Definitive diagnosis of histoplasmosis relies on culture and/or cytology/histopathology; however, these procedures have limited sensitivity and cultures are time-consuming. Antibodies detection by immunodiffusion has low sensitivity in immunocompromised individuals and uses histoplasmin (HMN), a crude antigenic extract, as reagent. Novel protein antigen candidates have been recently identified and produced by DNA-recombinant techniques to obtain standardized and specific reagents for diagnosing histoplasmosis. To compare the analytical performance of novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for antibodies testing for diagnosing histoplasmosis using different Histoplasma capsulatum antigens as reagents. The H. capsulatum 100 kDa protein (Hcp100), the M antigen and its immunoreactive fragment F1 were produced by DNA-recombinant techniques. Galactomannan was purified from both the yeast and mycelial cell walls (yGM and mGM, respectively). The analytical performance of the ELISA tests for the serological detection of antibodies against these antigens was evaluated and compared with those obtained using HMN as reagent. Antibodies detection by the Hcp100 ELISA demonstrated 90.0% sensitivity and 92.0% specificity, versus 43.3% sensitivity and 95.0% specificity of the M ELISA, 33.3% sensitivity and 84.0% specificity of the F1 ELISA, 96.7% sensitivity and 94.0% specificity of the yGM ELISA, 83.3% sensitivity and 88.0% specificity of the mGM ELISA, and 70.0% sensitivity and 86.0% specificity for the HMN ELISA. In summary, Hcp100 is proposed as the most promising candidate for the serodiagnosis of histoplasmosis. The primary immunoreactive element in HMN proved to be GM rather than the M antigen. Nevertheless, a higher incidence of cross-reactions was noted with GM compared to M.

Epizootic lymphangitis (EL) is a highly prevalent and contagious infectious disease affecting horses in many parts of Ethiopia caused by Histoplasma capsulatum sensu lato ('var. farciminosum'). In this study, 12 suspected isolates of H. capsulatum sensu lato or yeasts unidentified by conventional biochemical tests isolated from Ethiopian horses with EL were characterised by internal transcribed spacer sequencing. Six of the 12 isolates were identified to be members of H. capsulatum sensu lato and the other six were Pichia kudriavzevii (synonym: Candida krusei) (n = 3), Trichosporon asahii (n = 1), Geotrichum silvicola (n = 1) and Moesziomyces aphidis (n = 1), respectively. The six H. capsulatum sensu lato isolates were further characterised by multilocus sequence analysis. Four distinct gene loci (arf [462 bases], H-anti [410 bases], ole1 [338 bases] and tub1 [272 bases]) of these six isolates as well as those of two H. capsulatum sensu lato ('var. farciminosum') reference strains (ATCC 58332 and ATCC 28798) were polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified and sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses of their concatenated nucleotide sequences showed that three of the isolates and the reference strain ATCC 58332 were identical and belonged to the Eurasia clade within Latin American (LAm) A (H. suramericanum), and those of the other three isolates and the reference strain ATCC 28798 were identical and belonged to the Africa clade. At least two distinct phylogenetic clades of H. capsulatum sensu lato were circulating in Ethiopian horses with EL. Advanced molecular technologies and bioinformatics tools are crucial for the accurate identification and typing of pathogens as well as the discovery of novel microorganisms in veterinary microbiology.
Using multilocus sequence analysis with four concatenated housekeeping gene loci, at least two distinct phylogenetic clades, namely Eurasia clade and Africa clade, of Histoplasma capsulatum sensu lato were confirmed to be circulating in Ethiopian horses with epizootic lymphangitis.

