RESUMO

Plant-derived compounds are renowned for their remarkable pharmacological properties, holding immense promise for therapeutic interventions in human health. In this study, we aimed to assess the antimicrobial, anti-hemolytic, antioxidant, and wound healing attributes of watercress oil incorporated into Vaseline gel (OLG) compared to watercress oil alone. OLG was formulated through a meticulous process involving the addition of Vaseline gel to the oil under agitation conditions. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis of watercress oil unveiled a rich array of phenolic compounds, including gallic acid (10.18 µg/mL), daidzein (3.46 µg/mL), and hesperetin (3.28 µg/mL). The inhibitory zones caused by watercress oil alone against a spectrum of pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, and Candida albicans, were measured at 25 ± 0.3, 26 ± 0.1, 22 ± 0.2, 25 ± 0.2, and 24 ± 0.1 mm, respectively. Notably, OLG exhibited slightly larger zones of inhibition (27 ± 0.2, 30 ± 0.2, 24 ± 0.1, 28 ± 0.1, and 25 ± 0.3 mm) against the same microbial strains. Furthermore, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of OLG against E. coli and E. faecalis was lower compared to watercress oil alone, indicating enhanced efficacy. Similarly, the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of OLG was notably lower across all tested bacteria compared to watercress oil alone. Inhibition of bacterial hemolysis, particularly K. pneumoniae, was significantly enhanced with OLG treatment, showcasing reductions of 19.4%, 11.6%, and 6.8% at 25%, 50%, and 75% MIC concentrations, respectively, compared to watercress oil alone. The antioxidant activity of both oil and OLG was quantified with IC50 values of 2.56 and 3.02 µg/mL, respectively. Moreover, OLG demonstrated remarkable efficacy in wound healing assays, with notable enhancements in migration rate, wound closure, and area difference compared to control cells. In light of the observed antibacterial, antifungal, anti-hemolytic, and wound healing properties of OLG, this formulation holds therapeutic potential in treating microbial infections and promoting wound healing.

RESUMO

Psychological entitlement has appeared as a significant topic for research in the field of management and Psychology. From the perspective of social comparison theory, the present study aimed to investigate the impact of psychological entitlement on engagement in learning activities and psychological anxiety in the hotel industry. Furthermore, benign and malign envy were examined as an explanatory mechanism between psychological entitlement and its outcomes. Based on a three-wave time-lagged design, data were obtained from 242 employees working in the different hotels in Pakistan. We found that psychological entitlement's has no direct influence on hotel employees engagement in learning activities, and psychological anxiety. In addition, the indirect effect of psychological entitlement on both outcomes (engagement in learning activities and psychological anxiety) was found significant through the mediating effect of benign and malign envy. The implications for research theory and practice are discussed.

RESUMO

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the aetiology, management and outcomes of convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) in children and highlight the factors influencing patient outcomes in such cases. Methods: In a retrospective study spanning the 2020-2023 period, 93 children with CSE treated at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital's emergency department (ED), high dependency unit (HDU) and intensive care unit (ICU) were analysed. The Modified Rankin Scale at discharge was used to determine CSE outcomes. Results: Among the 93 children studied (mean age 4.84 ± 3.64 years), predominantly Omani (92.47%), 14 aetiologies were noted. Of them, acute symptomatic (37.7%) and febrile status (31.2%) were the primary causes of CSE. Diazepam was administered as the first-line treatment in 58 (67.44%) cases, with a median seizure duration of 45 minutes. Successful seizure control was achieved in 71 (76.34%) cases within 60 minutes. A return to baseline was observed in 55.9% of cases, while mortality and disability were noted in 5.38% and 38.7% of cases, respectively. For 17 cases, aetiology and duration significantly impacted patient outcomes (P <0.05). Conclusion: Acute symptomatic status is the most common aetiology of CSE. A longer duration of CSE is associated with higher mortality and neurological disability. Prompt and appropriate management of CSE is essential. Furthermore, identifying and treating the underlying cause of CSE is a crucial step in reducing its duration and improving patient outcomes.

