Background: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are 4-6 times more frequent among men than among women, but prognosis tends to be worse in women. Objective: To compare endovascular procedures to repair infrarenal AAA in men and women, using data from a prospective registry. Methods: This registry collected data from five university hospitals in the state of São Paulo (Brazil) from 2012 to 2022. A cross-sectional study was conducted compiling demographic data, anatomic variables (aneurysm diameter, short neck, angulated neck, calcified neck, or thrombosed neck; distal neck < 1.5 cm, and tortuous, abnormal iliac arteries), complications (leaks, conversions, and patency or stenosis of branches) and renal failure and mortality at 30 days. The chi-square test and Student's t test were applied with a 5% significance level. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee (process 4040-2011). Results: A total of 152 (15.9%) of the patients were women and 799 (84.0%) were men (p < 0.05). The majority were white (80.2% of the women and 87.4% of the men). Diabetes and hypertension were significantly more frequent among the women. The most prevalent shape was fusiform, particularly among the women (95.39% vs. 89.86% among men). Mean diameter was smaller among the women (5.96 cm vs. 6.49 cm; p = 0.0056). The iliac arteries were less often involved among the women (89.40% vs. 73.58%; p = 0.00001). Blood loss was greater in the men (321.40 ml vs. 168.84 ml among the women; p < 0.05). Operative mortality was similar in both sexes, but obstructions were more frequent among the women (15.2% vs. 13.51%; p = 0.017296). Conclusions: Aneurysmal diameter was smaller and obstructive complications were more frequent among women.

Land use and land cover changes (LULCC) are a global environmental issue that has impacted biogeochemical cycles worldwide. Sedimentary records can demonstrate the effects of LULCC on aquatic ecosystems, where the recent urbanization has been linked to changes in carbon and nitrogen burial. In this study, we reconstructed long-term LULCC and sedimentary records of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sediment burial rates in a eutrophic tropical coastal lagoon affected by recent urban expansion. Based on analyses of 30 years of satellite imagery and sedimentary records from 1932 to 2013, we revealed that urban expansion over low-productivity agricultural-pasture areas increased siltation and C, N, P concentrations and fluxes in the coastal lagoon. Large temporal variability of such parameters revealed not only the effects of LULCC on the lagoon's burial rates, but also the influence of artificial sand barrier openings, which connect the studied lagoon to the sea, reducing C, N, P, and particle deposition in the sediment. Our results support multi-proxy methods to assess the relationships between recent urbanization, rising C, N, and P burial rates, and the eutrophication process. We highlight that artificial sandbar openings, the current eutrophication management strategy for coastal lagoons, are ineffective in reducing the eutrophication state, even in the recent scenario of decreasing C, N, and P burial rates.

Streptococcus suis negatively impacts swine health, posing diagnostic and preventative challenges. S. suis can induce disease and also quietly reside on mucosal surfaces. The limited use of diagnostic tools to identify disease-associated strains and rule out differential diagnoses, alongside the complex ecology of S. suis, poses significant challenges in comprehending this important pathogen and defining pathotypes. This study evaluated 2,379 S. suis central nervous system (CNS) isolates from diagnostic submissions between 2015 and 2019. Isolates originating from submissions with histologic evidence of CNS infection (n = 1,032) were further characterized by standard and advanced diagnostic techniques. We identified 29 S. suis serotypes and 4 reclassified serotypes as putative causes of CNS disease. Among these, serotypes 1 and 7 emerged as the predominant putative causes of CNS infection (32% of submissions). Furthermore, 51 sequence types (STs), of which 15 were novel, were detected with ST1 predominating. Through whole-genome sequencing of 145 isolates, we observed that five commonly used virulence-associated genes (VAGs; epf, mrp, sly, ofs, and srtF) were not present in most disease-associated isolates, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) yielded false-positive results in 7% of isolates. These data indicate that (i) clinical signs and site of isolation alone are insufficient for defining a pathotype, (ii) S. suis serotypes and STs associated with CNS infection are more diverse than previously reported, (iii) MALDI-TOF MS may need to be supplemented with additional diagnostic tools for precise S. suis identification, and (iv) VAGs remain an unreliable means for identifying isolates associated with CNS disease.IMPORTANCEStreptococcus suis is an important and complex systemic bacterial pathogen of swine. Characterization of S. suis strains originating from pigs with histologic confirmation of neurologic disease is limited. Review of swine diagnostic submissions revealed that fewer than half of cases from which S. suis was isolated from the brain had histologic evidence of neurologic disease. This finding demonstrates that clinical signs and site of isolation alone are not sufficient for identifying a neurologic disease-associated strain. Characterization of strains originating from cases with evidence of disease using classic and advanced diagnostic techniques revealed that neurologic disease-associated strains are diverse and commonly lack genes previously associated with virulence.

