RESUMO

Background: Condition mediums have a potential role in oocyte development. In this study, we evaluated the effects of different mediums on the developmental potential of vitrified immature human oocyte after IVM and parthenogenesis by ionomycin. Methods: Immature oocytes were collected from 184 women after vitrification/thawing and maturation, in three types of IVM mediums separately. Finally, 151 IVM MΙΙ oocytes were obtained and randomly divided into six groups and underwent the following intervention. Fresh and vitrified-thawing MΙΙ oocytes were activated after IVM in three conditioned mediums by ionomycin. Mediums included 1) Minimum Essential Medium Alpha (α-MEM) (as control medium), 2) α-MEM supplemented with supernatants of Mesenchyme bone marrow (B.M), 3) α-MEM with ovarian growth factors (O.F). Then, scoring of parthenote embryos was undertaken in accordance with pertinent morphological properties. Moreover, the expression of Bax and Bcl2 were determined in the parthenote embryos. Result: Percentage of the degenerated oocyte, 2-4 cells, 4-8 cells, and 16 cells, was different in the experimental groups. Also, cytoplasmic maturation and blastocyst formation rates were significantly different (p < 0.05) between the control and the other mediums. The highest mRNA expression levels of Bcl2 and Bax genes in parthenotes were observed in the fIVM O.F and vIVM α-MEM mediums, respectively. vIVM, α-MEM and fIVM O.F showed the lowest expression of Bcl2 and Bax genes, respectively. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that the O.F. medium had more potent effects on oocyte growth and cytoplasmic maturation up to the blastocyst stage with the highest expression level of the BCL2 gene and the lowest relative amount of the BAX gene in this medium. The results of the present study have been verified only for parthenogenetically activated embryos, and any positive effect of the environment on the egg/embryo fertilized with sperm requires more extensive studies.

RESUMO

Background and aims: Diabetes mellitus (DM) may have different adverse effects on the male reproductive system. Zinc (Zn) is one of the necessary elements in the human and mammalian diet that plays an important role in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) by providing antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties. The aim of this study was to determine the protective effects of zinc supplements on sperm chromatin and the evaluation of sperm deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) integrity in diabetic men. Methods: In this interventional study, 43 infertile Iranian men in diabetic and non-diabetic groups were included. They were then randomly divided into two subgroups: normal saline intake and zinc sulfate intake (25 mg orally for 64 days each). Different indices of sperm analysis (number, morphology and motility) and testosterone levels were evaluated in four groups. Protamine deficiency and DNA fragmentation were assessed using chromomycin A3 (CMA3) and sperm chromatin dispersion (SCD) methods, respectively. Results: Zinc supplementation reduced the deformity of neck and head of sperms (p < 0.05), as well as deformity of sperm tail in infertile diabetic men. Zinc administration ameliorated sperm motility types A, B and C (p < 0.05). Moreover, zinc administration reduced abnormal morphology and DNA fragmentation of sperms, which increased the SCD1 and SCD2 and reduced the SCD3 and SCD4 in both treated groups. Conclusion: Zinc supplementation, as a powerful complement, is able to balance the effect of diabetes on sperm parameters, sperm chromatin and DNA integrity. Consequently, zinc supplementation can probably be considered a supportive compound in the diet of diabetic infertile men.