RESUMO

Displaced femoral neck fractures are prevalent in the elderly, necessitating surgical intervention to restore function and mobility. Hemiarthroplasty, available in both cemented and cementless forms, is a common treatment. While cemented hemiarthroplasty is traditionally preferred, cementless options are gaining attention for their potential advantages, including reduced operative time, decreased blood loss, and preservation of bone stock for future revisions. This case report details the successful application of cementless hemiarthroplasty in a 93-year-old female with a displaced femoral neck fracture, underscoring its feasibility and potential benefits in the very elderly. The patient, with multiple comorbidities including hypertension, cerebrovascular accident, osteoarthritis, dementia, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, and limited mobility, presented with left hip pain following a fall. Radiographs confirmed a displaced femoral neck fracture. Cementless hemiarthroplasty was performed using the lateral Harding approach, achieving stable fixation without cement. Postoperative care involves standard pain management, early mobilization, and monitoring for complications. This case highlights the potential benefits of cementless hemiarthroplasty, such as reduced operative time and decreased risk of cement-related complications, particularly in elderly patients with good bone quality. The successful outcome, characterized by stable fixation and absence of intraoperative or early postoperative complications, emphasizes the importance of individualized patient assessment and tailored surgical approaches. Further research is needed to refine guidelines and expand the evidence base for the use of cementless techniques in this demographic.

RESUMO

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), such as alkanethiols (AT), are widely used as functional coatings or interfaces between different materials. There is an assumption that the arrangement and alignment of the hydrocarbon chains in films made from carboxyl-terminated alkanethiols are similar to those made from alkanethiols. Here, the structure of the outermost layer and near-surface region of SAMs formed from carboxyl-terminated alkanethiols of various lengths has been analyzed. The chemical composition of the samples was measured using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and angle-resolved XPS (AR-XPS), allowing the film thickness. Metastable induced photoelectron spectroscopy (MIES) as a surface analytical tool sensitive only for the outermost layer in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided insights into the composition of the topmost layer, showing that it consists mainly of the backbone of the SAM-forming molecules. Through combining AR-XPS concentration depth profiles and the measurement of the composition of the outermost layer, it can be shown that SAMs tend to favor a gauche orientation, enabling interactions between the functional groups.

RESUMO

Postmenopausal women are overrepresented in the preserved ejection heart failure population. Expansion of visceral and epicardial adipose tissue during the menopause transition leads to local and low-grade systemic inflammation that in turn contributes to left ventricular concentric remodeling, diastolic dysfunction and the development and progression of preserved ejection fraction. In contrast to visceral adipose tissue imaging, epicardial adipose tissue can be inexpensively imaged on low radiation coronary calcium score computerized tomography examination. The menopause transition provides a unique time frame to evaluate the contribution of epicardial adipose tissue expansion to the pathogenesis of preserved ejection heart failure.

RESUMO

The research aimed to evaluate how effective hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicates (HSCASs) and discarded date pits (DDPs) are as dietary adsorbents for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in enhancing the performance and health of broiler chickens aged 16 to 30 days. A total of 240 Ross 308 straight-run broilers were randomly allocated into four dietary groups, each with 10 replicates: a control diet, a control diet with 1000 ppb AFB1, an AFB1-contaminated diet with 0.5% HSCAS, and an AFB1-contaminated diet with 4% DDP. Incorporating HSCASs or DDPs into the AFB1-contaminated diet resulted in significant improvements across various parameters, involving increased body weight, improved feed conversion ratio, higher dressing percentage, decreased relative weights of kidney and spleen, elevated serum levels of total protein, globulin, and glucose, reduced serum alanine aminotransferase activity, and heightened hepatic protein concentration and glutathione peroxidase activity, along with diminished hepatic malondialdehyde content and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase activity. Moreover, both supplements led to increased ileal villus height and surface area, enhanced apparent nitrogen-corrected metabolizable energy digestibility, and decreased AFB1 residues in the liver and kidney. Moreover, the dietary inclusion of DDPs significantly decreased relative liver weight, raised serum albumin concentration, lowered serum alkaline phosphatase activity, enhanced hepatic total antioxidant capacity level, and augmented ileal villus width. Conversely, the dietary addition of HSCASs significantly heightened apparent crude protein digestibility. In conclusion, the inclusion of HSCASs and DDPs in AFB1-contaminated diets can mitigate the toxic effects of AFB1 on broiler chickens, with DDPs exhibiting additional advantages in optimizing liver function and gut morphology.

