RESUMO

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with an unknown cause. Recent research has highlighted the importance of the gut in neuronal and immune maturation through the exchange of nutrients and cellular signals. This has led to the "gut-first PD" hypothesis, which aims to explain many of the sporadic cases and their prodromal intestinal symptoms, such as constipation and intestinal α-synuclein (aSyn) aggregation. The link between mitochondrial dysfunction and aSyn deposition is central to PD pathophysiology, since they can also trigger pro-inflammatory signals associated with aSyn deposition, potentially contributing to the onset of PD. As mitochondria are derived from ancestral alpha-proteobacteria, other bacteria may specifically target this organelle. We sought to use Nocardia cyriacigeorgica, a bacterium previously associated with parkinsonism, and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) as pro-inflammatory modulators to gain further insight into the onset of PD. This study indicates that aSyn aggregation plus mitochondrial dysfunction without intestinal barrier leakage are not sufficient to trigger gut-first PD.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of resistance and aerobic exercise on colorectal cancer (CRC) development in mice induced by azoxymethane (AOM) coupled with colitis. METHODS: Forty animals induced with CRC were used, divided into five groups of eight animals each: sedentary; continuous aerobics; continuous anaerobic; aerobic PI; and anaerobic PI. AOM was administered to the animals in two doses of 10 mg/kg each over the course of two weeks, the first dose administered in the third week and the second administered in the fourth. For the colitis, three cycles of dextran sodium sulfate were administered for five days, separated by two weeks of water. The 14th week of the experiment saw the euthanasia, the removal of their colons, and the creation of microscopy slides for histological analysis. RESULTS: Preneoplastic lesions developed in all five groups; there were no significant differences between them. However, in terms of inflammatory symptoms, mucosal ulceration was much more frequently in the exercise groups than in the sedentary group (p = 0.016). The number of polyps overall (p = 0.002), the distal region's polyp development (p = 0.003), and the proximal region's polyp development (p = 0.04) were all statistically different than sedentary group. CONCLUSIONS: The study discovered no significant difference in disease activity index scores between groups, but there was a significant difference in the number of polyps and the presence of mucosal ulceration in the colon.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of physical exercise on the behavior of rodents with colorectal cancer induced through the use of elevated plus maze. METHODS: We used 40 male hairless mice induced to colorectal cancer, divided into five groups: G1) submitted to pre- and post-induction swimming; G2) pre- and post-induction ladder; G3) post-induction swimming; G4) post-induction ladder; G5) sedentary. At the end of the 14th week, the animals were submitted to the plus maze test. RESULTS: The mean length of stay in the open arm for G1 was 4.17 ± 6.50; G2 37.52 ± 40.7; G3 85.84 ± 42.5; G4 32.92 ± 23.17; and G5 4.09 ± 4.43. In the closed arm, it was 264 ± 23.43 in G1, 187.60 ± 47.73 in G2, 147.50 ± 40.03 in G3, 182.00 ± 40.40 in G4, and in G5 235.36 ± 14.28. In the center, G1 remained 31.86 ± 20.18, G2 74.85 ± 28.37, G3 66.69 ± 19.53, G4 60.55 ± 10.46, and G5 60.55 ± 23.65. CONCLUSIONS: Aerobic exercise for seven weeks after tumor induction showed less impact on the behavior of the animals. On the other hand, it significantly increased the animals' stress level when applied for 14 weeks before and after tumor induction.

