RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Anemia is a pathological condition characterized by reduced oxygen bioavailability and/or changes in hematological parameters. This study investigated the anti-anemic activities of Carica papaya (CP) phytoconstituents in aluminium-chloride-induced anemic rats. METHOD: Twenty-seven rats were randomized into nine groups of three rats as follows; group 1 was the normal (non-induced) group, 2-9 were anemic rats administered 1 mL distilled water, standard drug (3 mg/kg body weight (bw) ferrous sulphate), 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg bw of crude methanolic extract of CP (CMECP) of the leaf and 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg bw of CMECP of the seed respectively in the first stage of the study. In the second stage, thirty-three rats were randomized into eleven groups of three rats as follows; group 1 was the normal group, 2-11 were anemic rats treated with 1 mL distilled water, standard drug, 75 mg/kg bw, 150 mg/kg of alkaloid fraction of CP seed, 75 mg/kg bw, 150 mg/kg bw of flavonoid fraction of CP seed, 75 mg/kg bw and 150 mg/kg of alkaloid fraction of CP leaf, 75 mg/kg bw and 150 mg/kg bw of flavonoid fraction of CP leaf respectively. RESULTS: Treatment of anemic rats with CP extracts and fractions of the seed and leaf significantly reversed the hematological parameters and body weight of anemic rats in a dose independent fashion. The CMECP leaf at 100 and 500 mg/kg gave PCV of 42.50±0.50 and 47.00±0.50, while the seed gave 49.50±0.50 and 42.50±0.50 respectively after 2 weeks of treatment. However, the alkaloid and flavonoid fraction of CP presented better anti-anemic properties probably due to constituents' synergism. CONCLUSION: This study concluded that CP possesses phytoconstituents which potentiates it as a safe anti-anemic drug candidate.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Risk stratification for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) for left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease is essential for informed decision-making. This study explored the potential of machine learning (ML) methods to identify key risk factors associated with mortality in this patient group. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted on 866 patients from the Gulf Left Main Registry who presented between 2015 and 2019. The study outcome was hospital all-cause mortality. Various machine learning models [logistic regression, random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, naïve Bayes, multilayer perception, boosting] were used to predict mortality, and their performance was measured using accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: Nonsurvivors had significantly greater EuroSCORE II values (1.84 (10.08-3.67) vs. 4.75 (2.54-9.53) %, P<0.001 for survivors and nonsurvivors, respectively). The EuroSCORE II score significantly predicted hospital mortality (OR: 1.13 (95% confidence interval: 1.09-1.18), P<0.001), with an AUC of 0.736. RF achieved the best ML performance (accuracy=98, precision=100, recall=97 and F1 score=98). Explainable artificial intelligence using SHAP demonstrated the most important features as follows: preoperative lactate level, emergency surgery, chronic kidney disease (CKD), NSTEMI, nonsmoking status, and sex. QLattice identified lactate and CKD as the most important factors for predicting hospital mortality this patient group. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the potential of ML, particularly the Random Forest, to accurately predict hospital mortality in patients undergoing CABG for LMCA disease and its superiority over traditional methods. The key risk factors identified, including preoperative lactate levels, emergency surgery, chronic kidney disease, NSTEMI, nonsmoking status, and sex, provide valuable insights for risk stratification and informed decision-making in this high-risk patient population. Additionally, incorporating newly identified risk factors into future risk scoring systems can further improve mortality prediction accuracy.

