This experiment was conducted to study the effect of housing systems and housing densities on the performance and digestive tract growth of broiler chicks during the first 2 wk of age. A total of 3,600 Cobb500 day-old chicks were stocked at 4 densities (30, 60, 90, and 120 chicks/m2), and reared under 2 housing systems (conventional housing system and newly developed housing system), yielding a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement. The studied traits were performance, viability, and gastrointestinal tract development. The results indicated that housing systems and housing densities significantly (P < 0.001) affected the performance and GIT development of chicks. There were no significant interactions between housing system and housing density for body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion. The results also showed that the effects of housing density were age-dependent. That is, the higher the density, the lower the performance and digestive tract growth with advancing age. In conclusion, birds in the conventional system outperformed birds in the newly developed housing system, and further work is needed to improve the new housing system. To achieve the highest performance, digestive tract growth, and digesta content, a density of 30 chicks/m2 is recommended for chicks up to 14-days old.

RESUMO

The threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has attracted the highest level of attention after the United Nation (UN) General Assembly's High Level meeting on AMR in 2016. During that meeting a temporary committee, the inter agency coordination group (IACG) [1] was formulated, under the chairmanship of the Director General of the World Health Organization (DG-WHO) and the UN Deputy Secretary General. The IACG group was tasked to link, guide and advise on political steps needed to address and mitigate the emergence of AMR globally [2]. Efforts to combat AMR, however, have previously been developed prior to this initiative by several decades. Yet, the emergence of resistance continues to be on the rise. The Gulf Cooperation Council Center for Infection Control (GCC-IC) was been established in 2005 and has made major efforts to address all aspects related to human infection control in the member countries. Many of which have been reached. In 2015, the board was able to draft through its multidisciplinary meeting the first roadmap for the counties on this issue [3]. Two years later a follow-up meeting took place in Riyadh on April 2017. Regional and international experts joined in to share and contribute to the understanding of AMR and to advise on further steps needed for this initiative. We dedicated 3 papers on this meeting. The first paper is to provide an update on progress form the GCC countries and further steps that need to be taken, (in press). The second paper is part one out of two round table discussions. The first round table discussion paper, which is the current paper, addresses AMR and the "One Health" concept with a focus on leadership. The second round table discussion paper addresses AMR and the "One Health" concept with a focus on human health [4].

With the increasing production of ethanol for biofuels, a by-product of corn-based ethanol fermentation, dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) is finding its way into the feed of agricultural animals including cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep, goats, aquaculture species and horses. Corn DDGS contains very high levels of non-starch polysaccharides and could be considered a good source of fibre. Despite knowledge of the role of the fibre in modulating intestinal microbiota and consequently influencing health, there is currently little information on the interactions between DDGS and intestinal microbiota. We assessed the changes in the cecal microbiota of broilers feed rations supplemented with DDGS (five concentrations: 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24% w/w) with and without presence of digestive enzymes. DDGS concentration was strongly positively correlated (P = 3.7e-17, r = 0.74) with feed conversion efficiency (FCR), diminishing broiler performance with higher concentrations. Additionally, DDGS concentrations positively correlated with Richness index (P = 1.5e-3, r = 0.5), increasing the number of detectable species in the cecum. Among the most affected genera, Faecalibacterium (P = 0.032, r = -0.34) and Streptococcus (P = 7.9e-3, r = -0.39) were negatively correlated with DDGS, while Turicibacter (P = 2.8e-4, r = 0.52) was positively correlated with the DDGS concentration. Enzymes showed minimal effect on cecal microbiota.
