RESUMO

Background: Decompression for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is the most frequently performed spine surgery in Denmark. According to the Danish spine registry DaneSpine, at 1 year after surgery, about 75% of patients experiences considerable pain relief and around 66% improvement in quality of life. However, 25% do not improve very much. We have developed a predictive decision support tool, PROPOSE. It is intended to be used in the clinical conversation between healthcare providers and LSS patients as a shared decision-making aid presenting pros and cons of surgical intervention. This study presents the development and evaluation of PROPOSE in a clinical setting. Methods: For model development, 6.357 LSS patients enrolled in DaneSpine were identified. For model validation, predictor response and predicted outcome was collected via PROPOSE from 228 patients. Observed outcome at 1 year was retrieved from DaneSpine. All participants were treated at 3 Danish spine centers. The outcome measures presented are improvement in walking distance, the Oswestry Disability Index, EQ-5D-3L and leg/back pain on the Visual Analog Scale. Outcome variables were dichotomized into success (1) and failure (0). With the exception of walking distance, a success was defined as reaching minimal clinically important difference at 1-year follow-up. Models were trained using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines. Performance was assessed by inspecting confusion matrix, ROC curves and comparing GCV (generalized cross-validation) errors. Final performance of the models was evaluated on independent test data. Results: The walking distance model demonstrated excellent performance with an AUC of 0.88 and a Brier score of 0.14. The VAS leg pain model had the lowest discriminatory performance with an AUC of 0.67 and a Brier score of 0.22. Conclusions: PROPOSE works in a real-world clinical setting as a proof of concept and demonstrates acceptable performance. It may have the potential of aiding shared decision making.

Osteolytic bone disease is present in about 80% of patients with multiple myeloma at the time of diagnosis. Managing bone disease in patients with multiple myeloma is a challenge and requires a multi-faceted treatment approach with medication, surgery, and radiation. The established treatments with intravenous or subcutaneous antiresorptives can cause debilitating adverse events for patients, mainly osteonecrosis of the jaw, which, traditionally, has been difficult to manage. Now, oral surgery is recommended and proven successful in 60-85% of patients. Patients with spinal involvement may benefit from surgery in the form of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty for pain relief, improved mobility, and reestablished sagittal balance, as well as the restoration of vertebral height. These procedures are considered safe, but the full therapeutic impact needs to be investigated further. Ixazomib, the first oral proteasome inhibitor, increases osteoblast differentiation, and recently published preliminary results in patients treated with Ixazomib maintenance have promisingly shown increased trabecular volume caused by prolonged bone formation activity. Other novel potential treatment strategies are discussed as well.

Study design: Quantitative survey study is the study design. Objectives: The study aims to develop a model for the factors that drive or impede the use of an artificial intelligence clinical decision support system (CDSS) called PROPOSE, which supports shared decision-making on the choice of treatment of ordinary spinal disorders. Methods: A total of 62 spine surgeons were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their behavioral intention to use the CDSS after being introduced to PROPOSE. The model behind the questionnaire was the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Results: The degree of ease of use associated with the new technology (effort expectancy/usability) and the degree to which an individual believes that using a new technology will help them attain gains in job performance (performance expectancy) were the most important factors. Social influence and trust in the CDSS were other factors in the path model. r2 for the model was 0.63, indicating that almost two-thirds of the variance in the model was explained. The only significant effect in the multigroup analyses of path differences between two subgroups was for PROPOSE use and social influence (p = 0.01). Conclusion: Shared decision-making is essential to meet patient expectations in spine surgery. A trustworthy CDSS with ease of use and satisfactory predictive ability promoted by the leadership will stand the best chance of acceptance and bridging the communication gap between the surgeon and the patient.

