AIMS: The present study aimed to provide summarized data related to the phytocompouds improving glucose uptake in the diabetic state. BACKGROUND: Glucose uptake in peripheral tissues such as skeletal muscle and adipose tissue is considered as an important step in the regulation of glucose homeostasis. Reducing high blood glucose levels in diabetic patients via targeting peripheral glucose uptake is a promising strategy to develop new antidiabetic medications derived from natural products. OBJECTIVE: The current review focused on antidiabetic natural phytocompounds acting on glucose uptake in adipocytes and skeletal muscles to highlight their phytochemistry, the mechanistic pathway involved, toxicity, and clinical assessment. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in the scientific database with specific keywords on natural phytocompounds demonstrated to possess glucose uptake stimulating activity in vitro or ex vivo during the last decade. RESULTS: In total, 195 pure molecules and 7 mixtures of inseparable molecules isolated from the plants kingdom, in addition to 16 biomolecules derived from non-herbal sources, possess a potent glucose uptake stimulating capacity in adipocytes and/or skeletal muscles in adipocytes and/or skeletal muscles in vitro or ex vivo. Molecular studies revealed that these plant-derived molecules induced glucose uptake via increasing GLUT-4 expression and/or translocation through insulin signaling pathway, AMPK pathway, PTP1B activity inhibition or acting as partial PPARγ agonists. These phytocompounds were isolated from 91 plants, belonging to 57 families and triterpenoids are the most sous-class of secondary metabolites showing this activity. Among all the phytocompounds listed in the current review, only 14 biomolecules have shown an interesting activity against diabetes and its complications in clinical studies. CONCLUSION: Epicatechin, catechin, epigallocatechin 3-gallate, quercetin, quercetin 3-glucoside, berberine, rutin, linoleic acid, oleanolic acid, oleic acid, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, hesperidin, and corosolic acid are promising phytocompounds that showed great activity against diabetes and diabetes complications in vitro and in vivo. However, for the others phytocompounds further experimental studies followed by clinical trials are needed. Finally, foods rich in these compounds cited in this review present a healthy diet for diabetic patients.

AIMS: The goal of this work was to evaluate the antihypertensive activity of Prunus armeniaca. BACKGROUND: Prunus armeniaca is known for its beneficial medicinal properties. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract of Prunus armeniaca L. (P. armeniaca) leaves (PAAE) on arterial blood pressure in normotensive and hypertensive rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the in vivo examination, N-omega-Nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride( L-NAME)-induced hypertensive and normotensive rats received PAAE (160 and 100 mg/kg) orally for the acute experiment spanning 6 hours and for seven days for the subchronic treatment; their blood pressure parameters were also evaluated. In the in vitro experiment, isolated intact thoracic aortic rings were precontracted with KCl (80 mM) and epinephrine (EP) (10 µM), and vascular dilatation was assessed. RESULTS: PAAE lowered blood pressure parameters in L-NAME-induced hypertensive without affecting normotensive rats following oral administration, suggesting that PAAE possesses an antihypertensive effect. In addition, PAAE (0.25-1 mg/mL) revealed a vasorelaxant effect in thoracic aortic rings precontracted by EP (10 µM), and this effect was especially reduced in the presence of glibenclamide or nifedipine. However, PAAE (0.25-1 mg/mL) had only a minimal vasorelaxant effect on thoracic aortic rings precontracted by KCl (80 mM). CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that the P. armeniaca aqueous extract possesses potent antihypertensive and vasorelaxant activity, and its vasorelaxant activity seems to be mediated through the opening of ATP-sensitive K+ channels and inhibition of L-type calcium channels.

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 is a virus that uses ACE2 to enter the host cell. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the in silico inhibitory activity of polyphenols from Prunus armeniaca (P. armeniaca) on angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). METHODS: The efficacy of phytocompounds from P. armeniaca in inhibiting ACE2 was tested through molecular docking and dynamic analyses. The toxicological analysis of P. armeniaca was also evaluated. RESULTS: A total of twenty polyphenols were docked against the ACE2 active site, and four compounds showed interesting profiles. In vivo acute toxicity study demonstrated that the aqueous extract of Prunus armeniaca was safe. CONCLUSION: Four compounds from Prunus armeniaca seem to exert an inhibitory potential of ACE2.