RESUMO

Since the release of the last meta-analysis on the association between fish intake and prostate cancer risk, several cohort studies have been published. Moreover, none of the previous meta-analyzes examined the dose-response association between fish intake and prostate cancer. Therefore, the current dose-response meta-analysis was conducted to summarize available findings on the associations of fish intake with the risk of prostate cancer in men. Online databases of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched up to September 2022. We included prospective cohort studies that examined the associations of fish intake with the risk of prostate cancer (total, localized, and advanced prostate cancer), its mortality, and cancer progression. Summary relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for the highest versus lowest categories of fish intake using random-effects models. Also, linear and non-linear dose-response analyzes were conducted. In total, 25 prospective cohort studies, recruiting 1,216,474 men, were included in the systematic review, and 22 studies were included in the meta-analysis. During the follow-up periods, ranging from 6 to 33 years, a total of 44,722 cases of prostate cancer were recorded. The comparison between the highest and lowest intakes of total fish revealed the summary RRs of 0.97 (95% CI: 0.86-1.10) for total, 1.01 (95% CI: 0.91-1.13) for advanced, and 0.90 (95% CI: 0.72-1.12) for localized prostate cancer, indicating no significant association. Moreover, the summary RR was 0.55 (95% CI: 0.33-0.92) for prostate cancer mortality and 0.84 (95% CI: 0.65-1.10) for prostate cancer progression, indicating an inverse association between fish intake and prostate cancer mortality. Also, in the dose-response analyzes, each 20 gram/day increase in total fish intake was associated with a 12% lower risk of prostate cancer mortality. Our findings support the protective association between total fish intake and the risk of prostate cancer mortality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Alcohol abuse among women is a significant health problem. Consuming alcohol in high amounts causes decreased sexual stimulation, vaginal lubrication, dyspareunia, and difficulty reaching orgasm. Due to the different effects of alcohol consumption on sexual function, this study aimed to investigate the effect of alcohol consumption on sexual dysfunction in women. METHODS: In this study, the researchers conducted a systematic search of several databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and ScienceDirect, as well as the Google Scholar search engine, to identify studies reporting the impact of alcohol consumption on female sexual dysfunction. The search was conducted up until July 2022. A total of 225 articles were searched in the databases, and an additional 10 relevant articles were identified through manual search. After removing 93 articles due to duplication, 90 articles were excluded based on the study's inclusion and exclusion criteria. During the merit evaluation phase, 26 articles were excluded through the full-text study based on the study's inclusion and exclusion criteria, while 26 articles were excluded due to their low quality. Ultimately, only 7 studies were deemed suitable for the final evaluation. The analysis was conducted using a random effects model, while the heterogeneity of the studies was assessed using the I2 index. Data analysis was performed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Version 2 software. RESULTS: Based on the review of 7 studies involving a total sample size of 50,225 women and using the random effects method, the calculated odds ratio was 1.74 (95% CI: 1.006-3.04). This indicates that alcohol consumption increases the likelihood of sexual dysfunction in women by 74%. The Begg and Mazumdar rank correlation test, was used to analyze the distribution bias, but the results were not significant at the 0.1 significance level (p = 0.763). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study demonstrate a significant correlation between alcohol consumption and an increased risk of sexual dysfunction in women. These results highlight the need for policymakers to prioritize this issue and raise awareness regarding the harmful effects of alcohol consumption on female sexual function and its impact on population health and reproduction.

