We extracted information on study and intervention characteristics and reported outcomes using established frameworks. We summarized quantitative data descriptively and qualitative data thematically. Our approach observed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews. RESULTS: We included 77 studies describing 56 unique peer support interventions. Most reports were program evaluations (39%) or randomized controlled trials (27%) published after 2013. Two thirds of interventions focused on in-centre hemodialysis or mixed CKD populations, and three quarters were integrated within a kidney care clinic or program. Whereas most peer interactions centered on informational support, few programs offered focused support in areas such as transplant navigation or dialysis modality selection. Only one third of outcomes were assessed against a comparator group, with results suggesting improvements in psychological health with peer support. LIMITATIONS: Heterogeneity of included studies; lack of rigorous program evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: This review suggests recent growth in peer support programming with a variety of formats and delivery methods to address the diverse needs of people living with kidney disease. Notable gaps in peer support availability for transplant and home dialysis recipients and the lack of rigorous evaluations present opportunities to expand the reach and impact of peer support in the kidney care context.

BACKGROUND: Interest in general surgery has steadily decreased among medical students due to negative perceptions of surgeons, a lack of meaningful clerkship involvement, and inadequate mentorship. We implemented a novel mentorship-based surgery clerkship (MBSC) in which each student was matched with a resident mentor with the goals of enhancing student learning experience, meaningfulness, and interest in surgery. We hypothesized that students participating in the MBSC would report increased confidence in surgical competencies, exposure to surgical faculty, and positive perception of surgery, with no detriment to clerkship grades. METHODS: Mentors were instructed to provide the following when asked by the student: (1) weekly feedback; (2) personalized goals; (3) daily cases; (4) specific videos; (5) presentation subjects; (6) operating room skills coaching. A 5-point Likert Scale survey was distributed to the students pre and post clerkship, and median differences in Likert Scale Score pre and post mentorship were compared between mentored and control groups using the unpaired Wilcoxon's test. This was a two-arm, nonrandomized trial comparing traditional curriculum with the mentored program. RESULTS: The total sample size was n = 84. When comparing mentored to control, Wilcoxon's analysis showed greater post clerkship increases in confidence in operating room etiquette (P = 0.03), participating in rounds (P = 0.02), and suturing (P < 0.01). There were greater increases in perceived surgeon compassion (P = 0.04), respectfulness (P < 0.01), and teaching ability (P < 0.01). Median scores for meaningfulness overall (P = 0.01) and as measured as a feeling of positively impacting a patient (P = 0.02) were also increased when comparing mentored to control. More students were encouraged by a surgeon to pursue surgery (P = 0.01) and consider a surgery career themselves (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: An MBSC increases meaningfulness, confidence, skills, and exposure in various surgical competencies. Compared to nonmentored students, MBSC students have more positive perceptions of surgeons and are more likely to pursue surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Near-peer instruction has grown in popularity in medical education; however, limited data exist to support its effectiveness. This study investigates the perceptions of near-peer style instruction in third-y medical students undergoing a surgical clinical clerkship. We hypothesized that near-peer instruction would provide a beneficial educational experience to third-y medical students during their surgical clinical clerkship. METHODS: The authors anonymously surveyed third-y medical students undergoing their clinical clerkship in surgery on their perception of the near-peer instruction and mentorship they received from fourth-y medical students at the beginning of the clerkship. Near-peer instruction included teaching suturing techniques, surgical procedures and anatomy, operating room literacy, and sharing anecdotal experiences. Surveys were distributed 24 h after receiving the formal instruction. RESULTS: A total of 85 students completed the survey (78% response rate). Students reported a similar or increase in value of learning from near-peer mentors compared to attending physicians (less valuable: 1.2%; just as valuable: 52.9%; more valuable: 45.9%). The majority of students indicated they would like to experience more near-peer style instruction in medical school as demonstrated in surgical clerkship training (absolutely no: 0%; probably not: 0%; on the fence: 4.7%; probably yes: 25.9%; absolutely yes: 69.4%). After experiencing near-peer instruction and mentoring, students were more interested in becoming near-peer mentors (less interested: 1.2%; just as interested: 29.4%; more interested: 69.4%). CONCLUSIONS: Students appreciate and desire near-peer instruction, seeing it as an effective learning method. Mentees undergoing near-peer style instruction have an increased interest in becoming near-peer mentors.