In Ghana, most laboratory diagnoses of severe mycoses are based on histopathology findings due to inadequate availability of serology, culture, and molecular tests. The aim of this study was to evaluate the spectrum of mycoses diagnosed in Ghana. We retrospectively reviewed reports from 2012 to 2021 from three major pathology laboratories in Ghana to identify reports indicating the presence of fungal elements and diagnosis of a mycosis, then extracted demographic, clinical history, site of infection, stain(s), used and diagnosed mycosis details. Over the 10-year period, 107 cases were found. No apparent increasing and decreasing trend in the number of cases per year or in a period was observed. The age range of affected patients was from 4 to 86 years. Special stains for fungi were only used in 22 of 107 (20.6%) of cases. The most frequently affected site was the sino-nasal area (34%). Mycosis type was determined for 58 (54.2%) cases, comprising aspergillosis (21), candidiasis (14), dermatophytosis (6), mucormycosis (3), two cases each of chromoblastomycosis, histoplasmosis, eumycetoma, entomophthoromycosis, sporotrichosis, and Malassezia infection and a single case each of cryptococcosis and deep onychomycosis. Of the 53 (49.5%) cases with presumptive diagnosis data, only seven (13.2%) had a pre-biopsy suspicion of mycosis. There is a wide spectrum of mycoses in Ghana, including endemic mycoses not previously reported. Improving the use of special fungal stains could increase yield and mycoses identification. Laboratory diagnostic capacity needs enhancement to complement histopathology investigations with serology, culture, and molecular methods.
In Ghana, diagnosis of mycoses is mainly based on histopathology findings. To appreciate the varied mycoses diagnosed, we reviewed the reports of major laboratories from 2012 to 2021 and found 107 cases including endemic, rare, and previously unreported cases with fungal stains unusually used.

The mycosis histoplasmosis is also considered a zoonosis that affects humans and other mammalian species worldwide. Among the wild mammals predisposed to be infected with the etiologic agent of histoplasmosis, bats are relevant because they are reservoir of Histoplasma species, and they play a fundamental role in maintaining and spreading fungal propagules in the environments since the infective mycelial phase of Histoplasma grows in their accumulated guano. In this study, we detected the fungal presence in organ samples of bats randomly captured in urban areas of Araraquara City, São Paulo, Brazil. Fungal detection was performed using a nested polymerase chain reaction to amplify a molecular marker (Hcp100) unique to H. capsulatum, which revealed the pathogen presence in organ samples from 15 out of 37 captured bats, indicating 40.5% of infection. Out of 22 Hcp100-amplicons generated, 41% corresponded to lung and trachea samples and 59% to spleen, liver, and kidney samples. Data from these last three organs suggest that bats develop disseminated infections. Considering that infected bats create environments with a high risk of infection, it is important to register the percentage of infected bats living in urban areas to avoid risks of infection to humans, domestic animals, and wildlife.

BACKGROUND: Epizootic lymphangitis is an infectious and chronically debilitating disease of the equines. Histoplasma capsulatum var. farciminosum, a thermally dimorphic fungi, is the causative agent for the disease. In Ethiopia, the disease significantly affects carthorses, posing threats to animal welfare, and resulting in substantial economic losses. Limited availability of widely accessible antifungals in addition to the chronic nature of the disease is the major challenge against management of epizootic lymphangitis. This study aimed to assess the in vitro efficacy of specific local medicinal plant extracts against the mycelial phase development of H. capsulatum var. farciminosum in southern Ethiopia. The leaves of Xanthium strumarium, Kanda (Family Rubiaceae), Croton macrostachyus (Bisana in Amharic), and Centella Asiatica (Echere waye as a local name in Zeyissegna) that are traditionally used for the treatment of different skin ailments were collected and extracted for the in vitro trial. RESULTS: The study revealed that methanol extracts of Xanthium strumarium, Kanda, Croton macrostachyus, and Centella Asiatica, at minimum inhibitory concentrations of 1.25 mg/ml, 2.5 mg/ml, 2.5 mg/ml, and 5 mg/ml, respectively, inhibited the growth of H. capsulatum var. farciminosum. CONCLUSION: This in vitro finding could serve as significant preliminary data in the exploration of effective alternative treatment options for epizootic lymphangitis. This study provides a crucial foundation for further research aimed at determining the chemical components and in vivo effectiveness of these plant extracts against both the mycelial and yeast forms of Histoplasma capsulatum var. farciminosum.

