Nanotechnology has gained immense popularity and observed rapid development due to the remarkable physio-chemical properties of nanoparticles (NPs) and related nanomaterials. The green production of NPs has many benefits over traditional techniques because the current procedures are expensive, time-consuming, and involve harmful substances that limit their applicability. This study aimed to use a novel green source, theSalsola imbricata(SI) plant, which is commonly found in Central Asia and known for its medicinal properties as a reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of AgNPs. The current study also utilized efficient statistical design, the Plackett-Burman Design (PBD) of Experiment method to synthesize the NPs. The characterization of NPs was carried out using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PBD results showed that only two out of four factorsi.e.AgNO3concentration and incubation time, were significant for the synthesis of SI-AgNPs. While remaining factors, incubation temperature and plant extract: AgNO3ratio were non-significant. The SEM analysis result showed that SI-AgNPs had a size of 20-50 nm. The SI-AgNPs demonstrated strong antibacterial activity against oral pathogens such asS. mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus, with the highest efficacy observed at a concentration of 2 mg ml-1. The addition of SI-AgNPs in glass ionomer cement significantly increased the antibacterial activity of GIC againstS. mutans. Based on the results of the current study, the plant based AgNPs can be further evaluated in detail as alternate antimicrobial agent either alone or in combination with other antimicrobial agents for different dental applications.

BACKGROUND Several auxiliary features have been proposed to achieve sustainable retention for short-prepared dental crowns; however, achieving retention is challenging. This study aimed to assess the impact of increased total occlusal convergence and auxiliary preparation factors like box and groove on the retention form of short tooth preparations. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty resin machine-milled dies with a height of 3 mm and a deep chamfer margin of 1 mm were prepared to mimic the short-prepared molar. Initially, 2 teeth were prepared following the guidelines, and the total occlusal convergence was kept at 10° and 20°, respectively. Auxiliary features such as the proximal box and buccal groove were prepared on separate 20° dies. Eighty dies were prepared with 10 samples each for 10°, 20°, 20° with proximal box and 20° with buccal groove for zirconia (n=40) and metal crowns (n=40). Cementation was done with glass ionomer luting cement, and a pull-off test was conducted. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc fisher least significant difference test (P<0.05). RESULTS The highest mean was observed in the proximal box group with the metal crown (14.59), and the lowest in the group with 20° zirconia crowns (9.12). Within groups, the highest retentive values were found for the 20° taper with proximal box preparation; the lowest was for the 20° taper group. CONCLUSIONS Within the study limitations, it could be concluded that incorporating a proximal box or buccal groove in short tooth preparations with an increased total occlusal convergence improved retentive values.

Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a self-adhesive dental restorative material composed of a polyacrylic acid liquid and fluoro-aluminosilicate glass powder. It is commonly used for cementation during dental restoration. This study aimed to systematically review the existing literature regarding the clinical performance of GIC in load-bearing dental restorations. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in EBSCO, PubMed, Embrace, and Cochrane databases. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included in the search, and a broad search technique was used, where inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. After a thorough evaluation, 12 RCTs were extensively reviewed, and whether GIC is suitable for load-bearing restorations was determined. Significant variations in staining surface or margin, color match, translucency, esthetic anatomical form, retention, material fracture, marginal adaptation, surface luster, occlusal contour, wear, and approximal anatomical form indicated the unsuitability of GIC. By contrast, significance differences in patient view and periodontal response indicated that GIC is suitable. No significant differences in postoperative sensitivity, recurrence of caries, or tooth integrity were observed. Nevertheless, the results of the review demonstrated that the clinical performance of GIC is comparable to that of traditional restorative materials with regard to the parameters analyzed. GIC is a suitable restorative material for load-bearing restorations regarding surface margin, esthetic anatomical form, material retention and fracture, marginal adaptation, occlusal contour, wear, and approximal anatomical form. It reduces other parameters, such as postoperative sensitivity, recurrence of caries, and tooth integrity.