INTRODUCTION: Social networking platforms have evolved into a self-promotional space. The LinkedIn platform allows users to share knowledge, research accomplishments, and network in an academic setting. Our objective was to determine LinkedIn usage trends among surgeons at a large academic institution. METHODS: A list of surgeons within the department of surgery at a large academic institute was compiled. All publicly available profiles were analyzed for their LinkedIn activity and followership. Active accounts were defined as users who have posted or interacted with any posts within the last year. Comparisons of LinkedIn usage grouped by gender, surgery division, and rank were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 133 surgeons were included. Among these surgeons, 88 had a LinkedIn profile (66.2%); however, only 43 surgeons had active usage on this platform (32.3%). The median number of followers among surgeons with a profile was 110 (IQR [24-427]). Male surgeons had a higher median of followers (167 IQR [38-502]) compared to female (54 IQR [21-209]). A greater percentage of male surgeons had a profile compared to female surgeons (68.5% M versus 61.0% F, P = 0.12). The transplant surgery division had the highest percentage of LinkedIn accounts (90.9%) followed by surgical oncology (87.5%). However, active usage was led by the pediatric surgery division (80.0%), followed by the plastic surgery division (71.4%). Instructors, assistant professors, associate professors, and professors all had LinkedIn accounts; however, instructors were the least active users with 33.3% being active on their LinkedIn. The lowest percentage of those with LinkedIn accounts were instructors (50%). Professors were found to be the most active users at 57.1%. CONCLUSIONS: Social media use is on the rise in academic surgery. Within a department of surgery at a large academic institution, only 32.3% were active users of LinkedIn, suggesting that there is room for improvement in utilizing this resource as a tool for mentorship, professional development, and networking.

INTRODUCTION: External funding is fundamental to surgeon-scientists and many Society of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS) members have received funding through National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants. The amount of funding through NIH awards amongst SAAS members has yet to be evaluated. Our objective was to quantify the amount and type of NIH funding among SAAS members. METHODS: A list of all active SAAS members was compiled. The NIH Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool's Expenditure and Results was queried to identify NIH funding among active members. RESULTS: Among 585 active SAAS members, 165 (28%) received NIH funding during their career. Of these, 110 members (66.6%) were male and 55 members (33.3%) were female. A total of 420 NIH grants have been awarded totaling $518.7 million in funding. There are currently 47 active grants totaling $34.1 million in funding. When analyzing by type, there were 226 R research grants, 63 K career development awards, 53 T and F research training and fellowships awards, and 78 other awards. Of the 63 members who received a K award, 35 members (55%) have subsequently received an R award. CONCLUSIONS: SAAS members are highly funded with 28% of members having received NIH funding totaling $518.7 million. SAAS' mission is to foster the personal and professional development of academic surgeons and we found that many SAAS members have the experience to mentor other surgeon-scientists through the process of obtaining NIH funding. Participation in organizations like SAAS can help nurture the success of future generations of surgeon-scientists.

The Covid pandemic necessitated changes in traditional mentorship and educational roles. We offer our experience in structuring a virtual dermatopathology mentorship in the midst of the pandemic. Virtual mentorships have many benefits including ease of access, lack of geographic restrictions, and financial savings, though there still remains an important and irreplaceable role for in-person relationships.

The topics covered include deciding if a career in academia is right for you; finding and working with a mentor; building collaborations and working with those from other disciplines; formulating a research question; writing a paper; reviewing papers; networking; writing fellowship or grant proposals; applying for faculty positions; and preparing and giving lectures. While written with mathematical biologists in mind, it is hoped that this paper will be of use to early and mid career researchers across the mathematical, physical and life sciences, as they embark on careers in these disciplines.

This Virtual Issue of the International Journal of Eating Disorders honors the legacy of the late Dr. C. Barr Taylor in the eating disorders (EDs) field. For decades, Dr. Taylor led the way in not only conducting the research needed to achieve the ultimate goal of making affordable, accessible, and evidence-based care for EDs available to all, but also nurturing the next generation of scientific leaders and innovators. Articles included in this Virtual Issue are a selection of Dr. Taylor's published works in the Journal in the past decade, spanning original research, ideas worth researching, commentaries, and a systematic review. We hope this Virtual Issue will inspire the next generation of research in EDs, and equally, if not more importantly, the next generation of young investigators in the field. We urge the field to continue and build upon Dr. Taylor's vision-to increase access to targeted prevention and intervention for EDs in innovative and forward-thinking ways-while embracing his unique and powerful mentorship style to lift up early career investigators and create a community of leaders to address and solve our field's biggest challenges.

