RESUMO

Health security has gained significant attention at the national and global levels, "security" is not a simple term; instead, it is "essentially contested" - that is, it induces debates about what it means and how to use it. This study aimed to define three terms frequently used in health security discussions. These terms are national health security, Global Health Security, and public health. The research method was a scoping review performed in three stages. The first stage was electronic searching based on selection criteria among multiple sources at various time points during the year 2023. These sources included online literature searches, websites of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other governmental health agencies. The second stage involved determining the relevance of the selected papers to the study's objectives; the selected papers had moderate to high relevance to the study's objectives. The third stage was to evaluate the methodological quality of a study; we selected peer-reviewed published papers and websites recognized as trustworthy sources of information. The search yielded 143 articles; five met the inclusion criteria and were subjected to the definition of health security. Despite proposed definitions, agreement has yet to be reached on the content and scope of health security. Another main finding is that health security requires more state and international collaboration efforts to reach Global Health Security. To the best of our knowledge, no known government body or organization is responsible for governing health security in Saudi Arabia. However, the current study presents a definition of health security and differentiates it from the public health approach, in addition to emphasizing the importance of governing the related health sectors within each country in order to improve health security and have a positive impact on overall Global Health Security.

RESUMO

Introduction Following the guidelines for maintaining quality set forth by the National Commission for Academic Accreditation and Assessment (NCAAA) accreditation procedure, Saudi higher education institutions, including health sciences colleges, must adhere to these guidelines. This study aims to assess the perception of personnel involved in NCAAA accreditation processes about the purpose, process, motivation, and level of involvement in the NCAAA accreditation at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS). Methods The study was conducted at KSAU-HS, Jeddah. The participants included 15 administrators and 32 faculties from the College of Medicine, College of Applied Medical Sciences, and College of Nursing with experience in the NCAAA process. A questionnaire was used to determine how motivated and involved people feel about the accreditation process. Data were examined statistically with SPSS (Version 23; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA), and descriptive statistics were used. Results Forty-seven participants (23 men, 24 women, ages 36 to 55) took part in the study, of which 68% were faculty members and 32% were administrators with a variety of skill sets from the three colleges. Most participants displayed a positive attitude toward the NCAAA accreditation's motive and level of commitment. Conclusions Most of the participants in the current study contended with the NCAAA process and deemed it substantial long-term improvements.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence, risk factors, and management of meningitis in cochlear implant (CI)users. METHODS: A systematic review was carried out using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register. Articles were considered relevant if reported any data on incidence, clinical presentations, the role of vaccination, management, and outcomes of meningitis after CI. RESULTS: A total of 32 studies including 27358 patients were included, and meningitis was reported in only 202 cases. Meningitis occurred in the period ranging from 1 day to 72 months after CI. A total of 55 patients received the pneumococcal vaccine, while 20 patients received the Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine. A large number of participants (n=47) had associated anatomical malformations, while 62 had otitis media before meningitis. A total of 24 cases required revision surgery along with medical treatment. Full recovery was the outcome reported by the included studies in 19 patients. CONCLUSION: Cochlear implant users seem to be at possible risk of bacterial meningitis at any time after implantation, especially in the presence of risk factors, such as otitis media and anatomical malformations of the cochlea.

RESUMO

Gold nanoparticles have excellent potential for theranostic applications, but their impact on living cells is only partially understood. Many gold nanoparticles enter cells through endosomes/lysosomes which are linked to different cell organelles and compartments. Our study focuses on the unfolded protein response (UPR) in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), cytoplasmic RNA-granules and proteostasis, because they are established indicators of cell stress and key regulators of cellular homeostasis. Using HeLa and renal proximal tubule cells as model systems, we show that gold nanourchins reduce cell proliferation, cause ER stress and impair proteostasis. Specifically, gold nanourchins activate the PERK-branch of the UPR, promote RNA oxidation, enhance P-body formation, and accumulate the oxidative stress marker Nrf2 and NFκB in nuclei. Taken together, our study demonstrates that gold nanourchins compromise ER, redox, protein, and RNA homeostasis. These insights provide new information on the cellular responses and molecular changes that gold nanourchins elicit in mammalian cells.
