Pesticides including cypermethrin (10% EC) are commonly used pesticide in tea gardens of Bangladesh possess distinct harmful effects on an aquatic community. The experiment was carried out to assess the ecotoxicological effects of cypermethrin (10%) concentrate on indigenous Climbing Perch (Anabas testudineus). A total of 120 A. testudineus (mean length 16 ± 2.67 cm and mean weight 31.6 ± 3.56 g) were exposed to the acute toxicity test when the lethal concentration 50 value (LC50) for 96 h was maintained at 1.00 ppm. Three different sub-lethal concentrations of 0.05 ppm (5%), 0.10 ppm (10%), and 0.20 ppm (20%) were used respectively as three treatments and a control of 0 ppm with three replicates each. Restlessness, erratic movement, increased opercular activities, loss of equilibrium, and irregular response to feeding were observed in all the treatments compared to control one. Concerning histopathological alterations, all the analyzed organs showed highest changes in the T3 (cypermethrin conc. 20%) compared to other treatments while T0 (0 ppm) had normal structure. The major changes in the gill were epithelial cell hyperplasia, necrosis, severe lamellar fusion and epithelial lifting; while necrotic proximal tubules, glomerular shrinkage, disrupted renal corpuscle of the kidney and nuclear pyknosis, degenerated hepatic cells and vacuolation were observed in the liver. Severe melanomacrophage centre (MMC), haemosiderosis and vacuolation were found in spleen. The effect of cypermethrin on the hematological parameters of experimental fish was also studied. Red blood cells, hemoglobin and hematocrit were decreased in the experimental groups and lowest value was in T3 while values of white blood cells were increased in the experimental groups compared to control one. Hence, the present observation revealed that pesticides even at low concentrations can cause harmful effects on A. testudineus.

The 17α-methyltestosterone is the most common synthetic hormone used in male mono-sex production of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The current research aimed at finding out the most effective dose of 17α-methyltestosterone to produce quality Nile tilapia fry. Soon after absorbing the yolk sac, Nile tilapia fry was fed with a mixture of commercial fish feed and 17α-methyltestosterone for 28 days. Five doses of 17α-methyltestosterone, i.e., 0 mg, 50 mg, 60 mg, 70 mg, and 80 mg per kg feed, were used to treat tilapia that has been reared for additional 90 days to compare sex reversal, development, and survival rates. Both gonad histology and Squash test were performed to expose the sex percentage of O. niloticus accurately. The highest male 94.44% was obtained at 60 mg 17α-MT/kg feed dose followed by 91.67%, 88.89%, 86.11%, and 47.22% at 70, 80, 50, and 0 mg 17α-MT/kg feed dose. The groups treated with 17α-methyltestosterone hormone showed superior growth performance in comparison to the control group. The highest weight (14.62 ± 0.59 g) and length (92.18 ± 3.01 mm) were found at 60 mg dose whereas the lowest weight (8.64 ± 0.38 g) and length (70.17 ± 3.75 mm) were in the control group. The group given 60 mg 17α-MT feed represented the highest survival rate (84.10%) among other hormone-treated groups. The study disclosed that 60 mg 17α-MT/kg feed might be treated as the optimal dose for producing quality mono-sex male tilapia in the commercial hatchery.

Macrobrachium rosenbergii, the giant freshwater prawn, is an important source of high quality protein and occurs naturally in rivers as well as commercial farms in South and South-East Asia, including Bangladesh. This study investigated the genetic variation and population structure of M. rosenbergii sampled from four rivers in Bangladesh (sample size ranged from 19 to 20), assessing sequence variation, both in the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene and in 106 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) sampled randomly from the genome with double digest RAD sequencing (ddRADseq). The mitochondrial variation presented a shallow genealogy with high haplotype diversity (h = 0.95), reflecting an expansion in population size for the last ~82 kyr. Based on the CO1 variation the current effective population size (Ne) was 9.7 × 106 (CI: 1.33 × 106 - 35.84 × 106) individuals. A significant population differentiation was observed with the mitochondrial CO1 sequence variation and based on the ddRADseq variation, which could be traced to the divergence of the population in the Naf River in the South-East border with Myanmar from the other populations. A differentiation in mtDNA haplotype frequencies was also observed between the Biskhali River and the Karnaphuli Rivers in eastern Bangladesh. This study demonstrated the use of high-throughput genotyping based on the ddRADseq method to reveal population structure at a small geographical scale for an important freshwater prawn. The information from this study can be utilized for management and conservation of this species in Bangladesh.