Coral reefs rely heavily on reef fish for their health, yet overfishing has resulted in their decline, leading to an increase in fast-growing algae and changes in reef ecosystems, a phenomenon described as the phase-shift. A clearer understanding of the intricate interplay between herbivorous, their food, and their gut microbiomes could enhance reef health. This study examines the gut microbiome and isotopic markers (δ13C and δ15N) of four key nominally herbivorous reef fish species (Acanthurus chirurgus, Kyphosus sp., Scarus trispinosus, and Sparisoma axillare) in the Southwestern Atlantic's Abrolhos Reef systems. Approximately 16.8 million 16S rRNA sequences were produced for the four fish species, with an average of 317,047 ± 57,007 per species. Bacteria such as Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Cyanobacteria were prevalent in their microbiomes. These fish show unique microbiomes that result from co-diversification, diet, and restricted movement. Coral-associated bacteria (Endozoicomonas, Rhizobia, and Ruegeria) were found in abundance in the gut contents of the parrotfish species Sc. trispinosus and Sp. axillare. These parrotfishes could aid coral health by disseminating such beneficial bacteria across the reef. Meanwhile, Kyphosus sp. predominantly had Pirellulaceae and Rhodobacteraceae. Four fish species had a diet composed of turf components (filamentous Cyanobacteria) and brown algae (Dictyopteris). They also had similar isotopic niches, suggesting they shared food sources. A significant difference was observed between the isotopic signature of fish muscular gut tissue and gut contents, pointing to the role that host genetics and gut microbes play in differentiating fish tissues.

INTRODUCTION: Piloting an aircraft is a complex multitasking activity that involves managing information in a nonautomatic way and generates a high workload (psychological, cognitive, and physical) for the pilot. The excess of these demands can result in decreased performance and may impair flight safety. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used in recent studies as a method to investigate operator's workload in complex environments. This measure can assess the stress and recovery ability of the autonomic nervous system. However, a better understanding of flight influence on the pilot's autonomic modulation is necessary. Therefore, this scoping review aims to systematically map the studies related to changes in the autonomic modulation in military pilots during flight, in order to characterize their workload at different times and flight profiles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE (by PubMed), SCOPUS, and LILACS databases. Recent records (2002-2022) that analyzed HRV in military pilots during flight were included. Meanwhile, studies in which piloting activity was not performed were excluded. The study was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline extension for Scoping Reviews and the Updated Methodological Guidance for the Conduct of Scoping Reviews. RESULTS: A total of 298 records were obtained, of which 19 were included in the scoping review. The studies analyzed flights performed in high- and low-performance aircrafts, helicopters, and flight simulators, using time domain, frequency domain, and nonlinear HRV indices. Real and simulated flights produced significant autonomic changes. Some flights elicited autonomic nervous system responses that persisted up to 5 h after landing. During real flight, the most sensitive indices for identifying variations in pilot workload were root mean square of successive differences between normal heartbeats, standard deviation of interbeat interval of normal sinus beat (SDNN), ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency power, and Poincaré plot standard deviation perpendicular to the line of identity (SD1), whereas the interbeat interval (RR), SDNN, SD1, and Poincaré plot standard deviation along the line of identity (SD2) were the most sensitive indices when comparing segments of simulated flight with different levels of difficulty. CONCLUSIONS: This scoping review provided insight into the influence of flight on autonomic modulation in military pilots. Some key themes were highlighted: Increased sympathetic activity during flight, sensibility of different domains of HRV to flight demands, and autonomic changes during recovery time. Future research efforts may allow us to enhance the understanding of pilot's workload limits and to elucidate the optimal postflight recovery time.

