RESUMO

Ischemic diseases are characterized by obstruction of blood flow to the respective organs, of which ischemia of the heart and brain are the most prominent manifestations with shared pathophysiological mechanisms and risk factors. While most revascularization therapies aim to restore blood flow, this can be challenging due to the limited therapeutic window available for treatment approaches. For a very long time, mesenchymal stromal cells have been used to treat cerebral and cardiac ischemia. However, their application is restricted either by inefficient mode of delivery or the low cell survival rates following implantation into the ischemic microenvironment. Nonetheless, several studies are currently focusing on using of mesenchymal stromal cells engineered to overexpress therapeutic genes as a cell-based gene therapy to restore angiogenesis. This review delves into the utilization of MSCs for angiogenesis and the applications of engineered MSCs for the treatment of cardiac and cerebral ischemia. Moreover, the safety issues related to the genetic modification of MSCs have also been discussed.

RESUMO

This study aims to investigate the physical stability, droplet size, zeta potential, and antimicrobial properties of nanoemulsions formulated with betel leaf extract using ß-cyclodextrin (CD) and sodium alginate (SA) biopolymers. Nanoemulsions with ß-cyclodextrin exhibit superior stability at lower temperatures, with limited droplet size, and strong electrostatic repulsion. Morphological images demonstrate the successful encapsulation of betel leaf extract within both biopolymers, highlighting their potential for antimicrobial applications. Both CD and SA nanoemulsions display inhibitory effects on bacterial strains (E. coli, P. aeruginosa, L. monocytogenes, S. aureus, and B. cereus) and fungal growth (A. brasiliensis, R. stolonifer, F. oxysporum, and C. albicans). SA nanoemulsions show higher antimicrobial activity due to H+ ion release, particularly against A. brasiliensis and C. albicans. These findings underscore the potential of betel leaf extract nanoemulsions, especially those with SA, for various antimicrobial applications for sustainable food packaging, highlighting their significance in addressing microbial challenges.

RESUMO

Understanding the lattice thermal conductivity (κl) of ß-Ga2O3 is very intriguing owing to its advantages in high-voltage and high-temperature applications. Despite several attempts, the underlying mechanism and causes of the notable discrepancies found in the κl values of ß-Ga2O3 along [100] and [001] directions calculated using first principles remained unresolved. We demonstrate that the understanding of the nature of chemical bonding is crucial to overcome the inconsistency in theoretically reported κl values. In low-symmetry structures such as ß-Ga2O3, the nature of the interactions is primarily long-range; therefore, a sufficiently large supercell inclusive of various bonding characteristics is required to capture relevant phonon wavelengths. Bonding nature-aware structure modeling allows precise estimation of acoustic and optical mode contributions towards κl. Additionally, phonon mean free path analysis confirms that considering only third-order interaction terms is adequate to determine the κl of ß-Ga2O3. The calculated κl values are in excellent agreement with experimentally reported values in all three directions. Our results establish that the bonding nature and its influence on phonon scattering are essential to consider in calculating κl accurately.

RESUMO

Background and aim The deltoid is a common site for intramuscular injections, but guidelines for administration lack standardization. Global researchers propose various techniques, and recent study reports indicate a 1.5-15% incidence of nerve palsies due to injections. This pilot cadaveric study aimed to standardize the deltoid intramuscular injection sites in the Southeast Asian population. Methods This cadaveric study of a two-year duration was conducted in the Department of Anatomy as an intramural research project in collaboration with the Departments of Anatomy and Orthopedics. In the first year of study, which was the pilot phase of the project, the available six cadavers, i.e., 12 upper extremity specimens were dissected. Anthropometric measurements of deltoid muscle along with the distance of underlying neurovascular structures like the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery were measured from neighboring bony landmarks. This article presents the observations of the six cadavers studied in the pilot phase and shall be followed up by another article after the project. Results In adults, in anatomical position, the mean distances of the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery from the mid-acromial point are 8.19±0.616 and 8.66±0.968 cm, respectively. The deltoid thickness at 3, 5, and 7 cm from mid-acromial point was observed to be 1.079±0.13 cm (0.5-1.78 cm), 1.599±0.12 cm (1-2.96 cm), and 1.815±1.0 cm (1.2-2.5 cm), respectively. The acquired qualitative and quantitative data were tabulated, graphically represented, and statistically analyzed. Conclusions The deltoid intramuscular injection (IMI) must be given at or below the level of the midpoint of the deltoid muscle, but never in the upper half. We recommend a site, 4 fingerbreadths/9 cm below the mid-acromion point as the safest site to avoid injury to any underlying neurovascular structures.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Amid rising health awareness, natural products which has milder effects than medical drugs are becoming popular. However, only few systems can quantitatively assess their impact on living organisms. Therefore, we developed a deep-learning system to automate the counting of cells in a gerbil model, aiming to assess a natural product's effectiveness against ischemia. METHODS: The image acquired from paraffin blocks containing gerbil brains was analyzed by a deep-learning model (fine-tuned Detectron2). RESULTS: The counting system achieved a 79%-positive predictive value and 85%-sensitivity when visual judgment by an expert was used as ground truth. CONCLUSIONS: Our system evaluated hydrogen water's potential against ischemia and found it potentially useful, which is consistent with expert assessment. Due to natural product's milder effects, large data sets are needed for evaluation, making manual measurement labor-intensive. Hence, our system offers a promising new approach for evaluating natural products.