RESUMO

The sustainable financial behavior and financial well-being have been a key concern among the developing societies; thereby encompassing the various psychological factors which play a role in influencing individual's positive financial behavior and financial well-being, this study is conducted. Research focusing on the psychological aspect of human financial behavior and well-being is scarce, focusing more on the cognitive side such as financial literacy and numeracy. The aim of this research study is to find the role played by the non-cognitive factors such as self-esteem, self-control, optimism and deliberative thinking, in forming the financial behavior and financial well-being of the young adults. A sample of 429 university students from public and private sector was collected via an online and field survey using purposive sampling technique. The survey contained measures for demographics, self-esteem, optimism, deliberative thinking, self-control, general financial behavior and financial well-being. SPSS and PLS-SEM tools were used for the exploration of the relationships among dependent and independent variables. The results of PLS path analysis demonstrate that among the non-cognitive factors, self-control and deliberative thinking show a significant association with both financial behavior, and financial security. Self-esteem plays no significant role in forming the financial behavior of the young adults when all the variables are taken together but it exhibits a significant association with financial well-being (financial security and financial anxiety). Optimism on the other hand exhibits no significant association with both financial behavior and financial well-being (financial security and financial anxiety). The results of this study complement the previous studies and also put forth new outcomes. This research is unique as it is the first of its kind conducted in a consumption-oriented economy like Pakistan. In addition to the previous studies which have often established the link of self-esteem with general well-being, this study goes further by analyzing the association between self-esteem and financial well-being and by the identification of the role played by non-cognitive factors like self-esteem, optimism, deliberative thinking and self-control together on the financial behavior and financial well-being of the individuals using PLS-SEM approach.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The present study was conducted to investigate in 20 extensive sheep farms for the seroprevalence of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (n=402) and Toxoplasma gondii (n=228). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for the detection of antibodies to C. pseudotuberculosis/T. gondii. It was observed that C. pseudotuberculosis showed the highest prevalence in the region (34.07%) with statistically significant presence (p<0.05) in ewes. Antibodies to T. gondii was reported in 14.91% of the animals studied. About C. pseudotuberculosis/T. gondii coinfection the categories of rams showed significant (p<0.05) differences, suggesting that this gender could perpetuate the diseases in the flocks. It was concluded that the knowledge about the diseases in the region under study would facilitate the execution of prophylactic measures, especially against the diseases that pose risks to the public health and cause damages to the producer.

PURPOSE: To compare the use of new cyanoacrylate surgical adhesive associated with macroporous tapes in cutaneous synthesis. METHODS: Male Wistar rats with a longitudinal incision of 4cm were used on the back, divided into four groups: GI used octyl-cyanoacrylate (Dermabond®), GII used N-2-butylcyanoacrylate, GIII used octyl-cyanoacrylate and macroporous tape and GIV used N-2-butyl cyanoacrylate and macroporous tape. On the fourteenth day, the rats were submitted to euthanasia, were divided in two parts, and a layer of skin subcutaneous tissue through an area of operative healing was removed. One part was submitted to the study of rupture strength with the use of tensiometer, and in the other part histological examination was performed. RESULTS: No force test was similar between groups I and II, being different from groups III and IV (P <0.001), which were identical to each other (P> 0.05). The units were compared among the studied groups, and they were different with the use of macroporous tapes (P> 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The purpose of macroporous tapes is associated with CA adhesives in cutaneous tissues that provide more resistant scars. The use of a combination of macroporous tapes leads to complete re-epithelialization, without provoking foreign body reaction, has hemostatic properties and does not cause an absorptive reaction.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research was to evaluate the prevalence of cervical and lumbar pain in obese patients eligible for bariatric surgery and to investigate possible changes in sagittal spine alignment in these patients. METHODS: The following parameters were compared in 30 obese patients and a control group of 25 non-obese volunteers: body mass index, prevalence of cervical and lumbar pain assessed by visual analog scale (VAS), Neck Disability Index [NDI] and Oswestry Disability Index [ODI], as well as radiographic parameters of the spine and pelvis measured with Surgimap software. RESULTS: The cervical and lumbar VAS and the NDI and ODI were significantly worse in obese patients. Compared with the control group, the cervical sagittal vertical axis (cSVA) of the obese group had higher variance (p value = 0.0025) and the cervical lordosis was diminished (p value = 0.0023). Thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis, and the pelvic parameters were not significantly different between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Obese patients demonstrated lower functional performance compared with their non-obese counterparts, while cervical lordosis was diminished and the cSVA was increased in obese patients. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

RESUMO

Maturity models have been adopted in organizations from different sectors of activity, as guides and references for information system (IS) management. In the healthcare field, maturity models have also been used to deal with the enormous complexity and demands of hospital information systems (HIS). This article presents a research project that aimed to develop a new comprehensive model of maturity for a health area. HISMM (hospital information system maturity model) was developed to address the complexity of HIS and intends to offer a useful tool to meet the demands of its management. The HISMM has the peculiarity of combining a set of key maturity influence factors and their respective characteristics, enabling not only the assessment of the global maturity of an HIS but also of the individual maturities of its various dimensions. In this article, we present a methodology for the application and implementation of this model in HIS, thus contributing to its widespread practical application and acceptance.

