RESUMO

Developing cost-effective and high-performance catalyst systems for dry reforming of methane (DRM) is crucial for producing hydrogen (H2) sustainably. Herein, we investigate using iron (Fe) as a promoter and major alumina support in Ni-based catalysts to improve their DRM performance. The addition of iron as a promotor was found to add reducible iron species along with reducible NiO species, enhance the basicity and induce the deposition of oxidizable carbon. By incorporating 1 wt.% Fe into a 5Ni/10ZrAl catalyst, a higher CO2 interaction and formation of reducible "NiO-species having strong interaction with support" was observed, which led to an ∼80% H2 yield in 420 min of Time on Stream (TOS). Further increasing the Fe content to 2wt% led to the formation of additional reducible iron oxide species and a noticeable rise in H2 yield up to 84%. Despite the severe weight loss on Fe-promoted catalysts, high H2 yield was maintained due to the proper balance between the rate of CH4 decomposition and the rate of carbon deposit diffusion. Finally, incorporating 3 wt.% Fe into the 5Ni/10ZrAl catalyst resulted in the highest CO2 interaction, wide presence of reducible NiO-species, minimum graphitic deposit and an 87% H2 yield. Our findings suggest that iron-promoted zirconia-alumina-supported Ni catalysts can be a cheap and excellent catalytic system for H2 production via DRM.

The newly discovered programmed iron-dependent necrosis, ferroptosis, is a novel pathway that is controlled by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation and cellular redox changes. It can be triggered intrinsically by low antioxidant enzyme activity or extrinsically by blocking amino acid transporters or activating iron transporters. The induction of ferroptosis involves the activation of specific proteins, suppression of transporters, and increased endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress (a condition in which the ER, a crucial organelle involved in protein folding and processing, becomes overwhelmed by an accumulation of misfolded or unfolded proteins. This situation disrupts the normal functioning of the ER, leading to a cellular stress response known as the unfolded protein response), leading to lipid peroxidation byproduct accumulation and toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are highly reactive molecules derived from diatomic oxygen and include various forms such as superoxide (O2⁻), hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Ferroptosis is closely associated with signaling molecules in lung cancer, including epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α), and P53, and is regulated by epigenetic factors such as microRNAs (miRNAs). miRNAs are small non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression by binding to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to translational repression or degradation. Several miRNAs have been found to modulate ferroptosis by targeting key genes involved in iron metabolism, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant defense pathways. The research on ferroptosis has expanded to target its role in lung cancer treatment and resistance prevention. This review encapsulates the significance of ferroptosis in lung cancer. Understanding the mechanisms and implications of ferroptosis in lung cancer cells may lead to targeted therapies exploiting cancer cell vulnerabilities to ferroptosis Also, improving treatment outcomes, and overcoming resistance.

INTRODUCTION: This cross-sectional study assesses the prevalence of metronidazole resistance-associated mutations and virulence genotypes in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) strains isolated from the Egyptian population. H. pylori infection is a significant public health concern, with antibiotic resistance challenging its eradication. METHODS: Gastric biopsy samples were collected from symptomatic patients referred for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at selected healthcare facilities. The study included 250 participants with symptoms suggestive of H. pylori infection and aged 18 years or older. Biopsy samples were obtained using standard endoscopic techniques, and H. pylori strains were isolated and identified in the laboratory. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was conducted using standard methods. Molecular analysis, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing, was performed to identify metronidazole resistance-associated mutations (rdxA and frxA) and virulence genotypes (cagA and vacA). RESULTS: Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that 43.6 % of the isolates were resistant to metronidazole, while 11.8 %, 4.5 %, and 55.4 % were resistant to clarithromycin, amoxicillin, and levofloxacin. Molecular analysis identified rdxA and frxA mutations in 36.3 % and 31.8 % of the isolates, respectively, indicating metronidazole resistance-associated mutations. Additionally, 60.0 % of the isolates were positive for the cagA gene, and 80.0 % had the vacA s1 type, both associated with increased virulence. A significant association was found between metronidazole resistance and the presence of cagA gene, vacA s1 type, rdxA mutation, and frxA mutation. Statistical analysis revealed associations between specific mutations and virulence genotypes with respective odds ratios, indicating higher likelihoods of metronidazole resistance in isolates exhibiting these genetic characteristics. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the prevalence of metronidazole resistance and the association between specific mutations and virulence genotypes in H. pylori strains isolated from the Egyptian population. The findings underscore the importance of monitoring antibiotic resistance patterns and understanding the genetic determinants of virulence in H. pylori for effective management and treatment strategies.