AIMS: The study aimed to evaluate the glucose-lowering effect of Tetraclinis articulata. BACKGROUND: Tetraclinis articulata is commonly used for the treatment of diabetes characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to evaluate the effect of Tetraclinis articulata (T. articulata) aqueous extract (TAAE) on glycaemia and lipid profile in normal and streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Additionally, its acute toxicity, phytochemical composition, and antioxidant capacity were assessed. METHODS: To highlight the effect of TAAE on plasma glucose levels and lipid metabolism, blood glucose levels were measured at 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours of treatment for the acute test and on days 2, 4 and 7 over the daily oral administration for the subchronic test at two selected doses (10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg). Furthermore, Triglycerides (TGs), total cholesterol (TC), and High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) were measured after the treatment. The rats' liver, extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and soleus muscle were isolated from diabetic rats treated with TAAE at a dose of 20 mg/kg at the end of the experiment to measure glycogen content using a standard method. The acute toxicity of TAAE was examined according to the OECD guideline. In addition, body weight, signs of toxicity, and/or mortality were observed for 14 days. Besides, a preliminary phytochemical screening, quantification of phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin contents as well as the antioxidant activity were evaluated. RESULTS: The results showed that TAAE at the doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg possesses a potent antihyperglycemic effect in STZ-treated diabetic rats and an acute hypoglycemic effect in normal rats, as well as, the extract provoked a decrease of blood glucose levels after glucose loading in the glucose tolerance test in a dose-dependent manner. TAAE at a dose of 20 mg/kg revealed a significant improvement of the lipid profile. However, treatment with TAAE at a dose of 20 mg/kg did not significantly modify the glycogen content. In the same way, the acute toxicity analysis revealed no death or signs of toxicity in rats, and the LD50 value was more than 2 g/kg. In addition, preliminary phytochemical screening revealed that TAAE revealed the presence of polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, carbohydrates, saponins, quinones, sterols and terpenoids. Furthermore, TAAE exhibited a potent antioxidant activity which may be due to the richness in polyphenol content (756.21±6.72 mg GAE/1 g of extract). CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrates for the first time that aqueous Tetraclinis articulata extract has a potent the glucose-lowering effect.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Plants of the genus Euphorbia have long been used as traditional medicine in China, Europe, America, Turkey, India, Africa, Iran, and Pakistan for their great medicinal value and health benefits. Their stems, leaves, roots, and latex are widely used to treat respiratory infections, body and skin irritations, digestive disorders, inflammatory infections, body pain, snake or scorpion bites, pregnancy, sensory disturbances, microbial and anticancer diseases. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to provide updated information on the genus Euphorbia, including traditional medicinal uses, valuation and exploitation of medicinal plants, phytochemistry, botanical characterization, pharmacological and toxicological research focused on the medicinal properties of several Euphorbias in particular their antibacterial, anti-tumor, and cell manifestations, in addition to the effect of each isolated bioactive molecule from these species and their pharmacological use including preclinical evaluation of new drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This work was conducted using scientific databases such as: PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, etc. In addition, ChemDraw software has been used for the drawing of chemical molecules. The correct names of the plants were confirmed from plantlist.org. The results of this review research were interpreted, analyzed and documented based on the bibliographical information obtained. RESULTS: Among all the species of the Euphorbiaceae family, 15 species have been demonstrated to exhibit anticancer activity, 21 species have antibacterial activity, and 10 species have cytotoxic activity. The majority of the chemical constituents of this plant include triterpenoid glycosides, diterpenoids, flavonoids, and the 4α-methyl steroids. Among them, the main bioactive constituents are present in the diterpenoid fraction. The study of more than 33 steroid plants identified more than 104 compounds. Pharmacological research proved that the crude extracts and some pure compounds obtained from Euphorbia had activities for the treatment of different diseases. The objective of the present study was focused on cytotoxic, antibacterial and antitumor diseases. The study of the phytochemistry of the Euphorbia families led to the conclusion that all the plants studied had active compounds, of which 27 plants were characterized by their cytotoxic effects, 7 had antibacterial effects and 10 plants had anti-tumor activities. Therefore, the safety of Euphorbia herbal medicine should be considered a top priority in the early stages of development and clinical trials. CONCLUSION: Many previous studies have validated many traditional uses of Euphorbia species. The latex of some Euphorbia species seems to be toxic however, studies dealing with the safety and quality of these species are still incomplete. Extensive studies are needed on the Euphorbia plants before they can be fully used in clinics as a potent drug candidate, as researchers are focusing mainly on diterpenoids and triterpenoids, while there are many other types of compounds that may possess new biological activities.