RESUMO

Maturity models facilitate organizational management, including information systems management, with hospital organizations no exception. This article puts forth a study carried out with a group of experts in the field of hospital information systems management with a view to identifying the main influencing factors to be included in an encompassing maturity model for hospital information systems management. This study is based on the results of a literature review, which identified maturity models in the health field and relevant influencing factors. The development of this model is justified to the extent that the available maturity models for the hospital information systems management field reveal multiple limitations, including lack of detail, absence of tools to determine their maturity and lack of characterization for stages of maturity structured by different influencing factors.

The present study evaluated the performance and carcass yield of naked neck Label Rouge free range broilers fed different levelsof peanut meal in substitution with soybean meal. A total of 128 chickens were distributed among 16 boxes (8 animals/box). Eachbox was considered an experimental parcel and four levels of soybean meal replacement by peanut bran were tested: 0; 12.5;25 and 50%. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 4 treatments and 8 replicates. Chickens fed peanut mealpresented higher weight gain and better feed conversion in all replacement levels analyzed. Replacing 50% of soybean mealby peanut meal presented the highest feed intake. In all three rearing phases analyzed, weight gain was higher in 25 and 50%soybean meal replacement by peanut meal diets. Chickens fed ration without inclusion of peanut meal presented the greatest weight and carcass yield.

RESUMO

Osteochondrosis is an injury on subchondral ossification with predominance of immature skeleton and whose etiology remains unknown. It may affect the femoral condyles (usually the medial condyle) and the involvement is mostly unilateral. The authors draw the attention to this usually late diagnosis due to its infrequent occurrence and report a child's rare case of bilateral osteochondrosis on lateral femoral condyles, stressing that just one similar case has been described in the orthopaedic literature up to the present time.

OBJECTIVE: To describe morphological aspects, and radiographically evaluate the segment of the peroneus longus tendon adjacent to the cuboid bone, in cadavers, and reporting the incidence of a fibular ossicle, in some cases with the help of histological analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty tendon segments were evaluated and radiographed for determining the presence or absence of an accessory ossicle inside the tendon. The specimens where such presence was dubious were sectioned and submitted to macroscopic evaluation. In the cases where doubts persisted, the specimens were submitted to hematoxylin-eosin staining for histological analysis. One specimen where the accessory ossicle had been detected was also histologically evaluated for illustration purposes. RESULTS: All the specimens presented a fusiform dilatation of the area under the arc of the cuboid bone. Radiographic images demonstrated 29 specimens without ossification, 13 with ossification and 8 were doubtful. After macroscopic analysis, only one presented ossification, five did not, and two remained dubious, being submitted to histological analysis that demonstrated no ossification. CONCLUSION: All the specimens presented focal thickening of the tendon under the arc of the cuboid bone. However, quantitative analysis of both specimens submitted to histological evaluation demonstrated that the tendon consisted of fibrocartilaginous tissue lined by hyaline cartilage on the surface of contact with the bone. Thus, under the morphological point of view, fibular ossicle was found in 28% of cases, and, under the radiographic point of view, in 26%.

OBJETIVE: To evaluate extra-capsular technique for the treatment of the anterior cruciate ligament rupture, in dogs. METHODS: It was performed an extra-articulate surgery without arthrotomy of the anterior cruciate ligament by using a strip of the autogenous fascia lata for stabilization of the knee joint in six animals which had severe claudication and drawer movement sign positive. RESULTS: The extra articulate technique was effective with good knee stabilization and satisfactory outcome. CONCLUSION: The use of the fascia lata with an extra capsular technique to fix the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament seems to be useful once it is a simple and rapid procedure with minimum tissue damage and efficient postoperative recovery.