INTRODUCTION: Instrumented lumbar fusion has been used as surgical treatment for severe disability with associated low back pain. The overall effect and risks of the most commonly used instrumented lumbar fusion techniques are controversial. The objective of the study was to describe clinical and patient-reported outcomes in patients undergoing single-level instrumented interbody fusion surgery with either posterior or transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. METHODS: This was a registry-based cohort study on patients from the national Danish surgical spine database - DaneSpine. The primary outcome was Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score at two-year follow-up. Secondary outcome measures were the 3-Level European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ5D-3L), a visual analogue scale (VAS) score, patient satisfaction and the rate of intraoperative complications. RESULTS: The cohort included 460 patients. ODI improved from 48 ± 15 preoperatively to 33 ± 20 at the two-year follow-up (p less-than 0.001). The EQ5D-3L score improved from 0.279 ± 0.311 to 0.542 ± 0.340, the VAS score for leg pain from 60 ± 28 to 40 ± 32 and back pain from 70 ± 20 to 47 ± 30. Patient satisfaction was obtained in 58%; 24% were undecided, whereas 18% were not satisfied with the treatment outcome at their two-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Patients suffering from severe back-related disability after failed conservative treatment may expect an improvement in physical function and reduced pain after instrumented lumbar interbody fusion. BACKGROUND: In Scandinavia, spinal fusion is frequently performed without instrumentation, as use of instrumentation in the elderly can be complicated by poor bone quality and the risk of screw pull-out. However, uninstrumented fusion carries the risk of nonunion. We performed a randomized controlled trial in an attempt to determine if use of instrumentation leads to better outcomes and fusion rates when spinal fusion is performed for degenerative spondylolisthesis in the elderly. METHODS: This was a randomized, single-center, open-label trial of patients with symptomatic single-level degenerative spondylolisthesis who were assigned 1:1 to decompression and fusion with or without instrumentation after at least 12 weeks of nonoperative treatment had failed. The primary outcome was the change in the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and secondary outcomes included fusion rates within 1 year, reoperation rates within 2 years, and changes in the EuroQol-5 Dimension-3 Level (EQ-5D) score. RESULTS: Fifty-four subjects were randomized to each of the 2 groups, which had similar preoperative demographic and surgical characteristics. We found similar improvements in the ODI (p = 0.791), back pain, leg pain, and quality of life between groups at 1 and 2 years of follow-up. Solid fusion on computed tomography (CT) scans was noted in 94% of the patients in the instrumented group and 31% in the uninstrumented group (p < 0.001). One patient (2%) in the instrumented group and 7 (13%) in the uninstrumented group (p = 0.031) had a reoperation within 2 years after the index surgery. CONCLUSIONS: We found no difference in patient-reported outcomes when we compared instrumented with uninstrumented fusion in patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis. The uninstrumented group had a significantly higher rate of nonunion and reoperations at 2 years. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic Level I . PURPOSE: We hypothesized that unilateral leg pain following surgical treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is associated with an increase in the glucose metabolism of the contralateral thalamus. METHODS: Patients scheduled for surgery due to LDH underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography less than two weeks prior to surgery. Their thalamic FDG uptake was measured and expressed as the mean and partial volume corrected mean standardized uptake values (SUVmean and cSUVmean). These measures were compared with patient-related outcome measures collected pre- and 1-year post-operatively: back and leg pain on a 0-100 VAS scale and health-related quality of life as measured by the EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D). RESULTS: Twenty-six patients (ten females) aged 49.7 ± 7.4 (mean ± SD) years were included. There was a significant correlation between painful body side and increased contralateral thalamic uptake of FDG, with regard to cSUVmean values. Correlation analyses including clinical parameters and cSUVmean indicated some association with 1-year change in EQ-5D. CONCLUSION: These preliminary data sustain the hypothesis that unilateral pain in patients with LDH is associated with increased glucose metabolism in the contralateral thalamus, suggesting a central role of thalamus in chronic pain perception.

Background: Despite advances in surgical techniques and diagnostics, some patients remain unsatisfied with the result following spine surgery. One way to improve patient satisfaction may be found in better alignment of expectations. Prognostic tools might prove useful in strengthening surgeon-patient communication prior to surgery. The purpose of this study is to assess the predictive capabilities of the Swedish based Dialogue Support (DS) tool for spine surgery on a Danish population. Methods: The study included the diagnoses lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis, and lumbar degenerative disc disease. A total of 5.954 patients were retrieved from the Danish national spine registry (DaneSpine). For each group, 200 random cases with complete preoperative and 1 year follow-up data were selected. Two outcome measures were used: Global assessment of pain (GA pain) and satisfaction with outcome. Predictions were produced by manual entry in the DS application. Goodness of fit tests were used to compare the predicted distribution of proportions with successful outcomes (GA pain) to the actual distribution in the three samples. Binomial tests were performed to evaluate the predicted proportion of satisfied patients. Furthermore, ROC-curves, calibration plots, and metrics were calculated to assess the predictive performance. Results: ROC curves showed comparable AUC values with the values reported by the developing authors of the DS from 0.62 to 0.73 (GA pain) and 0.64 to 0.70 (satisfaction with outcome). The calibration plots, however, revealed a low degree of concordance. For GA pain sensitivity varied from 92.4% to 99.3%, and specificity from 1.5% to 13.4%. For satisfaction, sensitivity varied from 97.1% to 99.2% and specificity from 0.0% to 2.9%. Conclusions: The predictive capabilities of the DS tool could not be generalized to the Danish sample cohorts. Further research on larger samples, provided full access to the underlying algorithms can be obtained, could produce a different result.