RESUMO

The gut microbiota (GM) produces various molecules that regulate the physiological functionality of the brain through the gut-brain axis (GBA). Studies suggest that alteration in GBA may lead to the onset and progression of various neurological dysfunctions. Moreover, aging is one of the prominent causes that contribute to the alteration of GBA. With age, GM undergoes a shift in population size and species of microflora leading to changes in their secreted metabolites. These changes also hamper communications among the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal), ENS (enteric nervous system), and ANS (autonomic nervous system). A therapeutic intervention that has recently gained attention in improving health and maintaining communication between the gut and the brain is calorie restriction (CR), which also plays a critical role in autophagy and neurogenesis processes. However, its strict regime and lifelong commitment pose challenges. The need is to produce similar beneficial effects of CR without having its rigorous compliance. This led to an exploration of calorie restriction mimetics (CRMs) which could mimic CR's functions without limiting diet, providing long-term health benefits. CRMs ensure the efficient functioning of the GBA through gut bacteria and their metabolites i.e., short-chain fatty acids, bile acids, and neurotransmitters. This is particularly beneficial for elderly individuals, as the GM deteriorates with age and the body's ability to digest the toxic accumulates declines. In this review, we have explored the beneficial effect of CRMs in extending lifespan by enhancing the beneficial bacteria and their effects on metabolite production, physiological conditions, and neurological dysfunctions including neurodegenerative disorders.

RESUMO

Perovskite materials, celebrated for their exceptional optoelectronic properties, have seen extensive application in the field of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), where research is as abundant as the proverbial "carloads of books." In this review, the research of perovskite materials is delved into from a dimensional perspective, with a focus on the exemplary performance of low-dimensional perovskite materials in LEDs. This discussion predominantly revolves around perovskite quantum wires and perovskite nanorods. Perovskite quantum wires are versatile in their growth, compatible with both solution-based and vapor-phase growth, and can be deposited over large areas-even on spherical substrates-to achieve commendable electroluminescence (EL). Perovskite nanorods, on the other hand, boast a suite of superior characteristics, such as polarization properties and tunability of the transition dipole moment, endowing them with the great potential to enhance light extraction efficiency. Furthermore, zero-dimensional (0D) perovskite materials like nanocrystals (NCs) are also the subject of widespread research and application. This review reflects on and synthesizes the unique qualities of the aforementioned materials while exploring their vital roles in the development of high-efficiency perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs).