Epizootic equine lymphangitis (EEL) is a chronic fungal disease that affects equids. The causative agent is a dimorphic fungus called Histoplasma capsulatum var farciminosum. Histoplasmacapsulatum var farciminosum field strain 7 (D 2878/2023) isolated from the eye socket of an EEL Ethiopian horse was sub-cultured on four different solid media and incubated at 26°C and 37°C for 6 weeks. Details of growth morphology were recorded and shown in images during 6 weeks of incubation. Histoplasmacapsulatum var farciminosum grew best at 26°C on all four agars, but only on sheep blood agar at 37°C as small, white dry colonies.
Histoplasma capsulatum var farciminosum was isolated from the eye socket of an equine epizootic lymphangitis infected Ethiopian horse on Mycosel agar, which was sub-cultured on four different solid media at two different temperatures for 6 weeks to show its growth pattern.

Histoplasma species infect humans and animals, notably bats. Histoplasma species are thermally dimorphic fungi existing in mycelial form in the natural environment and in yeast form in infected tissues. In this narrative literature review, we summarize the occurrence of Histoplasma spp. in different species of bat tissues (n = 49) and in soil admixed with bat guano where the species of bat dwelling nearby has been identified (an additional 18 species likely infected) to provide an up-to-date summary of data. Most positive isolations are from the Americas and Caribbean, with some studies from Thailand, Malaysia, Nigeria, Slovenia, France, and Australia. We also summarize some of the early experimental work to elucidate pathogenicity, latency, immune response, and faecal excretion in bats. Given the recent recognition of the global extent of histoplasmosis, thermal dimorphism in Histoplasma spp., and global heating, additional work on understanding the complex relationship between Histoplasma and bats is desirable.
The fungal genus Histoplasma causes lung, disseminated, gut and adrenal disease in humans, many with AIDS, but also people with normally functioning immune systems. Exposure and outbreaks are often linked to visiting caves where bats reside. In some locations, considerable quantities of Histoplasma fungus are found in bat guano and, when airborne, can cause infection. There are over 1400 species of bat worldwide. We reviewed the literature from 1962, the first recorded description of bat infection by Histoplasma, and found 49 different species of bat recorded as being infected. Most of the data are from the Americas, very little from Africa, and some from hyperendemic areas in SE Asia. Histoplasma are temperature sensitive fungi and bats, especially those which hibernate and use torpor to survive winter-time shortages of insect prey, occupy environments with a wide range of temperatures. Our understanding of bat infection or latency, in a world with extremes of weather and general heating, is likely to change the Histoplasma/bat relationship in uncertain ways.

Histoplasmosis, the most common endemic mycosis in North America, presents in a myriad of ways, spanning the spectrum from self-limiting pneumonia to progressive disseminated histoplasmosis (PDH). Toward better describing contemporary histoplasmosis syndromes, risks, and outcomes, this single-center retrospective cohort study was performed (2009-2019). The population who developed PDH was similar to that with other forms of histoplasmosis (OFH) except for higher rates of preexisting immunocompromising conditions (91.3% vs. 40%, P < .001) and a trend toward receiving more chronic immunosuppression (65.2% vs. 33.3%, P = .054) compared to those with OFH. Diagnosis was most frequently achieved by urinary or serum antigen positivity. People with PDH more frequently tested positive compared to those with OFH, but negative tests did not rule out histoplasmosis. Median time to diagnosis was prolonged among people with both PDH and OFH (32 vs. 31 days, respectively). Following diagnosis, people with PDH received more liposomal amphotericin (78.3% vs. 20%, P < .001). Subsequent survival at 90 and 365 days and treatment response were similar in both groups. Patients with PDH were more often hospitalized (95.7% vs. 60%, P = .006); however, once admitted, there were no differences in hospital length of stay or intensive care unit admission rate. The challenges of diagnosing histoplasmosis based on clinical presentation alone highlight the need for heightened awareness of these entities especially given the recent reports on expanded endemicity and delays in diagnosis.
Histoplasmosis is the most common endemic mycosis in North America. This article summarizes the clinical features, risk factors, and outcomes in patients who developed disseminated disease compared to more localized forms of histoplasmosis.