RESUMO

Exploring and implementing competency-based education approaches to assess research skills are necessary to close the gap between research and practice, promote lifelong learning among future nurses, and improve research literacy. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of competency-based education in improving the assessment of research skills among nursing students. A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes and Study (PICOS) eligibility criteria were used to select original studies published between 2017 and 2023. As a first step in the data-handling process, titles and abstracts of all articles retrieved by the search strategy were screened for relevance, and the irrelevant articles were discarded. The screening process was conducted by two authors independently, and the final decisions were made together. A meta-analysis was performed to assess the effectiveness of competency-based education in improving the assessment of research skills among nursing students. Five quantitative studies were appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. The effect size was 0.69 ± 0.35 (P = 0.05), which indicates a high effect on research competency among nursing students who attend courses or training in research matters, after transforming data to correlation coefficient resulting in r = 0.5. The study encourages research literacy among nursing students. Through competency-based learning, students are exposed to a variety of research methodologies, ethical issues, and scientific writing conventions. This exposure enhances their capacity to understand, assess, and apply research evidence, empowering them to become knowledgeable consumers and field contributors. While making evidence-based decisions, nurses with research competencies can actively incorporate the most recent research findings into their clinical practice. Furthermore, nurses with strong research abilities can influence health policy and practice.

RESUMO

Introduction: In-situ right atrial (RA) thrombus is a rare occurrence typically associated with heightened inflammatory or hypercoagulable states. Here, we present a case of in-situ RA thrombus mimicking atrial myxoma in a patient with sepsis and bacteraemia. Case description: A 41-year-old man presented with septic arthritis and bacteraemia caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A transoesophageal echocardiogram revealed a large pediculated mass resembling atrial myxoma, which was not visible on transthoracic echocardiography performed four days earlier. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging strongly suggested a thrombus, leading to the patient undergoing transcatheter aspiration. Subsequent pathology confirmed an organised fibrin thrombus without evidence of infection. Discussion: The patient's in-situ RA thrombus likely developed in response to a heightened inflammatory state associated with sepsis. Limited data exist on in-situ RA thrombi in the absence of atrial fibrillation, though some reports suggest a correlation between heightened inflammation and a hypercoagulable state. Conclusion: CMR imaging is invaluable for characterising such masses and can aid in distinguishing a thrombus from a myxoma. LEARNING POINTS: Differentiating right atrial (RA) thrombus from myxoma: cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is essential for distinguishing RA thrombus from myxoma, preventing unnecessary surgeries.Hypercoagulable and inflammatory states: spontaneous in-situ RA thrombi can occur without deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or atrial fibrillation, especially in hypercoagulable and inflammatory conditions.Transcatheter aspiration: this less invasive alternative to surgery is effective for large, mobile RA thrombi, reducing embolisation risk.

RESUMO

Spontaneous gas-bubble nucleation in weak gas-liquid solutions has been a challenging topic in theory, experimentation, and computer simulations. In analogy with recent advances in crystallization and droplet formation studies, the diffusive-shielding stabilization and thermodynamic irreversibility of bulk nanobubble (bNB) mechanisms are revisited and deployed to characterize nucleation processes in a stochastic framework of computer experiments using the large-scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator code. Theoretical bases, assumptions, and limitations underlying the irreversibility hypothesis of bNBs, and their computational counterparts, are extensively described and illustrated. In essence, it is established that the irreversibility hypothesis can be numerically investigated by converging the system volume (due to the finiteness of interatomic forces) and the initial dissolved-gas concentration in the solution (due to the single-bNB limitation). Helium nucleation in liquid Pb17Li alloy is selected as a representative case study, where it exhibits typical characteristics of noble-gas/liquid-metal systems. The proposed framework lays down the bases on which the stability of gas-bNBs in weak and supersaturated gas-liquid solutions can be inferred and explained from a novel perspective. In essence, it stochastically marches toward a unique irreversible state along out-of-equilibrium nucleation/growth trajectories. Moreover, it does not attempt to characterize the interface or any interface-related properties, neither theoretically nor computationally. It was concluded that bNBs of a few tens of He-atoms are irreversible when dissolved-He concentrations in the weak gas-liquid solution are at least ∼50 and ∼105 mol m-3 at 600 and 1000 K (and ∼80 MPa), respectively, whereas classical molecular dynamics -estimated solubilities are at least two orders of magnitude smaller.