RESUMO

The structure and stability of charge-coupled lanthanide-substituted Ca10(PO4)6F2 as a potential fluoride-bearing nuclear waste form for the back-end fuel cycle of Gen-IV molten salt reactor have been studied in detail. Here, calcium fluorapatite (CaFAp) as a model structure was taken for incorporation of trivalent lanthanides (Lns, La-Lu except Pm) in a charge-coupled fashion, i.e., 2Ca2+ = Na+ + Ln3+. In these fluorapatite phases, Na+ is substituted exclusively at nine coordinated sites, Ca1, while Ln3+ is preferentially substituted at seven coordinated sites, Ca2. These compositions are further characterized for the local structure by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. Thermal expansion was measured by high-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the instantaneous thermal expansion coefficient correlates well with the unsubstituted CaFAp. The heat capacities of these solids were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and drop calorimetry, whereas enthalpies of formation were obtained by high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. The thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that lanthanides having ionic radii closure to Ca2+ (Sm3+ and Gd3+) imparted higher thermodynamic stability to the substituted CaFAp as compared to that of other Ln3+. According to structural and thermodynamic investigations, entropy-stabilized fluorapatite waste from NaPr0.125Nd0.125Sm0.125Eu0.125Gd0.125Tb0.125Dy0.125Ho0.125Ca8(PO4)6F2 (WF-Ln) was successfully synthesized for the first time. Furthermore, electron beam irradiation studies probed by XRD, FTIR, Raman, and X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy implied the radiation resistance nature of this substituted CaFAps up to 20 MGy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: For cell wall biosynthesis, drug-resistant S. aureus uses a special protein called PBP2a, even when antibiotics are present and stop its natural processes from working. To combat this, novel therapies are required to specifically target PBP2a with greater efficacy. METHODS: Using computational approaches, we screened nine phenolic compounds from other Bergenia species, including Bergenia ciliata, Begenia ligulata, Bergenia purpurascens, and Ber-genia stracheyi, against the PBP2a allosteric site to explore the potential interaction between phe-nolic compounds and a specific region of PBP2a known as the allosteric site. RESULTS: Based on interaction patterns and estimated affinity, vitexin has been found to be the most prominent phenolic compound. We performed MD simulations on vitexin and ceftazidime as control molecules based on the docking results. The binding free energy estimates of vitexin (-94.48 +/- 17.92 kJ/mol) using MM/PBSA were lower than those of the control (-67.61 +/- 12.29 kJ/mol), which suggests that vitexin may be able to inhibit PBP2a activity in MRSA. CONCLUSION: It has been intriguing to observe a correlation between the affinity of the lead com-pounds at the allosteric site and the modification of Tyr446, the active site gatekeeper residue in PBP2a. Our findings have implied that lead compounds can either directly or indirectly decrease PBP2a activity by inducing allosteric site change in conventional medicine.

RESUMO

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that poses significant health risks and requires early detection for effective treatment. This study proposing a novel approach that integrates a transformer-based model with hand-crafted texture features and Gray Wolf Optimization, aiming to enhance efficiency of melanoma classification. Preprocessing involves standardizing image dimensions and enhancing image quality through median filtering techniques. Texture features, including GLCM and LBP, are extracted to capture spatial patterns indicative of melanoma. The GWO algorithm is applied to select the most discriminative features. A transformer-based decoder is then employed for classification, leveraging attention mechanisms to capture contextual dependencies. The experimental validation on the HAM10000 dataset and ISIC2019 dataset showcases the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The transformer-based model, integrated with hand-crafted texture features and guided by Gray Wolf Optimization, achieves outstanding results. The results showed that the proposed method performed well in melanoma detection tasks, achieving an accuracy and F1-score of 99.54% and 99.11% on the HAM10000 dataset, and an accuracy of 99.47%, and F1-score of 99.25% on the ISIC2019 dataset. • We use the concepts of LBP and GLCM to extract features from the skin lesion images. • The Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm is employed for feature selection. • A decoder based on Transformers is utilized for melanoma classification.

RESUMO

The efficient and prolonged neurotransmission is reliant on the coordinated action of numerous synaptic proteins in the presynaptic compartment that remodels synaptic vesicles for neurotransmitter packaging and facilitates their exocytosis. Once a cycle of neurotransmission is completed, membranes and associated proteins are endocytosed into the cytoplasm for recycling or degradation. Both exocytosis and endocytosis are closely regulated in a timely and spatially constrained manner. Recent research demonstrated the impact of dysfunctional synaptic vesicle retrieval in causing retrograde degeneration of midbrain neurons and has highlighted the importance of such endocytic proteins, including auxilin, synaptojanin1 (SJ1), and endophilin A (EndoA) in neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, the role of other associated proteins, including leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), adaptor proteins, and retromer proteins, is being investigated for their roles in regulating synaptic vesicle recycling. Research suggests that the degradation of defective vesicles via presynaptic autophagy, followed by their recycling, not only revitalizes them in the active zone but also contributes to strengthening synaptic plasticity. The presynaptic autophagy rejuvenating terminals and maintaining neuroplasticity is unique in autophagosome formation. It involves several synaptic proteins to support autophagosome construction in tiny compartments and their retrograde trafficking toward the cell bodies. Despite having a comprehensive understanding of ATG proteins in autophagy, we still lack a framework to explain how autophagy is triggered and potentiated in compact presynaptic compartments. Here, we reviewed synaptic proteins' involvement in forming presynaptic autophagosomes and in retrograde trafficking of terminal cargos. The review also discusses the status of endocytic proteins and endocytosis-regulating proteins in neurodegenerative diseases and strategies to combat neurodegeneration.