BACKGROUND This study evaluated the effects of milling (CADCAM), 3D printing, preparation taper angles (10-degree and 20-degree), auxiliary retentive features (groove and box), and provisional cement types (conventional and resin-based) on the adhesive failure stress of 3-mm short provisional crowns (PC). The research was motivated by the need to understand how digital dentistry technologies impact the retention and durability of provisional crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 160 working models (3D-printed) and PCs [80 milled (CopraTemp)/80 printed (Asiga)] were fabricated from two 10- and 20-degree typodont master models and two 20-degree 3D-printed master models (groove and box), simulating a 3 mm high all-ceramic short PC. After provisional cementation with conventional (Kerr TempBond) and resin-based (ProviTemp) cements, 16 subgroups (n=10 each) underwent thermocycling (10 000 cycles; 5-55°C) and pull-off tests on a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test. RESULTS Conventional cement failed at lower stress for milled (47.68 to 73.54) and printed (48.40 to 77.91) as compared to resin cement for milled (104.2 to 137.27) and printed (184.85 to 328.84), respectively, with significant differences. Increased taper and groove decreased failure load except for the printed PC/resin cement combination. Use of proximal box preparation increased retention significantly. Except for 20-degree taper cemented with conventional cement, the differences in auxiliary retentive features for milled and printed provisional crowns were statistically significant at P≤0.05. CONCLUSIONS 3D-printed PC, resin-based cement, 10-degree taper, and proximal box preparation were associated with higher retention than milled, conventional cements, 20-degree taper, and vertical groove.

BACKGROUND A luting agent is a dental cement used to secure a dental restoration. This study aimed to evaluate retentive strength of 50 endodontically-treated single-rooted mandibular second premolars (extracted) restored using 5 common luting (cement) agents. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty single-rooted mandibular second premolars with adequate root length and uniform size/shape were decoronated. After completing endodontic biomechanical preparation and obturation, root canals of all specimens were prepared to receive a cast post core. Depending upon cementation type, CPC specimens were divided in 5 groups (10 each) (Gp): Zinc phosphate (Gp ZP), polycarboxylate (Gp PC), glass ionomer (Gp GI), resin-modified glass ionomer (Gp RGI), and resin cement (Gp RC). Retentive strength was determined using the adhesive failure pull-out test. Mean/standard deviations were calculated for tensile forces (in kilograms) and differences were determined using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Multiple comparison was performed using the t test. A P value of ≤0.05 indicated a statistically significant difference. RESULTS The order of mean tensile strength from higher to lower was Gp RC (21.46) >Gp RGI (18.17) >Gp GI (16.07) >Gp ZP (15.33) >Gp PC (13.63). Differences in retentive strengths between the cements were significant (P≤0.05). Multiple-group comparisons showed that except for Gp ZP and Gp GI, all groups differed significantly from each other. CONCLUSIONS All investigated cements provided optimal retentive strengths, with wide differences between them. Resin cements should be used when CPC removal is not anticipated, while polycarboxylate or zinc phosphate should be used if CPC removal is anticipated.

This study investigated the antimicrobial activity of surface pre-reacted glass ionomer eluate (S-PRG) against oral microcosm biofilms collected from the oral cavity of patients. Dental biofilm samples were collected from three volunteers to form microcosm biofilms in vitro. Initially, screening tests were carried out to determine the biofilm treatment conditions with S-PRG eluate. The effects of a daily treatment for 5 min using three microcosm biofilms from different patients was then evaluated. For this, biofilms were formed on tooth enamel specimens for 120 h. Biofilms treated with 100% S-PRG for 5 min per day for 5 days showed a reduction in the number of total microorganisms, streptococci and mutans streptococci. SEM images confirmed a reduction in the biofilm after treatment. Furthermore, S-PRG also reduced lactic acid production. It was concluded that S-PRG eluate reduced the microbial load and lactic acid production in oral microcosm biofilms, reinforcing its promising use as a mouthwash agent.