OBJECTIVE: The authors' objective was to investigate whether sagittal balance improves in patients with spinal stenosis after decompression alone. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal cohort study compared preoperative and 6-month postoperative 36-inch full-length radiographs in patients aged older than 60 years. Patients underwent decompression alone for central lumbar spinal stenosis with either a minimally invasive bilateral laminotomy for central decompression, unilateral laminectomy as an over-the-top procedure for bilateral decompression, or traditional wide laminectomy with removal of the spinous processes on both sides. The following radiographic parameters were measured: sagittal vertical axis (SVA), lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic tilt (PT), pelvic incidence (PI), PI-LL mismatch, coronal Cobb angle, and sacral slope (SS). Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were collected, including scores on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), visual analog scale (VAS) for leg and back pain, and EQ-5D. RESULTS: Forty-five patients (24 males) with a mean ± SD age of 71.8 ± 5.6 years were included. Sagittal balance showed statistically significant improvement, with the mean SVA decreasing from 52.3 mm preoperatively to 33.9 mm postoperatively (p = 0.0001). The authors found an increase in LL, from mean -41.5° preoperatively to -43.9° postoperatively, but this was not statistically significant (p = 0.055). A statistically significant decrease in PI-LL mismatch from mean 8.4° preoperatively to 5.8° postoperatively was found (p = 0.002). All PROM scores showed significant improvement after spinal decompression surgery. The correlations between SVA and all PROMs were statistically significant at both preoperative and postoperative time points, although most correlations were weak except for those between preoperative SVA and ODI (r = 0.55) and between SVA and VAS for leg pain (r = 0.58). CONCLUSIONS: Sagittal balance and PROMs show improvement at short-term follow-up evaluations in patients who have undergone decompression alone for lumbar spinal stenosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective/prospective study. OBJECTIVE: Models based on preoperative factors can predict patients' outcome at 1-year follow-up. This study measures the performance of several machine learning (ML) models and compares the results with conventional methods. METHODS: Inclusion criteria were patients who had lumbar disc herniation (LDH) surgery, identified in the Danish national registry for spine surgery. Initial training of models included 16 independent variables, including demographics and presurgical patient-reported measures. Patients were grouped by reaching minimal clinically important difference or not for EuroQol, Oswestry Disability Index, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) Leg, and VAS Back and by their ability to return to work at 1 year follow-up. Data were randomly split into training, validation, and test sets by 50%/35%/15%. Deep learning, decision trees, random forest, boosted trees, and support vector machines model were trained, and for comparison, multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) and logistic regression models were used. Model fit was evaluated by inspecting area under the curve curves and performance during validation. RESULTS: Seven models were arrived at. Classification errors were within ±1% to 4% SD across validation folds. ML did not yield superior performance compared with conventional models. MARS and deep learning performed consistently well. Discrepancy was greatest among VAS Leg models. CONCLUSIONS: Five predictive ML and 2 conventional models were developed, predicting improvement for LDH patients at the 1-year follow-up. We demonstrate that it is possible to build an ensemble of models with little effort as a starting point for further model optimization and selection.