RESUMO

Myocardial infarction (MI) affects many molecular pathways in heart cells, including the Ido1-KYN-Ahr axis. This pathway has recently been introduced as a valuable therapeutic target in infarction. We examined the effects of moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on the axis in the heart tissue of male Wistar rats with occluded left anterior descending (OLAD). Thirty rats (age 10-12 weeks, mean weight 275 ± 25 g) were divided into five groups with 6 animals: Control (Ct) group, MICT group, rats with OLAD as MI group, rats with OLAD treated with MICT (MIMCT group) and rats with OLAD treated with HIIT (MIHIIT group). Rats performed the training protocols for 8 weeks, 5 days a week. HIIT included 7 sets of 4 min running with an intensity of 85-90% VO2max and 3 min of recovery activation between sets. MICT included continuous running at the same distance as HIIT with an intensity of 50-60% VO2max for 50 min. The expressions of Ahr, Cyp1a1, and Ido1 were assayed by real-time PCR. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and Kynurenine levels, and AHR, CYP1A1, and IDO1 proteins were detected using ELISA. Data were analyzed using the ANOVA and MANOVA tests. Compared to the CT group, MI caused an increase in all studied factors, but only statistically significant (P < 0.05) for MDA and IDO1. With a greater effect of HIIT, both protocols significantly lowered the proteins expressions in the MIHIIT and MIMCT groups, compared with the MI group (P < 0.001). In healthy rats, only AHR protein significantly decreased in the MICT group compared to the Ct group (P < 0.05). HIIT and MICT protocols significantly reduced the gene and protein expression of Cyp1a1 (P < 0.05) and Ido1 (P < 0.01), and HIIT had a greater effect. In conclusion, both protocols were effective at reducing the levels of Ido1-Kyn-Ahr axis components and oxidative stress in the infarcted heart tissue and HIIT had a higher significant effect.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In artificial reproductive technique (ART), nearly 20% of human oocytes are immature in the germinal vesicle (GV) phase. Consequently, the best method for reserving them is cryopreserving GV oocytes, and in vitro maturation (IVM) is recommended. The aim of this study was to determine the ultrastructure characteristics of fresh and vitrified immature human oocytes after in vitro maturation in conditioned mediums. METHODS: This study was a comparative laboratory study carried out in 2018 at Afzalipur Infertility Center in Kerman. 170 fresh and 198 vitrified GV oocytes were cultured within three IVM mediums; α-mem as control medium, α-mem supplemented with human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and α-mem supplemented with ovarian growth factors (O.F). After 48 h, the maturation rate and morphological feature of IVM oocytes [132 fresh IVM (fIVM) and 134 vitrified IVM (vIVM)] were evaluated. For the ultrastructure study, 10 IVM oocytes from each medium were compared with 10 fresh in vivo oocytes cancelled from ART. RESULTS: The survival rate of vitrified GV oocyte after thawing was 88.88%. The oocyte maturation rate was reduced in vIVM compared to the fIVM group (76.33% vs. 77.95%); the highest oocyte maturation rate in the O.F fIVM and lowest in α-mem vIVM (82.35% vs. 71.42%). The lowest number of cortical granules was observed in α-mem vIVM, but the greatest presence of M-SER aggregates was in O.F fIVM. In vIVM oocytes, the oolemma contained irregular little microvillus organization. CONCLUSIONS: The O.F mediums have shown the highest maturation which defends the oocyte ultra-structural conservation.