OBJECTIVES: To undertake a cost-effectiveness analysis of restorative treatments for a first permanent molar with severe molar incisor hypomineralization from the perspective of the Brazilian public system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two models were constructed: a one-year decision tree and a ten-year Markov model, each based on a hypothetical cohort of one thousand individuals through Monte Carlo simulation. Eight restorative strategies were evaluated: high viscosity glass ionomer cement (HVGIC); encapsulated GIC; etch and rinse adhesive + composite; self-etch adhesive + composite; preformed stainless steel crown; HVGIC + etch and rinse adhesive + composite; HVGIC + self-etch adhesive + composite, and encapsulated GIC + etch and rinse adhesive + composite. Effectiveness data were sourced from the literature. Micro-costing was applied using 2022 USD market averages with a 5% variation. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER), net monetary benefit (%NMB), and the budgetary impact were obtained. RESULTS: Cost-effective treatments included HVGIC (%NMB = 0%/ 0%), encapsulated GIC (%NMB = 19.4%/ 19.7%), and encapsulated GIC + etch and rinse adhesive + composite (%NMB = 23.4%/ 24.5%) at 1 year and 10 years, respectively. The benefit gain of encapsulated GIC + etch and rinse adhesive + composite in relation to encapsulated GIC was small when compared to the cost increase at 1 year (gain of 3.28% and increase of USD 24.26) and 10 years (gain of 4% and increase of USD 15.54). CONCLUSION: Within the horizon and perspective analyzed, the most cost-effective treatment was encapsulated GIC restoration. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study can provide information for decision-making.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate the effect of a glass ionomer cement (GIC; Fuji 9 Gold Label, GC) with added calcium orthophosphate particles and a calcium silicate cement (CSC; Biodentine, Septodont) regarding ion release, degradation in water, mineral content, and mechanical properties of demineralized dentin samples. METHODS: GIC, GIC + 5% DCPD (dicalcium phosphate dihydrate), GIC + 15% DCPD, GIC + 5% ß-TCP (tricalcium phosphate), GIC + 15% ß-TCP (by mass), and CSC were evaluated for Ca2+/Sr2+/F- release in water for 56 days. Cement mass loss was evaluated after 7-day immersion in water. Partially demineralized dentin disks were kept in contact with materials while immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 °C for 56 days. The "mineral-to-matrix ratio" (MMR) was determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Dentin hardness and elastic modulus were obtained by nanoindentation. Samples were observed under scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Data were analyzed by ANOVA/Tukey test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Ca2+ release from CSC and GIC (µg/cm2) were 4737.0 ± 735.9 and 13.6 ± 1.6, respectively. In relation to the unmodified GIC, the addition of DCPD or ß-TCP increased ion release (p < 0.001). Only the dentin disks in contact with CSC presented higher MMR (p < 0.05) and mechanical properties than those restored with a resin composite used as control (p < 0.05). Mass loss was similar for GIC and CSC; however, the addition of DCPD or ß-TCP increased GIC degradation (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Despite the increase in ion release, the additional Ca2+ sources did not impart remineralizing capability to GIC. Both unmodified GIC and CSC showed similar degradation in water. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: CSC was able to promote dentin remineralization.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of restorations made with a glass-hybrid restorative system (GHRS), a high-viscosity glass ionomer restorative material (HVGIC), a high-viscosity bulk-fill composite resin (HVB), a flowable bulk-fill composite resin (FB), and a nanohybrid composite resin (NH), which are commonly preferred in clinical applications on the fracture resistance of teeth in-vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred intact human premolar teeth were included in the study. The teeth were randomly divided into ten groups (n = 10). No treatment was applied to the teeth in Control group. Class II cavities were prepared on the mesial surfaces of the remaining ninety teeth in other groups. For restoration of the teeth, a GHRS, a HVGIC, a HVB, a FB, and a NH were used. Additionally, in four groups, teeth were restored using NH, GHRS, and HVGIC with open and closed-sandwich techniques. After 24 h, fracture resistance testing was performed. One-way ANOVA and Tukey HDS tests were used for statistical analysis of the data. RESULTS: The fracture resistance values of Control group were statistically significantly higher than those of GHRS, HVGIC, FB, NH, HVGIC-CS, GHRS-OS, and HVGIC-OS groups(p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference observed between the fracture resistance values of Control, HVB, and GHRS-CS groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that the use of HVB and the application of GHRS with a closed-sandwich technique may have a positive effect on the fracture resistance of teeth in the restoration of wide Class II cavities. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The use of high-viscosity bulk-fill composite resin and the application of glass-hybrid restorative system with the closed-sandwich technique in the restoration of teeth with wide Class II cavities could increase the fracture resistance of the teeth.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the 5-year clinical performance of a glass hybrid restorative system and a nano-hybrid resin composite in moderate to large two-surface class II cavities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was carried out by dental schools in Zagreb, Croatia; Izmir, Turkey; Belgrade, Serbia; and Milan, Italy. A total of 180 patients requiring two class-II two-surface restorations in the molars of the same jaw were recruited. The teeth were randomly restored with either a nano-hybrid resin composite (Tetric EvoCeram, Ivoclar Vivadent) or a glass-hybrid material (EQUIA Forte, GC). During the 5-year follow-up, two calibrated evaluators at each centre scored the restorations annually using the FDI-2 scoring system. The survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using non-parametric matched pair tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between the overall survival and success rates of the two types of restorations (p>0.05). The success rates (FDI-2 scores 1-3) for EQUIA Forte were 81.9% (average annual failure rate: 3.9%) and 90.7% for Tetric EvoCeram (average annual failure rate: 1.9%). The survival rates (FDI-2 scores 1-4) for EQUIA Forte and Tetric EvoCeram were 94.5% and 94.4%, respectively, with an average annual failure rate of 1.1%. CONCLUSIONS: In terms of success and survival rates, both the glass-hybrid restorative system and the nano-hybrid resin composite have been shown to perform satisfactorily. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results of this study indicate that EQUIA Forte can be one of the therapeutic options for moderate to large two-surface class II restorations of posterior teeth.

Methods: 22 specimens prepared with Cention and RMGIC were embedded in primary teeth mounted in acrylic for analysing shear bond strength. Shear bond strength was analysed using a universal testing machine. The modes of failure in samples were observed under a stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. 22 customised samples of Cention N and RMGIC were prepared and categorised as group A and group B, respectively. The flexural and compressive strengths of these samples were evaluated using a universal testing machine. Results: The shear bond strength of RMGIC was higher than that of Cention N, whereas the compressive and flexural strengths of Cention N were significantly higher than those of RMGIC. The modes of failure were predominantly adhesive followed by mixed failures. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that Cention N demonstrated superior mechanical properties compared with RMGIC and can therefore be recommended for restorations in primary posterior teeth. Cention N being a smart, esthetic, self-cured, or dual-cured material with better mechanical properties offers a wide range of applicability in primary teeth.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare changes on the surface roughness of conventional and colored compomers used in pediatric dentistry caused by beverages frequently consumed by children. METHODS: 176 conventional and colored compomer discs were prepared. The discs were divided into four equal subgroups and incubated in different beverages: distilled water, milk, fruit juice, and cola. The surface roughness of the samples was measured and recorded on Days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28. The data obtained were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: In distilled water and milk, the surface roughness of the conventional compomer was higher than the colored compomer after Day 7 (P< 0.05). In fruit juice and cola, the surface roughness of conventional and colored compomers was similar at all timepoints (P< 0.05). There was a significant difference between discs incubated in distilled water and milk, on Days 21 and 28 (P< 0.05). The colored compomer showed the highest roughness in cola on Day 1, whereas the conventional compomer showed the highest roughness in milk on Day 21. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Cola caused the highest surface roughness on the surface of colored compomers, whereas milk caused the highest surface roughness on conventional compomers.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the clinical and radiographic efficacy of Equia system bulk fill glass hybrid material with composite resins in the permanent restoration of pediatric patients' permanent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 44 pediatric patients aged 8-16 who applied to Necmettin Erbakan University Pediatric Dentistry Department. The groups were formed as symmetrical teeth in the same patient using the split-mouth design. The study included class I caries lesions of 144 permanent teeth. Group 1 was restored with the Equia system bulk fill glass hybrid material (Equia Forte HT + Equia Forte Coat [GC, Co, Tokyo, Japan]) (n = 72) and Group 2 with the Charisma Smart universal composite resin (Kulzer, Gmbh, Hanau, Germany) + Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray, Noritake, Sakazu, Okayama) (n = 72). Evaluations were performed clinically and radiographically by two physicians in 2nd week, 3rd month, 6th month, and 12th month and the results were recorded. Clinical evaluation was carried out using modified-USPHS criteria. Obtained data were statistically analyzed using Kendall's W test and Cochran's Q test for the comparison within the group, and the Chi-square test for the comparison between groups. RESULTS: Among the materials utilized in the study, there was no statistically significant difference in marginal adaptation, marginal discoloration, retention, anatomical form, postoperative sensitivity, and secondary caries according (p > 0.05). Group 2 outperformed statistically significant Group 1 in terms of color match in all periods (p < 0.05). While there was no statistically significant difference in surface structure between the groups in 2nd week and 3rd month (p > 0.05), there was a statistically substantial difference in 6th, and 12th months (p < 0.05). No secondary caries or periapical lesions were found in any restorations during radiographic evaluation. CONCLUSION: After a year, the clinical performance of both Equia and composite resins was equivalent and successful in the majority of the measures against which they were evaluated. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Based on the results of the research, Equia system bulk fill glass hybrid restorations are considered a viable alternative to composite resins in class I permanent teeth restorations.

OBJECTIVE: This randomized, double-blind clinical investigation assessed the performance of two high-viscosity glass-ionomer systems and a bulk-fill composite in different cavity types. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 146 participants, 360 (class I, II, and V) cavities were restored using three different materials (Equia Forte HT, Chemfill Rock, and SonicFill 2) with equal allocation. Using modified World Dental Federation criteria, restorations were assessed after 1 week, 6 months, and 18 months by an experienced examiner. Statistical analysis was conducted using Fisher's exact and Wilcoxon signed rank tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: After 18 months, 267 restorations were assessed in 116 participants. After 18 months, 5 Equia Forte HT restorations failed due to debonding and fracture. Only one loss was observed in the Chemfill Rock restorations. Equia Forte HT exhibited significantly lower retention than SonicFill 2 after 18 months (p = 0.019), irrespective of cavity type. At 1 week, 3 Class I restorations with SF showed postoperative sensitivity. The type of cavity did not affect the performance of the restorative materials used (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Equia Forte HT and Chemfill Rock presented similar clinical performance regardless of color match. Equia Forte HT showed a lower performance compared to SonicFill 2. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Glass-hybrid materials presented a lower performance in terms of color match or retention when compared to a sculptable bulk-fill composite resin.