RESUMO

Supraventricular tachyarrhythmia (SVT) is the most common form of fetal tachyarrhythmias. The presentation can vary from ill-defined, non-sustained episodes of tachyarrhythmia to frank non-immune hydrops. The standard of care is transplacental therapy by treating the mother with oral antiarrhythmic drugs, followed by direct fetal therapy in refractory cases. We report a case of primigravida in her late 20s, who presented at 28.1 weeks of gestation with fetal hydrops and SVT. She was initially managed with oral digoxin and flecainide, but due to worsening hydrops, risk of fetal demise and extreme prematurity, further management by direct fetal therapy was given in terms of intramuscular digoxin and intraperitoneal flecainide. Following which, the fetus had a favourable outcome. This case highlights the possible role of direct fetal therapy in refractory cases of SVT.

RESUMO

Background: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) affects a significant proportion of population and poses a major therapeutic challenge. Aims and Objectives: To compare the efficacy and safety profile of combination of topical minoxidil 2% plus platelet rich plasma (PRP) (group 1) and topical minoxidil 2% solution alone (group 2) in women having FPHL. Materials and Methods: 26 females with FPHL were randomised into two treatment groups. They were evaluated for increase in hair density, reduction in hair pull test (HPT), patient satisfaction score (PSS) and side effects. Results: Mean change of 34.92 ± 8.39 hairs/cm2 in group 1 (P < 0.001) and 31.21 ± 8.30 hair/cm2 in group 2 (P < 0.001) was seen. 16.7% and 28.6% patients in Group 1 and 2, respectively, had PSS of highly satisfied. The reduction in HPT was significant with P = 0.0123 (group 1) and P = 0.0128 (group 2). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. No major side effects were reported. Conclusion: Minoxidil-PRP combination therapy is an effective modality for FPHL but is not superior to topical 2% minoxidil therapy alone. PRP is a promising option in patients with minoxidil related compliance issues.

RESUMO

The development and growth of a normal prostate gland, as well as its physiological functions, are regulated by the actions of androgens through androgen receptor (AR) signaling which drives multiple cellular processes including transcription, cellular proliferation, and apoptosis in prostate cells. Post-translational regulation of AR plays a vital role in directing its cellular activities via modulating its stability, nuclear localization, and transcriptional activity. Among various post-translational modifications (PTMs), acetylation is an essential PTM recognized in AR and is governed by the regulated actions of acetyltransferases and deacetyltransferases. Acetylation of AR has been identified as a critical step for its activation and depending on the site of acetylation, the intracellular dynamics and activity of the AR can be modulated. Various acetyltransferases such as CBP, p300, PCAF, TIP60, and ARD1 that are known to acetylate AR, may directly coactivate the AR transcriptional function or help to recruit additional coactivators to functionally regulate the transcriptional activity of the AR. Aberrant expression of acetyltransferases and their deregulated activities have been found to interfere with AR signaling and play a key role in development and progression of prostatic diseases, including prostate cancer (PCa). In this review, we summarized recent research advances aimed at understanding the role of various lysine acetyltransferases (KATs) in the regulation of AR activity at the level of post-translational modifications in normal prostate physiology, as well as in development and progression of PCa. Considering the critical importance of KATs in modulating AR activity in physiological and patho-physiological context, we further discussed the potential of targeting these enzymes as a therapeutic option to treat AR-related pathology in combination with hormonal therapy.

RESUMO

Increasing demand for microelectronic devices necessitates the development of highly flexible energy storage technologies with a wide operating voltage. Thus, flexible electrodes and their devices with the requisite mechanical and electrochemical characteristics have prime importance. In this regard, the present article demonstrates the feasibility of designing a flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor using a chemically grown Ni3P2O8 lamellar microstructured electrode embedded with carboxy methyl cellulose-Na2SO4 (CMC-Na2SO4) gel electrolyte. The formed symmetric device impressively exhibited a maximum working voltage window of 1.8 V with a high specific energy of 44.7 W h kg-1 and specific power of 3.3 kW kg-1 along with prolonged cycle life. Also, the device's high deformation tolerance (95%) when bent at 170° with a flashing light-emitting diode (LED) working demonstration showcases its viability for advanced flexible energy storage applications.

RESUMO

Next-generation portable flexible electronic appliances require liquid-free energy storage supercapacitor devices to eliminate leakage and to support mechanical bending that is compatible with roll-to-roll technologies. Hence, a state-of-the-art process is presented to design a solid-state, wide-potential and flexible supercapacitor through the use of nano-pebbles of cerium selenide via a simple successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method that could allow an industry scalable route. We strongly believe that this is the first approach amongst physical and chemical routes not only for synthesizing cerium selenide in thin-film form but also using it for device-grade supercapacitor applications. The designed solid-state symmetric supercapacitor assembled from cerium selenide electrodes sandwiched by PVA-LiClO4 gel electrolyte attains a wide potential window of 1.8 V with capacitance of 48.8 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1 and reveals excellent power density of 4.89 kW kg-1 at an energy density of 11.63 W h kg-1. The formed device is capable of 87% capacitive retention even at a mechanical bending angle of 175°. Lighting up a strip of 21 parallel connected red LEDs clearly demonstrates the practical use of the designed symmetric solid-state supercapacitor, aiming towards the commercialization of the product in the future.

RESUMO

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a heterogeneous disease due to its variable clinical, morphological and genetic features. New chromosomal and molecular abnormalities are being studied to evaluate novel treatment options and prognostic implications. We report a patient with AML who was Philadelphia chromosome-positive along with IDH1R132 mutation and SNP rs11554137(IDH1105GGT). Due to limited reports regarding these aberrations in patients with AML, there is no consensus regarding their prognostic implications. To the best of our knowledge, the presence of Philadelphia chromosome, IDH1R132 and SNP rs11554137 in a single AML patient with good prognosis is a novel finding.