RESUMO

The increased number of female smokers is considered a global health challenge in recent years. One of the detrimental effects of smoking is sexual hormone fluctuation causing female sexual dysfunction (FSD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects of smoking leading to FSD. Electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Science Direct, and Google Scholar) were hired for systematic searching. Until June 2022, whole qualified studies reporting the consequences of smoking on FSD were gathered for data analysis based on the random effects model (CMA software, v.2). Study heterogeneity and publication bias were also assessed using I2 index and Egger test, respectively. Ten eligible studies with a sample size of 15,334 female smokers (18-79 years) were selected. Following data analysis, the odds ratio representing the effects of smoking on FSD was found 1.48 (95%CI: 1.2-1.83), indicating that female smokers were 48% more susceptible to FSD than non-smokers. Also, the publication bias was reported as non-significant (p = 0.178). Since smoking is an increasingly common phenomenon in females and women smokers are 48% more susceptible to the FSD, preparation of necessary health measures by the health policymakers to reduce the number of female smokers and subsequent health services seems necessary.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue syndrome is a persistent and debilitating disorder. According to several studies, chronic fatigue syndrome has been identified among recovered COVID-19 patients as the most common symptom of long COVID. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis study was to obtain the prevalence of chronic fatigue syndrome in long COVID cases. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we analysed reported results of studies that assessed the occurrence of chronic fatigue syndrome among COVID-19 patients four weeks after the onset of symptoms. The study selection was commenced by searching PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, Embase, and Google scholar using the keywords of Chronic fatigue syndrome, COVID-19, and post-COVID-19 syndrome. The searches were without a lower time limit and until April 2022. Heterogeneity of studies was assessed using the I2 index, and a random effects model was used for analysis. Data analysis was performed within the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 2). RESULTS: The pooled prevalence of chronic fatigue syndrome four weeks after the onset of COVID-19 symptoms, in 52 studies with a sample size of 127,117, was 45.2% (95% CI: 34.1-56.9%). Meta-regression analysis in examining the effects of the two factors of sample size, and year of study on the changes in the overall prevalence, showed that with increasing sample size, and year of study, the prevalence of chronic fatigue syndrome among long COVID patients (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our results show that the overall prevalence of chronic fatigue syndrome as a long COVID symptom is 45.2%. Chronic fatigue after infection with COVID-19 can negatively affect personal and social lives. Given such significant negative consequences caused by the syndrome, it is recommended that health policymakers allocate funds to reduce the adverse effects of this syndrome, by creating programs to support long COVID patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases and is recognized as a global problem that is currently showing a growing trend. Cancer is one of the most stressful circumstances that a person may experience. Given how the mental state of patients with depression and anxiety may have a negative impact on their experience with cancer, this study was conducted with the aim to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression in cancer patients in Iran. METHODS: This study was conducted using a systematic review method and based on the guideline Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020). The studies used were searched for via databases, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), Google Scholar, SID, Magiran, and using keywords related to anxiety, depression, and cancer. After extracting the required data, statistical analysis was performed based on the random model and using the second version of Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Software. RESULTS: In a review of 24 studies with a sample size of 3225 people, the overall prevalence of depression in cancer patients in Iran was reported to be 50.1% (95% CI: 40.6-59.6). Additionally, in a review of 15 studies with a sample size of 2009, the overall prevalence of anxiety in cancer patients in Iran was reported to be 40.9% (95% CI: 30.9-51.6). The highest reported prevalence of depression in cancer patients in Iran according to the Beck questionnaire is 64.6 (95% CI: 48.2-78.1). Specifically, the highest prevalence of depression was reported in patients with breast cancer with a prevalence of 66 (95% CI: 50.9-78.4). The highest prevalence of anxiety in patients with cancer in Iran according to the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale was 49.2 (95% CI: 18.9-80.1). Comparatively, the highest prevalence of anxiety in patients with breast cancer was reported to be 53.2 (95% CI: 25.8-78.7). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of depression and anxiety among cancer patients in Iran, in particular patients with breast cancer, is significantly higher than in other parts of the world. The prevalence found in our study was even higher than the reported number by studies that have examined the disorder globally. Therefore, it is of great urgency for health system policymakers to work to improve the current situation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy has traditionally been defined in various texts as the use of 5 or more chronic drugs, the use of inappropriate drugs, or drugs that are not clinically authorized. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of polypharmacy among the COVID-19 patients, and the side effects, by systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: This study was performed by systematic review method and in accordance with PRISMA 2020 criteria. The protocol in this work is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021281552). Particular databases and repositories have been searched to identify and select relevant studies. The quality of articles was assessed based on the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale checklist. Heterogeneity of the studies was measured using the I2 test. RESULTS: The results of meta-analysis showed that the prevalence of polypharmacy in 14 studies with a sample size of 189,870 patients with COVID-19 is 34.6% (95% CI: 29.6-40). Studies have shown that polypharmacy is associated with side effects, increased morbidity and mortality among patients with COVID-19. The results of meta-regression analysis reported that with increasing age of COVID-19 patients, the prevalence of polypharmacy increases (p < 0.05). DISCUSSION: The most important strength of this study is the updated search to June 2022 and the use of all databases to increase the accuracy and sensitivity of the study. The most important limitation of this study is the lack of proper definition of polypharmacy in some studies and not mentioning the number of drugs used for patients in these studies. CONCLUSION: Polypharmacy is seen in many patients with COVID-19. Since there is no definitive cure for COVID-19, the multiplicity of drugs used to treat this disease can affect the severity of the disease and its side effects as a result of drug interactions. This highlights the importance of controlling and managing prescription drugs for patients with COVID-19.

RESUMO

Recent advances in nanotechnology sciences lead to the development of new treatment approaches for various diseases such as cancer. Nanotechnology advances can potentially minimize the side effects of drugs through the employment of effective and controlled drug delivery systems (DDSs). Polymers are optimal tools providing drug delivery mechanisms through the unique features of pharmacokinetics, circulation time, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. This systematic review aimed to evaluate polymer-based DDSs for anticancer drugs and their various therapeutic applications in cancer treatment. This study was conducted with no time limitation by November 2021. Related articles were collected through a deep search in English and Persian databases of SID, MagIran, Scopus, Web Of Science (WoS), PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Keywords included drug delivery system, anticancer agent, polymeric nanostructure-based drug delivery, polymer-based drug delivery, and polymeric system. As the results showed, polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) have influential roles in cancer treatment than conventional chemotherapy procedures. PNPs can reduce cytotoxicity following chemotherapy drug administration, improve the solubility characteristics of these therapeutic agents and inhibit the rate of tumor growth.