Infections originating from pathogenic microorganisms can significantly impede the natural wound-healing process. To address this obstacle, innovative bio-active nanomaterials have been developed to enhance antibacterial capabilities. This study focuses on the preparation of nanocomposites from thermally reduced graphene oxide and zinc oxide (TRGO/ZnO). The hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize these nanocomposites, and their physicochemical properties were comprehensively characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) techniques. Subsequently, the potential of TRGO/ZnO nanocomposites as bio-active materials against wound infection-causing bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli, was evaluated. Furthermore, the investigated samples show disrupted bacterial biofilm formation. A reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay was conducted to investigate the mechanism of nanocomposite inhibition against bacteria and for further in-vivo determination of antimicrobial activity. The MTT assay was performed to ensure the safety and biocompatibility of nanocomposite. The results suggest that TRGO/ZnO nanocomposites have the potential to serve as effective bio-active nanomaterials for combating pathogenic microorganisms present in wounds.

As of the 7th of July 2024, 775,754,322 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 7,053,902 deaths worldwide, had been reported to the WHO (World Health Organization). Nevertheless, untill the 15th of July 2024, a total of 13,578,710,228 vaccine doses had been administered, with almost no country spared from COVID-19 attacks. The pathophysiology of this virus is complicated, and several symptoms require a deep understanding of the actual mechanisms. It is unclear why some patients develop severe symptoms while others do not, although literature suggests a role for vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the infection or in ameliorating the severity of symptoms. The mechanism of action of vitamin D and vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is well understood. VDD is associated with increased hospitalization of severely ill patients and increased levels of COVID-19-caused mortality. Recent studies suggest that vitamin D levels and genetic variations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene significantly impact the severity and outcomes of COVID-19, especially in the infections caused by Delta and Omicron variants. Furthermore, VDD causes immune system dysregulation upon infection with SARS-CoV-2, indicating that vitamin D sufficiency is crucial in fighting against COVID-19 infection. The therapeutic effect of vitamin D raises interest in its potential role as a prophylactic and treatment adjunct. We evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D and its ability to enhance the efficacy of new antiviral drugs like molnupiravir and paxlovid against SARS-CoV-2. This review discusses the role of vitamin D sufficiency and VDD in COVID-19 initiation and progression, emphasizing the molecular mechanisms by which vitamin D exerts its actions as a proactive step for the next pandemic. However, there is still no clear evidence of vitamin D's impact on prevention and treatment, leading to contradictory findings. Therefore, large-scale randomized trials are required to reach a definitive conclusion. A bibliometric analysis of publications related to vitamin D, immunity, and COVID-19 revealed a significant increase in research activity in this area, particularly in 2020-2024, underscoring the growing recognition of vitamin D's potential role in the context of the pandemic.