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The optimal pretreatment of radicular dentin before cementing a post with glass ionomer cement is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the retention of prefabricated tapered titanium posts to endodontically treated teeth after applying different pretreatment protocols on the radicular dentin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The coronal part of 32 single-rooted human teeth was removed 1-mm coronally to the cemento-enamel junction. All specimens received endodontic treatment, and the root canals were prepared with an instrument to a depth of 10 mm to receive a titanium post. The dentin walls of each specimen were roughened with a hand-held diamond cutting instrument. The specimens were randomly divided according to the surface treatments into 4 groups (n=8): KW: etched with 20% to 30% polyacrylic acid (PAA) (Ketac Conditioner) and rinsed with water; KWI: etched with 20% to 30% PAA, rinsed with water and 70% isopropanol; DW: etched with 30% to 50% PAA (Durelon Liquid) and rinsed with water; DWI: etched with 30% to 50% PAA, rinsed with water and 70% isopropanol. The prefabricated titanium posts were airborne-particle abraded and cemented with glass ionomer cement. The specimens were fixed in custom-made brass cylindrical holders with autopolymerizing acrylic resin with the holder parallel to the long axis of the post. All specimens were stored in water for 3 days at 37 °C. Retention was evaluated using a tensile test with a universal testing machine (Zwick Z010) at a crosshead speed of 2 mm/min. Data were statistically analyzed with a 1-way ANOVA, followed by the Tukey post hoc test for pairwise comparisons between groups (α=.05). RESULTS: Mean ±standard deviation retention values ranged from 201.8 ±55.5 N (KW) to 328.1 ±70.9 N (DWI). Groups DWI and KWI (316 ±58.3 N) showed statistically higher retention values than group KW (P<.05) but did not significantly differ from retention values obtained in group DW (P>.05). CONCLUSIONS: An additional final rinse with isopropanol after using PAA increased the retention of the post significantly for all groups. Although group DWI achieved the highest retention values, pretreatment of radicular dentin as in group KWI may also be considered.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Preserving and strengthening the remaining tooth structure of compromised flared root canals after endodontic treatment is challenging. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the adaptation of milled polymer- infiltrated ceramic, fiber-reinforced composite resin, and high-performance semicrystalline thermoplastic resin posts as used to restore mandibular premolars with flared root canals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty sound mandibular premolars were randomly divided into 4 groups: custom Vita Enamic (CV), custom fiber-reinforced composite resin (CF), custom polyetherketoneketone (CP), and prefabricated fiber (RF) posts. After endodontic treatment, each tooth was sectioned 1.5 mm occlusal to the cementoenamel junction. Then, the post space was prepared and flared, except the RF group, to a depth of 9 mm. The post space in RF group was prepared with a post drill. For the CV, CF, and CP groups, the posts were milled, finished, and cemented to their corresponding teeth. Each tooth was scanned using a microcomputed tomography device, and the reconstructed images were analyzed in mesiodistal, buccolingual, and horizontal planes. The cement thickness, cement volume, and volume of voids were measured. The data were analyzed using 3-way ANOVA (cement thickness) and 2-way ANOVA (cement volume and voids volume) tests followed by the post hoc Tukey test (α=.05). RESULTS: The 3-way ANOVA test revealed a significant interaction (P<.001) between material type, section, and surface on the cement thickness. The mean cement thickness in the RF group was significantly higher than in the CV group (P=.001) and CF group (P=.005). The least mean cement thickness was at the apical section followed by the cervical and middle sections. Regarding cement volume, the 2-way ANOVA test showed statistically significant interaction between material type and section. The mean cement volume in the RF group was significantly lower than in the CV group (P=.001), CF group (P=.001), and CP group (P=.001). The highest mean cement volume was in the cervical section followed by the middle and apical sections. The 2-way ANOVA test showed statistically significant interaction (P<.001) between material type and section on the volume of voids. Significant differences were found between the mean volume of voids at the cervical and middle sections (P=.001) and the cervical and apical sections (P=.002). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with prefabricated fiber posts, digitally fabricated polymer-infiltrated ceramic and fiber-reinforced composite resin posts had a thinner cement layer with minimal thickness at the apical section. The digitally fabricated posts had higher cement volume, especially at the cervical section, than prefabricated fiber posts. High volumes of voids were related to the cervical section of all tested posts.