RESUMO

Background: The level of activity in women who have given birth is very low despite the great benefits of exercise on their physical and mental health. There are some contradictories between the results of several preliminary studies on the effects of exercise on post-partum fatigue reduction. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of exercise on decreasing postpartum fatigue in general and, specifically, in Iran using meta-analysis. Methods: In this study, the articles printed in international and national centres of SID, MagIran, IranMedex, IranDoc, Cochrane, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science (WoS), were used to find the studies electronically published up to 2021. The studies' heterogeneity was examined using the I2 index, and subsequently, a random-effects model was applied. Data analysis was performed within the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 2). Results: Finally, nine articles met the inclusion criteria in this systematic and meta-analysis review. The included samples were 456 patients in the intervention group and 446 in the control group. The mean score of fatigue after the intervention was 8.1 ± 1.1 lower than before intervention in the experimental group, and this difference was statistically significant (p ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that exercise reduces postpartum fatigue, which can be used for counseling and treatment by gynecologists. Reduce postpartum problems in women and increase the quality of life after childbirth.

RESUMO

Background: Type 2 diabetes is the most common diabetes in the world and constitutes a high percentage of diabetes cases. This study aims to determine the overall prevalence of gastrointestinal complaints in Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: The articles were extracted based on entry and exit criteria by searching the Cochrane (Embase), ScienceDirect databases. Scopus PubMed; And Web of Science (WoS), based on PRISMA 2009. To evaluate the studies, a 22-item STROBE checklist was selected and related items were used. Results: The probability of publication bias in reporting the results was examined by the Egger test (P = 0.891). The prevalence rate of gastrointestinal complaints in patients with type 2 diabetes in Iran in 10 studies was 52.3% (95% CI: 33.4-70.7%). The results of metargression showed a significant difference between the sample size and the prevalence of gastrointestinal complaints in patients with type 2 diabetes (P < 0.05). and the prevalence of gastrointestinal complaints in patients with type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: The results of this study report that, the prevalence of gastrointestinal complications in type 2 diabetes patients was high. As a result, appropriate measures should be taken to improve the condition of diabetic patients through appropriate policy-making and providing feedback to hospitals and patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Anemia is one of the most critical health conditions affecting people worldwide. The disease is silent, with a slow progression and a few physical symptoms. Anemia during pregnancy carries the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, and fetus malformations and can impose additional costs on society and families. Therefore, the aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women worldwide. METHODS: In this work, we have conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the studies that have examined the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women globally. The Google Scholar, Cochrane, ScienceDirect, Medline (PubMed), and Web of Science (WoS) databases were searched for articles published between 1991 and 2021. The search keywords were anemia, pregnancy, prevalence, and meta-analysis. In order to analyze the eligible studies, the stochastic effects model was used, and the heterogeneity of the studies was examined using the I2 index. Data analysis was performed within the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (Version 2). RESULTS: The search resulted in 338 deduplicated studies, of which 52 studies with a total sample size of 1,244,747 people were included in this review. According to the results of the meta-analysis, the overall prevalence of anemia in pregnant women is 36.8% (95% confidence interval: 31.5-42.4%). The highest prevalence of anemia is mild at 70.8 (95% CI 58.1-81) and highest in the third trimester of pregnancy with the prevalence of 48.8 (95% CI 38.7-58.9), while the highest prevalence of anemia in pregnant women was in Africa with the prevalence of 41.7 (95% CI 32.3-49.4). CONCLUSION: The results of this study show a high prevalence of anemia among pregnant women worldwide, and the highest of this prevalence is mild anemia. The prevalence of anemia in the third trimester was higher than in the first and second trimesters. Anemia in pregnant women in developing countries is significantly higher than in developed countries due to pregnancy's economic, sociological, and health factors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection is the most common infection in type 2 diabetic patients. Various studies have reported different outbreaks of urinary tract infections in type 2 diabetic patients. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence of urinary tract infections in type 2 diabetic patients during a systematic review and meta-analysis in order to develop interventions to reduce the incidence of urinary tract infections in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS: In this study, systematic review and meta-analysis of study data related to the prevalence of urinary tract infection in type 2 diabetic patients were conducted using keywords including type 2 diabetes, urinary tract infection, diabetes, prevalence, meta-analysis and their English equivalents in SID, MagIran, IranMedex, IranDoc, Google Scholar, Cochrane, Embase, Science Direct, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science (WoS) databases from 1993 to 2020. In order to perform the analysis of qualified studies, the model of random-effects was used, and the inconsistency of studies with the I2 index was investigated. Data analysis was performed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (Version 2). RESULTS: Based on a total of 15 studies with a sample size of 827,948 in meta-analysis, the overall prevalence of urinary tract infection in patients with type 2 diabetes was 11.5% (95% confidence interval: 7.8-16.7%). The prevalence of urinary tract infections in diabetic Iranian patients increased with increasing number of years of research, (p < 0.05), and with increasing age of participants (p < 0.05), but however the prevalence decreased with increasing sample size (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study shows that urinary tract infections are highly prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, due to the growing prevalence of diabetes and its complications such as urinary tract infections, the need for appropriate screening programs and health care policies is becoming more apparent.

