RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: Assess the impact of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) on xerostomia, salivary flow rate (SFR) and composition in patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC). STUDY DESIGN: Thirty patients undergoing RT (65 Gy) for HNC were enrolled. Saliva and xerostomia evaluations collected pre- and post-PBMT-RT. PBMT involved irradiation of extra and intraoral points, 15-20 sessions, 2-3 times/week. SFR, trace elements, total protein, alkaline phosphatase, xerostomia, and pH were analyzed. RESULTS: The average age was 60.7 years. After treatment, there was not a significant reduction in SFR and there was no difference on xerostomia. Significant reductions in Al, Cd, Fe, Ni, P, and Sb concentrations were observed, along with a significant increase in Mg concentration. Sample data were organized into 3 groups based on a self-organizing map. Low concentrations of Al, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, S, Sr, and Zn were the primary discriminatory factors for group A, while group B consisted of post-PBMT-RT samples with high concentrations of Ca, K, Mg, Na, and S. CONCLUSIONS: PBMT prevented a significant reduction in SFR and xerostomia induced by radiation therapy. These findings suggest that PBMT prevents salivary gland damage minimizing the decline in salivary flow.

The behaviors of internal standards, according to different flow rates of the cell collision gas (He), were studied for the determination of Cd, Pb, Pd, Pt, Rh, and Sn in samples of fish and mollusks by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The elements Bi, Ge, In, Sc, and Y were selected as internal standards, considering their masses and first ionization energies. Addition and recovery experiments were carried out at three concentration levels to evaluate the accuracy of the method applied for the analysis of two samples with different matrices. The results were evaluated using a self-organizing map (SOM). The best analyte/IS pairs were as follows: 114Cd+/74Ge+, 195Pt+/74Ge+, and 208Pb+/74Ge+. For 103Rh+, 106Pd+, and 120Sn+, greater accuracy was achieved without use of an internal standard. Helium gas (2.8 mL min-1) was used in the collision cell for the analytes, except for Sn, and recoveries ranged from 98 to 101% under optimal conditions. The use of SOM as an exploratory analysis tool was an effective approach for selection of the most appropriate internal standards.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SCZ) presents complex challenges related to diagnosis and clinical monitoring. The study of conditions associated with SCZ can be facilitated by using potential markers and patterns that provide information to support the diagnosis and oral health. METHODS: The salivary composition of patients diagnosed with SCZ (nâ¯=â¯50) was evaluated and compared to the control (nâ¯=â¯50). Saliva samples from male patients were collected and clinical parameters were evaluated. The concentration of total proteins and amylase were determined and salivary macro- and microelements were quantified by ICP OES and ICP-MS. Exploratory data analysis based on artificial intelligence tools was used in the investigation. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in the salivary concentrations of Al, Fe, Li, Mg, Na, and V, higher prevalence of caries (pâ¯<â¯0.001), periodontal disease (pâ¯<â¯0.001), and reduced salivary flow rate (pâ¯=â¯0.019) in SCZ patients. Also, samples were grouped into six clusters. As, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, and Sr were correlated with each other, while Fe, K, Li, Ti, and V showed the highest concentrations in the samples distributed in the clusters with the highest association between SZC patients and controls. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained indicate changes in salivary flow, organic composition, and levels of macro- and microelements in SCZ patients. Salivary concentrations of Fe, Mg, and Na may be related to oral conditions, higher prevalence of caries, and periodontal disease. The exploratory analysis showed different patterns in the salivary composition of SCZ patients impacted by associations between oral health conditions and the use of medications. Future studies are encouraged to confirm the results investigated in this study.

Solvents with both low density and viscosity have the advantage of higher extraction efficiency due to lower diffusivity and consequently higher mass transfer. In this study, a mixture design was performed for the synthesis of three different natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) using citric acid, malic acid, and xylitol. The optimized proportion for each of the three solvents synthesized was selected based on density and viscosity values. The NADES were characterized by infrared spectroscopy analysis, that showed characteristic bands of the initial reagents and the presence of hydrogen bonds confirming the formation of each deep eutectic solvent. Then, the NADES were used as solvents in ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of biological tissue and plant material samples for the determination of As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Se, and V by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results for the proposed methods were compared to microwave-assisted acid digestion (MW-AD). The extraction recoveries ranged from 80 to 120% for most of the elements determined. The use of NADES as carbon sources improved the sensitivity of the As and Cd analyses, due to charge transfer reactions between the analyte and C+ and/or other carbon species. In addition, the Analytical Eco-Scale was used to assess the greenness of the proposed analytical procedures (UAE and MAE). It showed that the UAE and MAE methods provided excellent green analyses, while the MW-AD method was rated as an acceptable green procedure.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) based on xylitol, citric acid, and malic acid were synthesized and were then characterized using infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), also density and viscosity were measurements. The deep eutectic solvents were used as solvent in ultrasound-assisted extraction (DES-UAE) of plant samples prior to elemental analysis. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) were employed for the determination of As, Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P, and Zn in the extracts. The infrared analyses of the NADES revealed bands characteristic of the initial reagents, with the presence of hydrogen bonds, which confirmed the formation of a NADES. The thermal analyses showed decomposition temperatures of around 170⯰C and endothermic events related to degradation of the NADES. The viscosity and density parameters were found to be related to the presence of hydrogen bonds. The extraction recoveries ranged from 80% to 120%, with some analytes presenting poor recoveries. There were no significant differences between the NADES, in terms of the concentrations of the analytes found in the extracts. However, there were differences between the analyte concentrations obtained using the NADES extraction method and the concentrations obtained using microwave-assisted acid digestion (MW-AD), possibly due to the different types of interactions between the solvents and the analytes. Plant tissues are complex matrices containing substantial amounts of silica, so some elements may be tightly bound and consequently difficult to release. The results indicated that UAE using NADES is a promising technique for the elemental extraction of plant samples.