RESUMO

We report square planar mononuclear Pt(II)-complexes of terpyridines in the form of [PtCl(L1/L2)]PF6 as phosphorescent emitters (where L1 = 4-(3-pyridine)2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and L2 = 4'-(3-pyridinyl)-4,4''-di(tert-butyl)-2,2':6'2''-terpyridine). Complex 2 showed emission at 534 nm in the DCM solution with photoluminescence quantum efficiency (ΦPL) = 14%, while in the mCBP host (5-wt % doped), the emission shifted to 584 nm with ΦPL = 37.8% and a phosphorescence lifetime (τphos) of 37.8 µs. Complex 2 in mCBP was used to fabricate a solution-processed phosphorescent organic light-emitting diode (PhOLED) which showed maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) = 7.4% with yellow emission at λEL = 570 nm and exhibited a low efficiency roll-off with an EQE drop to 7.0% at 1000 cd/m2.

RESUMO

Two novel nitrogen-rich green energetic compounds were synthesized for the first time from readily available and cost-effective pyrazine starting materials. All newly synthesized molecules were comprehensively characterized, including infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry. All compounds have additionally been validated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The physicochemical properties of compounds 2, 4, and 5 were thoroughly investigated. Notably, all compounds exhibit remarkable performance, such as a high density (>1.84 g cm-3), excellent detonation properties (VOD > 8582 m s-1, and DP > 31.3 GPa), outstanding thermostability (>205 °C), and high insensitivity (IS > 35 J, and FS = 360 N). These attributes are quite comparable to those of secondary benchmark explosives such as TATB, RDX, LLM-105, and FOX-7. This tuned performance evidences that the incorporation of hydrazine, nitro, and aminotetrazole into the pyrazine framework fosters robust nonbonded interactions, ultimately enhancing thermal stability and reducing sensitivity. The findings of this study not only signify that compounds 2 and 5 have excellent detonation properties and stability but also prove that the strategy of replacing amino groups with hydrazine and aminotetrazole is a practical means of developing new insensitive energetic materials.

RESUMO

Upon osmotic compression, rotationally symmetric faceted colloidal particles can form translationally ordered, orientationally disordered rotator mesophases. This study explores the mechanism of rotator-to-crystal phase transitions where orientational order is gained in a translationally ordered phase, using rotator-phase forming truncated cubes as a testbed. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted for two selected truncations (s), one for s = 0.527 where the rotator and crystal lattices are dissimilar and one for s = 0.572 where the two phases have identical lattices. These differences set the stage for a qualitative difference in their rotator-crystal transitions, highlighting the effect of lattice distortion on phase transition kinetics. Our simulations reveal that significant lattice deviatoric effects could hinder the rotator-to-crystal transition and favor arrangements of lower packing fraction instead. Indeed, upon compression, it is found that for s = 0.527, the rotator phase does not spontaneously transition into the stable, densely packed crystal due to the high lattice strains involved but instead transitions into a metastable solid phase to be colloquially referred to as "orientational salt" for short, which has a similar lattice as the rotator phase and exhibits two distinct particle orientations having substitutional order, alternating regularly throughout the system. This study paves the way for further analysis of diffusionless transformations in nanoparticle systems and how lattice-distortion could influence crystallization kinetics.

RESUMO

In this paper, the effect of doping and nanostructuring on the electrostatic potential across the electrochemical interface between a transition metal oxide and a water electrolyte is investigated by means of the Poisson-Boltzmann model. For spherical nanoparticles and nanorods, compact expressions for the limiting potentials at which the space charge layer includes the whole semiconductor are reported. We provide a quantitative analysis of the distribution of the potential drop between the solid and the liquid and show that the relative importance changes with doping. It is usually assumed that high doping improves charge dynamics in the semiconductor but reduces the width of the space charge layer. However, nanostructuring counterbalances the latter negative effect; we show quantitatively that in highly doped nanoparticles the space charge layer can occupy a similar volume fraction as in low-doped microparticles. Moreover, as shown by some recent experiments, under conditions of high doping the electric fields in the Helmholtz layer can be as high as 100 mV/Å, comparable to electric fields inducing freezing in water. This work provides a systematic quantitative framework for understanding the effects of doping and nanostructuring on electrochemical interfaces, and suggests that it is necessary to better characterize the interface at the atomistic level.