RESUMO

One of the best antipsychotics for treating schizophrenia and bipolar disorders is olanzapine (OLA). However, its use is restricted owing to unfavorable adverse effects as liver damage, dyslipidemia, and weight gain. The primary objective of the present investigation was to examine the signaling mechanisms that underlie the metabolic disruption generated by OLA. Besides, the potential protective effect of sulforaphane (SFN) and ß-sitosterol (ßSS) against obesity and metabolic toxicity induced by OLA were inspected as well. A total of five groups of male Wistar rats were established, including the control, OLA, SFN+OLA, ßSS+OLA, and the combination + OLA groups. Hepatic histopathology, biochemical analyses, ultimate body weights, liver function, oxidative stress, and pro-inflammatory cytokines were evaluated. In addition to the relative expression of FOXO, the signaling pathways for PI3K/AKT, JAK/STAT3, and MAPK were assessed as well. All biochemical and hepatic histopathological abnormalities caused by OLA were alleviated by SFN and/or ßSS. A substantial decrease in systolic blood pressure (SBP), proinflammatory cytokines, serum lipid profile parameters, hepatic MDA, TBIL, AST, and ALT were reduced through SFN or/and ßSS. To sum up, the detrimental effects of OLA are mediated by alterations in the Akt/FOXO3a/ATG12, Ras/SOS2/Raf-1/MEK/ERK1/2, and Smad3,4/TGF-ß signaling pathways. The administration of SFN and/or ßSS has the potential to mitigate the metabolic deficit, biochemical imbalances, hepatic histological abnormalities, and the overall unfavorable consequences induced by OLA by modulating the abovementioned signaling pathways.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION / OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown that Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with a hypercoagulable state. Studies have yet to examine the interconnectedness between COVID-19, hypercoagulability, and socioeconomics. The aim of this work is to investigate socioeconomic factors that may be associated with pulmonary embolism (PE), Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), and COVID-19 in the United States (U.S.). METHODS: We performed a 1-year (2020) analysis of the National Inpatient Sample database. We identified all adult patients diagnosed with COVID-19, acute PE, or acute DVT using unweighted samples. We calculated the correlation and odds ratio (OR) between COVID-19 and 1) PE, and 2) DVT. We executed a univariate analysis followed by a multivariate analysis to examine the effect of different factors on PE and DVT during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: 322,319 patients were identified with COVID-19, while 78,101 and 67,826 patients were identified with PE and DVT, respectively. PE and DVT, as well as, inpatient mortality associated with both conditions are significantly correlated to COVID-19. The OR between COVID-19 and PE was 2.04, while the OR between COVID-19 and DVT was 1.44. Using multivariate analysis, COVID-19 was associated with a higher incidence of PE (coefficient 2.05) and DVT (coefficient 1.42). Other factors that were significantly associated (p<0.001) with increased incidence of PE and DVT along with their coefficients, respectively, include Black race (1.23, 1.14); top quartile income (1.08, 1.16); west region (1.10, 1.04); urban teaching facilities (1.09, 1.63); large bed size hospitals (1.08, 1.29); insufficient insurance (1.88, 2.19); hypertension (1.24, 1.32); and obesity (1.41, 1.25). Factors that were significantly associated (p<0.001) with decreased incidence of PE and DVT along with their coefficients, respectively, include Asians/Pacific Islanders (0.52, 0.53); female sex (0.79, 0.74); homelessness (0.62, 0.61); and diabetes mellitus (0.77, 0.90). CONCLUSION: In a nationwide inpatient sample of the United States, COVID-19 is positively correlated to venous thromboembolism - including its subtypes: pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. Utilizing multivariate analysis, Black race, male sex, top quartile income, west region, urban teaching facilities, large bed size hospitals, and insufficient social insurance were significantly associated with increased incidence of PE and DVT. Asians / Pacific Islanders, female sex, homelessness, and diabetes mellitus were significantly associated decreased incidence of PE and DVT.