This study evaluated the use of endemic enteric coronaviruses polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-negative testing results as an alternative approach to detect the emergence of animal health threats with similar clinical diseases presentation. This retrospective study, conducted in the United States, used PCR-negative testing results from porcine samples tested at six veterinary diagnostic laboratories. As a proof of concept, the database was first searched for transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) negative submissions between January 1st, 2010, through April 29th, 2013, when the first porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) case was diagnosed. Secondly, TGEV- and PEDV-negative submissions were used to detect the porcine delta coronavirus (PDCoV) emergence in 2014. Lastly, encountered best detection algorithms were implemented to prospectively monitor the 2023 enteric coronavirus-negative submissions. Time series (weekly TGEV-negative counts) and Seasonal Autoregressive-Integrated Moving-Average (SARIMA) were used to control for outliers, trends, and seasonality. The SARIMA's fitted and residuals were then subjected to anomaly detection algorithms (EARS, EWMA, CUSUM, Farrington) to identify alarms, defined as weeks of higher TGEV-negativity than what was predicted by models preceding the PEDV emergence. The best-performing detection algorithms had the lowest false alarms (number of alarms detected during the baseline) and highest time to detect (number of weeks between the first alarm and PEDV emergence). The best-performing detection algorithms were CUSUM, EWMA, and Farrington flexible using SARIMA fitted values, having a lower false alarm rate and identified alarms 4 to 17 weeks before PEDV and PDCoV emergences. No alarms were identified in the 2023 enteric negative testing results. The negative-based monitoring system functioned in the case of PEDV propagating epidemic and in the presence of a concurrent propagating epidemic with the PDCoV emergence. It demonstrated its applicability as an additional tool for diagnostic data monitoring of emergent pathogens having similar clinical disease as the monitored endemic pathogens.

Reservoir construction promotes many environmental impacts, including the enhancement of mercury concentrations in fish. The processes that can influence mercury concentrations in fish in Amazonian reservoirs are still little explored in depth, especially when we consider the possible particularities of the ecosystems in question. This study aims to investigate how mercury concentrations in fish could be influenced by the Tucuruí dam, considering possible changes in their feeding and trophic position according to the dam position (up or downstream). Fish were sampled upstream and downstream of the Tucuruí reservoir, and total mercury (THg) and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen (δ15N and δ13C) were measured in muscles. We observed three different Hg bioaccumulation patterns influenced by the dam. These differences occurred due to species trophic niche changes corroborated by the isotope analysis. Higher THg concentrations downstream compared to those upstream ones were only observed for Geophagus proximus. On the contrary, Plagioscion squamosissimus, from downstream, presented lower concentrations than upstream ones. The isotopic niche of these two species presented different changes according to the sampled site. THg biomagnification was higher upstream compared to downstream, considering that the regression slope was approximately two times higher upstream versus downstream. THg concentrations in fish were explained by the differences in their feeding habits according to their location in relation to the dam. The difference in THg biomagnification was able to reflect differences in structure of the food web chain in ecosystems under the dam's influence.

Aquatic macrophytes are the main autochthonous component of primary production in the Amazon Basin. Floating meadows of these plants support habitats with highly diverse animal communities. Fishes inhabiting these habitats have been assumed to use a broad range of food items and compose a particular food web. We employed carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope analysis to draw the trophic structure of these habitats and to trace the energy flow by its trophic levels. Fishes and other animals from 18 independent macrophyte meadows of a floodplain lake of the Solimões River (Amazonia, Brazil) were analyzed. The food web of macrophyte meadows consists of four trophic levels above autotrophic sources. In general, primary consumers exhibited a broader range of food sources than the upper trophic levels. Some fish species depended on a large number of food sources and at the same time are consumed by several predators. The energy transfer from one trophic level to the next was then mainly accomplished by these species concentrating a high-energy flux and acting as hubs in the food web. The broad range of δ13C values observed indicates that the organisms living in the macrophyte meadows utilize a great diversity of autotrophic sources.