AIMS: The study aimed to assess the antihypertensive activity of Calamintha officinalis. BACKGROUND: Calamintha officinalis (CO) is a medicinal and aromatic herb as well as an antihypertensive plant that is widely used for its medicinal properties in several regions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract of Calamintha officinalis (AECO) on vasorelaxant activity and arterial blood pressure under normal and hypertensive states in rats. Additionally, the effect of AECO on vascular angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) was assessed. METHODS: In the current study, AECO (100 mg/Kg) was prepared, and its antihypertensive ability was assessed in L-NG-Nitro arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced hypertensive rats. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded for 6 h for the acute experiment and during seven days for the subchronic treatment. RESULTS: The results indicated that AECO reduced the systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressure in hypertensive rats. In addition, the study showed that AECO exerts a vasorelaxant ability through the sGC-cGMP induction pathway, vascular cyclooxygenase pathway, and the opening of K+ channels. However, AECO had no inhibitory effect on aortic ACE-2. CONCLUSION: The study illustrates the beneficial action of AECO as an antihypertensive and vasorelaxant agent.

AIMS: The study aimed to assess the antihyperglycemic activity of Pelargonium graveolens. BACKGROUND: Pelargonium graveolens (P. graveolens) (Geraniaceae) is a medicinal plant frequently used in traditional medicine in Morocco and Algeria as remedy against a multitude of illnesses. Interestingly, it is used in the Moroccan pharmacopeia for managing diabetes. OBJECTIVE: The current study was carried out in order to assess the antihyperglycemic activity of P. graveolens in normal and streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats, as well as to evaluate the acute toxicity of the leaves aqueous extract of Pelargonium graveolens (PGLAE). METHODS: The therapeutic effect of PGLAE at a dose of 40 mg/kg on blood glucose levels was investigated in normal and STZ-induced diabetic rats after a single oral (6h) and a repeated (15 days) oral administration. The acute toxicity of the PGLAE was examined in accordance the OECD test guideline. Post-treatment, body weight, signs of toxicity, and/or mortality were observed for 14 days. Further assays such as the oral glucose tolerance test, histopathological examination and antioxidant activity was also performed according to standard protocols. RESULTS: Findings exhibited that both single and repeated oral doses of PGLAE (40 mg/kg) produced significant reduction of blood glucose levels in normal and diabetic rats. All treated animals survived and no apparent adverse effects were observed during the duration of the acute toxicity study. Importantly, oral LD50 of PGLAE was greater than 2000 mg/kg BW. Furthermore, a remarkable influence on glucose tolerance was also noticed after PGLAE treatment. Moreover, PGLAE was able to improve histopathological structure of liver and possesses a potential antioxidant effect in vitro. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, this study reports the antidiabetic effect of PGLAE in rats supporting then its traditional use for the management of diabetes.

AIMS: The aim of the study was to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of propolis from Saharan region of Morocco. BACKGROUND: Propolis is known from ancient times for its beneficial action on health. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of Moroccan propolis aqueous extract from the desert region on glycemia and lipid metabolism. METHODS: The antihyperglycemic and antidyslipidemic activities of Moroccan propolis aqueous extract were evaluated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Glycemia was monitored during acute (6h) and subchronic treatments. Histopathological analysis of the liver and the serum lipid profile was also evaluated in addition to the glucose tolerance. RESULTS: This work demonstrated that the aqueous extract of Moroccan propolis exhibited a significant antihyperglycemic effect in diabetic rats. Histopathological data demonstrated that propolis acts positively on the liver of diabetic rats. In addition, the preliminary phytochemical screening revealed that Moroccan propolis contains several phytochemicals. Finally, Moroccan propolis had a potent antioxidant activity which may be due to the richness in polyphenols content (90.91 mg EAG/1 g of extract). CONCLUSION: The present study shows that Moroccan propolis from the hot desert region possesses a potent antihyperglycemic effect.