RESUMO

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network that connects various hardware, software, data storage, and applications. These interconnected devices provide services to businesses and can potentially serve as entry points for cyber-attacks. The privacy of IoT devices is increasingly vulnerable, particularly to threats like viruses and illegal software distribution lead to the theft of critical information. Ant Colony-Optimized Artificial Neural-Adaptive Tensorflow (ACO-ANT) technique is proposed to detect malicious software illicitly disseminated through the IoT. To emphasize the significance of each token in source duplicate data, the noise data undergoes processing using tokenization and weighted attribute techniques. Deep learning (DL) methods are then employed to identify source code duplication. Also the Multi-Objective Recurrent Neural Network (M-RNN) is used to identify suspicious activities within an IoT environment. The performance of proposed technique is examined using Loss, accuracy, F measure, precision to identify its efficiency. The experimental outcomes demonstrate that the proposed method ACO-ANT on Malimg dataset provides 12.35%, 14.75%, 11.84% higher precision and 10.95%, 15.78%, 13.89% higher f-measure compared to the existing methods. Further, leveraging block chain for malware detection is a promising direction for future research the fact that could enhance the security of IoT and identify malware threats.

RESUMO

A novel fused-ring compound, 5-azido-6-oxo-6,7-dihydro-[1,2,5]oxadiazolo[3,4-b]pyrazine 1-oxide (3a), was synthesized for the first time with simple two-step process and characterized using various spectroscopic techniques such NMR, IR, EA and HRMS. Two polymorphs (α-3a and ß-3a) identified by SCXRD differ in crystal packing and noncovalent interactions, demonstrating high density, substantial heat of formation, and superior detonation properties with reduced mechanical sensitivity compared to TNT, TATB, and close to RDX, suggesting their potential as environmentally friendly high energy density materials.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Sabkhas represent polyextreme environments characterized by elevated salinity levels, intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, and extreme temperature fluctuations. In this study, we present the complete genomes of five bacterial isolates isolated from the sabkha-shore region and investigate their genomic organization and gene annotations. A better understanding of the bacterial genomic organization and genetic adaptations of these bacteria holds promise for engineering microbes with tailored functionalities for diverse industrial and agricultural applications, including bioremediation and promotion of plant growth under salinity stress conditions. DATA DESCRIPTION: We present a comprehensive genome sequencing and annotation of five bacteria (kcgeb_sa, kcgeb_sc, kcgeb_sd, kcgeb_S4, and kcgeb_S11) obtained from the shores of the Abu Dhabi Sabkha region. Initial bacterial identification was conducted through 16 S rDNA amplification and sequencing. Employing a hybrid genome assembly technique combining Illumina short reads (NovaSeq 6000) and Oxford Nanopore long reads (MinION), we obtained complete annotated high-quality gap-free genome sequences. The genome sizes of the kcgeb_sa, kcgeb_sc, kcgeb_sd, kcgeb_S4, and kcgeb_S11 isolates were determined to be 2.4 Mb, 4.1 Mb, 2.9 Mb, 5.05 Mb, and 4.1 Mb, respectively. Our analysis conclusively assigned the bacterial isolates as Staphylococcus capitis (kcgeb_sa), Bacillus spizizenii (kcgeb_sc and kcgeb_S11), Pelagerythrobacter marensis (kcgeb_sd), and Priestia aryabhattai (kcgeb_S4).

RESUMO

Stimuli-responsive materials have garnered substantial interest in recent years, particularly liquid crystal networks (LCNs) with sophisticatedly designed structures and morphing capabilities. Extensive efforts have been devoted to LCN structural designs spanning from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) configurations and their intricate morphing behaviors through designed alignment. However, achieving microscale structures and large-area preparation necessitates the development of novel techniques capable of facilely fabricating LCN microstructures with precise control over both overall shape and alignment, enabling a 3D-to-3D shape change. Herein, a simple and cost-effective in-cell soft lithography (ICSL) technique is proposed to create LCN microstructures with customized shapes and predesigned morphing. The ICSL technique involves two sequential steps: fabricating the desired microstructure as the template by using the photopolymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS) method and reproducing the LCN microstructures through templating. Meanwhile, surface anchoring is employed to design and achieve molecular alignment, accommodating different deformation modes. With the proposed ICSL technique, cylindrical and spherical microlens arrays (CMLAs and SMLAs) have been successfully fabricated with stimulus-driven polarization-dependent focusing effects. This technique offers distinct advantages including high customizability, large-area production, and cost-effectiveness, which pave a new avenue for extensive applications in different fields, exemplified by adaptive soft micro-optics and photonics.