RESUMO

Exploiting solar energy for growing algal biomass in waters enriched with farm manures is a holistic method of waste management. The proposed cultivation strategy termed SAR'CENA ('Synergistic Algal Refinery for Circular Economy using Nutrient Analogues), involves integrated cultivation of microalga, Scenedesmus obliquus and marine macroalga, Ulva lactuca in litter to harness biorefinery products. From various litters tested, poultry litter manure (PLM) was most amenable for growth. The microalga yielded 410 ± 6.2 g·DW· m-2· d-1 of biomass with total nitrogen (TN) concentration of 70 mg·L-1 in the media, while the macroalgae yielded 334 ± 9.9 g DW m-2 d-1 of biomass with TN concentration of 17.5 mg·L-1. The nutrient uptake efficiency was observed to be >60% with uncompromised biomass composition. Thus, SAR'CENA is projected as an ideal farming solution incorporating efficient waste management and feedstock generation thereby establishing a circular economy towards clean energy.

RESUMO

This study is the first to explore the influence of incident light intensity on the photosynthetic responses under mixotrophic growth of microalga Asteracys sp. When grown mixotrophically, there was an enhanced regulation of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of the excited state of chlorophyll (Chl) a within the cells in response to white cool fluorescent high light (HL; 600 µmol photons m-2 s-1). Simultaneous measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production as malondialdehyde (MDA) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), an ROS scavenger, showed improved management of stress within mixotrophic cells under HL. Despite the observed decrease in quantum yield of photosynthesis measured through the Chl a fluorescence transient, no reduction in biomass accumulation was observed under HL for mixotrophy. However, biomass loss owing to photoinhibition was observed in cells grown phototrophically under the same irradiance. The measurements of dark recovery of NPQ suggested that "state transitions" may be partly responsible for regulating overall photosynthesis in Asteracys sp. The partitioning of photochemical and non-photochemical processes to sustain HL stress was analysed. Collectively, this study proposes that mixotrophy using glucose leads to a change in the photosynthetic abilities of Asteracys sp. while enhancing the adaptability of the alga to high irradiances.

RESUMO

Rectangular shaped α-Ce2S3 microrods have been grown with the aid of a facile, efficient, low cost and low temperature chemical bath deposition (CBD) approach in thin film form. Characterizations of α-Ce2S3 have been performed through structural, morphological and surface wettability studies. Intermixed rectangular microrods with lower contact angle provide a reduction in intrinsic resistance and effective ion diffusion path during electrochemical activities ensuring maximum utilization of the active electrode species. This leads to achieve a remarkable specific capacitance of 726 F/g at 2 mV/s scan rate with the excellent electrochemical stability of 93% at 2000 CV cycles. Efficient electrochemical findings exhibit excellent scope of α-Ce2S3 towards next-generation energy storage devices.

RESUMO

Ulva lactuca is regarded as a prospective energy crop for biorefinery owing to its affluent biochemical composition and high growth rate. In fast-growing macroalgae, biomass development strictly depends on external nitrogen pools. Additionally, nitrogen uptake rates and photosynthetic pigment content vary with type of nitrogen source and light conditions. However, the combined influence of nitrogen source and light intensity on photosynthesis is not widely studied. In present study, pale green phenotype of U. lactuca was obtained under high light (HL) condition when inorganic nitrogen (nitrate) in the media was substituted with organic nitrogen (urea). Further, pale green phenotype survived the saturating light intensities in contrast to the normal pigmented control which bleached in HL. Detailed analysis of biochemical composition and photosynthesis was performed to understand functional antenna size and photoprotection in pale green phenotype. Under HL, urea-grown cultures exhibited increased growth rate, carbohydrate and lipid content while substantial reduction in protein, chlorophyll content and PSII antenna size was observed. Further, in vivo slow and polyphasic chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence studies revealed reduction in excitation pressure on PSII along with low non-photochemical quenching thus, transmitting most of the absorbed energy into photochemistry. The results obtained could be correlated to previous report on cultivation of U. lactuca through saturating summer intensities (1000 µmole photons m-2 s-1) in urea based: poultry litter extract (PLE). Having proved critical role of urea in conforming photoprotection, the application PLE was authenticated for futuristic, sustainable and year-round biomass cultivation.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis can be differentiated from secondary bacterial peritonitis by the absence of a surgically treatable intra-abdominal source of infection. However, oftentimes this is unapparent and other clinical clues need to be sought after to make the right diagnosis. CASE: A 64-year-old woman was admitted because of three days of worsening diffuse abdominal pain and distention. She was morbidly obese and had a history of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) cirrhosis. She was febrile at 38.2 °C. Her abdomen was soft, diffusely tender and distended with a reducible umbilical hernia. Laboratory exam showed a white blood cell count 6700/mcl. Ascitic fluid analysis showed a yellow cloudy fluid with an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of 720 cells/m3, a total protein of 1.1 g/dl and a lactate dehydrogenase of 242 IU\l. She was given ceftriaxone and albumin. The ascitic fluid culture grew pansensitive Viridans streptococcus. The following days she continued to have fever and abdominal pain and a repeat paracentesis was done which showed improvement in her ANC. Abdominal computed tomography scan was done which showed hernia inflammation with a rim-enhancing fluid collection. Surgery was consulted who did a primary repair of the umbilical hernia and over the next few days the patient improved and was discharged stable. CONCLUSION: Persistence of signs and symptoms of peritonitis despite improvement in ascitic fluid analysis in cirrhotic patients treated for or early relapse of peritonitis with the same organism should prompt the physician to evaluate for secondary peritonitis and surgical management should be considered for potentially correctable sources.