This work addresses the problem of converting waste methane, a significant greenhouse gas, using customized nickel-zeolite catalysts to produce profitable syngas. The investigation employs 5 wt % of Ni on various zeolite supports with Si/Al ratios ranging from 13 to 25. Comprehensive characterization methods, including temperature-programmed reduction, N2 adsorption-desorption, and X-ray diffraction, were used to identify critical structural characteristics that greatly impact the catalyst's performance. The study indicates that the reducibility and basicity of the catalyst, the type of zeolite support, and the kind of carbon deposits formed during the reaction at 800 °C all influence the efficiency of methane conversion to syngas. The best catalyst was found to be 5Ni-Z3, which at 800 °C produced high conversion rates of carbon dioxide (60%) and methane (50%). Lastly, the response surface methodology, in conjunction with numerical simulation, was used to determine the best operating settings for maximizing syngas production with the 5Ni-Z3 catalyst. Reaction temperature, space velocity, and the methane-to-carbon dioxide feed ratio were considered in this analysis. With a methane conversion rate exceeding 92%, a carbon dioxide conversion rate exceeding 90%, and a hydrogen-to-carbon monoxide ratio of 1.00, the catalyst produced experimental results very similar to the SRM predictions when the reaction was conducted at conditions close to the predicted values [temperature around 845 °C, space velocity around 22,000 mL/(h·gcat), and feed ratio close to 0.94]. The effectiveness of the identified operating conditions for the dry reforming process is validated by the near alignment of expected and experimental outcomes.

Introduction The importance of radiological technology in healthcare is indisputable in diagnosing and treating many diseases, yet undergraduate radiology education globally remains inadequate. Worldwide, students express dissatisfaction with radiology education, underscoring the need for improvement in this aspect. Saudi Arabia's medical system lacks a unified radiology curriculum, necessitating robust curriculum development, which should be addressed by the Council of Deans of Saudi Medical Schools. This study aims to assess Saudi medical students' perceptions of radiology education. Methods This is an observational cross-sectional study conducted in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) among undergraduate medical students from King Faisal University (KFU) and Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU). The study used an online survey to assess medical students' perspectives regarding the radiology curriculum, the adequacy of the students' exposure to various imaging modalities, and their confidence in evaluating radiological images. Subjective parameters were measured using a four-point Likert scale, and the results are presented as percentages of students. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 29 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results The current paper encompassed 845 participants, revealing a gender distribution of 56.7% (n = 479) female and 43.3% (n = 366) male. Notably, 39.2% (n = 331) and 29.6% (n = 250) aimed for medical and surgical clinician roles, respectively. By contrast, 27.8% (n = 235) expressed uncertainty about their future plans, and only 3.4% (n = 29) intended to pursue radiology as a future career. In evaluating students' perspectives on the radiology curriculum, more than half of the students (59.4%, n = 502) stated that the amount of radiology education included in their curriculum was inadequate, while 35.7% (n = 302) stated that it was just right, and only 4.9% (n = 41) stated that it was too much. A substantially larger proportion of KFU students (65.2%, n = 334) perceived their clinical exposure to be inadequate compared to IAU students (50.5%, n = 168). Furthermore, a larger percentage of IAU students (46.8%, n = 156) reported "just right" exposure levels compared to KFU students (28.5%, n = 146). This disparity is statistically significant (p < 0.001). Our study demonstrated that X-ray imaging is the most encountered modality during clinical rotations, with 87.2% (n = 737) of students reporting exposure, followed by CT scans (75.2%, n = 636). Conclusion The majority of Saudi medical students in the Eastern Province reported an "inadequate" level of exposure to radiology. By identifying shortcomings and inadequacies in the current system, the research may provide a foundation for future improvements, ensuring that medical graduates in the Eastern Province possess the requisite knowledge for competent and safe clinical practice.

