RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bruising is a common abusive injury in children, and it is standard practice to image and measure them, yet there is no current standard for measuring bruise size consistently. We aim to identify the optimal method of measuring photographic images of bruises, including computerised measurement techniques. METHODS: 24 children aged <11 years (mean age of 6.9, range 2.5-10 years) with a bruise were recruited from the community. Demographics and bruise details were recorded. Each bruise was measured in vivo using a paper measuring tape. Standardised conventional and cross polarized digital images were obtained. The diameter of bruise images were measured by three computer aided measurement techniques: Image J (segmentation with Simple Interactive Object Extraction (maximum Feret diameter), 'Circular Selection Tool' (Circle diameter), & the Photoshop 'ruler' software (Photoshop diameter)). Inter and intra-observer effects were determined by two individuals repeating 11 electronic measurements, and relevant Intraclass Correlation Coefficient's (ICC's) were used to establish reliability. Spearman's rank correlation was used to compare in vivo with computerised measurements; a comparison of measurement techniques across imaging modalities was conducted using Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. Significance was set at p < 0.05 for all tests. RESULTS: Images were available for 38 bruises in vivo, with 48 bruises visible on cross polarized imaging and 46 on conventional imaging (some bruises interpreted as being single in vivo appeared to be multiple in digital images). Correlation coefficients were >0.5 for all techniques, with maximum Feret diameter and maximum Photoshop diameter on conventional images having the strongest correlation with in vivo measurements. There were significant differences between in vivo and computer-aided measurements, but none between different computer-aided measurement techniques. Overall, computer aided measurements appeared larger than in vivo. Inter- and intra-observer agreement was high for all maximum diameter measurements (ICC's > 0.7). CONCLUSIONS: Whilst there are minimal differences between measurements of images obtained, the most consistent results were obtained when conventional images, segmented by Image J Software, were measured with a Feret diameter. This is therefore proposed as a standard for future research, and forensic practice, with the proviso that all computer aided measurements appear larger than in vivo.

RESUMO

There is increasing interest in using the cyanogenic properties of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to develop a nonmicrobiological method for its detection. Prior to this, the variation in cyanide production between different P. aeruginosa strains needs to be investigated. Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) released into the gas phase by 96 genotyped P. aeruginosa samples was measured using selected ion flow tube-mass spectrometry after 24, 48, 72 and 96 h of incubation. The HCN produced by a range of non-P. aeruginosa cultures and incubated blank plates was also measured. All P. aeruginosa strains produced more HCN than the control samples, which generated extremely low levels. Analysis across all time-points demonstrated that nonmucoid samples produced more HCN than the mucoid samples (p=0.003), but this relationship varied according to strain. There were clear differences in the headspace HCN concentration for different strains. Multivariate analysis of headspace HCN for the commonest strains (Liverpool, Midlands_1 and Stoke-on-Trent, UK) revealed a significant effect of strain (p<0.001) and a borderline interaction of strain and phenotype (p=0.051). This evidence confirms that all P. aeruginosa strains produce HCN but to varying degrees and generates interest in the possible future clinical applications of the cyanogenic properties of P. aeruginosa.

RESUMO

A cavity-enhanced absorption spectrometer was used to saturate several lines of ammonia in the 1510 nm - 1560 nm region. Analysis of power broadening of the saturated absorption feature for one of the ammonia lines yielded a dipole moment value comparable to that of the lines in the nu(1)+nu(3) band in acetylene. Highly reproducible frequency measurements of four ammonia line centres were carried out using a frequency comb generated by a mode-locked Cr(4+):YAG laser. These results demonstrate the possible application of ammonia saturated absorption lines for frequency metrology and calibration in a spectral region lacking strong absorbers. To our knowledge, this is the first frequency measurement of saturated absorption lines in ammonia at near infrared frequencies and the first reported observation of saturated absorption lines in the nu(1)+2nu(4) band.

RESUMO

A cavity stabilized, SESAM mode-locked Cr4+:YAG laser capable of generating sub-100 fs pulses has been developed. Locking the 130-MHz pulse repetition frequency to that of a hydrogen maser-referenced frequency synthesizer provides a 30-nm wide frequency comb for the 1530-nm wavelength region. In conjunction with a pair of acetylene stabilized, external cavity diode lasers, this laser provides a high precision measurement tool for the determination of acetylene transition frequencies.

RESUMO

Optical-to-optical conversion efficiencies of as high as 32% with a slope efficiency of 44% were obtained with a novel diode-bar, side-pumped laser cavity design. A slab geometry with a single, high-angle-of-incidence reflection was used to extract gain from near the pump face of a Nd:YVO(4) bar that absorbed strongly at the pump wavelength. Small-signal gains of greater than 8 cm(-1) and pulse energies of as much as 3.2 mJ were obtained in an almost TEM(00) mode. Aperturing effects by the laser rod were found to limit the effects of nonuniform gain on the laser mode.

RESUMO

Data from the medical records of 113 patients living in Manitoba who had contracted respiratory poliomyelitis between 1952 and 1959 were compared with information obtained from interviews with these patients in 1980. The study was designed to determine whether the patients' respiratory function, mobility, ability to perform daily tasks, and employment, residential and marital status had changed between 1 year after the onset of polio and 1980. The patients' dependence on mechanical aids and other people was also studied. More than half (56%) of the patients perceived their respiratory impairment to be the same as it was 1 year after the onset of polio, 27% perceived the impairment to be increased, and 17% perceived it to be decreased. There was an association between level of respiratory function, mobility and ability to perform daily tasks. The 69 patients who lived at home had better respiratory function, mobility and ability to perform daily tasks than the 24 patients who were assisted by a home care program and the 20 who lived in hospital. The latter group had the lowest levels of respiratory and functional ability.

RESUMO

Modest-energy-density KrF laser radiation has been used to provide uniform preionization in a 5-atm, 2.5 X 2.5- cm2 XeCl discharge. With approximately 1 mJ/cm2 of KrF radiation and the utilization of benzene additives at the level of a few parts in 10(6), an initial ionization density of approximately 10(7) cm(-3) is produced. The technique is scalable to large volumes and provides an effective means of controlling the pre ionization conditions.

RESUMO

This paper reports on a review of 518 Psychiatric Court Examination conducted at the Ottawa Court House in 1972-1973. Characteristics of the sample are described, and an attempt is made to relate the effects of some of these characteristics to decisions resulting from the psychiatric examination. It was concluded that those examinations help to identify obviously mentally distubed persons, advise the Court about the mental condition of people first appearing in Court, and do not unduly alter the legal process.