RESUMO

Background: Dementia is a common neurogenerative disease among older adults. Therefore, they are more prone to potentially inappropriate medication (PIM), which is medication that causes more harm rather than protecting the health of an individual. Hence, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) has recognized the risk of certain medication classes on this population and released PIM according to Beers criteria, which is a helpful guide for clinicians to ensure the safety of medication before it is prescribed. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of PIM use among older adults with dementia as a risk factor in comparison to other older adults without dementia. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in an outpatient setting in a tertiary hospital targeting elderly patients aged 65 years old or over from January 2020 to September 2022. A total of 598 patients were screened, and 270 patients met the inclusion criteria. The eligible patients were then divided into two groups: 168 were in a non-dementia group and 102 were in a dementia group. Results: PIM use was reported in patients with and without dementia. The most inappropriate medication that was prescribed comprised atypical antipsychotics PIM for both patients with and without dementia. However, the prevalence was higher in the dementia group for quetiapine (75% vs 24% respectively), olanzapine (82% vs 17% respectively) or risperidone (92% vs 7%, respectively). Anticholinergics were highly prescribed in older adult without dementia as compared to dementia patient and was statistically significant for solifenacin (96% vs.3.6% respectively) and amitriptyline (88% vs 11% respectively). Conclusion: Among elderly patients in outpatient care settings, the prevalence of PIM use is considered high in dementia patients for antipsychotics, while a higher use of benzodiazepine and anticholinergics was found in non-dementia patients.

RESUMO

Alström syndrome is a genetic disease that impacts numerous systems in the human body. The symptoms can vary and appear gradually. Childhood obesity, heart disease (cardiomyopathy), abnormalities in vision, and hearing issues are the main symptoms of this disorder in children. Diabetes mellitus, hepatic issues, and renal dysfunction can all occur over time. Genetic alterations in the ALMS1 gene are the cause of Alström syndrome. It has an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. We address the case of a Saudi woman in her 20s. She had been initially referred for type 2 diabetes, intellectual disability since early childhood, metabolic acidosis, and micrognathia; however, she also exhibited blindness, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and hearing loss, all of which are indicative of Alström syndrome. DNA testing showed that she has a homozygous pathogenic variant in the ALMS gene. Autosomal recessive Alström syndrome has been confirmed as a genetic diagnosis. No other clinically significant variations were found that are associated with the mentioned phenotype. By reporting this mutation, we hope to learn more about the genotypic range of the disease, particularly in the Saudi population. As each member of the family underwent genetic testing, we established a stringent follow-up schedule for our patient and her family.

RESUMO

Background: The Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment-Achilles (VISA-A) questionnaire is a validated instrument for assessing symptoms of Achilles tendinopathy (AT). However, there is a need to validate the Arabic version of the VISA-A (VISA-A-AR) in Arabic-speaking patients with AT. Purpose: To validate the VISA-A-AR in Arabic patients with AT and evaluate its reliability and validity. Study Design: Cohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 3. Methods: The translation and cultural adaptation of the VISA-A questionnaire into Arabic followed international guidelines. A total of 81 participants were recruited, including 45 patients diagnosed with AT and 36 healthy individuals. The AT group comprised male and female native Arabic speakers aged ≥18 years who were diagnosed with and had symptoms of AT. The inclusion criteria for the healthy group were the same, except that they must not have had AT at the time of the study or previously. The exclusion criteria were individuals with a partial or complete Achilles tendon rupture or prior Achilles tendon surgery. The internal consistency of the VISA-A-AR was assessed using the Cronbach α coefficient. Test-retest reliability was evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC[3,1]). Construct validity was assessed through correlation analysis between VISA-A-AR scores and the Arabic versions of the Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36-AR) and the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (ANPRS). Differences in VISA-A-AR scores between patients with AT and healthy controls were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests. Results: The VISA-A-AR demonstrated a high level of internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.935) and excellent test-retest reliability (ICC[3,1] = 0.985). Significant positive correlations were observed between VISA-A-AR scores and SF-36-AR (r(43) = 0.838, P < .001), indicating good construct validity. In addition, VISA-A-AR scores showed a significant negative correlation with ANPRS (rS(43) = -0.835, P < .001). Furthermore, VISA-A-AR scores exhibited a significant difference between patients with AT (mean, 45.82 ± 16.65) and healthy controls (mean, 99.94 ± 0.33) (P < .001). Conclusion: The findings of this study validate the VISA-A-AR as a reliable and valid tool for assessing symptoms of AT in Arabic-speaking patients.