This experiment aimed to evaluate commercially available disinfectants and their application methods against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) on truck cab surfaces. Plastic, fabric, and rubber surfaces inoculated with PEDV or PRRSV were placed in a full-scale truck cab and then treated with one of eight randomly assigned disinfectant treatments. After application, surfaces were environmentally sampled with cotton gauze and tested for PEDV and PRRSV using qPCR duplex analysis. There was a disinfectant × surface interaction (p < 0.0001), indicating a detectable amount of PEDV or PRRSV RNA was impacted by disinfectant treatment and surface material. For rubber surfaces, 10% bleach application had lower detectable amounts of RNA compared to all other treatments (p < 0.05) except Intervention via misting fumigation, which was intermediate. In both fabric and plastic surfaces, there was no evidence (p > 0.05) of a difference in detectable RNA between disinfectant treatments. For disinfectant treatments, fabric surfaces with no chemical treatment had less detectable viral RNA compared to the corresponding plastic and rubber (p < 0.05). Intervention applied via pump sprayer to fabric surfaces had less detectable viral RNA than plastic (p < 0.05). Furthermore, 10% bleach applied via pump sprayer to fabric and rubber surfaces had less detectable viral RNA than plastic (p < 0.05). Also, a 10 h downtime, with no chemical application or gaseous fumigation for 10 h, applied to fabric surfaces had less detectable viral RNA than other surfaces (p < 0.05). Sixteen treatments were evaluated via swine bioassay, but all samples failed to produce infectivity. In summary, commercially available disinfectants successfully reduced detectable viral RNA on surfaces but did not eliminate viral genetic material, highlighting the importance of bioexclusion of pathogens of interest.

Veterinary care for rabbits has been growing, and, consequently, the anesthetic and analgesic management of this species must be improved. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the technique of localization of the epidural space with the aid of a peripheral nerve stimulator and epidurographic, comparing two techniques for determining the infused volume in rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus). In a prospective, randomized blinded study, six healthy New Zealand rabbits, adults, and weighing from 2.2 kg to 3.8 kg received two treatments, at 1 week intervals: 0.33 mL/kg (treatment I) or 0.05 mL per centimeter of the spine (treatment II) of ioexol epidurally. In both treatments, a peripheral nerve stimulator (2 Hz, 0.25 mA and 0.1 milliseconds) was used to determine the location of the epidural space. Latero-lateral and ventro-dorsal radiographs were taken after five (T5) and twenty-five minutes (T25) of iohexol administration. The epidural space was correctly accessed in 92% of attempts. Treatment I received a smaller volume of contrast than treatment II, 1.0 ± 0.2 mL versus 2.1 ± 0.1 mL (mean ± standard deviation), respectively (p = 0.007). At T5, the cranial progression of the contrast varied between L4 and L5 in treatment I, and L5 and T10 in treatment II. At T25, no contrast was observed in any rabbit. In conclusion, peripheral nerve stimulator aided in accessing the lumbosacral epidural space, and the administration of 0.05 mL per centimeter of the spine resulted in greater cranial progression of contrast.

