RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess the developmental outcomes among preschool-aged children and its associated factors in Palestine. METHODS: A cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational design involved a representative sample of preschool-aged children from kindergarten in Ramallah governorate. Data were collected using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, Arabic version-3. Associations between developmental delay (DD), parent, child and family characteristics were analyzed utilizing SPSS-25 version. RESULTS: A total of 249 preschoolers participated in the study. The overall rate of children with Global Developmental Delay (GDD) was 23.7%. The most prevalent DD were in gross motor, personal social, and fine motor skills (25.3%, 17.7%, and 16.5%, respectively). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that the male gender of a child (OR = 2.66, 95% CI [1.37, 5.19]), the mother's part-time work (OR = 6.01, 95% CI [1.68, 21.52]), low family income (OR = 3.67, 95% CI [1.05, 12.73]), and families with three or more children (OR = 1.43, 95% CI [1.15, 1.781]) were statistically significant independent predictors of GDD. CONCLUSION: The study findings revealed higher rate of DD among preschoolers in Palestine than regional areas, especially in gross motor, fine motor, and personal social skills, which has consequences for both national and global health. According to the results, factors related to the child, the mother and the family are associated with the cumulative risk of preschoolers having DD. IMPLICATIONS: It is a crucial role for pediatric nurses to detect DD early and its related risk factors through screening programs to limit the burden of problems in childhood and later adulthood.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Developmental disabilities (DDs) are a global childhood problem whose prevalence is rising, with a disproportionate impact on individuals in low-and middle-income countries. However, data on the prevalence of DDs in the Arab world are limited. This review highlights what is currently known about the prevalence and risk factors of DDs in preschool children in the Arab world. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, CINAHL, Science Direct, and Google Scholar were searched for publications on DDs among preschool children in the Arab world. Only 14 studies were identified in the literature, from 12 Arab countries. RESULTS: The overall estimated prevalence of DDs among preschool children in the Arab world is 27.5%. An analysis of risk factors for DDs showed that child-related, maternal, and family-related factors account for a significant cumulative risk of developing DDs in preschool children. Maternal factors, such as antenatal and perinatal complications, were the most common risk factors. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of DDs among preschoolers is significantly high in the Arab world, which emphasizes the importance of the early detection and diagnosis of DD, as well as its associated risk factors.

RESUMO

Professional nursing bodies have had a well-established, collective history of advancing the nursing profession through career development, advocacy, and continuing education. The purpose of this review paper is to provide a historical overview of these entities, leading up to the formation of specialty nursing associations and the emergence of the Association of Women's Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). The Association of Women's Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is a leader in research, education, and advocacy in the field of women's health, obstetric, and neonatal nursing that has focused on promoting the health and well-being of women, newborns, and their families for the past fifty years.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue and decreased functional status are common health concerns during postpartum. Although studied separately in the past, this study assessed levels and explored the relationship between these two variables. METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted with a convenience sample of 315 women to measure levels and assess the association between fatigue and functional status during postpartum. RESULTS: Moderate levels of fatigue and functional status were found. Fatigue levels and functional status were significantly higher in multiparas compared to primiparas, and fatigue was significantly higher in women who had cesarean births compared to vaginal births. Additionally, no significant correlation was found between fatigue and functional status during postpartum in this study. CONCLUSION: The lack of a statistically significant association between fatigue and functional status warrants further research since limited studies have been conducted. Findings of this study may assist healthcare providers in planning and implementing holistic assessment and care for women in postpartum.

RESUMO

This cross-sectional correlational study examined post-partum depression and its relationship with demographic, maternal, and infant health problems in urban Jordanian women. Participants (n = 315) were selected from five maternal child healthcare centers and one major hospital in Amman, Jordan. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 was used to measure post-partum depression within 12 weeks of birth. A number of socio-demographic and health problems were examined for an association with post-partum depression. Results showed that 25% of post-partum women suffered moderate to severe depression and 50% of the sample had mild depression. None of the socio-demographic variables (age, education, employment, income) were significantly related to post-partum depression; however, two obstetric/infant variables (mode of birth and breastfeeding), were significantly associated with post-partum depression. There was a significant association between post-partum depression and 15 health problems of obstetric, gynecologic (i.e. episiotomy pain, infection), and general health conditions (i.e. fatigue, headache). Nurses and midwives need to emphasize post-partum depression screening, follow-up, and proper management of maternal and infant health factors predisposing to post-partum depression rather than merely focusing on women's inherent demographic factors.

