BACKGROUND: Nursing students need to learn about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia. Cinenureducation is a rigorous method that uses materials from commercial movies or television series to teach health sciences students. OBJECTIVES: Using content analysis of the television series Call the Midwife, design a cinenureducation activity teaching nursing students about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia. Evaluate its effectiveness in knowledge acquisition. DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, AND PRE-POST ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE GAIN FOR TEACHING ACTIVITIES: The study comprised three main steps: designing the teaching activity, implementing it, and analyzing its pedagogical effectiveness through a pre-and-post study to assess knowledge acquisition resulting from the teaching activity. PARTICIPANTS: A six-member panel assessed the suitability of materials for the teaching goals. All second-year undergraduate nursing students in the course "Nursing management and leadership" at a nursing school in the 2022-2023 academic year were invited to participate (N = 160). METHODS: The panel conducted a content analysis of the first two seasons of the series to determine the usefulness of each episode for teaching the chosen topics. Students were randomly assigned to groups watching episodes emphasizing either sexually transmitted infections or preeclampsia, followed by discussion. Learning was gauged through a pre-post viewing 20-question multiple-choice test. Additionally, students' satisfaction was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 142 nursing students participated. Significant differences between mean scores before and after intervention were found [6.90 vs. 6.42 on the preintervention assessment, p < 0.05; mean gain, 0.49 (95 % CI: 0.22-0.76)]. Most students were satisfied with the activity. CONCLUSIONS: The activity was useful for teaching about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia. The use of a television series portraying nurses enables the exploration of these critical topics. This has potential implications for integrating similar methods into nurse education curricula, emphasizing the broader impact of the research on pedagogical practices in healthcare education.

PROBLEM: Midwifery led units are rare in Spain. BACKGROUND: Midwife-Led Care (MLC) is a widely extended model of care and, within this, the alongside midwifery-led units (AMLU) are those hospital-based and located in close connection with obstetric units. In Spain, CL is the first center belonging to the National Health System of these characteristics. AIM: To evaluate the first year of activity of this pioneering unit. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was carried out to assess maternal and neonatal outcomes of births facilitated at CL by comparing with those births that fulfilled the criteria to be admitted at the AMLU but were assisted at the standard obstetric care unit of the hospital. FINDINGS: 174 (20,3%) women and birthing people decided to give birth at CL, whereas 684 (79,7%) gave birth at the Obstetric Unit of the Hospital. Women assisted at the AMLU had lower intervention rates (episiotomy, epidural analgesia) and a higher rate of breastfeeding practice. There were no statistical differences in maternal outcomes (postpartum hemorrhage, third-or-four-degree laceration) or neonatal outcomes (Apgar< 7 at 5 min; birth weight < 2500 gr; macrosomia; shoulder dystocia, neonatal care transfer). DISCUSSION: There were differences in transfers from MLU to OU between nulliparous and multiparous; the main reason for transfer is the request for analgesia. Epidural analgesia should be considered when analyzing maternal outcomes. CONCLUSION: An alongside midwifery-led unit is a safe option with a low incidence of complications. This model of care can be positively implemented at the Public Healthcare System.

AIM: The study explores the experiences of women with low-risk pregnancies and no complications who planned a home birth. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire. METHODS: The questionnaire included socio-demographic, obstetric and perinatal variables. Birth satisfaction was evaluated via the Spanish version of the childbirth experience questionnaire. The study group comprised home-birthing women in Catalonia, Spain. Data were collected from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2021. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS. RESULTS: A total of 236 women responded. They reported generally positive experiences, with professional support and involvement being the most highly rated dimensions. Better childbirth experiences were associated with labour lasting less than 12 h, no perineal injuries, no intrapartum transfers to hospital, euthocic delivery and the presence of a midwife. CONCLUSIONS: Women's positive home birth experiences were linked to active participation and midwife support. Multiparous women felt safer. Medical interventions, especially transfers to hospitals, reduced satisfaction, highlighting the need for improved care during home births. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND PATIENT CARE: Home births should be included among the birthplace options offered by public health services, given the extremely positive feedback reported by women who gave birth at home. IMPACT: Home birth is not an option offered under Catalonia's public health system only as a private service. The experience of home-birthing women is unknown. This study shows a very positive birth experience due to greater participation and midwife support. The results help stakeholders assess home birth's public health inclusion and understand valued factors, supporting home-birthing women. REPORTING METHOD: The study followed the STROBE checklist guidelines for cross-sectional studies. PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Women who planned a home birth participated in the pilot test to validate the instrument, and their contributions were collected by the lead researcher. The questionnaire gathered the participants' email addresses, and a commitment was made to disseminate the study's results through this means.