RESUMO

This study aims to investigate the relationship between mammographic breast density and the surgical outcomes of breast cancer. PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Science Direct, and the Wiley Library were systematically searched for relevant literature. Rayyan QRCI was employed throughout this comprehensive process. Our results included ten studies with a total of 5017 women diagnosed with breast cancer. The follow-up duration ranged from 1 year to 15.1 years. Eight out of the twelve included studies reported that low mammographic breast density was significantly associated with no local recurrence, metachronous contralateral breast cancer, and fewer challenges in the preoperative and intraoperative phases. On the other hand, four studies reported that mammographic breast density is not linked to disease recurrence, survival, re-excision, or an incomplete clinical and pathological response. There is a significant association between low mammographic breast density and reduced challenges in the preoperative and intraoperative phases, as well as no local recurrence and fewer mastectomy cases. However, the link between mammographic breast density and disease recurrence, survival, re-excision, and incomplete clinical and pathological response is less clear, with some studies reporting no significant association. The findings suggest that mammographic breast density may play a role in certain aspects of breast cancer outcomes, but further research is needed to fully understand its impact.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Regular physical activity (PA) contributes to physical and mental wellbeing. Due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related lockdowns in 2020, regular PA had been adjusted. Furthermore, students became accustomed to studying at home. Students in the healthcare field, in particular, have a better understanding of the link between PA and mental health. This study aimed to assess the association between psychological wellbeing and PA among healthcare students at one public university in Saudi Arabia during the COVID-19 pandemic period. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted between November 2021 and February 2022. Healthcare students at one public university in Saudi Arabia were invited to participate in an online survey, consisting of three sections. The first section contained questions about demographic data. The second section was the International Physical Activity-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), which is composed of seven questions designed to assess the level of PA. The third part is The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), which is a self-reported questionnaire comprising 20 questions that assessed depressive symptoms on a four-point scale. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskal Wallis test were used to analyze the collected data using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 28.0 (Released 2021; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). RESULTS: The total responses received were 197 (response rate=60%). The majority of students in this sample were performing inadequate PA and reported depressive symptoms. No association was found between the amount of PA practiced and psychological wellbeing. There was a significant difference between specialties in relation to PA. CONCLUSION: The majority of students in this sample were performing inadequate PA and reported depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 lockdown. The importance of PA should be promoted among healthcare students.

RESUMO

Recycling rubber and/or steel fiber components of waste tires in construction applications is a venue for maximizing the recycling rate of these items. Additionally, it supports the move towards producing sustainable construction materials and conserving natural resources. Previous research explored the viability of employing recycled waste rubber particles as an alternative for natural aggregate. Despite the adverse effect of rubber on the mechanical properties of concrete (e.g., lower compressive strength), it produces several advantages, including excellent dynamic and ductility properties, which can be utilized in structural members critical to dynamic loads, e.g., blasts, earthquakes, and impacts. In an effort to expand the adoption of waste rubber in concrete beams and to eliminate key concerns associated with the degradation of their flexural behavior, the functionally graded (FG) beams concept was utilized. The present investigation comprised the testing of five beams using a four-point bending configuration. Plain concrete, rubberized concrete (RuC), and steel-fiber reinforced rubberized concrete (SFRRuC) beams were cast along with FG beams arranged in two layers. The top layer of the FG beams comprised plain concrete, while the bottom layer consisted of RuC or SFRRuC. Experimental findings indicated that the flexural behavior of the FG beam with layers of SFRRuC and plain concrete exceeded the flexural strength, displacement ductility ratio, and toughness performances of the plain concrete beam by 9.9%, 12.9%, and 24.4%, respectively. The moment-curvature relationship was also predicted for the tested beam and showed an excellent match with the experimentally measured relationship.

RESUMO

The red palm weevil (RPW) is a significant threat to date palms. Conventional pest control has been ineffective. This study aims to evaluate entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) indigenous to Saudi Arabia and commercial against RPW. We used 33 soil samples collected from four areas of Saudi Arabia. The indigenous EPNs were isolated and cultured using an insect baiting method to obtain infective juveniles. Pathogenicity bioassays were conducted against different stages of RPW, including eggs, larvae, and adults. The bioassay was performed using all the isolates at 1 × 106 IJ/mL. Distilled water was used as a control. The results revealed that only 9.09% of soil samples contained positive EPNs. Through DNA sequencing analysis, the positive samples were identified as indigenous isolates belonging to Heterorhabditis indica and Steinernema carpocapsae EPN species. In pathogenicity tests, 90% mortality of RPW eggs was observed after five days. Similar mortality trends were seen in RPW larvae and adults, with 90% mortality recorded after ten days for all the EPN treatments. Mortality increased with the duration of post-EPN inoculation exposure. The 1 × 106 IJ/mL concentrations of EPN effectively killed various stages of RPW in the laboratory. More research is needed to test EPNs against RPW in the field.

