RESUMO

Primary brain tumors in two dogs were surgically removed followed by postoperative radiation therapy. The two tumors were confirmed histologically to be astrocytoma and meningioma, respectively. After the surgery, the neurological status of each dog improved dramatically and a total dose of 40 Gy was delivered to the surgical site to treat residual tumor tissue. Although the dog with astrocytoma died 6 months after surgery due to unknown causes, the dog with meningioma has lived for over 24 months with a degree of neurological disorder less severe than that before treatment. These results suggested the effectiveness of this type of therapy on brain tumor in dogs and therapeutic modality should be positively planned to treat canine brain tumors.

RESUMO

A total of 113 specimens collected from purulent skin lesions of household cats was examined bacteriologically. Ninety seven isolates obtained from 74 specimens (65.5%). Of these, 11 specimens (9.7%) contained obligate anaerobes only, 18 specimens (15.9%) yielded both obligate and facultative anaerobes. In the obligate anaerobes detected, genus Fusobacterium was the most frequently observed and F. nucleatum was most common species. Pasteurella multocida was the facultative anaerobe which was most frequently detected.

RESUMO

An 8-year-old intact female Maltese was presented with anorexia and weight loss. Severe anemia, leukocytosis, and marked thrombocytosis were noticed. Blast cells resembled to megakaryoblasts were observed in peripheral blood smear. Based on bone marrow biopsy and histopathological examination, it was diagnosed as megakaryoblastic leukemia. Canine megakaryoblastic leukemia is very rare, however this is the first case report in Japan.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to clarify the effects of surgical orthodontic treatment for malalignment caused by the prolonged retention of deciduous canines in young dogs. Fifty-five dogs with malocclusion or pre-malocclusion were divided into two groups. Group 1 received surgical orthodontic treatment (32 dogs) using modification of Ross and Yamane's method of treating for malalignment due to prolonged retention of deciduous canine teeth; Group 2 received no treatment (23 dogs). Occurrence of malocclusion 1-3 weeks after treatment of the group receiving surgery was only 3.8%. However, malocclusion was seen in 73.4% of the non-treatment group approximately 2 years after the first examination. Surgical orthodontic treatment was very useful in treating malalignment due to prolonged retention of deciduous canines in young dogs.