INTRODUCTION: Sporotrichosis, a zoonosis caused by animal, mainly cat, scratches or bites, is caused by fungi belonging to the Sporothrix complex. Treatment usually consists in antifungal administration, although treatment failure and hepatotoxicity reports have been noted. Alternative sporotrichosis treatment methods, such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), may, therefore, be indicated. CASE REPORT: In this context, this study followed a 56-year-old male renal transplanted patient displaying disseminated sporotrichosis, presenting erythematous skin lesions with ulcerated backgrounds and hardened consistency on the nose, oral and scalp. The lesions were present for about 2 months and the patient coexisted with cats. Intravenous amphotericin B administration was initiated, and immunosuppression was suspended. Seven aPDT sessions were also performed in 48 h intervals on the oral lesions, employing 0.01% methylene blue gel as the photosensitizing agent. After the 4th aPDT session, the patient was discharged, amphotericin B administration was suspended, and the treatment was continued with itraconazole, without immunosuppression. Red laser was applied to the oral lesions after the 7th aPDT session. Significant lesion improvement was observed after the final aPDT session and complete palate lesion repair was noted after two red laser sessions. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that aPDT is a valuable strategy as an adjunct sporotrichosis treatment.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of disease associated with endemic bacterial agents in pig populations is challenging due to their commensal ecology, the lack of disease-specific antemortem diagnostic tests, and the polymicrobial nature of swine diagnostic cases. The main objective of this retrospective study was to estimate temporal patterns of agent detection and disease diagnosis for five endemic bacteria that can cause systemic disease in porcine tissue specimens submitted to the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL) from 2017 to 2022. The study also explored the diagnostic value of specific tissue specimens for disease diagnosis, estimated the frequency of polymicrobial diagnosis, and evaluated the association between phase of pig production and disease diagnosis. RESULTS: S. suis and G. parasuis bronchopneumonia increased on average 6 and 4.3%, while S. suis endocarditis increased by 23% per year, respectively. M. hyorhinis and A. suis associated serositis increased yearly by 4.2 and 12.8%, respectively. A significant upward trend in M. hyorhinis arthritis cases was also observed. In contrast, M. hyosynoviae arthritis cases decreased by 33% average/year. Investigation into the diagnostic value of tissues showed that lungs were the most frequently submitted sample, However, the use of lung for systemic disease diagnosis requires caution due to the commensal nature of these agents in the respiratory system, compared to systemic sites that diagnosticians typically target. This study also explored associations between phase of production and specific diseases caused by each agent, showcasing the role of S. suis arthritis in suckling pigs, meningitis in early nursery and endocarditis in growing pigs, and the role of G. parasuis, A. suis, M. hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae disease mainly in post-weaning phases. Finally, this study highlighted the high frequency of co-detection and -disease diagnosis with other infectious etiologies, such as PRRSV and IAV, demonstrating that to minimize the health impact of these endemic bacterial agents it is imperative to establish effective viral control programs. CONCLUSIONS: Results from this retrospective study demonstrated significant increases in disease diagnosis for S. suis, G. parasuis, M. hyorhinis, and A. suis, and a significant decrease in detection and disease diagnosis of M. hyosynoviae. High frequencies of interactions between these endemic agents and with viral pathogens was also demonstrated. Consequently, improved control programs are needed to mitigate the adverse effect of these endemic bacterial agents on swine health and wellbeing. This includes improving diagnostic procedures, developing more effective vaccine products, fine-tuning antimicrobial approaches, and managing viral co-infections.

Pichinde virus (PICV) can infect several animal species and has been developed as a safe and effective vaccine vector. Our previous study showed that pigs vaccinated with a recombinant PICV-vectored vaccine expressing the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of an H3N2 influenza A virus of swine (IAV-S) developed virus-neutralizing antibodies and were protected against infection by the homologous H3N2 strain. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a trivalent PICV-vectored vaccine expressing HA antigens from the three co-circulating IAV-S subtypes: H1N1, H1N2, and H3N2. Pigs immunized with the trivalent PICV vaccine developed virus-neutralizing (VN) and hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibodies against all three matching IAV-S. Following challenge infection with the H1N1 strain, five of the six pigs vaccinated with the trivalent vaccine had no evidence of IAV-S RNA genomes in nasal swabs and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, while all non-vaccinated control pigs showed high number of copies of IAV-S genomic RNA in these two types of samples. Overall, our results demonstrate that the trivalent PICV-vectored vaccine elicits antibody responses against the three targeted IAV-S strains and provides protection against homologous virus challenges in pigs. Therefore, PICV exhibits the potential to be explored as a viral vector for delivering multiple vaccine antigens in swine.

The recently emerged PRRSV 1-4-4 L1C variant (L1C.5) was in vivo and in vitro characterized in this study in comparison with three other contemporary 1-4-4 isolates (L1C.1, L1A, and L1H) and one 1-7-4 L1A isolate. Seventy-two 3-week-old PRRSV-naive pigs were divided into six groups with twelve pigs/group. Forty-eight pigs (eight/group) were for inoculation, and 24 pigs (four/group) served as contact pigs. Pigs in pen A of each room were inoculated with the corresponding virus or negative media. At two days post inoculation (DPI), contact pigs were added to pen B adjacent to pen A in each room. Pigs were necropsied at 10 and 28 DPI. Compared to other virus-inoculated groups, the L1C.5-inoculated pigs exhibited more severe anorexia and lethargy, higher mortality, a higher fraction of pigs with fever (>40 °C), higher average temperature at several DPIs, and higher viremia levels at 2 DPI. A higher percentage of the contact pigs in the L1C.5 group became viremic at two days post contact, implying the higher transmissibility of this virus strain. It was also found that some PRRSV isolates caused brain infection in inoculation pigs and/or contact pigs. The complete genome sequences and growth characteristics in ZMAC cells of five PRRSV-2 isolates were further compared. Collectively, this study confirms that the PRRSV 1-4-4 L1C variant (L1C.5) is highly virulent with potential higher transmissibility, but the genetic determinants of virulence remain to be elucidated.

