Registered nurses' perspectives on medically safe practices and sound ethical standards in aesthetic nursing: An interview study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the views of registered nurses experienced in aesthetic nursing regarding medically safe practices and sound ethical standards. BACKGROUND: Aesthetic nursing is an emerging field of modern-day healthcare encompassed within aesthetic medicine. There is a distinct lack of research regarding how registered nurses who specialise in this area of care view medically safe practices and sound ethical standards. This is important to explore, because, in the absence of mandatory regulations within the sector, and it is the aesthetic nurse's own obligation to uphold professional, medical and ethical standards. DESIGN: Qualitative study. METHODS: Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 registered nurses who had worked in aesthetic nursing for at least two years. The interview transcripts were categorised using qualitative content analysis. The COREQ checklist was used to report the study. RESULTS: A main theme was generated during the analysis: Considering my professional, the clinic's and the patient's needs. The participants described that they considered medical and ethical aspects pertinent to their professional roles as registered nurses but also undertook practices in addition to what they already did as registered nurses, such as creating professional networks using social media. They also described the importance of establishing local medical and ethical guidelines for their clinics, and that they considered patients' individual needs such as using individual information relating to their patients' previous experiences. CONCLUSIONS: The study points to the positive tendencies of registered nurses in aesthetics to develop their own professional networks and create local medical and ethical guidelines until more robust mandatory regulations are in place. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Considering that aesthetic nursing is a young industry, registered nurses are in an excellent position to utilise their professional networks and work with professional bodies to develop standards of professional nursing practice and education for this field.

Medical Aesthetics Training: Shifting to Collective Competence.

With increased demands for medical aesthetics procedures and the sudden profusion of newly licensed, and unlicensed, providers who are performing these medical aesthetics procedures also comes the responsibility to shift to collective competence. Collective competence refers to what occurs among professionals in action, emphasizing the sharing of experiences, knowledge, and perceptions among those who are providing services to the medical aesthetics client. Registered nurses and medical students are not taught to perform cosmetic procedures in basic nursing or medical programs and thus require a post-entry-level education to validate their competency. The current medical aesthetics apprenticeship training approach of see one, do one, and teach one focuses on teaching technical skills and thus does not sufficiently address the ever-changing health care context and the ambiguity in practitioner role. Recent scholars highlight that when health care failed or an error has been identified, it is rarely adduced to an individual's competence but rather is more likely to be a failure of the collective team. In this article, we are advocating for a change in how medical aesthetics practitioners are trained. In particular, it advocates creating opportunities within the curricula to train practitioners as a collective body, as opposed to providing training that focuses on the individual's competence and technical skills alone.

Nurses' experiences of leech therapy in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The aim of this study was to explore nurses' experience of using leech therapy. Leech therapy is useful in promoting revascularisation of skin grafts. Nurse disquiet in their role as leech therapists has been noted. This study explored the experience of Irish nurses. A qualitative design with an interview schedule was used to learn about emotional and practical clinical experiences. Interviews were carried out with seven nurses working with leeches in reconstructive surgery in 2013. These interviews were coded and explored for themes. Results revealed that many nurses feel aversion to the use of leeches. This may be associated with the use of a parasitic organism as treatment in conflict with the nurse's role in cross infection. It was also found that management of a nurse's own and patient's emotional responses is required. In conclusion, preparation for the role of leech therapy beyond the purely practical is necessary, and should explore affective responses of the practitioner and patients.

This paper considers the recent controversies around the regulation of cosmetic surgery procedures. The author suggests that any review considering reform of the law in this area should not only look at issues concerning the safety of the procedures and competence of the practitioners, but should also address the question of which procedures should be allowed. Not what I expected: informational needs of women undergoing breast surgery.

In 2008, approximately 500,000 women in the United States underwent breast surgery, either cosmetic surgery or reconstruction following mastectomy for breast cancer. There is a growing body of literature on women's motivations to have these types of surgical procedures and on satisfaction with the aesthetic outcomes, but little is known about the information needs and expectations of women who choose to undergo these procedures. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to gain a better understanding of the informational needs of women who underwent breast augmentation, breast reduction, or breast reconstruction following breast cancer surgery.