RESUMO

Rice straw is considered an agricultural waste harmful to the environment, which is abundant in most parts of the world. From this point, the present study is devoted to preparing new composites of two types of glue based on rice straw as a plentiful, low-cost matrix. Straw glue samples were prepared by mixing 20% wt. of rice straw with 80% wt. of animal glue (RS-An) and polyvinyl acetate (RS-PVAC) at different thicknesses of 1, 2, and 3 cm. The chemical composition of the prepared samples was identified by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and their morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscope. The mechanical test explored that RS-An and RS-PVAC respectively required a stress of 25.2 and 25.5 MPa before reaching the breaking point. γ-ray shielding performance was analyzed and determined at numerous photon energies from 0.059 to 1.408 MeV emitted from five-point γ-rays sources using NaI (Tl). Linear attenuation coefficient was calculated by obtaining the area under the peak of the energy spectrum observed from Genie 2000 software in the presence and absence of the sample. The experimental results of mass attenuation coefficient were compared with theoretical data of XCOM software with relative deviation ranging from 0.10 to 2.99%. Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation code was also employed to validate the experimental results. The relative deviation of XCOM and Geant4 outcomes was 0.09-1.77%, which indicates a good agreement between them. Other radiation shielding parameters such as half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer, and mean free path were calculated in three ways: experimentally, theoretically from the XCOM database, and by simulation using Geant4 code. Additionally, effective atomic number (Zeff), effective atomic number (Neff), equivalent atomic number (Zeq), and buildup factors were evaluated. It was confirmed that the γ-ray shielding properties were further boosted by mixing rice straw with the animal glue compared to the synthetic one.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Wilms tumor (WT) survival has been affected by the evolution in clinical and biological prognostic factors. Significant differences in survival rates indicate the need for further efforts to reduce these disparities. This study aims to evaluate the clinicopathological data impact on survival among patients after Wilm's diagnosis. METHODS: The study utilized the SEERStat Database to identify Wilms tumor patients, applying SEERStat software version 8.3.9.2 for data extraction. Selection criteria involved specific codes based on the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICDO-3), excluding cases with unknown SEER stage, incomplete survival data, unknown size, or lymph node status. Statistical analyses, including Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox regression models, were conducted using R software version 3.5. Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) were computed with SEER*Stat software, and relative and conditional survival analyses were performed to evaluate long-term survival outcomes. RESULTS: Of 2273 patients diagnosed with Wilms tumor, (1219 patients, 53.6% were females with an average age group of 3-8 years (50.2%). The overall mean survival after five years of diagnosis was 93.6% (2.6-94.7), and the overall mean survival rate was 92.5% (91.3-93.8) after ten years of diagnosis. Renal cancers were identified as the leading cause of death (77.3%), followed by nonrenal cancers (11%) and noncancer causes (11%). Additionally, robust relative survival rates of 98.10%, 92.80%, and 91.3% at one, five, and ten years, respectively, were observed, with corresponding five-year conditional survival rates indicating an increasing likelihood of survival with each additional year post-diagnosis. Univariate Cox regression identified significant prognostic factors: superior CSS for patients below 3 years (cHR 0.48) and poorer CSS for those older than 15 years (cHR 2.72), distant spread (cHR 10.24), regional spread (cHR 3.09), and unknown stage (cHR 4.97). In the multivariate model, age was not a significant predictor, but distant spread (aHR 9.22), regional spread (aHR 2.84), and unknown stage (aHR 4.98) were associated with worse CSS compared to localized tumors. CONCLUSION: This study delving into WT survival dynamics reveals a multifaceted landscape influenced by clinicopathological variables. This comprehensive understanding emphasizes the imperative for ongoing research and personalized interventions to refine survival rates and address nuanced challenges across age, stage, and tumor spread in WT patients.

RESUMO

Background: Supracondylar humerus (SCH) fractures are some of the most common fractures in pediatric patients with surgery typically consisting of either open or closed reduction with internal fixation. The aim of this meta-analysis was to identify patient, injury, and administrative factors that are associated with treating pediatric SCH fractures with open techniques. Methods: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, PubMed and CINAHL database searches were conducted for studies from 2010 to 2023 that made direct comparisons between open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP) for treating SCH fractures in the pediatric population. The search terms used were "pediatric" AND "SCH fracture" OR "distal humerus fracture." Screening, quality assessment, and data extraction were performed by 4 reviewers. After testing for heterogeneity between studies, data were aggregated using random-effects model analysis. Results: Forty-nine clinical studies were included in the meta-analysis. Summated, there were 94,415 patients: 11,329 treated with ORIF and 83,086 treated with CRPP. Factors that were significantly associated with greater rates of ORIF included obesity (p = 0.001), Gartland type IV fractures (p < 0.001), general neurological deficits (p = 0.019), and ulnar nerve deficits (p = 0.003). Gartland type II (p = 0.033) and medially displaced fractures (p = 0.011) were significantly associated with lower rates of ORIF. Secondary analysis showed cross-pinning constructs (p = 0.033) and longer hospital stays (p = 0.005) are more likely to be observed in patients undergoing ORIF compared with CRPP. Conclusion: This meta-analysis demonstrates that factors such as obesity, fracture displacement, and concomitant nerve deficits are more likely to require ORIF as opposed to CRPP. Level of Evidence: Therapeutic Level III.