This study investigated the capability of High Matrix Introduction (HMI) strategy for analysis of dialysis solution and urine samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The use of HMI enables the direct introduction of urine samples and dialysis solutions 2-fold diluted with 0.14molL-1 HNO3. Bismuth, Ge, Ir, Li, Pt, Rh, Sc and Tl were evaluated as internal standards for Al, Ag, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Pb, Sb, Se, Tl, and Hg determination in dialysis solution and As, Cd, Hg and Pb determination in urine samples. Helium collision cell mode (4.5mLmin-1) was efficient to overcome polyatomic interferences in As, Se and Cr determinations. Mercury memory effects were evaluated by washing with 0.12molL-1 HCl or an alkaline diluent solution prepared with n-butanol, NH4OH, EDTA, and Triton X-100. This later solution was efficient for avoiding Hg memory effects in 6h of analysis. Linear calibration curves were obtained for all analytes and detection limits were lower than maximum amounts allowed by Brazilian legislations. Recoveries for all analytes in dialysis solutions and urine samples ranged from 82% to 125% and relative standard deviations for all elements and samples were lower than 7%. Analysis of control internal urine samples was in agreement with certified values at 95% confidence level (t-test; p < 0.05).

A microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometer with N2-based plasma was combined with a multimode sample introduction system (MSIS) for hydride generation (HG) and multielemental determination of As, Bi, Ge, Sb, and Sn in samples of forage, bovine liver, powdered milk, agricultural gypsum, rice, and mineral fertilizer, using a single condition of prereduction and reduction. The accuracy of the developed analytical method was evaluated using certified reference materials of water and mineral fertilizer, and recoveries ranged from 95 to 106%. Addition and recovery experiments were carried out, and the recoveries varied from 85 to 117% for all samples evaluated. The limits of detection for As, Bi, Ge, Sb, and Sn were 0.46, 0.09, 0.19, 0.46, and 5.2 µg/L, respectively, for liquid samples, and 0.18, 0.04, 0.08, 0.19, and 2.1 mg/kg, respectively, for solid samples. The method proposed offers a simple, fast, multielemental, and robust alternative for successful determination of all five analytes in agricultural samples with low operational cost without compromising analytical performance.

Microwave-assisted sample digestion using closed vessels is becoming the standard for trace analysis because contamination and losses can be better controlled. Gases are generated during digestion and there is an increment of the internal vessel pressure. Consequently, vessels venting may occur depending on the design of the vessel and the maximum pressure it can stand for. In the present work it was observed that it is possible to allow venting during the digestion without losing volatile analytes, such as As, when properly controlling heating and chemical conditions. Recoveries for As in certified reference materials of animal tissues ranged from 94 to 112% despite mass losses as high as 62%mm(-1) observed in the digests. However, for Hg(II) in medium containing chlorides recoveries were poor. The efficiency of digestion was measured by determination of organic carbon contents in digests and they ranged from 0.10 to 0.19% for plant and animal tissues. The temperature gradient along the vessel height is important for avoiding losses of volatile elements.
RESUMO
Arsenic is an element widely present in nature. Additionally, it may be found as different species in several matrices and therefore it is one of the target elements in chemical speciation. Although the number of studies in terrestrial plants is low, compared to matrices such as fish or urine, this number is raising due to the fact that this type of matrix are closely related to the human food chain. In speciation analysis, sample preparation is a critical step and several extraction procedures present drawbacks. In this review, papers dealing with extraction procedures, analytical methods, and studies of species conservation in plants cultivated in terrestrial environment are critically discussed. Analytical procedures based on extractions using water or diluted acid solutions associated with HPLC-ICP-MS are good alternatives, owing to their versatility and sensitivity, even though less expensive strategies are shown as feasible choices.