Background/Objectives: Intensive care unit (ICU) e-referrals are an important indicator for exploring potential deficiencies in critical care resources. This study aimed to examine the epidemiology and patterns of ICU e-referrals across all regions of Saudi Arabia during the COVID-19 pandemic using routinely collected data from April 2020 to December 2021. Methods: This descriptive epidemiological study analyzed data from the Saudi Medical Appointments and Referrals Centre (SMARC). This study reveals novel regional ICU e-referral patterns for critical cases using national unique digital health data, adding insights beyond the existing literature. Variables included age, sex, referral timing, reason, specialty, and region of origin. Descriptive statistics and mapping of administrative areas were performed based on e-referral request rates per 10,000 population. Results: During the study period, 36,619 patients had ICU e-referral requests. The mean age was 54.28 years, with males constituting 64.81% of requests. Out-of-scope e-referrals comprised 71.44% of requests. Referrals related to medical specialties, such as cardiology and pulmonology, were the most common (62.48%). Referral patterns showed peaks in July-August 2020 and May 2021. The Northern Border and Albaha areas had the highest request rates per population, potentially reflecting a higher proportion of severe cases requiring ICU-level care compared to other regions. Conclusions: The temporal pattern and geographic distribution of ICU e-referrals mirrored previously reported critical COVID-19 cases in Saudi Arabia. Preventive measures and vaccination programs contributed to a significant decline in ICU e-referral requests, suggesting a positive impact on controlling severe COVID-19 cases. Population-adjusted analysis revealed regional disparities, highlighting the importance of considering population size in healthcare resource management and policy.

Pituitary adenomas (PAs) are an array of tumors originating from the pituitary gland. PAs are sorted as functional or nonfunctional according to their hormonal activity and classified according to size into microadenomas and macroadenomas. Still, the cellular events that trigger the transformations in pituitary neoplasms are not fully understood, and the current classification methods do not precisely predict clinical behavior. A rising number of researches have emphasized the role of miRNAs, that drawn more attention as oncogenic molecules or tumor suppressors. The etiopathological mechanisms of PAs include multiple molecular cascades that are influenced by different miRNAs. miRNAs control the cell cycle control, pro- or antiapoptotic processes, and tumor invasion and metastasis. miRNAs offer a novel perspective on tumor features and behaviors and might be valuable in prognostication and therapeutic plans. In pituitary adenomas, miRNAs showed a specific expression pattern depending on their size, cell origin, remission, and treatments. Screening miRNA expression patterns is promising to monitor and evaluate recurrence, as well as to investigate the efficacy of radiation and chemotherapy for PAs exhibiting aggressive behavior. Thus, the current review investigated the interplay of the miRNAs' pivotal role in offering new opportunities to translate these innovative epigenetic tools into healthcare applications.

Objective: Assessment of the efficacy of Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS) versus Desmopressin in treating Primary Mono-symptomatic Nocturnal Enuresis (PMNE). Patients and methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted at the Urology department of Abo Elreesh pediatric hospital, Cairo University on 80 children, aged between 5 and 13 years old, diagnosed to have PMNE between June 2020 and November 2020. Children were divided into two equal groups; those who underwent PTNS (as one session per week for 12 weeks) (Group A) and those who received Desmopressin 0.2 mg. single evening dose for 12 weeks (Group B). Both groups were constructed to adhere to behavioral therapy and were statistically evaluated regarding the frequency of nocturnal enuresis (NE) before, after treatment, and after 1 month of follow-up. Results: Both groups showed statistically significant improvement in the frequency of NE before and after treatment (p < 0.001), but there were no statistically significant differences between them (p = 0.763). There was a statistically significant relapse of NE frequency after 1 month of follow-up after completion of treatment in both groups (p < 0.001), with no statistically significant differences between the two groups (p = 0.075). Conclusion: Posterior tibial nerve stimulation and Desmopressin are viable treatment options for children with primary mono-symptomatic nocturnal enuresis. However, relapse in some responders with time suggests the need for maintenance therapy.

