RESUMO

Acne vulgaris (AV) is the eighth most common disease in the world. This condition can impair the affected patients' social and psychological functioning and lower their quality of life. In general, scar reduction, rather than complete scar removal, is the aim of AV treatment. Dermal abrasion, chemical peeling, laser resurfacing, subcision, punch methods, tissue-improving substances, and dermal fillers are the currently available therapeutic options. In this study, we focused on the rapidly developing field of dermal fillers used alone or in combination with other therapies to reconstruct skin affected by acne scars and to evaluate the improvement of facial appearance after using different types of dermal fillers.

RESUMO

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome (VKHS) is a rare inflammatory autoimmune condition that affects tissues with high melanocyte concentrations such as the skin, inner ears, eyes, and central nervous system. VKHS has previously been reported to be associated with various autoimmune diseases, but we have observed the first known co-occurrence of VKHS and lichen planus (LP). In this report, we examine the similarities between these two diseases and discuss how they relate to each other.

RESUMO

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a common contagious dermatological condition that results from reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which currently could be prevented by vaccination. We describe a rare case of varicella infection reactivation after routine zoster vaccination in an immunocompetent female in her 60s who developed dermatomal pruritic and vesicular rash one week after receiving Shingrix vaccine, along with fever, sweating, headache, and fatigue. The patient was treated as a case of herpes zoster reactivation with a seven days course of acyclovir. She continued to do well on follow-up with no significant complications. Though uncommon, it is important for healthcare providers to recognize this adverse reaction to expedite testing and treatment.

RESUMO

Presymptomatic genetic testing (PGT) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) is available for at-risk individuals. This study aimed to investigate the public perception of PGT in Saudi Arabia and determine variables that might influence the decision to undergo PGT. A questionnaire link was posted on Twitter by the Saudi Alzheimer's Disease Association and was made publicly available on social media networks. A total of 2935 people participated, of which 59.9% were willing to undergo PGT. Of these, 26.8% reported having a family history of AD, and 0.24% had two family members with early onset AD. The reasons cited for willingness to undergo PGT included the following: to adopt a healthier lifestyle, to ensure appropriate family and financial planning, to seek early treatment, and to relieve anxiety. In multiple logistic regression analysis, willingness to undergo PGT was negatively associated with having a self-reported family history of dementia (OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.68-0.96) and was positively associated with marital status (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.13-1.70). In conclusion, PGT for AD seems to be well accepted in this large Saudi cohort. The reasons cited are similar to those reported elsewhere in the literature.