Patients with severe COVID-19 are at increased risk for invasive fungal infections, which are underestimated. Histoplasmosis reactivation in endemic areas should not be overlooked in this population. In a previous study, seroconversion to anti-histoplasmin antibodies by ELISA was detected in 6/39 (15.4%) patients with severe COVID-19. In this work, samples were further investigated to detect seroconversion to antibodies against the Histoplasma capsulatum 100-kDa antigen (Hcp100) by ELISA. Seroconversion to anti-Hcp100 antibodies was detected in 7/39 patients, of whom 6 also seroconverted anti-histoplasmin antibodies. These results reinforce previous findings that show histoplasmosis as an underdiagnosed fungal entity complicating COVID-19.
This study verifies that patients with severe COVID-19 at intensive care units are at risk for histoplasmosis reactivation in endemic areas. Accurate diagnosis of this deadly fungal disease among critically ill patients with COVID-19 living in endemic areas for histoplasmosis is needed.

We detected Histoplasma capsulatum in soil and penguin excreta in the Antarctic Peninsula by sequencing after performing species-specific PCR, confirming previous observations that this pathogen occurs more broadly than suspected. This finding highlights the need for surveillance of emerging agents of systemic mycoses and their transmission among regions, animals, and humans in Antarctica.

Histoplasmosis is a mycotic infection principally affecting pulmonary tissue; sometimes, histoplasmosis can progress into a systemic disease. This infection involves immunocompetent and immunosuppressed human and other mammalian hosts, depending on particular circumstances. Histoplasmosis infection has been documented worldwide. The infection is acquired by inhaling infective mycelial propagules of the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. New reports of clinical cases of histoplasmosis in extreme latitudes could be related to human social adaptations and climate changes in the world, which are creating new favorable environments for this fungus and for bats, its major natural reservoirs and dispersers. Histoplasma has been isolated from most continents, and it is considered a complex of cryptic species, consisting of various groups of isolates that differ genetically and correlate with a particular geographic distribution. Based on updated studies, Histoplasma taxonomy is adjusting to new genetic data. Here, we have suggested that Histoplasma has at least 14 phylogenetic species distributed worldwide and new genotypes that could be under deliberation. Histoplasma's geographic radiation began in South America millions of years ago when the continents were joined and the climate was favorable. For fungal spreading, the role of bats and some birds is crucial, although other natural factors could also participate.

BACKGROUND: Histoplasma (H.) capsulatum is a dimorphic fungus, and infection is typically via inhalation of microconidia. After conversion to the yeast phase within the lung, the organism is subsequently disseminated to other tissues by macrophages. Nasal histoplasmosis appears to be a rare condition in dogs. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the clinical case of a 4.5-year-old male neutered Cocker spaniel/Poodle mix, 7.7 kg, body condition score 6/9, that presented with a 3-month history of sneezing and left-sided mucoid nasal discharge. The history also included a mild swelling (transient) of the right carpus with a lameness (grade II-III/IV), coinciding with the onset of sneezing and nasal discharge. The dog lived primarily indoors in the Texas Gulf Coast area. On physical examination, the dog was febrile, and the left nostril was swollen, ulcerative, deformed, and hypopigmented. Mandibular lymph nodes were firm and mildly enlarged bilaterally. Mild lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, and hyperglobulinemia were noted. Thoracic radiographs were unremarkable. Computed tomography and rhinoscopy revealed swelling of the rostral portion of the left and right nasal passages. Cytology and histology of biopsies of the affected nasal tissue showed pyogranulomatous inflammation and yeast organisms consistent with H. capsulatum. Weak antigenuria was detected on the MVista H. capsulatum antigen test. Treatment with oral itraconazole led to a resolution of the nasal signs and normalization of the appearance of the nostril over 13 weeks, and neither antigenuria nor antigenemia was detected on several recheck examinations. The dog remained in good general and physical condition and showed no signs of disease recurrence more than 6 years after the last examination. CONCLUSION: We report a rare case of nasal mucocutaneous histoplasmosis in an immunocompetent dog, with an excellent clinical response to oral itraconazole. This case documents that histoplasmosis in dogs can affect primarily the nasal cavity, which responds rapidly to triazole antifungal therapy and has a good prognosis. A similar case has only been reported in human medicine in a young adult.

