Background: Although preliminary studies support the roles of unhealthy parenting styles and maladaptive coping styles in increasing rates of disturbed eating attitudes and behaviors (EAB) and clinically significant feeding and eating disorders (FED), underlying mechanisms have not been well-recognized. This study aims to investigate the factors associated with disturbed EAB and the mediating roles of overcompensation and avoidance coping styles in the relationship between different types of parenting styles and disturbed EAB among patients with FED. Methods: A total of 102 patients with FED in Zahedan, Iran, participating in this cross-sectional study (from April to March 2022) completed a sociodemographic information form and self-report measures of parenting styles, maladaptive coping styles, and EAB. Model 4 of Hayes' PROCESS macro in SPSS was employed to identify and explain the mechanism or process that underlies an observed relationship between study variables. Results: The results showed that authoritarian parenting style, overcompensation and avoidance coping styles, and female gender might be related to disturbed EAB. The overall hypothesis that overcompensation and avoidance coping styles mediated the effect of fathers' and mothers' authoritarian parenting styles on disturbed EAB was also supported. Conclusions: Our findings highlighted the necessity of evaluating particular unhealthy parenting styles and maladaptive coping styles as the important possible risk factors in the development and maintenance of higher level of disturbance in EAB among patients with FED. However, more research is needed to explore individual, family, and peer risk factors for disturbed EAB among these patients.

BACKGROUND: Protective helmets may reduce the risk of death and head injury in motorcycle collisions. However, there remains a large gap in knowledge regarding the effectiveness of different types of helmets in preventing injuries. OBJECTIVE: To explore and evaluate the effectiveness of different types of motorcycle helmets; that is the association between different helmet types and the incidence and severity of head, neck, and facial injuries among motorcyclists. Also, to explore the effect of different helmet types on riders. METHODS: A systematic search of different scientific databases was conducted from 1965 to April 2019. A scoping review was performed on the included articles. Eligible articles were included regarding defined criteria. Study characteristics, helmet types, fixation status, retention system, the prevention of injury or reduction of its severity were extracted. RESULTS: A total of 137 studies were included. There was very limited evidence for the better protection of full-face helmets from head and facial injury compared to open-face and half-coverage helmets. There was however scarce evidence for the superiority of a certain helmet type over others in terms of protection from neck injury. The retention system and the fixation status of helmets were two important factors affecting the risk of head and brain injury in motorcyclists. Helmets could also affect and limit the riders in terms of vision, hearing, and ventilation. Multiple solutions have been discussed to mitigate these effects. CONCLUSION: Full-face helmets may protect head and face in motorcycle riders more than open-face and half-coverage helmets, but there is not enough evidence for better neck protection among these three helmet types. Helmets can affect the rider's vision, hearing, and ventilation. When designing a helmet, all of these factors should be taken into account.

BACKGROUND: One of the recommended treatments for disorders associated with the lower extremity venous insufficiency is the application of external mechanical compression. Compression stockings and elastic bandages are widely used for the purpose of compression therapy and are usually designed to exert a specified value or range of compression on the leg. However, the leg deforms under external compression, which can lead to undesirable variations in the amount of compression applied by the compression bandages. In this paper, the use of an active compression bandage (ACB), whose compression can be regulated through an electrical signal, is investigated. The ACB is based on the use of dielectric elastomer actuators. This paper specifically investigates, via both analytical and non-linear numerical simulations, the potential pressure the ACB can apply when the compliancy of the human leg is taken into account. The work underpins the need to account for the compressibility of the leg when designing compression garments for lower extremity venous insufficiency. METHODS: A mathematical model is used to simulate the volumetric change of a calf when compressed. Suitable parameters for this calf model are selected from the literature where the calf, from ankle to knee, is divided into six different regions. An analytical electromechanical model of the ACB, which considers its compliancy as a function of its pre-stretch and electricity applied, is used to predict the ACB's behavior. Based on these calf and ACB analytical models, a simulation is performed to investigate the interaction between the ACB and the human calf with and without an electrical stimulus applied to the ACB. This simulation is validated by non-linear analysis performed using a software based on the finite element method (FEM). In all simulations, the ACB's elastomer is stretched to a value in the range between 140 and 220 % of its initial length. RESULTS: Using data from the literature, the human calf model, which is examined in this work, has different compliancy in its different regions. For example, when a 28.5 mmHg (3.8 kPa) of external compression is applied to the entire calf, the ankle shows a 3.7 % of volume change whereas the knee region undergoes a 2.7 % of volume change. The paper presents the actual pressure in the different regions of the calf for different values of the ACB's stretch ratio when it is either electrically activated or not activated, and when compliancy of the leg is either considered or not considered. For example, results of the performed simulation show that about 10 % variation in compression in the ankle region is expected when the ACB initially applies 6 kPa and the compressibility of the calf is first considered and then not considered. Such a variation reduces to 5 % when the initial pressure applied by the ACB reduced by half. CONCLUSIONS: Comparison with non-linear FEM simulations show that the analytical models used in this work can closely estimate interaction between an active compression bandage and a human calf. In addition, compliancy of the leg should not be neglected when either designing a compression band or predicting the compressive force it can exert. The methodology proposed in this work can be extended to other types of elastic compression bandages and garments for biomedical applications.