This experiment was designed to explore how different types of probiotics affect the growth, carcass traits, and seasonal variations in growing New Zealand White rabbits (NZW). Two parallel experiments using the same strain of NZW during winter and summer, each alone from 5 to 13 weeks of age. Each experiment uses a total of 125 unsexed rabbits. These rabbits are separated into 5 groups of 25 rabbits each. Each group has five replicates, with five rabbits in every replicate. In each experiment, 1st group acting as the control group did not receive any probiotics. The 2nd was given a dose of 1 ml of Bifidobacterium bifidum, the 3rd received a dose of 1 ml of Lactobacillus acidophilus, and the 4th was treated with a 1 ml blend of both Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus, and 5th group was treated with 1 ml of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Results indicated that the Bifidobacterium bifidum group had the best live body weight (LBW) values and daily weight gain (DWG). Meanwhile, during summer, the Lactobacillus acidophilus group had the best feed conversion ratio (FCR) and performance index (PI) values. Also, growing rabbits fed Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifiduim had significantly increased carcass traits during the summer and winter seasons. Furthermore, seasonal changes indicated that the Bifidobacterium bifiduim group improved LBW, DWG, and PI during summer than winter. So, it could be concluded that using Bifidobacterium bifidum can enhance rabbit growth by improving feed utilization and carcass traits, making it an effective addition to hot weather diets.

VEGFR2 inhibition has been established as a therapeutic approach for managing cancer. A series of curcumin-based analogues were designed, synthesized, and screened for their anticancer activity against MCF-7 and HepG-2 cell lines and WISH normal cells. Compounds 4b, 4d, 4e, and 4f showed potent cytotoxicity against MCF-7 with IC50 values of 0.49, 0.14, 0.01, and 0.32 µM, respectively, compared to curcumin (IC50 = 13.8 µM) and sorafenib (IC50 = 2.13 µM). Interestingly, compound 4e, the most active compound, exhibited potent VEGFR2 inhibition with an IC50 value of 11.6 nM (96.5% inhibition) compared to sorafenib with an IC50 value of 30 nM (94.8% inhibition). Additionally, compound 4e significantly induced apoptotic cell death in MCF-7 cells by 41.1% compared to a control group (0.8%), halting cell division during the G2/M phase by 39.8% compared to the control (21.7%). Molecular docking-coupled dynamics simulations highlighted the bias of the VEGFR2 pocket towards compound 4e compared to other synthesized compounds. Predicting superior binding affinities and relevant interactions with the pocket's key residues recapitulated in vitro findings towards higher inhibition activity for compound 4e. Furthermore, compound 4e with adequate pharmacokinetic and drug-likeness profiles in terms of ADME and safety characteristics can serve as a promising clinical candidate for future lead optimization and development. Notably, 4e-Fe2O3-humic acid NPs exhibited potent cytotoxicity with IC50 values of 2.41 and 13.4 ng mL-1 against MCF-7 and HepG-2 cell lines, respectively. Hence, compound 4e and its Fe2O3-humic acid-NPs could be further developed as promising anti-breast cancer agents.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is an effective management method for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). The P wave in the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) represents atrial depolarisation. This study aims to utilise the P wave to predict PVI outcomes for PAF. METHODS: This single-centre retrospective study aimed to predict PVI outcomes using P wave parameters. It included 211 consecutive patients with first PVI for PAF between 2018 and 2019 and targeted the pulmonary veins (PVs). Procedure success was defined by freedom of ECG-documented AF at 12 months. Digital 12-lead ECGs with 1-50 hertz bandpass filters were monitored before the procedure. Corrected P wave duration (PWDc), P wave amplitude (PWV), P wave dispersion (PWDisp), intra-atrial block (IAB), P wave area (PWA), and P wave terminal force in V1 (PTFV1) were measured before ablation and correlated with the outcomes. RESULTS: Successful PVI occurred in 154 patients (73%). Demographics were similar between both arms. P wave parameters correlated with PVI failure included increased PWDc in all leads except for lead III, aVR, and V3, decreased PWV in lead I (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.7, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.53-0.95), lead II (HR: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.22-0.65), aVL (HR: 0.58, 95% CI: 0.22-0.98), and aVF (HR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.58-0.87), decreased PWA in lead I (HR: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.21-0.76), lead II (HR: 0.48, 95% CI: 0.34-0.87), aVL (HR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.45-0.96), and aVF (HR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.32-0.89), and the presence of IAB (HR: 2, 95% CI: 1.4-4.2, p = 0.02). PWDisp and PTFV1 were not correlated with PVI outcome. CONCLUSIONS: PWDc, PWA, PWV, and IAB are valuable predictors for PVI outcome for PAF at 12 months.