BACKGROUND: At the time of writing this paper, no data was available for the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of African patients with COVID-19. Herein, we profiled retrospectively the epidemiological characteristics (clinical, laboratory, radiological, treatment, and clinical outcomes) of 64 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Regional Hospital Center (RHC) of Errachidia in Morocco. The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological characteristics and laboratory Findings of Covid-19 patients in Errachidia Province, Morocco. METHODS: This is a retrospective single-center study that included all COVID-19 confirmed patients (died or discharged) hospitalized in the Regional Center of Errachidia, Morocco, between March 20, 2020 and May 23, 2020. Patients were confirmed by real-time RT-PCR and epidemiological, demographic, clinical, laboratory, treatment, and outcomes of patients were extracted manually from patient's medical records. RESULTS: In a total of 64 patients with COVID-19, 60.9% of patients were men, with a mean age of 41.5 years (SD 18.62). At the admission, 38 patients were asymptomatic (59.4%), and 58 (90.6%) were clinically classified as being in a benign state. Chronic illnesses were the most comorbidities observed, including diabetes with 8 cases (12.5%), hypertension 3 cases (4.7%), and hyperlipidemia 1 patient (1.6%). The main symptoms were cough 15 (23.4%), fever 10 (15.6), diarrhea 8 (12.5%), headache 5 (7.8%), and sore throat 5 (7.8%). Only 7 patients (10.9%) had lung lesions, and lymphopenia was present in only 7 patients (11.1%). The median duration of viral shedding was 14.5 days (9-22). Concerning deceased cases, they were elderly subjects aged 69.75 years, and they have presented dyspnea, breathing problems, and respiratory distress as specific symptoms. In addition, an increase of the medians of serum AST, CRP, and glucose levels was noticed in this group. During hospitalization, they presented acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and they were transferred to intensive care before they died. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that covid-19 infection often appeared in a benign form in the studied population (90.6% in this study). This finding may incriminate the implication of some protective parameters such as genetic, nutritional or other factors in the Moroccan population.

As an alternative strategy in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, phytoconstituents from medicinal plants are getting attention worldwide. The current investigation focused on the efficacy of the essential phytocompounds identified in Anvillea radiata to target the main protease (Mpro) of SARS-COV-2 through molecular docking and dynamic analyses; in addition to the safety assessment of this herb in vivo. In silico, the 6LU7 structure of Mpro was prepared as a target by Discovery Studio 2020. The virtual screening of phytocompounds from Anvillea radiata was performed through iGEMDOCK program, followed by an evaluation of the potential inhibitors based on the docking scores calculated using AutoDock Vina and MGL Tools programs, as well as complexes stability assessment through MD simulation. In vivo toxicity studies of Anvillea radiata aqueous extract were also conducted in Wistar rats. Among the phytocompounds evaluated in this study, 3,5-Dicaffeoylquinic acid, Spinacetin, 9α-Epoxyparthenolide, Hispidulin, Quercetin, jaceosidin, Nepetin, and isorhamnetin were predicted to have the highest binding affinity for the Main protease (Mpro) target of SARS-CoV-2. The aqueous extract of Anvillea radiata did not induce any signs of toxicity. 3,5-Dicaffeoylquinic acid, Spinacetin, 9α-Epoxyparthenolide, jaceosidin, and isorhamnetin from Anvillea radiata were selected as potential inhibitors of SARS-Cov-2 to develop new drugs anti-COVID-19.

The existence of a causal relationship between the rise of the death rate in COVID-19 infected patients and their sufferance from non-communicable pathophysiological conditions, particularly chronic diseases, was recently evidenced. In fact, in addition to the immunodeficiency generated by chronic disease conditions, COVID-19 also led to affect the immune system. Furthermore, the novel coronavirus attacks the lungs and other vital organs such as heart, kidneys, and brain. All these outcomes are accused of being involved in the increasing vulnerability and comorbidity in COVID-19- infected people with chronic diseases. Pharmacological, dietetic and natural approaches were suggested after deep bibliographic research for presenting preventive recommendations for this category of patients in order to avoid the fatal complications of this infection, and consequently limiting the risk of comorbidity. In this regard, some medications could enter into interaction with COVID-19 infection in patients with diabetes or hypertension and thereafter lead to fatal complications. Furthermore, regarding their nutritional values, some foods are more useful than others during this pandemic period because they are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and perhaps some bioactive phytochemicals, which are known to be effective in improving immune response, managing chronic diseases and/or having antiviral activities. In addition, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, prebiotics and probiotics could be helpful in these conditions. Interestingly, in order to understand the mechanism of this causality and suggesting efficacious solutions, this review deserves considerable epidemiologic, clinical and experimental investigations.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the effect of Micromeria graeca on blood glucose levels and lipid parameters in an experimental model of diabetes. BACKGROUND: Micromeria graeca (L.) Benth. ex Rchb is a medicinal plant used in Morocco for the treatment of several pathologies including diabetes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic effects of the aqueous extract of Micromeria graeca (M. graeca) aerial parts (AEMG) under physiological (normal rats) and pathological (STZ-induced diabetic rats) conditions. Additionally, we analyzed the phytochemical composition and antioxidant capacity. METHODS: The effects of the acute and sub-chronic administration of AEMG (20 mg/kg) on blood glucose levels and lipid profiles were evaluated in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Moreover, the phytochemical analysis was carried with standard tests and estimation of total phenolics compounds by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The antioxidant activity was realized by the DPPH method. RESULTS: Single oral administration of M. graeca aqueous extract decreased blood glucose levels 4 and 6 hours (p<0.01) after treatment in diabetic rats. In accordance, the repeated oral administration of M. graeca showed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels in diabetic rats since the second day to the end of the period experiment (p<0.0001). In addition, two weeks of treatment with M. graeca reduced total cholesterol levels (p<0.05) with a significant increase of HDL-c level (p<0.01) in diabetic rats. Moreover, M. graeca scavenged DPPH radical in a dose-dependent manner (IC50=0.48 mg/ml), whereas IC50 was 0.55 mg/ml for BHT. Phytochemical analysis showed the richness of Micromeria graeca on polyphenols (281.94±4.61 mg GAE/1 g), flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, saponins, sterols, sesquiterpenes, and terpenoids. CONCLUSION: AEMG exhibits antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities in STZ-induced diabetic rats and a potent antioxidant capacity.