BACKGROUND: Peer mentorship can be a potential tool to reduce the disparities in health research capacity between high- and low- and middle-income countries. This case study describes the potential of peer mentorship to tackle two critical issues: bridging health research capacity of doctors from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the transformation of human resource for health brain drain into "brain gain". CASE PRESENTATION: In 2021, a virtual peer mentorship group was established by 16 alumni of the University of Benin College of Medical Sciences' 2008 graduating class, residing across three continents. This program aimed to facilitate research collaboration and skill development among colleagues with diverse research experience levels, fostering a supportive environment for career development in research. The group relied heavily on digital technology to carry out its activities due to the different geographical locations of the group members. Led by experienced peer leaders, the group fostered a collaborative learning environment where members leveraged each other's expertise. Within 18 months, we published two research papers in high-impact peer-reviewed global health journals, launched a mixed-methods research study, and conducted training sessions on research design and implementation. Findings from our work were presented at conferences and workshops. However, logistical hurdles, competing priorities, structural constraints, and uneven participation presented challenges. CONCLUSION: The peer mentorship collaboration has achieved some successes so far, and this model can be emulated by other cohorts of medical professionals across LMICs. Despite the group's success at a micro- or individual level, there remain significant structural barriers to research capacity building in LMICs that can only be addressed at the meso- and macro-levels by institutions and government, respectively. A systems-level approach is required to develop and support research capacity building and foster global research collaboration and effectively turn brain drain into brain gain.

BACKGROUND: Mentorship is crucial to career advancement, medical education, and psychosocial support, especially for women and minorities. Although anesthesia mentoring programs have shown promise, there are no survey data regarding mentor-mentee relationship dynamics. This study aimed to explore the dynamics of the anesthesia mentor/mentee relationship. METHODS: A open cross-sectional web-based survey was distributed by the European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care and European Society of Regional Anesthesia to European anesthesiologists. Participation was anonymous and consent was obtained. The study evaluated responses relating to preferences, facilitators, and barriers to mentorship relationships along with sociodemographic information. RESULTS: In total, 543 anesthesiologists responded to the survey, and 406 (111 mentees, 49 mentors, 193 both, 53 neither) responded to questions regarding mentorship. 184 anesthesiologists identified as woman and 22 as other genders (non-binary, transgender, gender-fluid, and self-described gender). Moreover, 250 anesthesiologists identified as white. Both mentors and mentees indicated that personal compatibility was the most important factor for successful mentorship. Barriers to mentorship included time consumption and perceived lack of interest from the mentor and mentee. Both mentors and mentees benefited from this relationship. The former reported feeling helpful, and the latter supported the development of clinical skills. The mentors indicated that their participation was important for protecting against burnout/exhaustion and impostor syndrome. Participants reported a preference for mentorship programs organized at the departmental level, offered at the start of the anesthesiology education curricula. Women were more likely to feel a 'lack of interest' in mentoring them as a barrier (OR = 2.49, P = 0.033). Gender was a barrier for mentors of other genders (OR = 23.9, P = 0.0027) and ethnicity (OR = 48.0, P = 0.0023). White mentees found gender (OR = 0.14, P = 0.021) and ethnicity (OR = 0.11, P = 0.048) to be less important barriers to successful mentorship relationship. CONCLUSION: When possible, programs should prioritize matching mentors and mentees based on personal compatibility and experience in the mentee's area of interest. Addressing the perceived lack of interest in mentoring is essential for promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion within anesthesiology, as well as and uplifting women and minorities. BACKGROUND: The effective management of surgical and anesthesia care relies on quality data and its readily availability for both patient-centered decision-making and facility-level improvement efforts. Recognizing this critical need, the Strengthening Systems for Improved Surgical Outcomes (SSISO) project addressed surgical care data management and information use practices across 23 health facilities from October 2019 to September 2022. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SSISO interventions in enhancing practices related to surgical data capture, reporting, analysis, and visualization. METHODS: This study employed a mixed method, pre- post intervention evaluation design to assess changes in data management and utilization practices at intervention facilities. The intervention packages included capacity building trainings, monthly mentorship visits facilitated by a hub-and-spoke approach, provision of data capture tools, and reinforcement of performance review teams. Data collection occurred at baseline (February - April 2020) and endline (April - June 2022). The evaluation focused on the availability and appropriate use of data capture tools, as well as changes in performance review practices. Appropriate use of registers was defined as filling all the necessary data onto the registers, and this was verified by completeness of selected key data elements in the registers. RESULTS: The proportion of health facilities with Operation Room (OR) scheduling, referral, and surgical site infection registers significantly increased by 34.8%, 56.5% and 87%, respectively, at project endline compared to baseline. Availability of OR and Anesthesia registers remained high throughout the project, at 91.3% and 95.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the appropriate use of these registers improved, with statistically significant increases observed for OR scheduling registers (34.8% increase). Increases were also noted for OR register (9.5% increase) and anesthesia register (4.5% increase), although not statistically significant. Assessing the prior three months reports, the report submissions to the Ministry of Health/Regional Health Bureau (MOH/RHB) rose from 85 to 100%, reflecting complete reporting at endline period. Additionally, the proportion of surgical teams analyzing and displaying data for informed decision-making significantly increased from 30.4% at baseline to 60.8% at endline period. CONCLUSION: The implemented interventions positively impacted surgical data management and utilization practice at intervention facilities. These positive changes were likely attributable to capacity building trainings and regular mentorship visits via hub-and-spoke approach. Hence, we recommend further investigation into the effectiveness of similar intervention packages in improving surgical data management, data analysis and visualization practices in low- and middle-income country settings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Elders Mentoring Program (EMP) is part of a strengths-based community-based participatory research partnership with the Cree communities of Maskwacîs, Alberta, Canada. The EMP objective is to promote maternal and child health through traditional Cree teachings and support from community Elders to pregnant women and their partners. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Elders decided to shift the program to an online format in early 2021. The Elders continued to offer mentorship to program participants virtually by Zoom and telephone, and online workshops. The objective of this study was to qualitatively explore the experiences of women that took part in the virtual EMP. METHODS: We utilized qualitative description as our method, informed by our overarching community-led research partnership. Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted by Maskwacîs research assistants (RAs) with 11 women who participated in the virtual program. Interviews were conducted between December 2021 and June 2022. The participants were asked about their perceptions of the program and its benefits. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded by four RAs using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Although cultural teachings are traditionally offered in person, the shift to the virtual platform was greatly appreciated by all the women. Technology can be a useful tool for cultural teachings and language to be shared among community members when they cannot be physically together. Four main themes emerged from the data, representing the participants' experiences, and learning through their interactions with the Elders from the EMP. The themes are: Ohpikihâwasowin (grounding and guiding on the path to be a healthy parent); Indigenous ways of healing; On the path of cultural learning; and Identity for self and baby. CONCLUSION: The virtual adaptation of the EMP allowed a space for Elders to offer support to women living in and out of the community to provide guidance with their pregnancies and into motherhood. The workshops and one-on-one calls allowed for cultural revitalization which is critical for Indigenous well-being. All the participants found that the teachings and interactions positively impacted their pregnancy and parenthood. Overall, the virtual program demonstrated a venue for intergenerational healing and resilience.

