RESUMO

The Open Knowledgebase of Interatomic Models (OpenKIM) is a framework intended to facilitate access to standardized implementations of interatomic models for molecular simulations along with computational protocols to evaluate them. These protocols include tests to compute material properties predicted by models and verification checks to assess their coding integrity. While housing this content in a unified, publicly available environment constitutes a major step forward for the molecular modeling community, it further presents the opportunity to understand the range of validity of interatomic models and their suitability for specific target applications. To this end, OpenKIM includes a computational pipeline that runs tests and verification checks using all available interatomic models contained within the OpenKIM Repository at https://openkim.org. The OpenKIM Processing Pipeline is built on a set of Docker images hosted on distributed, heterogeneous hardware and utilizes open-source software to automatically run test-model and verification check-model pairs and resolve dependencies between them. The design philosophy and implementation choices made in the development of the pipeline are discussed as well as an example of its application to interatomic model selection.

RESUMO

Near-field radiation allows heat to propagate across a small vacuum gap at rates several orders of magnitude above that of far-field, blackbody radiation. Although heat transfer via near-field effects has been discussed for many years, experimental verification of this theory has been very limited. We have measured the heat transfer between two macroscopic sapphire plates, finding an increase in agreement with expectations from theory. These experiments, conducted near 300 K, have measured the heat transfer as a function of separation over mm to µm and as a function of temperature differences between 2.5 and 30 K. The experiments demonstrate that evanescence can be put to work to transfer heat from an object without actually touching it.

RESUMO

As part of a medico-social survey in a rural population in the northern part of Iran, data concerning opium users was collected from randomly chosen households. The addiction rate was found to be 69/1000. The rate of registered addicts in the same population is 11/1000. The population in terms of registered addicts seems to be very small, but this is only the tip of the iceberg and does not reflect the true picture within the society. In view of the traditional use of opium in the country, the problem of addiction may become serious unless adequate and effective measures are taken.
