Hair products often contain chemicals like para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs); giving rise to concerns about the possible adverse effects such as hormonal disturbances and carcinogenicity. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the association between the use of different hair products and benign and malignant gynecological conditions. Studies were identified from three databases including PubMed, Embase, and Scopus, and evaluated in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A total of 17 English-language studies met the inclusion criteria. Associations of hair relaxer or hair dye use with breast and ovarian cancer were observed in at least one well-designed study, but these findings were not consistent across studies. Further sub-analysis showed 1.08 times (95 % CI: 1.01-1.15) increased risk of breast cancer in females with permanent hair dye use. Chang et al. reported strong association between uterine cancer risk and hair relaxer use (HR 1.8, 95 % CI: 1.12-2.88), with no observed association with hair dye use. Studies conducted by Wise et al. and James-Todd et al. for benign gynecological conditions; including uterine leiomyoma (IRR 1.17, 95 % CI: 1.06-1.30), early onset of menarche (RR 1.4, 95 % CI: 1.1-1.9), and decreased fecundability (FR 0.89, 95 % CI: 0.81-0.98) revealed positive associations with hair relaxer use, but these findings were based on small sample sizes. In summary, the available evidence regarding personal use of hair products and gynecological conditions is insufficient to determine whether a positive association exists.

Neuropathy has been described in significantly higher proportion of PD patients than in control subjects. This study ascertains the prevelance of neuropathy and its determinants in PD patients, in particular relation with nutritional status, along with impact of neuropathy on Quality of life. Methods: This was a hospital based observational cross-sectional study of PD patients attending the Neurology OPD of a tertiary care hospital. The prevalence and type of neuropathy was determined using the validated MNSI scale. The nutritional status was assessed using MNA score and PDQ-39 was used for assessing quality of life. Patients with and without neuropathy were compared to ascertain risk factors for neuropathy. Results: Twenty-four out of 93 PD patients (26%) had neuropathy and 12 (50%) out of them had painful neuropathy. Older patents and those who had longer duration of disease had higher prevalence of neuropathy. In addition there was significant correlation with malnutrition and neuropathy. 79% of patients with neuropathy had abnormal nutritional status. On comparison of patients with painful neuropathy as compared to those without pain, Vitamin B 12 levels were found to be low only in the former group. Conclusions: Our study shows that there is significant prevalence of neuropathy in PD patents that affects the quality of life of PD patients. Neuropathy in PD is disease dependent and is precipitated by malnutrition. Hence, neuropathy must be timely diagnosed and effective nutritional management may help to improve the patient's quality of life.

As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, manually enhanced ad-hoc solutions have helped the physical space designers and decision makers to cope with the dynamic nature of space planning. Due to the unpredictable nature by which the pandemic is unfolding, the standard operating procedures also change, and the protocols for physical interaction require continuous reconsideration. Consequently, the development of an appropriate technological solution to address the current challenge of reconfiguring common physical environments with prescribed physical distancing measures is much needed. To do this, we propose a design optimization methodology which takes the dimensions, as well as the constraints and other necessary requirements of a given physical space to yield optimal redesign solutions on the go. The methodology we propose here utilizes the solution to the well-known mathematical circle packing problem, which we define as a constrained mathematical optimization problem. The resulting optimization problem is solved subject to a given set of parameters and constraints - corresponding to the requirements on the social distancing criteria between people and the imposed constraints on the physical spaces such as the position of doors, windows, walkways and the variables related to the indoor airflow pattern. Thus, given the dimensions of a physical space and other essential requirements, the solution resulting from the automated optimization algorithm can suggest an optimal set of redesign solutions from which a user can pick the most feasible option. We demonstrate our automated optimal design methodology by way of a number of practical examples, and we discuss how this framework can be further taken forward as a design platform that can be implemented practically.

A novel pulsed neutron imaging technique based on the finite element method is used to reconstruct the residual strain within a polycrystalline material from Bragg edge strain images. This technique offers the possibility of a nondestructive analysis of strain fields with a high spatial resolution. The finite element approach used to reconstruct the strain uses the least square method constrained by the conditions of equilibrium. This inclusion of equilibrium makes the problem well-posed. The procedure is developed and verified by validating for a cantilevered beam problem. It is subsequently demonstrated by reconstructing the strain from experimental data for a ring-and-plug sample, measured at the spallation neutron source RADEN at J-PARC in Japan. The reconstruction is validated by comparison with conventional constant wavelength strain measurements on the KOWARI diffractometer at ANSTO in Australia. It is also shown that the addition of a Tikhonov regularisation scheme further improves the reconstruction.