RESUMO

Cleome amblyocarpa Barr. and Murb. from the family Cleomaceae is used in folk medicine as it has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In this study, ten compounds from the whole plant of C. amblyocarpa, a wild plant that grows in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, were isolated. Six compounds, ß-sitosterol 3-O-ß-d-glucoside 2, calycopterin 5, rhamnocitrin 6, 17α-hydroxycabraleahy-droxylactone 7, cleogynol 8, and ß-sitosterol 10 were first isolated from this species. In addition, four previously reported compounds, kaempferol-3, 7-dirhamnoside 1, 15α-acetoxycleomblynol A 3, and 11-α-acetylbrachy-carpone-22(23)-ene 4, as well as cleocarpanol 9, were isolated and identified. Isolated compounds were evaluated to determine their analgesic properties utilizing a hot-plate test method, and their anti-inflammatory effects utilizing rat paw edema. In a hot-plate test, compounds 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 showed significant pain inhibition in latency time as compared to the normal group. Compounds 3-9 exhibited a significant inhibition of carrageenan-induced inflammation. According to the results of this work, compounds 3 and 4 (Dammarane triterpenoid) have the strongest analgesic/anti-inflammatory activity as compared to the other tested compounds. These results give support to the medicinal benefits of the plant as an analgesic along with an anti-inflammatory agent in traditional therapy. Molecular modelling studies of the isolated compounds 3 and 4 assessed the molecular affinity and binding interaction patterns for these compounds towards COX-2 as compared to specific COX-2 inhibitors and in relation to COX-1 isozyme. Compound 3 revealed extended accommodation across COX-2's hydrophobic sub-pockets and preferential thermodynamic stability across molecular dynamics simulations.

RESUMO

Introduction: Xanthomas are skin swellings that are caused by the accumulation of cholesterol and lipids in the body. They are associated with lipid disorders, such as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). FH is a rare genetic disorder, which is characterized mainly by high levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol. Case presentation: The authors report a case of an 11-year-old female who had multiple swellings all over the body with the largest measuring 7×4×3 cm in diameter. These lesions were gradually increasing in size since 4 years. She was being bullied by her school colleagues because of swellings appearance. Clinical examination revealed multiple yellowish masses on the patient's elbows, knees, and buttocks which were painless, firm, and nontender. Laboratory tests revealed elevated levels of serum cholesterol (512 mg/dl) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (469.2 mg/dl). Masses ultrasound showed similar echogenicity to upper and lower extremities subcutaneous fat. Incisional biopsy microscopic images revealed clusters of foam cells. These findings led to a diagnosis of Homozygous FH and she underwent surgery to remove the xanthomas on her elbows. Discussion: Xanthomas are small, yellowish skin swellings that form due to the presence of high lipids. As they are typically painless and small, this could lead to a late treatment or misdiagnosis. Drugs, lifestyle changes, and surgery represent treatment plan options. Conclusion: Xanthomas can be the first indication of an underlying hypercholesterolemia problem and this case report highlights the importance of early diagnosis of Homozygous FH by providing the suitable management for this case in its early stages which can prevent developing serious complication.