Histoplasmosis, a mycotic infection caused by Histoplasma spp, can infect the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. Clinical signs of gastrointestinal histoplasmosis can include diarrhea, profound weight loss, anorexia, and vomiting. Rectal scrape for cytology can provide a quick diagnosis, but if negative abdominal ultrasound is often pursued. Ultrasonographic abnormalities in dogs with gastrointestinal histoplasmosis have rarely been reported. This retrospective, single-center case series aimed to describe the ultrasonographic features of gastrointestinal histoplasmosis in dogs. Nineteen cases with a diagnosis of gastrointestinal histoplasmosis confirmed with gastrointestinal cytology or histopathology (N = 15) or gastrointestinal lymph node cytology (N = 4) that had undergone an abdominal ultrasound examination from 2005 to 2020 were included. Ultrasound images were reviewed by an American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR)-certified veterinary radiologist and diagnostic imaging resident. Eighteen cases had sonographic abnormalities within the gastrointestinal tract. The colon was the most affected organ. Colonic thickening and abnormal wall layering were the most frequent findings (N = 16 dogs); thickening ranged from 0.36 to 1.2 cm. Diffuse, multifocal, and focal thickening patterns were seen. Sixteen patients had abnormal wall layering of the colon (complete loss of layering or altered with partial loss of layering). Other frequent findings included lymphadenopathy, small intestinal thickening with abnormal wall layering and peritoneal effusion. Based on the authors' review of the literature, this is the first description of ultrasonographic findings of gastrointestinal histoplasmosis in a group of dogs. Although abnormal gastrointestinal wall layering seen sonographically is most frequently associated with neoplasia, this is not pathognomonic. Gastrointestinal histoplasmosis should be considered as a differential diagnosis due to the similarities and overlap of ultrasonographic features.

Gingival lesions as the sole manifestation of African histoplasmosis (Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii) have never been reported in baboons. Grossly, lesions can be indistinguishable from bacterial ulcerative gingivitis or gingival hyperplasia. Clinical outcomes of primary gingival histoplasmosis in baboons are unknown and may complicate colony management decisions.

BACKGROUND: Epizootic lymphangitis (EL), caused by Histoplasma capsulatum variety farciminosum (HCF) is a contagious, chronic disease of equines, characterized by development of nodular lesions in the lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels and skin. It is one of the most important diseases of equines in Ethiopia, causing significant economic loss, particularly in the livelihood of carthorse owners. To date there is neither effective diagnostic nor control measure implemented in the country. Furthermore, there is a shortage of data on the epidemiology of the disease in different regions of this country. The aim of this study was to investigate epidemiology of EL in northern Ethiopia, using the conventional methods as well as nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS: The presence of HCF genetic material was confirmed in 44% (84/191) of the carthorses. Subclinical infection was observed in 18.2% (22/121) of the apparently healthy carthorses. Considering the nested PCR as a gold standard, sensitivity and specificity of clinical examination were 74% and 92.5%, respectively, while the area under the ROC curve (AUR) was 0.83 (95% confidence interval, 0.77, 0.896). Moreover, a moderate (k = 0.675) agreement observed between the nested PCR and clinical examination. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated widespread occurrence of EL in northern Ethiopia, and the advantage of the nested PCR in detecting infection of HCF, even before the clinical symptoms became apparent.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of disseminated histoplasmosis with conjunctival and/or nictitating membrane involvement in cats. PROCEDURE: Medical records from seven cats with naturally acquired disseminated histoplasmosis and conjunctival and/or nictitating membrane lesions were reviewed for signalment, clinical findings, diagnostic results, treatment, and outcome. RESULTS: Breeds included domestic shorthair (n = 5), Maine Coon (n = 1), and Siamese mix (n = 1) with four spayed females and three castrated males. Conjunctival abnormalities were identified in four cats, and nictitating membrane lesions were identified in four cats; one cat had both a conjunctival and nictitating membrane lesion. Cytologic evaluation of lesions identified Histoplasma capsulatum organisms in two of four cases sampled, and histopathologic evaluation identified H capsulatum in both cases in which a sample was submitted. Histoplasmosis antigen testing was positive in three of four submitted samples. Initial treatment for all cats included fluconazole (median dose: 26 mg/kg/d). Median duration of follow-up was 11 months (range: 1-108 months; n = 4). Resolution of ocular adnexal lesions was achieved in three cats. Two cats had relapse of disease, one of which was subsequently euthanized. One cat with concurrent feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection died one month after diagnosis of histoplasmosis. CONCLUSIONS: Histoplasmosis should be a differential diagnosis for ocular adnexal inflammatory lesions in cats.