In this study, we developed and validated (1) singleplex real-time RT-PCR assays for specific detection of five PRRSV-2 MLV vaccine viruses (Ingelvac MLV, Ingelvac ATP, Fostera, Prime Pac, and Prevacent) and (2) a four-plex real-time RT-PCR assay (IngelvacMLV/Fostera/Prevacent/XIPC) including the internal positive control XIPC for detecting and distinguishing the three most commonly used vaccines in the USA (Prevacent, Ingelvac MLV, and Fostera). The singleplex and 4-plex vaccine-like PCRs and the reference PCR (VetMAXTM PRRSV NA&EU, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA) did not cross-react with non-PRRSV swine viral and bacterial pathogens. The limits of detection of vaccine-like PCRs ranged from 25 to 50 genomic copies/reactions. The vaccine-like PCRs all had excellent intra-assay and inter-assay repeatability. Based on the testing of 531 clinical samples and in comparison to the reference PCR, the diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and agreement were in the respective range of 94.67-100%, 100%, and 97.78-100% for singleplex PCRs and 94.94-100%, 100%, and 97.78-100% for the 4-plex PCR, with a CT cutoff of 37. In addition, 45 PRRSV-2 isolates representing different genetic lineages/sublineages were tested with the vaccine-like PCRs and the results were verified with sequencing. In summary, the vaccine-like PCRs specifically detect the respective vaccine-like viruses with comparable performances to the reference PCR, and the 4-plex PCR allows to simultaneously detect and differentiate the three most commonly used vaccine viruses in the same sample. PRRSV-2 vaccine-like PCRs provide an additional tool for detecting and characterizing PRRSV-2.

In this study, we measured Ni, Co, Cd, and Pb concentrations in the whole blood of farmers from southeast Brazil to address the factors influencing human exposure in this population. The factors included smoking, alcohol consumption, aging, body composition, gender, and feeding preferences, which were measured through carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition. We also calculated and compared the reference values (RVs) of the measured elements to evaluate ongoing exposure levels. We observed the influence of lifestyle habits on metal exposure; Cd levels were statistically higher in smokers, and alcohol consumption affected only Pb concentrations, with an association also observed with the frequency of alcohol ingestion. The metal levels were positively associated with both isotope values, indicating that feeding may be the dominant source of these elements in this population. We also observed the effect of endogenous sources measured through age, as increased Pb concentrations in both genders and higher Cd levels in older women, which is related to bone, kidney, and liver accumulation. The body mass index was negatively associated with Ni, Co, and Cd in women and positively in men. The negative associations may indicate that body fat may act as a reservoir for metals, reducing their availability in the blood in individuals with higher body mass and possibly influencing the assessment of exposure levels. The evaluated population presented elevated RVs for all elements: Ni 36, Co 3.3, Cd 16, and Pb 149 µg L-1. These values point to higher exposure in this population compared to other studies in Brazil and worldwide. These results emphasize an urgent need for monitoring programs for toxic substances in Brazil and evaluating possible health effects, given the ongoing environmental exposure associated with endogenous exposure and lifestyle habits that promote higher metal levels in this population.

The Paraíba do Sul River (PSR) Basin is a crucial drainage basin in Southeast Brazil, being the most industrialized and densely populated region in the country. Over the last three decades, the basin has been the subject of numerous studies due to its long history of mercury (Hg) contamination. This makes the PSR Basin an excellent model to evaluate Hg cycling, which is a priority for signatory countries of the Minamata Convention, which includes Brazil. This review compiled data on Hg from five environmental compartments (animals, plants, sediment, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and water), three different sectors (upper, middle, and lower) and five different ecosystems (reservoir, mangrove, fluvial, estuarine, and coastal) from 60 published studies, aiming to understand the Hg cycling through meta-analyses. The highest concentrations of Hg were observed in the upper and middle sectors of the basin, which are areas with high industrialization and urbanization levels. Among the evaluated ecosystems, hydropower reservoirs showed the highest medians and were also frequent in the upper and middle portions of the PSR basin. Over the years, all environmental compartments showed a decline in Hg concentrations due to the implementation of federal and state environmental policies. The main source of Hg for the basin was Hg-rich soils from past activities (such as artisanal small-scale gold mining and the use of organomercurial fungicides in sugarcane plantations). These results can assist decision-makers in the management of the basin's ecosystems and can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Minamata Convention in the region.