RESUMO

Hepatitis C virus (HCV), one of the most significant causes of liver inflammation, has a high annual mortality rate. The unfavorable hygiene conditions and inadequate health monitoring in many prisons increase the risk of blood-borne infections such as hepatitis C. The growing incidence of this disease among prisoners results in overspill transmission to the general population from undiagnosed prisoners that have been released. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hepatitis C among the world's prison population. A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on the prevalence of hepatitis C was carried out using the keywords "Prevalence", "Hepatitis C", and "Prisoner" in the Iranian and international databases SID, MagIran, Iran Doc, Science Direct, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science (WoS) from January 1990 to September 2020. After transferring the articles to the information management software EndNote and eliminating duplicate studies, the remaining studies were reviewed based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, three stages of primary and secondary evaluation, and qualitative evaluation. Comprehensive meta-analysis software and Begg and Mazumdar and I2 tests were used for data analysis and assessment of dissemination bias, and heterogeneity, respectively. Out of 93 studies (22 from Asia, 26 from Europe, seven from Africa, 29 from America, and nine from Australia) with a total sample size of 145,823 subjects, the prevalence of hepatitis C in prisoners worldwide was estimated to be 17.7% (95% confidence interval, 15-20.7%). The highest prevalence of hepatitis C on the continents included in this study was reported in prisoners incarcerated in Australia and Oceania, with 28.4% (95% CI: 21.6-36.4) in nine studies, and Europe, with 25.1% (95% CI: 19.4-31.8) in 26 studies. All studies used an ELISA test for the detection of HCV antibodies. The results showed a prevalence of HCV of 17.7% in prisoners worldwide, ranging between 10 and 30% over five continents (Asia, Europe, America, Africa, and Australia and Oceania). The highest prevalence was reported in Australia and Oceania (28.4%), indicating the need to pay more attention to this issue on the continent. It is necessary to reduce the incidence of the disease in prisons by appropriate policy-making and the development of accurate and practical programs, including the distribution of free syringes and examination, testing, and screening of prisoners.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the prevalence of class 1 integrons, antibiotic resistance pattern in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) isolated from clinical samples other than burn samples. METHODS: The Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct databases were searched using keywords based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The cross-sectional studies published from 1st January 2000 until 1st January 2019 were included which addressed the prevalence of class 1 integrons and antibiotic-resistance in P. aeruginosa isolated from clinical samples other than burn samples. Meta-analysis was conducted using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software. The random-effects model, Cochran's Q and I2 tests were applied for statistical analyses. RESULTS: Eight articles met the eligibility standards for including in the present meta-analysis. The combined prevalence of class 1 integrons in P. aeruginosa isolated from clinical samples other than burn samples was reported by 40% (95% CI:26.1-55.8%). The pooled prevalence of Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) P. aeruginosa isolates was 70.1%. The highest prevalence of combined antibiotic resistance was related to carbenicillin with a resistance rate of 79.9%. In general, 6 (75%) out of the 8 included studies showed the correlation between the presence of class 1 integrons and antibiotic resistance. CONCLUSION: Regarding the correlation between the presence of integrons and the high antibiotic resistance reported by studies included in the present review, there is the need for preventive measures to prevent the spread of resistance by integrons and transferring to other micro-organisms.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: Vitrification is a physical process in which the concentrated cryoprotectant solution after exposure to extreme cold without ice crystal formation in living cells to be converted glassing state. In this study, maturation rate and ultrastructure of mouse oocytes followed by vitrification before or after in-virto maturation (IVM) were evaluated. A total of 373 germinal vesicle oocytes were obtained from ovaries and divided into three fresh IVM, IVM vitrified, vitrified IVM groups. Ten metaphase II oocytes were obtained from uterine tubes and considered as the control group. Oocytes in vitrified groups were vitrified by Cryotop using vitrification medium and kept in liquid nitrogen. The maturation media was a-MEM supplemented with rFSH + hCG. After 24-48 h of incubation, the oocytes were investigated for nuclear maturation and ultrastructural changes using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The oocyte maturation rate in vIVM group was significantly lower than IVMv group, when the two groups were compared with vIVM had the highest maturity. The evaluation ultrastructure of the four groups showed that the number of cortical granules, microvilli and mitochondria-SER aggregates in vIVM group were lowest and the highest amongst the number of vacuoles. Zona pellucida was darker than the control group in two freeze groups vIVM and IVMv. Most similar groups to the control group were group vIVM, Group IVMv and ultimately vIVM group, respectively. According to the results, IVM procedure is more efficient when it is performed before oocyte vitrification.