Histoplasmosis is considered the most common invasive opportunistic fungal disease in the Americas, with outbreaks and micro-epidemics reported for over 80 years. In Brazil, this disease has been described since 1946, reaching a remarkable incidence in the population, especially during the HIV-AIDS pandemic. In this study, published and unpublished outbreaks and micro-epidemics of histoplasmosis in Brazil were revisited by accessing different database sources and evaluating epidemiological and clinical features. We have found reports spanning 1946-2017, across 10 Brazilian states and with involvement of 370 humans and 2 dogs, and 13 disseminated cases and 3 deaths were reported. Rio de Janeiro had the largest number of outbreaks (n = 20/40; 50%) reported in this study. The majority of outbreaks and micro-epidemics was reported in caves (n = 21/40; 52.5%), followed by reports in abandoned/deactivated sites (n = 6/40; 15%), mines (n = 5/40; 12.5%), chicken coops (n = 4/40; 10%). Histoplasmosis is a serious health issue in Brazil considering the attractive and growing market of ecotourism throughout more than 7000 caves, and all levels of poultry farming activity are important to raise awareness about how dangerous this neglected disease can be and establish ways to decrease exposure to contaminated environmental sources through adequate preventive measures.

One adult leopard (Panthera pardus) and five adult tigers (Panthera tigris) presented with a range of nonspecific clinical signs, including lethargy (6/6), mobility deficits (4/6), and hyporexia (3/6). Hematology and biochemistry revealed a hyperproteinemia characterized by hyperglobulinemia (4/6), hepatocellular enzyme activity increases (3/6), azotemia (3/6), leukocytosis (2/6), hyperbilirubinemia (2/6), or a combination of conditions. Further diagnostics and management varied with the presenting signs and clinicopathological findings, including supportive care, diagnostic imaging, and blastomyces urine antigen analyses. Two animals died, and four were euthanatized. Postmortem findings included granulomatous pneumonia (6/6), fibrinous pleural effusion (3/ 6), pericardial effusion (2/6), and diffuse icterus (1/6). Histopathology revealed round to oval structures with a thin clear wall and purple inclusions within cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system, consistent with Histoplasma capsulatum, in each animal. Disseminated histoplasmosis was found in five cases, with organisms present in the lung (5/5), liver (3/5), lymph nodes (3/5), spleen (2/5), bone marrow (2/5), thyroid (1/5), tongue (1/ 5), kidney (1/5), or a combination of organs. One tiger was found to have pulmonary histoplasmosis without evidence of disseminated infection. On the basis of clinical and pathological findings, histoplasmosis was diagnosed. This case series illustrates the difficulties in antemortem diagnosis of histoplasmosis on the basis of complete blood count, serum biochemistry profile, and antigen testing and underscores that histoplasmosis should be considered a differential diagnosis in any felid presenting with nonspecific clinical signs in endemic areas.

Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii (Hcd) infections have been well documented to cause chronic granulomatous disease, mainly involving the skin of baboons and humans in African countries primarily. This retrospective study classified the subspecies of Histoplasma and developed a phylogenetic tree utilizing DNA sequences extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissues from 9 baboons from a research colony in Texas histologically diagnosed with Hcd. Based on sequence analysis of ITS-2, Tub-1, and ARF, Hcd isolated from the archived samples closely aligns with the African clade and has 88% sequence homology with a sample isolated from an individual in Senegal.

Bats are considered to play a significant role in the epidemiology of histoplasmosis, worldwide. We investigated the occurrence of H. capsulatum in lung samples from 89 bats, from urban areas in Southeastern Brazil, using nested PCR based on ribosomal DNA. Fungal DNA was detected in 31/89 samples (34.8%), of which 13/31 were Molossids (41.9%), 4/31 Eumops spp. (12.9%), 2/31 Artibeus lituratus (6.5%), and 12/31 others (38.7%). This is the first report of natural infection by H. capsulatum in A. lituratus in Southeastern Brazil, which reinforces the importance of these synanthropic animals in the epidemiology of histoplasmosis in urban areas.