Titanium with nanotopography (Ti Nano) favors osteoblast differentiation and attenuates the osteoclast inhibitory effects on osteoblasts. Because the interactions between nanotopography and osteoclasts are underexplored, the aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of Ti Nano on osteoclast differentiation and activity, and the influence of osteoblasts on osteoclast-Ti Nano interaction. The discs were conditioned with a mixture of 10 N H2SO4 and 30% aqueous H2O2 to create Ti Nano and non-conditioned Ti discs were used as control (Ti Control). Osteoclasts were cultured on Ti Control and Ti Nano in the presence of osteoblasts in an indirect co-culture system. Also, osteoclasts were cultured on polystyrene and calcium phosphate plates in conditioned media by osteoblasts grown on Ti Control and Ti Nano. While Ti Control exhibited an irregular and smooth surface, Ti Nano presented nanopores distributed throughout the whole surface. Additionally, anisotropy was higher on Ti Nano than Ti Control. Nanotopography favored the gene expression of osteoclast markers but inhibited osteoclast differentiation and activity, and the presence of osteoblasts enhanced the effects of Ti Nano on osteoclasts. Such findings were mimicked by conditioned medium of osteoblasts cultured on Ti Nano, which reduced the osteoclast differentiation and activity. In conclusion, our results indicated that nanotopography regulates osteoblast-osteoclast crosstalk and further investigations should focus the impact of these bone cell interactions on Ti osseointegration.

The Brazilian sardine (Sardinella aurita) is an important food resource found in the subtropical Southwestern Atlantic Continental Shelf (CSSWA), but limited information about its metal(loid) concentrations is available, restricting effective risk assessment by its consumption. On this research, we hypothesized that S. aurita presents different metal(loid) concentrations within a latitudinal gradient in the CSSWA (northern and southern sectors). We also assessed the S. aurita consumption contamination risk in both sectors of the CSSWA. The results indicated that S. aurita might present different chemical and contamination profiles between the observed sectors, with highlights to As, Cr, and Fe at greater levels than the safety limits established by regulatory agencies. Such finds could be explained by urbanization, industrialization, continental and oceanographic processes along the CSSWA, corroborating our hypothesis for most observed metals(loid). On the other hand, our risk assessment analysis of metal(loid) concentrations did not indicate hazards for human consumption.

This study assessed black carbon (BC) dynamics, concentrations, and the organic matter (OM) isotopic carbon composition in northeastern South America drainage basin coastal sediments. Paraíba do Sul (PSR; Atlantic Rainforest, Brazil) coastal sediments displayed more 13C-enriched values (-22.6 ± 1.3 [n = 13]) than Amazon and Sinnamary (Amazon Rainforest in French Guiana and Brazil) sediments (-25.0 ± 3.1 [n = 14] and - 26.1 ± 1.0 [n = 6], respectively), indicating that local land-use basin changes have altered the OM composition, i.e., from natural C3 plant to C4 plants contributions. BC contents normalized to total organic carbon (TOC) content were 0.32 ± 0.24 (n = 8), 0.73 ± 0.67 (n = 6), and 0.95 ± 0.74 (n = 13) mg g-1 TOC for Amazon, Sinnamary and PSR samples, respectively, with BC sources appearing to differ according to different drainage basin vegetation covers. With increasing distance from the river mouths, BC contents exhibited different trends between the coastal zones, with values increasing for the PSR and decreasing values for the Amazon samples. BC distribution in Sinnamary coastal sediments did not display specific patterns. Regarding the Amazon coastal zone, BC contents decreased while the B6CA:B5CA ratios did not show a pattern, which could indicate that BC in the area originates from river transport (aged BC) and that the hydrophobic component of dissolved BC is removed. The BC content mostly increased in the PSR coastal zone, while the B6CA:B5CA ratios were not altered for the entire gradient, indicating the BC stability and possible atmospheric deposition of soot. Our findings indicate that different sources, transformation processes, and hydrological conditions affect BC contents within coastal zones. Continuous land cover changes in both the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforests may result in large-scale marine carbon cycling impacts.