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Little is known about the effect of different composite resin cements on the bond strength of prefabricated and milled glass fiber post-and-cores. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the push-out bond strengths of root dentin and standard, relined, or computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) glass fiber post-and-cores luted with conventional, universal, or self-adhesive composite resin cement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Post spaces were prepared in 90 premolars. Standard and relined prefabricated and CAD-CAM-milled glass fiber post-and-cores were luted with conventional (RelyX ARC; 3M ESPE), universal (RelyX Ultimate; 3M ESPE), and self-adhesive (RelyX U200; 3M ESPE) composite resin cement (n=10). All specimens were thermally aged (5000 cycles at 5°C and 55°C with a 20-second dwell time) and mechanical fatigue (1 000 000 cycles at 2 Hz, 50-N load). The specimens were sectioned perpendicularly to the root long axis into 1-mm-thick sections (apical, middle, and cervical root thirds), the push-out bond strength was determined, and the mode of failure recorded. Data were submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Bonferroni-Dunn multiple comparison test (α=.05). RESULTS: Push-out bond strength values did not differ (P>.05) among posts at the same root thirds. Standard posts showed higher bond strength than CAD-CAM at the apical third for data grouped by composite resin cements (P<.001). The cervical root thirds had higher bond strength than the apical thirds (P<.05). The cervical, middle, and apical root thirds showed decreasing bond strength values for each type of post for data grouped by composite resin cement (P<.001). Adhesive failures at the dentin-cement interface were predominant. CONCLUSIONS: The type of posts and cements did not affect the bond strength of glass fiber posts. The cervical root thirds had better bonding performance than the apical thirds.

BACKGROUND: Achieving sufficient professional mechanical biofilm removal (PMPR) can be challenging in supportive periodontal therapy (SPT), particularly in patients with prosthetic restorations. This experimental study aimed to simulate five years of SPT with periodic PMPR near the luting gap of ceramic restorations using a rubber cup with polishing paste (RCP), air polishing with two different low-abrasive powders (LAPA-1: glycine powder, LAPA-2: erythritol powder), and non-professional mechanical cleaning (control group) to measure the extent of volume loss in the luting gap after baseline (∆V = Vbaseline-V1-5; in µm3). METHODS: Two operators randomly performed PMPR ten times for thirty seconds on one of four sides of 30 crown replicas fixed with glass-ionomer cement (CGIZ: n = 15) or adhesive bonding (CAB: n = 15). The replicas were separated in a template during PMPR, and afterward, cleaned for five seconds per side with a sonic brush under flowing water. The artificial aging process between two PMPRs simulated a 5-year SPT with two PMPRs per year. Profilometric measurements were performed at baseline and after each second PMPR to obtain the mean change of ∆V. The statistical evaluation of the data was carried out using nonparametric tests with Bonferroni correction applied for multiple tests. RESULTS: Ninety-six out of 120 sides could be included in the analysis. PMPR methods showed a loss of substance in the luting gap with a ∆V (mean(standard deviation)) of -4.35 × 106(4.8 × 106)µm3 versus 8.79 × 104(1.05 × 106)µm3 for control at V5 (p ≤ 0.001). No significant differences of ∆V1-5 values could be identified in the control (p > 0.05), whereat all PMPRs showed a significant increasing loss of substance per simulated year (p ≤ 0.001). Intergroup comparison identified LAPA-1 as having the highest significant loss of substance determined on CAB (∆V: -1.05 × 107 (7,2 × 106) µm3), followed by LAPA-2 on CAB (∆V: -6.29 × 106 (4,24 × 106) µm3), LAPA-1 on CGIZ (∆V: -4.15 × 106 (3,25 × 106) µm3), LAPA-2 on CGIZ (∆V: -3.0 × 106 (2,23 × 106) µm3), RCP on CAB (∆V: -1.86 × 106 (2,23 × 106) µm3) and CGIZ (∆V: -1.2 × 106 (1,31 × 106) µm3; p ≤ 0.001)). CONCLUSIONS: Within study limitations, all PMPRs caused a significantly higher loss of substance in the luting gap versus control without professional intervention, with the highest values in the CAB group for LAPA-1, LAPA-2 and RCP. Similar findings were observed for CGIZ, although the loss values were lower.