AIMS: The present study was performed in order to analyze the antihypertensive activity of Micromeria graeca (L.) Benth. ex Rchb. BACKGROUND: Micromeria graeca (L.) Benth. ex Rchb is an aromatic and medicinal plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. This herb is used to treat various pathologies such as cardiovascular disorders. Meanwhile, its pharmacological effects on the cardiovascular system have not been studied. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of aerial parts of Micromeria graeca (AEMG) on the cardiovascular system in normotensive and hypertensive rats. METHODS: In this study, the cardiovascular effect of AEMG was evaluated using in vivo and in vitro investigations. In order to assess the acute effect of AEMG on the cardiovascular system, anesthetized L-NAME-hypertensive and normotensive rats received AEMG (100 mg/kg) orally and arterial blood pressure parameters were monitored during six hours. In the sub-chronic study, rats were orally treated for one week, followed by blood pressure assessment during one week of treatment. Blood pressure was measured using a tail-cuff and a computer-assisted monitoring device. In the second experiment, isolated rat aortic ring pre-contracted with Epinephrine (EP) or KCl was used to assess the vasorelaxant effect of AEMG. RESULTS: Oral administration of AEMG (100 mg/kg) provoked a decrease of arterial blood pressure parameters in hypertensive rats. In addition, AEMG induced a vasorelaxant effect in thoracic aortic rings pre-contracted with EP (10 µM) or KCl (80 mM). This effect was attenuated in the presence of propranolol and methylene blue. While in the presence of glibenclamide, L-NAME, nifedipine or Indomethacin, the vasorelaxant effect was not affected. CONCLUSION: This study showed that Micromeria graeca possesses a potent antihypertensive effect and relaxes the vascular smooth muscle through ß-adrenergic and cGMP pathways.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract of Anvillea radiate (A. radiata) aerial parts (AEAR) on arterial blood pressure in normotensive and hypertensive rats. METHODS: The effect of the acute and sub-chronic administration of AEAR on the following blood pressure parameters: systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean blood pressure (MBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and heart rate (HR) was evaluated in normotensive and L-NAME induced hypertensive rats. In the second experiment, the vasorelaxant effect of AEAR was assessed in isolated aortic rings from rats with functional endothelium pre-contracted with epinephrine (EP) or KCl, and six antagonists/ inhibitors were used to explore the mechanisms of action involved in the vasorelaxant effect. In order to determine the phytochemical contents of Anvillea radiata, HPLC-ESI-MS analysis was conducted. RESULTS: Daily oral administration of AEAR (100 mg/kg) provoked a significant decrease in SBP, MBP, and DBP without affecting HR in hypertensive rats. In addition, AEAR (0.08-0.64 mg/ml) revealed a vasorelaxant effect in thoracic aortic rings pre-contracted by EP (10 µM) or KCl (80 mM). This effect was reduced in the presence of Nifedipine, L-Name or Methylene blue. The polyphenolic compounds of AEAR were determined. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that AEAR possesses a potent antihypertensive activity and its vasorelaxant activity seems to be mediated through Ca2+ channels, direct nitric oxide (NO), and NO/cGMP pathways. Chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid identified in A. radiata could be at least partially responsible for the antihypertensive activity of this extract.