RESUMO

Background: In developing countries, institutional delivery is a key proven intervention that reduces maternal mortality and can reduce maternal deaths by approximately 16%-33%. In Somalia, only 32% of births are delivered in a health facility with the assistance of a skilled healthcare provider. We aimed to investigate the factors hindering women from giving birth at healthcare facilities in major towns in Somalia, where most of the health facilities in the country are concentrated. Methods: A community-based health survey was carried out in 11 major towns in Somalia between October and December 2021. A structured and pretested questionnaire was used to collect data from 430 women who gave birth in the last five years. Women were recruited through convenient sampling. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, and binary and multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with 95% CI were estimated to assess the associations. Results: The overall prevalence of institutional delivery was 57%. Approximately 38% of women living in Mogadishu and 53% living in another ten towns give birth at home. Women who had poor knowledge of the importance of health facility delivery had nearly four times higher odds of delivering at home (AOR 3.64 CI: 1.49-8.93). Similarly, those who did not receive antenatal care (AOR 2.5, CI: 1.02-6.39) and those who did not receive a consultation on the place of delivery (AOR 2.15, CI: 1.17-3.94) were more likely to give birth at home. The reasons for home delivery included financial reasons, the long distance to the health facility, and the fact that it was easier to give birth at home. Conclusion: The study found that home delivery is high in major towns in Somalia and is associated with a lack of understanding of the importance of health facility delivery, not using ANC, and not receiving consultancy about where to give birth. Primary health care should strengthen information, education, and communication activities. Since the health care system in Somalia is overwhelmingly private, the government may consider access to free and within-reach ANC and health facility delivery for women and girls from families who cannot pay the ANC and childbirth delivery cost.

RESUMO

Multidrug-resistant bacterial infections pose a significant threat to human health, prompting the exploration of innovative solutions. In this study, a new series of antibacterial hybrid nanoparticles (HNPs) were developed. The HNPs are based on a combination of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), synthesized using Carica papaya leaf extract, and chitosan (CS/SeHNPs) or trimethyl chitosan (TMC/SeHNPs), respectively. Comprehensive characterization using UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, DLS, TEM, and DSC confirmed the structure and properties of the developed HNPs. SeNPs, CS/SeHNPs, and TMC/SeHNPs showed average hydrodynamic size of 78.8, 91.3, and 122 nm, and zeta potentials of -6.35 mV, +32.8 mV, and +54.8 mV, respectively. Biological assessments were conducted, including antibacterial and antibiofilm assays against clinical strains (E. coli, S. aureus, and K. pneumoniae), along with antioxidant activity. TMC/SeHNPs demonstrated superior performance compared to SeNPs and CS/SeHNPs with the lowest minimum inhibition concentrations (MIC) against S. aureus and K. pneumoniae (3.9 µg/mL) and 62.5 µg/mL against E. coli in addition to robust antibiofilm activity. Furthermore, the TMC/SeHNPs exhibited potent DPPH free radical scavenging ability and demonstrated good biocompatibility, as evidenced by cell viability assays on HFB4 cells. Overall, TMC/SeHNPs emerged as promising candidates in nanomedicine, offering high antioxidant, antibacterial, and antibiofilm activities alongside excellent biocompatibility.