RESUMO

Meniere's disease is defined by the presence of three essential symptoms: episodic vertigo, tinnitus, and sensorineural hearing loss. The mainstay of its management constitutes lifestyle modification and medical and surgical therapies. Cupping therapy is an ancient treatment that is still widely used especially in the Middle East, Africa, and the United Kingdom. This study portraits the case of a 54-year-old patient suffering from long-standing Meniere's disease. The patient was treated with the routine treatment that was to no avail. It was decided that the patient undergoes cupping therapy. Over two years of monthly cupping therapy sessions, the patient reported a decrease in intensity and frequency of symptoms until its disappearance. Cupping therapy has shown a positive outcome on the patient. According to our search, there is a previous case report published in 2020 that shares multiple similarities with our case. Further studies on cupping therapy and its efficacy, mechanism of action, and complications on a larger scale are advised.

RESUMO

Bacterial coinfection among patients with confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a critical medical concern that increases the disease severity and mortality rate. The current study is aimed at evaluating the effects of bacterial coinfections among COVID-19 patients, especially in relation to degree of severity and mortality. A retrospective study was conducted for patients with positive COVID-19 test, admitted to a regional COVID-19 hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between May and August 2020. A specimen (e.g., blood, urine, or sputum) was collected from patients with confirmed COVID-19, and was cultured to determine bacterial coinfection caused by multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. COVID-19 patients were categorized into 2 groups based on the result of bacterial coinfection culture, as COVID-19 patients with coinfection and COVID-19 patients without coinfection. Independent sample t test or Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare age and hospitalization period between these groups. In addition, binominal logistic regression was applied to identify risk factors associated with mortality and bacterial coinfection. The study included 342 patients with laboratory confirmed COVID-19. Eighty (23.3%) patients were diagnosed with bacterial coinfection, while the remaining 262 (76.6%) patients did not test positive for bacterial coinfection. Length of hospital stay was prolonged among COVID-19 patients diagnosed with bacterial coinfection (16.01 ±â€…11.36 days) when compared with patients without bacterial coinfection (6.5 ±â€…6.12 days). Likewise, the mortality rate was significantly higher among COVID-19 patients with bacterial coinfection (90%) compared to those without bacterial coinfection (49.2%). Gram-negative bacteria were predominant compared to gram-positive, as Klebsiella pneumoniae (35 [43.8%]) and Acinetobacter baumanni (32 [40%]). On the other hand, Staphylococcus aureus (4 [5%]), Enterococcus faecalis (1 [1.3%]), and Enterococcus faecium (1 [1.3%]) were identified as gram-positive bacterial species from recruited patients. The findings of the current study showed that prolong hospitalization is the main risk factor associated with bacterial coinfection and death. Thus, health care providers should minimize hospitalization as well as following a continuous monitoring for bacterial coinfection among COVID-19 patients, to control the spread of infection and reducing the severity and mortality rate among COVID-19 patients.

RESUMO

Preterm birth remains a significant global health concern as it can lead to various health complications and long-term developmental challenges. Early nutrition intervention plays a crucial role in optimizing the growth, development, and overall health outcomes of premature infants. This review aims to summarize and analyze the existing literature regarding the effect of early nutrition interventions on premature babies. A comprehensive search was conducted through various electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, focusing on nutrition interventions specifically targeting premature infants. The review highlights the benefits of early nutrition interventions, including enteral and parenteral feeding, human milk, and the provision of specific nutrients. These interventions have been shown to enhance growth rates, promote neurodevelopmental outcomes, reduce the incidence and severity of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), reduce the risk of infection, and improve overall morbidity and mortality rates in premature babies. Overall, the findings from this review suggest that early nutrition interventions have a positive impact on the health and developmental outcomes of premature babies. However, further research is required to determine the optimal approaches, optimal timing, and long-term effects of various interventions. Collaboration between healthcare providers, researchers, and families is crucial in implementing evidence-based nutrition practices and supporting the growth and development of premature infants.