Superovulation is a crucial step in assisted reproductive technology that involves the administration of gonadotrophins. Repeated superovulations result in severe ovarian damage. The present study investigated the effect of in vivo administration of lycopene on ovarian damage induced by four successive cycles of superovulation. Superovulated mice were simultaneously administered intraperitoneally with saline (R4) or 5 mg/kg lycopene (R4-Lyc). The evaluated parameters were the count of different types of follicles, expression of ovarian antioxidant- and apoptosis-related genes, and serum concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, and inhibin-B. Increased numbers of healthy follicles and a decreased count of atretic follicles were observed in mice of the R4-Lyc group compared to those of the R4 group. Moreover, significantly higher mRNA levels of Sod3, Cat, and Nrf2 and lower mRNA levels of Keap1, Tnf, Nfkb, and Casp3, together with decreased H2O2 concentrations and increased total antioxidant capacity, were detected in the ovaries of lycopene-treated mice. Regarding serum reproductive hormones, elevated concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, and inhibin-B were evident in lycopene-administered mice. The present study reports a significant role of lycopene in alleviating the ovarian damage induced by multiple hormonal superstimulations, which could help to improve the outcomes of in vitro embryo production.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance has emerged as a major global health threat, necessitating the urgent development of new antimicrobials through innovative methods to combat the rising prevalence of resistant microbes. With this view, we developed three novel nanoconjugates using microbial natural pigment for effective application against certain pathogenic microbes. RESULTS: A natural red pigment (RP) extracted from the endophyte Monascus ruber and gamma rays were applied to synthesize RP-ZnO, RP-CuO, and RP-MgO nanoconjugates. The synthesized nanoconjugates were characterized by different techniques to study their properties. The antimicrobial potential of these nanoconjugates was evaluated. Moreover, the antibiofilm, protein leakage, growth curve, and UV light irradiation effect of the synthesized nanoconjugates were also studied. Our results confirmed the nano-size, shape, and stability of the prepared conjugates. RP-ZnO, RP-CuO, and RP-MgO nanoconjugates showed broad antimicrobial potential against the tested bacterial and fungal pathogens. Furthermore, the RP-ZnO nanoconjugate possessed the highest activity, followed by the RP-CuO against the tested microbes. The highest % inhibition of biofilm formation by the RP-ZnO nanoconjugate. Membrane leakage of E. coli and S. aureus by RP-ZnO nanoconjugate was more effective than RP-MgO and RP-CuO nanoconjugates. Finally, UV light irradiation intensified the antibiotic action of the three nanoconjugates and RP-ZnO potential was greater than that of the RP-MgO, and RP-CuO nanoconjugates. CONCLUSION: These findings pave the way for exploiting the synthesized nanoconjugates as potential materials in biomedical applications, promoting natural, green, and eco-friendly approaches.