RESUMO

The aim was to investigate LA strain by feature tracking cardiac MRI in mitral stenosis (MS) patients before and after percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (PBMV). Patients underwent cardiac MRI before and after successful PBMV (n = 18). Mitral valve area, transmitral velocity and gradients, LA volumes and ejection fraction (LAEF) were measured. LA strain feature tracking analysis was used to calculate LA reservoir, conduit, and booster strain. LA strain, LA volumes, LAEF and mitral valve severity indices were compared before and after PBMV. Correlations between LA strain and other cardiac MRI parameters were assessed. After PBMV, mitral valve area increased from 1.18 ± 0.25 cm2 to 2.26 ± 0.27 cm2, p < 0.001. Transmitral peak velocity decreased from 1.7 ± 0.37 m/s to 1.3 ± 0.27 m/s, p < 0.001. Transmitral peak gradient decreased from 12.4 ± 4.8 mmHg to 6.8 ± 2.9 mmHg, p < 0.001, and mean gradient decreased from 6.9 ± 3.8 mmHg to 2.9 ± 1.4 mmHg, p < 0.001. Maximal LA volume decreased from 73.1 ± 14.2 ml/m2 to 62.7 ± 16.3 ml/m2, p = 0.018; corrected p value = 0.054. LAEF increased from 36.3 ± 8.7% to 44.4 ± 9.5%, p = 0.010. Reservoir strain increased from 11.7 ± 3.1% to 14.9 ± 3.6% after PBMV, p = 0.009, and conduit strain from 3.8 ± 2% to 6 ± 2.3%, p = 0.005. Booster strain insignificantly increased after PBMV. Cardiac MRI feature tracking provides information on the 3 LA functional phases. Significant improvement was observed in reservoir and conduit functions after successful PBMV.

RESUMO

In the present study, the frequency-dependent dielectric relaxation and electrical conduction mechanisms in sol-gel-derived Zn0.5Cd0.5Fe2O4 (ZCFO) spinel ferrite were studied in the temperature range of 343-438 K. The formation of the ZCFO spinel ferrite phase with space group Fd3m was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The dielectric relaxation and electrical conduction mechanisms were studied using complex impedance spectroscopy (CIS). In the Nyquist plots, depressed semicircles were fitted with an equivalent circuit model with configuration (RGBQGB) (RGQG), signifying the contributions from grain boundaries and grains to the charge transport mechanism in the sample. The frequency-dependent AC conductivity was found to follow Jonscher's power law, and the frequency exponent term depicted the overlapping large polaron hopping (OLPH) model as the dominant transport mechanism. The activation energies for conductivity, electric modulus and impedance were calculated to identify the nature of the charge carriers governing the relaxation and conduction mechanisms in the prepared sample. Complex modulus studies confirmed the non-Debye type of dielectric relaxation, whereas tangent loss and dielectric constant analyses confirmed the thermally activated hopping mechanism of charge carriers in Zn0.5Cd0.5Fe2O4 spinel ferrite.

RESUMO

Antibiotic overuse in poultry feeds has disastrous implications; consequently, long-term alternatives must be developed. As a result, the current study aims to assess the impact of Aspergillus niger filtrate (ANF) high in organic acids grown on agro-industrial residue of faba bean (AIRFB) on quail diet, as well as their influence on bird productivity, digestion, carcass yield, blood chemistry, and intestinal microbiota. A total of 240 Japanese quails (aged 7 d) were used in this study, divided equally among 5 experimental groups with 48 quails each. Group 1 (G1) received a basal diet without any ANF, group 2 (G2) received a basal diet supplemented with 0.5 mL ANF/kg diet, group 3 (G3) received a basal diet supplemented with 1.0 mL ANF/kg diet, group 4 (G4) received a basal diet supplemented with 1.5 mL ANF/kg diet, and group 5 (G5) received a basal diet supplemented with 2 mL ANF/kg diet. The performance parameters were monitored at 1 to 3, 3 to 5, and 1 to 5 wk. Adding ANF increased body weight at 3 and 5 wk, as well as body weight gain at 1 to 3, 3 to 5, and 1 to 5 wk, compared to the control diet. The ANF fed quails had the highest feed conversion ratio compared to the control group. The addition of ANF to the quail diet had no effect on the weight of the carcass, gizzard, heart, liver, giblets, or dressing; however, it did lower triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, and very low-density lipoprotein while increasing high-density lipoprotein levels. The quail groups that received ANF had enhanced immunological indices such as IgG, IgM, IgA, and lysozymes. It also increased the levels of superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant contents, as well as catalase, and digestive enzymes such as protease, amylase, and lipase. However, it lowered the blood MDA levels compared to control. It has been demonstrated that the total gut microbiota, Escherichia coli, total coliforms, and the population of Salmonella are all reduced in ANF-fed quails. Histological examination of ANF quails' liver and intestinal sections revealed normal hepatic parenchyma, typical leaf-like intestinal villi, and comparatively short and frequently free lumina. In conclusion, Japanese quail showed improvements in performance, digestive enzymes, antioxidant indices, immunity, and capacity to reduce intestinal pathogenic bacteria after consuming diet supplemented with ANF.