RESUMO

Although the postpartum period is a significant time in a family's life, few studies have addressed the lack of continuity of care and service use during the postpartum period. The aim of this study was to explore the roles of family members in Jordanian women's decision to use postpartum health care services. An exploratory qualitative design was employed to elicit the perspectives of 24 women and 30 health care providers through six focus groups discussions conducted in April 2006. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, translated to English, and analyzed using an inductive content analysis approach. In our study, three roles of family members influencing Jordanian women's decision to use postpartum health care services emerged: supporter role, opponent role, and active participant in care role. Findings supported the need for a family-centered approach when providing postpartum care to enhance positive family roles and limit negative ones to promote continuity of healthcare services use during the postpartum period.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate purpose in life, self-acceptance, perceived stress levels, and menopausal symptoms among Jordanian women. METHODS: A descriptive, correlational design with a convenience sample of 193 women aged 40-55 years was employed. RESULTS: The average age at menopause for the current sample was 47.4 years, and menopausal status did not significantly affect purpose in life, self-acceptance, or perceived stress levels. Negative correlations were found between purpose in life and perceived stress, and between self-acceptance and perceived stress (r = -0.49; p = 0.01 and r = -0.58; p = 0.01, respectively). Menopausal symptoms were found to be a strong negative predictor of purpose in life, self-acceptance, and perceived stress levels. In addition, higher health rating was significantly associated with higher psychological well-being and lower perceived stress levels. Perimenopause was found to be a vulnerable stage for severe menopausal symptoms particularly psychological complaints. However, vasomotor symptoms and loss of sexual interest became more intense among postmenopausal women. Although women in the current study had low psychological well-being and high perceived stress, these were not affected by their menopausal status. CONCLUSION: The study showed the importance of including both physical and psychological symptoms during encounters with health professionals, besides considering women's expectations about menopause to help ease their menopausal transition and improve their well-being.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The barriers that face fathers during childbirth are an understudied phenomenon. The objective of our study was to explore Syrian parents' perceptions of barriers to paternal presence and contribution during childbirth. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological qualitative approach based on Colaizzi's method was used with a purposive sample of 23 mothers and 14 fathers recruited from a major public maternity hospital in Syria. RESULTS: In our study, four themes on barriers to paternal presence and contribution during childbirth were found: 1) sociocultural influences and rigidity; 2) being unprepared; 3) unsupportive policies and attitudes; and 4) unfavorable reactions and circumstances. CONCLUSIONS: Common and current sociocultural norms in Syria do not encourage fathers to be present or contribute during childbirth. Therefore, establishing culturally sensitive supportive policies and practices is a vital step toward overcoming these barriers.

RESUMO

In our study, we explored the roles of a father during childbirth as perceived by Arab Syrian parents. A descriptive phenomenological approach was used to analyze transcripts from interviews and focus groups. Four themes emerged: (a) psychological and spiritual support, (b) being present and concerned, (c) being ready and alert, and (d) fulfilling social obligations. Most women preferred to have their mothers with them during childbirth instead of their husbands. Current health policies do not encourage fathers to play active roles during childbirth and need revision, within culturally acceptable parameters and norms, to meet the health needs of clients.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to explore labor pain coping methods among Jordanian parturients. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were used to analyze data on demographics and coping methods from 100 low-risk parturients who were recruited from the postpartum unit in a major hospital in Jordan: Four labor pain-coping methods that included physiological, psychological, spiritual, and cognitive coping were reported. This study confirms previous findings regarding coping methods and adds new knowledge on coping with labor pain among Jordanian parturients: The significance of childbirth education as a means to inform Jordanian women about coping with labor pain is emphasized. This study also highlighted the important roles that nurses and midwives can play as educators and supporters during pregnancy and labor.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to explore reasons for enrolment in the first bachelor of midwifery programme in Jordan, and to describe midwifery students' evaluations of the programme. DESIGN: a cross-sectional survey design. SETTING: The Faculty of Nursing at Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid, Jordan. PARTICIPANTS: 16 diploma-prepared midwifery students enrolled in the 2-year bachelor-completion programme. MEASUREMENTS AND FINDINGS: an open-ended question explored students' reasons for enrolling in the midwifery programme. For programme evaluation, a 13-item Midwifery Programme Evaluation Questionnaire (MPEQ) was developed and used. Total score ranged from 39-61, with a mean of 51.2 (SD=6.7). CONCLUSION: midwifery students reported five reasons for enrolling in the midwifery programme, which was favourably evaluated. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: encouragement and sustainability of student enrolment in the JUST Bachelor of Midwifery programme are recommended to improve midwifery education and enhance midwifery as a profession.

RESUMO

In this descriptive study, 100 low-risk participants who delivered vaginally were recruited from the postpartum unit of a major hospital in the city of Amman. Three instruments, the Numeric Pain Intensity Scale (NPIS), a pain assessment questionnaire and a demographic questionnaire were used to assess labour experiences and labour pain intensity levels. The majority of Jordanian parturients did not receive pain relief. Eighty-one women reported pain intensity levels of > or = 8 on the NPIS (ranging from 0-10). The mean pain intensity level during the second stage of labour was 8.83. A significant difference in age was found between primiparas and multiparas. Jordanian parturients reported painful labour experiences; therefore, re-evaluation of current maternity nursing and midwifery practices and roles regarding labour pain management are warranted. The roles of supporter and educator among maternity nurses and midwives in Jordan also need to improve considerably.

RESUMO

Limited numbers of studies have addressed Jordanian women's overall views and expectations of their first childbirth experience. A descriptive design using a convenience sample of 77 primigravid women was included in the analyses out of the total sample of 99 women. Participants responded to two valid and reliable questionnaires developed for the purpose of the study: the Expectations of Childbirth Experience questionnaire and the Expectations of Nursing Support During Labor and Birth questionnaire. The majority of primigravid women in this study expected a negative first childbirth experience. Findings indicated that the majority of women expected their overall childbirth experience to be frightening, very long, too difficult and painful. The expectations of a negative childbirth experience could be explained by limited labour preparation and advice given to women. Findings also indicated that women expected inadequate nursing and midwifery support during childbirth. Health-care providers should emphasize the importance of childbirth preparation and improving the quality of intranatal care to help in changing negative childbirth expectations and experiences of Jordanian women.