BACKGROUNDS AND AIM: Exposure to pesticides has been proposed as a potential contributor to adverse pregnancy outcomes, possibly through the induction of inflammation, oxidative stress, and disruption of endocrine functions. Nevertheless, the definitive link between prenatal pesticide exposure and the risk of Spontaneous Abortion (SAB) remains uncertain. The objective of this systematic review is to explore and analyze the existing evidence regarding the link between pesticide exposure and the risk of SAB. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic literature search was carried out on PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus from their inception until February 2024 to identify relevant studies exploring the potential link between pesticide exposure and SAB. The frequency of SAB events and the total number of patients in each group were used to calculate the Relative Risk (RR) using the Mantel-Haenszel random-effects model. Heterogeneity among the studies was evaluated by visually inspecting the forest plot and performing the Chi-square test and I2 tests. We also used RevMan version 5.4 for Windows for the analysis. We also used the NIH tool to assess the quality of the included studies. RESULTS: The initial database search yielded 2121 results, with 1525 articles remaining after removing duplicates. After screening, 29 articles were eligible for full-text review, and 18 studies (Four case-control, eleven cohorts, three cross-sectional) were included in the meta-analysis, comprising 439,097 participants. All included studies evaluated the primary outcome, SAB. Most of the included studies were cross-sectional in design, and pesticide exposure was primarily assessed through questionnaires administered to patients. We found that most of our observational studies, precisely 12 out of the total, were deemed fair quality. Four studies were rated poor quality, while only two received a good quality rating. The analysis demonstrated a significant 41 % increase in SAB risk among pregnant women exposed to pesticides compared to pregnant women without exposure to pesticides (RR= 1.41, 95 % CI; [1.10, 1.80], P= 0.006). CONCLUSION: Our systematic review and meta-analysis revealed a significant 41 % increase in the risk of SAB among pregnant women exposed to pesticides. However, it is essential to acknowledge the limitations of the current evidence: potential publication bias and the inability to establish causality. Moving forward, future research should focus on longitudinal studies, mechanistic insights, and risk reduction strategies. In summary, our findings underscore the urgency of public health measures to protect maternal and fetal health in pesticide-exposed areas. Rigorous research and preventive strategies are crucial to mitigate adverse outcomes.

This experiment examined how adding mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) to the diet affected fertility, hatching rates, egg production, carcass characteristics, cost-effectiveness, and immune function in laying hens. One hundred and twenty Mandarah chickens (30 hens and 3 roosters per group) were randomly chosen between 34 and 50 wk old and divided into four groups. The first group was the control group, which was given just the basal diet. The basal diet was given to the second, third, and fourth experimental groups along with three different levels of MOS (0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 g/kg diet, respectively). Results found that hens fed MOS at various levels laid eggs at a significantly higher rate, enhanced egg number, egg mass and feed conversion ratio than the control group (P < 0.05). MOS seemed to improve carcass quality. The best results for egg quality (Haugh unit) and testosterone levels were seen with a dose of 0.5 g/kg of MOS compared to the control birds (P < 0.05). All MOS levels led to higher estradiol-17ß (E2) levels and better economic efficiency (EE). MOS also improved the hens' immune systems as compared to the control group. Hens-fed MOS had significantly greater levels of antibodies against Influenza viruses (H9N2) and Infectious Bronchitis Virus (P < 0.05). Also, the spleen and thymus gland, both crucial immune system components, were slightly larger (P < 0.05). It's important to note that fertility rates, hatchability, and embryo mortality rates remained similar across all groups. So, our findings suggest that incorporating MOS into the birds' diet enhances their productivity, strengthens their immune system, improves EE, and contributes to the overall health of the hens.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia worldwide. Data regarding readmission for new congestive heart failure (CHF) following index admission for AF in the developing world are poorly described. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to assess the rate, predictors, and outcomes of 120-day CHF readmission after index admission for AF in Syria. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study collected all adult patients without known CHF who had an index admission with AF to Latakia's tertiary center between June 2021-December 2023. Data were taken from patients' medical notes. The primary outcome included readmission with incident CHF within 120 of index discharge, and secondary outcomes included predictors and outcomes of these CHF readmissions. RESULTS: A total of 660 patients were included in the final analysis, of which 69 (11.7%) were readmitted with new CHF within 120 days of index discharge. Readmitted patients had higher median age (58 vs 70 years, p < .001). Factors that independently increased 120-day CHF incidence were age ≥60 years (HR: 9.8, 95% CI: 4.8-23.6, p < .001), diabetes mellitus (DM) (HR:2.9, 95% CI:1.7-4.9, p < .001), valvular heart disease (VHD) (HR:1.7, 95% CI:1.04-2.78, p = .047), and hypertension (HR:2.5, 95% CI:1.5-4, p < .001). Inpatient mortality occurred in six readmitted patients (9%). LVEF <40% (HR:6.7, 95% CI: 24.31, p = .01) and DM (HR:7.2, 95% CI: 1.9-33, p = .004) were independently associated with inpatient mortality. CONCLUSION: Hospitalization for new CHF was common in Syrian patients discharged with AF. The clinical predictors of incident CHF emphasize the importance of integrated management of lifestyle risk factors and common comorbidities in AF patients to optimize outcomes in resource-depleted communities.