RESUMO

Even while accelerated cardiomyocyte apoptosis is one of the primary causes of cardiac damage, the underlying mechanism is still mostly unknown. In addition to examining potential protective effects of bisoprolol and diosmin against CoCl2-induced cardiac injury, the goal of this study was to identify potential mechanisms regulating the hypoxic cardiac damage caused by cobalt chloride (CoCl2). For a period of 21 days except Cocl2 14 days from the first day of the experiment, rats were split into the following groups: Normal control group, rats received vehicle only (2 ml/kg/day, p.o.), (Cocl2, 150 mg/kg/day, p.o.), bisoprolol (25 mg/kg/day, p.o.); diosmin (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.) and bisoprolol + diosmin + Cocl2 groups. At the end of the experimental period, serum was taken for estimation of cardiac function, lipid profile, and pro/anti-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, tissue samples were collected for evaluation of oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, α-SMA, PKC-α, MiR-143-3P, MAPK, ERK5, MCP-1, CXCR4, Orai-1, and STIM-1. Diosmin and bisoprolol, either alone or in combination, enhance heart function by reducing abnormalities in the electrocardiogram and the hypotension brought on by CoCl2. Additionally, they significantly ameliorate endothelial dysfunction by downregulating the cardiac expressions of α-SMA, PKC-α, MiR-143-3P, MAPK, ERK5, MCP-1, CXCR4, Orai-1, and STIM-1. Bisoprolol and diosmin produced modulatory activity against inflammatory state, redox balance, and atherogenic index concurrently. Together, diosmin and bisoprolol, either alone or in combination, significantly reduced all the cardiac alterations brought on by CoCl2. The capacity to obstruct hypoxia-induced α-SMA, PKC-α, MiR-143-3P/MAPK/MCP-1, MiR-143-3P/ERK5/CXCR4, Orai-1/STIM-1 signaling activation, as well as their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties, may be responsible for these cardio-protective results.

RESUMO

Melt quenching technique was used to create Bismuth Boro-Silicate nano glasses with compositions of 45SiO2-10CaO- 25Na2O- xBi2O3- (20-x) B2O3 (where x is 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mol %). Standard point sources AM-241, Ba-133, Co-60, Cs-137, and Eu-152 were used in the radiation experiment to evaluate the attenuation coefficients spanning the energy range of 59.51 keV to 1048.01 keV. The findings show that adding Bi2O3 in place of B2O3 increases the following: radiation protection efficiency (RPE%), transmission factor (TF%), absorption buildup factor values (ABF), exposure buildup factor values (EBF), mass attenuation coefficients (MACs), linear attenuation coefficients (LACs), and radiation protection efficiency (RPE%). In comparison to lead glass, these findings demonstrate the potential of nano Bismuth Boro-Silicate glass as a radiation shielding material.

RESUMO

Aim The study aimed to estimate the proportion of patients who were evaluated for thrombosis risk and received appropriate thromboprophylaxis, if indicated, in King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Method This was a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted among inpatients from May 1 to August 31, 2020, in KAUH. Results Out of 298 pregnant women, the mean age was 32.09 ± 5.29 years. A total of 136 (45.6%) were obese and 97 (32.6%) were overweight. There was a significant relationship between Caprini score categories and the following variables: age, body mass index (BMI), medical disease, history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), mode of delivery, prophylaxis, and its duration (p < 0.05). Conclusion Awareness about thromboprophylaxis in reducing the risk of developing venous thrombosis has increased compared to before, with more than half of the cases receiving it regardless of the risk level. The highest risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) was found in older women, obese women, and those with a previous history of DVT. Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) was the main prophylaxis in the hospital with an average duration of three days.
