PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of keratoconus (KC) on quality of life and assess visual performance via the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25) in the Saudi population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using the NEI-VFQ-25 to evaluate the vision-related quality of life among previously diagnosed KC patients. An online questionnaire was used to distribute the validated survey through various social media networks. The data were extracted, reviewed, coded, and then analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). RESULTS: A total of 429 patients completed the questionnaire. The overall score of NEI-VFQ-25 was 58.6 (SD: 18.0). The visual performance was worse in females than males (with a score of 55.1), especially in patients aged less than 30 years. Visual function improved with the use of low-vision aids (spectacles and contact lenses) compared with those who did not use them. CONCLUSION: Our study confirms the functional impairment in patients with KC, especially in females, patients aged less than 30 years, and those with no low-vision aids. Moreover, it suggests a significant role of these vision aids (spectacles and contact lenses) in improving the quality of life in patients with KC.

Objective Estimate the prevalence of depression among individuals with a dry eye disease (DED) in Saudi Arabia using two questionnaires: Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Dry Eye Questionnaire (DEQ-5), and explore potential factors implicated in the development of depression among the DED population. Methods This is a descriptive cross-sectional study of 476 patients with DED which was conducted using a PHQ-9 questionnaire to screen for depression and a DEQ-5 questionnaire to diagnose DED. The questionnaires were merged and distributed using Google Forms through various social media platforms targeting the Saudi population. After data collection, it was revised, coded and fed to statistical software IBM SPSS version 22 (SPSS, Inc. Chicago, IL). Results Depression was diagnosed among 200 participants (42%) of the cases with dry eyes. From which 5.7% had mild depression, 13.9% had moderate depression, 12.6% had moderately severe depression, and 9.9% had severe depression. A female predominance was noticed; 44.7% of the females with dry eyes had depression compared to 32.4% of males with recorded statistical significance (P=0.023). Depression was detected among 55% of those who are less than 20 years old in comparison to 27% of those who are 30 years or older (P=0.001). Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), prolonged electronic device usage and contact lens wear are reported as risk factors associated with an increase in dry eye symptoms. However, there is no statistically significant relationship between contact lens wear and depression among dry eye disease patients. Conclusion Suffering from DED is a possible risk factor for developing depression as DED is associated with depression of higher degrees of severity. Depression among DED patients is found to be significantly more prevalent among females and the young adult population rather than older adults.

Introduction The conjunctiva is one of the most frequently damaged targets for inflammatory responses induced by allergic immunological hypersensitivity reactions. Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) typically manifests as a spectrum of potential severity, ranging from mild symptoms to severe troublesome symptoms that might interfere significantly with daily activities and overall quality of life. Aim This study aimed to evaluate impact of the quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of life of allergic conjunctivitis patients. Methodology  This is a cross-sectional study conducted among confirmed patients with allergic conjunctivitis in Saudi Arabia from the period of July 2020 to September 2020. An electronic validated structured-questionnaire explored the participants' demography, symptoms, known allergen and risk factors, and patient psychological and functional domains of life using Eye Allergy Patient Impact Questionnaire (EAPIQ). Data were gathered in MS Excel and all statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 21. Results The most common symptoms of AC was itching (79.9%) and redness of the eye (38.8%), while the most common causes was dust (46.9%) and pollens (46.9%). With regards to the assessment of EAPIQ, the mean score was higher in the impact of eye allergy symptoms domain (mean 12.6 ± 4.84 SD.), while it was lower in the impact of AC on the psychological and emotional domain (mean 10.7 ± 5.62 SD.). Statistical analysis revealed that previous history of AC and a visit to healthcare provider were the significant factors associated with the increased risk of eye allergy symptoms, troubled daily activities and bothered psychological and emotional life. Conclusion This study demonstrated that a patients' eye allergy symptoms affect many aspects of patients' daily activities. In addition to affecting functionality, these symptoms also affect patients' emotional state. Although the impact of daily activities and emotions due to eye allergy were minimal, the impact of eye allergy symptoms during quarantine period was still found to be moderate. We found the severity of AC & its impact over a patients' quality of life was moderate which suggests there was no major effect found on AC severity during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine period. Further studies with detailed analysis of triggering factors might lead to a better understanding of the disease and its relation to the patients' activities & lifestyle which can directly affect the AC management & quality of life.

Background Depression is a highly prevalent disorder globally and locally in Saudi Arabia. Individuals with chronic conditions are more liable to develop depression. Keratoconus is a chronic progressive corneal disorder that markedly affects the vision and quality of life, making its sufferers liable to developing depression. Methods This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that was conducted using 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to screen for depression among adults aged between 18 and 60 years old only. The participants in this study are patients who have been previously diagnosed with keratoconus by their ophthalmologists. The structured questionnaire was distributed using Google Forms through various social media platforms. After extracting the data, it was revised, coded and then analyzed using the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 21 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results A total of 330 keratoconus patients living in Saudi Arabia were recruited in this study. The modal age group was 31-40 years old (44.5%), and the male to female ratio was 3:2. The most frequently reported concurrent eye diseases of the patients were astigmatism (48.5%) and myopia (36.7%). The prevalence of depression among patients with keratoconus was 40.6% (n = 134). The use of corrective contact lens (includes both: hybrid and rigid lens) in both eyes contributed to a significantly higher depression rate among its wearers compared to users in one eye and non-users (p<0.001). Conclusion Depression is highly prevalent among keratoconus patients. This is especially true among corrective contact lens wearers of both eyes. Keratoconus is associated with depression regardless of disease severity and socio-demographic characteristics.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine and relate corneal biomechanical metrics with demographic, tomographic and refractive data in healthy Saudi people. DESIGN: Prospective, cross-sectional, observational study. PARTICIPANTS: The study included 215 normal Saudi adult individuals. METHODS: Corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF), Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure (IOPg) and corneal-compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc) were measured by ocular response analyzer. The central keratometry (CK), central corneal thickness (CCT), and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were measured using Pentacam system. The spherical equivalent of refraction (SER) was obtained by an Auto-refractometer. RESULTS: The mean CH was 11.16 ± 2.11, CRF was 11.07 ± 2.31 and IOP was 15.12 ± 3.5. Mean CK, ACD, CH and CRF were distinct among gender with the significant P values of 0.05, 0.006, 0.020, and 0.047 respectively. CRF was negatively correlated with ACD (r = -0.146, P = 0.032). A positive correlation was found between CRF and SER (r = 0.176, P = 0.010), CCT (r = 0.447, p = 0.000) and CH (r = 0.878 and p = 0.000). CH was negatively correlated with IOPcc (-0.433, p = 0.000). A positive correlation was found between CH and ACD (r = -0.14, p = 0.044), SER (r = 0.617, p = 0.014), CCT (r = 0.412, p = 0.000) and IOPg (r = 0.183, p = 0.007). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a distinct difference among gender values of corneal hysteresis and corneal resistance factor being higher in female Saudi subjects. CH and CRF values were higher in Saudi subjects than values in other populations. This may suggest the presence of ethnic differences in ocular parameters and support the importance of establishing population norms for corneal biomechanical parameters.