This study presents a novel approach to manage vaginal infections due to Candidiasis, utilizing a novel silver secnidazole nano-hybrid emulsion (Ag-Secn-NHE)-based probiotics and free Ag-Secn-NHE. Ag-Secn-NHE was prepared by simple homogenization‒ultrasonication technique and validated by using a ultraviolet‒visible scan, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potential. Saccharomyces cerevisiae (RCMB 002Y001) is the most effective probiotic-producing organism that demonstrates significant effects when combined with Ag-Secn-NHE. Ag-Secn-NHE-based probiotics showed significant antifungal effect compared to free Ag-Secn-NHE, silver nitrate, silver nanoparticles, secnidazole, secnidazole nanoemulsion, and commercial vaginal wash against multidrug-resistant vaginal pathogens. The highest inhibitory effect was achieved with Ag-Secn-NHE-based probiotic against Candida auris, Candida albicans, and Cryptococcus neoformans with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) 0.625 ± 0.002, 0.00625:1.25 ± 0.012 and 0.00625:1.25 ± 0.032 mg/mL, respectively, in comparison with Ag-Secn-NHE that show MIC at 0.00625:1.25 ± 0.612, 0.0125:2.5 ± 0.812, and 0.0125:2.5 ± 0.112 mg/mL (Ag:Secn). Ag-Secn-NHE-based- probiotic show minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) at range from 2.5 to 20 mg/mL, wherever free Ag-Secn-NHE show MFC range from 5 to >20 mg/mL. Additionally, Ag-Secn-NHE-based probiotics have 75% inhibition of biofilm formation against C. auris and 60% inhibition of biofilm formation against both Cryptococcus neoformans and C. albicans in comparison with free Ag-Secn-NHE. Time-kill curves showed that the antifungal effect of Ag-Secn-NHE-based probiotics was fungistatic at 2MIC value after 4 h and after 16 h for Ag-Secn-NHE. TEM photographs showed that C. auris cells treated with Ag-Secn-NHE-based probiotic formula revealed severe deformations and distored ultrastructural changes. furthermore, results indicated that the Gamma radiation up to 15 kGy increases production of Ag-Secn-NHE in comparison with non-irradiated one.

BACKGROUND: Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have gained much interest recently for being efficient probes. Their cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and unique photocatalytic activities made them distinctive alternatives to other luminescent approaches like fluorescent dyes and luminous derivatization. Meanwhile, delafloxacin (DLF) is a recently approved antibacterial medicine. DLF has been authorized for the treatment of soft-tissue and skin infections as well as pneumonia. Therefore, new eco-friendly, cost-effective, and sensitive tools are needed its estimation in different matrices. RESULTS: In the proposed study, green copper and nitrogen carbon dots (Cu-N@CDs) were synthesized from a green source (plum juice with copper sulphate). Cu-N@CQDs were then characterized using multiple tools including X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS), FTIR and UV-VIS spectroscopy, Zeta potential measurements, High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and fluorescence spectroscopy. After gradually adding DLF, the developed quantum dots' fluorescence was significantly enhanced within the working range of 0.5-100.0 ng mL-1. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.08 and 0.27 ng mL-1, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed method ranged from 96.00 to 99.12 % in recovery%, when recovered from milk and plasma samples. SIGNIFICANCE: Cu-N@CDs were utilized and validated for selectively determining DLF in several matrices including pharmaceutical forms, human plasma and in milk samples using spectrofluorimetric technique. The bio-analytical method is simple and could be used in content uniformity testing as well as in therapeutic drug monitoring in human plasma.