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of various surface coating methods on surface roughness, micromorphological analysis and fluoride release from contemporary resin-modified and conventional glass ionomer restorations. MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of 72 permanent human molars were used in this study. The teeth were randomly assigned into 2 groups according to type of restorative materials used; resin modified glass ionomer cement and conventional glass ionomer (SDI Limited. Bayswater Victoria, Australia). Each group was subdivided into 3 subgroups according to the application of coat material; Sub-group1: without application of coat; Sub-group2: manufacturer recommended coat was applied and sub-group3: customized (vaseline) coat was applied. Each group was then subdivided into two divisions according to the time of testing; immediate (after 24 h) and delayed (after 6 months of storage). Three specimens from each sub-group were selected for surface roughness test (AFM) and another 3 specimens for the micromorphological analysis using scanning electron microscope (SEM). For the fluoride release test, a total of 60 cylindrical discs were used (n = 60). The discs were randomly split into 2 groups according to type of restorative materials used (n = 30); resin modified glass ionomer cement and conventional glass ionomer. Each group was subdivided into 3 subgroups (n = 10) according to the application of the coat material; Sub-group1: without application of coat; Sub-group2: with the manufacturer recommended coat and sub-group3: with application of customized (vaseline) coat. Data for each test was then collected, tabulated, were collected, tabulated, and tested for the normality with Shapiro-Wilk test. Based on the outcome of normality test, the significant effects of variables were assessed using appropriate statistical analysis testing methods. RESULTS: Regarding the data obtained from surface roughness test, Shapiro-Wilk test showed normal distribution pattern of all values (p > 0.05). Accordingly, Two-way ANOVA outcome showed that the 'type of restoration' or 'test time' had statistically significant effect on the AFM test (p < 0.05). Regarding Fluoride specific ion electrode test 2-way ANOVA followed by Least Significant Difference (LSD) Post-hoc test revealed significant difference among the groups (p < 0.05). It showed that SDI GIC group after 14 days of measurement had the highest mean of fluoride release (36.38 ± 3.16 PPM) and SDI RMGIC after 30 days of measurement had the second highest mean of fluoride release (43.28 ± 1.89 PPM). Finally, regarding the micromorphological analysis using SEM, a slight difference was observed between the studied groups. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this study, various coatings enhance surface roughness in the initial 24 h of restoration insertion. Different coat types seems that have no influence on fluoride release and the micromorphological features of the restoration/dentin interface.

BACKGROUND: In dentistry, glass-ionomer cements (GICs) are extensively used for a range of applications. The unique properties of GIC include fluoride ion release and recharge, chemical bonding to the tooth's hard tissues, biocompatibility, a thermal expansion coefficient like that of enamel and dentin, and acceptable aesthetics. Their high solubility and poor mechanical qualities are among their limitations. E-glass fibers are generally utilized to reinforce the polymer matrix and are identified by their higher silica content. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of adding (10 wt% and 20 wt%) silane-treated E-glass fibers to traditional GIC on its mechanical properties (compressive strength, flexural strength, and surface hardness) and solubility. METHODS: The characterization of the E-glass fiber fillers was achieved by XRF, SEM, and PSD. The specimens were prepared by adding the E-glass fiber fillers to the traditional GIC at 10% and 20% by weight, forming two innovative groups, and compared with the unmodified GIC (control group). The physical properties (film thickness and initial setting time) were examined to confirm operability after mixing. The evaluation of the reinforced GIC was performed by assessing the compressive strength, flexural strength, hardness, and solubility (n = 10 specimens per test). A one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests were performed for statistical analysis (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS: The traditional GIC showed the least compressive strength, flexural strength, hardness, and highest solubility. While the GIC reinforced with 20 wt% E-glass fibers showed the highest compressive strength, flexural strength, hardness, and least solubility. Meanwhile, GIC reinforced with 10 wt% showed intermediate results (P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION: Using 20 wt% E-glass fiber as a filler with the traditional GIC provides a strengthening effect and reduced solubility.