OBJECTIVE: The transition from pediatric to adult care is challenging for patients and families with spina bifida (SB). Lifelong care relationships yield to new care environments that are typically larger, less personal, and less engaged with the nuances of SB care. Adolescence and young adulthood are often characterized by personal and psychological stresses due to factors independent of illness or chronic medical complexity. Surveys have demonstrated that transition is associated with uncertainty, anxiety, and elevated risk of adverse events for many SB patients. To help mitigate this, the authors developed a trial mentorship program between teen patients with SB and undergraduate/medical students. This study analyzes and presents the initial outcomes from this program. METHODS: The authors created the Join, Unite, Motivate, and Prepare (JUMP) program to improve readiness for the transition process. The mentee target population was patients aged 13-19 years receiving care at the authors' SB clinic. Mentors were screened/approved undergraduate/medical students who volunteered to participate and successfully completed online training in mentorship. Upon enrollment, each patient set a combination of clinical, self, and parent/guardian goals using the individualized transition plan. These goals were shared with the mentor, mentee, parent/guardian, and physician. To monitor success, the SB program director routinely met with each mentor to discuss progress made and areas of growth. These included continuous quantitative and qualitative goal setting and failures that needed to be addressed for each agenda. RESULTS: Thirteen mentor-mentee matches were created over 9 months. Of the 13 matches, 6 had more than 5 communications after the initial meeting, and 1 mentor-mentee match is still in contact today. Noted success in the program has been through mentees gaining employment, applying for scholarships, starting college, and connecting with others who are going through similar circumstances. Challenges have arisen through failure to follow-up after the initial office visit, risk with using the virtual platform, and wide geographic dispersion of both mentors and mentees across the authors' state. CONCLUSIONS: Transition from pediatric to adult care for adolescents with SB has proven to be a large hurdle. Easing this process through well-thought-out, interactive processes has the potential to improve readiness, increase patient autonomy, and provide exposure to the adult healthcare community. However, the mentorship model, in the SB setting, has not proven to be the remedy.