The aim of the present study was to determine whether mesenchymal stem cell-conditioned medium (MSC-CM) modulates apoptotic and stress-related gene expression, and ameliorates maturation and developmental potential of immature human oocytes after artificial activation. A total of 247 surplus immature germinal vesicle (GV) oocytes obtained from infertile women were allocated into two in vitro maturation (IVM) groups: 1: GV oocytes (n = 116) matured in vitro (fIVM), and 2: GV oocytes (n = 131) that were vitrified, then in vitro matured (vIVM). Also, two maturation media were used: Alpha-minimum essential medium (α-MEM) and human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUCM). After 36 h of incubation, the IVM oocytes were examined for nuclear maturation. In IVM-matured oocytes, cytoplasmic maturation was evaluated after artificial activation through Ionomycin. Moreover, the quantitative expressions of B-cell CLL/lymphoma 2 (BCL2), BCL2-associated X protein (BAX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Heat shock proteins (HSP70) in matured oocytes were assessed by quantitative Real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and compared with fresh and vitrified in vivo matured oocytes, which were used as fIVM and vIVM controls, respectively. The highest maturation rate was found in hUCM in fIVM, and the lowest maturation rate was found using α-MEM in vIVM (85.18% and 71.42%, respectively). The cleavage rate in fIVM was higher than that in vIVM (83.4% vs. 72.0%). In addition, the cleavage rate in α-MEM was lower than that in the hUCM (66.0% vs. 89.4%). Furthermore, the difference between parthenote embryo arrested in 4-8 cells (p < 0.04) and the quality of embryo arrested in 8-cell (p < 0.007) were significant. The developmental stages of parthenote embryos in hUCM versus α-MEM were as follows: 2-4 cell (89.45% vs. 66.00%, respectively), 4-8 cell (44.31% vs. 29.11%, respectively), morula (12.27% vs. 2.63%, respectively), and blastocysts (2.5% vs. 0%, respectively). The messenger RNA (mRNA) expression levels of BCL2, BAX and SOD were significantly different (p < 0.05) between the matured IVM oocytes. Overall, hUCM showed potential efficacy in terms of ameliorating oocyte maturation and in promoting the development and mRNA expression of BAX, BCL2, and SOD.