STUDY DESIGN: Validation study. OBJECTIVES: To translate and validate the Zurich Claudication Questionnaire (ZCQ) into a Danish version of the disease-specific patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), which assesses symptom severity, physical function, and satisfaction after surgery. METHOD: Translation into a Danish version of the original questionnaire by back- and forward-translating the questionnaire and finally transforming a prefinal test version into a final and cross-cultural adapted version. Validation was performed as a cohort study assessing floor-ceiling effects, internal consistency, test-retest reproducibility, criterion validity, discriminant validity, and responsiveness to change. RESULTS: Fifty-three patients were consecutively included in the study, 53 healthy controls were matched. Floor effect was seen in the postoperative data. Internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha was good to excellent. Substantial test-retest reproducibility was found using Cohen's weighted kappa. The Danish ZCQ showed moderate to strong association with similar domains of Oswestry Disability Index, Short Form 36, Euro QoL 5D, visual analogue scale-leg and back. The questionnaire showed significant responsiveness to change and a significant discriminant validity between LSS patients and healthy controls. CONCLUSION: This study shows the Danish translation of the original ZCQ to be well understood by Danish patients. The Danish version is furthermore a reliable and valid questionnaire, which is responsive to change.

To provide an up-to-date description of knowledge and pitfalls related to the classification, definition and grading of Modic changes (MC) visualized on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). State-of-the-art review of current knowledge regarding the definition and grading of MC on MRI. MC on MRI have been reported to be associated with low back pain and disability. However, previous studies have shown heterogeneous results in regards to the impact of MC and its clinical relevance in patients with back pain. MC is a term used with considerable variation in the literature. No strict definition has been provided previously, this has contributed to varying diagnostic inclusion criteria, heterogeneous study populations, and discrepancy in results. A definition of MC and a proposal for grading is provided in this state-of-the-art review. MC are important, clinically relevant findings. However, issues with the nomenclature, definition and grading of these changes need to be addressed. Our current review highlights relevant issues related to MC, and provides a definition and grading score for the term MC that includes the Modic type and the extent of vertebral body involvement. Future studies should seek to validate the MC grading score in clinically relevant populations.

STUDY DESIGN: Propensity-matched retrospective study of patients prospectively enrolled in Danespine. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report 5-year patient reported outcome in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) patients who underwent wide laminectomy (WL), segmental bilateral laminotomies (SBL), or unilateral hemilaminectomy (UHL) with bilateral decompression. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The optimal procedure for LSS remains controversial. Studies have shown no difference in short term outcomes among micro-laminectomy, hemi-laminotomies, broad laminectomy, and laminectomy with instrumented fusion. METHODS: Patients with spinal stenosis who were enrolled in DaneSpine at two spine centers from January 2010 until May 2014 and underwent WL0, SBL, or UHL with bilateral decompression were identified. Patients completed standard questionnaires preoperatively and 1, 2, and 5 years after surgery. Patients in the three cohorts were propensity-matched using age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, number of surgical levels, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). RESULTS: Propensity matching produced 62 cases in each group. There were no differences in PROM among the three cohorts at five years follow up. Twelve patients were re-operated at the index level. The most frequent indication of reoperation was repeat decompression after SBL. Regression analysis revealed no statistical significant associations between the incidence of reoperation and age, sex, number of operated levels, ASA score, BMI, center, smoking status, or having a dural tear at index operation. CONCLUSION: This study revealed no significant difference PROMs, reoperation rates or time to reoperation at five years follow up between SBLs, UHL, or WL in patients operated for central LSS.Level of Evidence: 4.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell cancer where about 1/3 of the patients present with pathological fractures at the time of diagnosis. Despite treatment, the majority of the patients will develop additional fractures. Because survival and prognosis has improved significantly over the last two decades for patients with MM, there is an increased need to focus on optimal fracture treatment. Traditionally, fracture pain is treated conservatively with opioids, bisphosphonates, bracing and radiation therapy. Vertebral augmentation has been used for the last three decades as a minimally invasive treatment option for vertebral compression fractures, but the evidence base for the efficacy is weak. We describe a trial assessing the impact of vertebroplasty on clinical outcome in the treatment of patients with MM with painful vertebral fractures. METHODS: 100 patients with MM with painful vertebral fractures will be randomised in a prospective, single-blinded, multicentre, clinical trial where patients are randomised to either usual care or usual care supplemented with vertebroplasty with a possibility of crossover 4 weeks after randomisation. The primary outcome will be change in Oswestry Disability Index at 4 weeks. ANALYSIS: Primary and secondary outcomes are assessed at baseline and at 4, 8, 26 and 52 weeks. Categorical data will be presented by means of frequencies and related percentages; continuous data will be displayed by means of descriptive statistics. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study has been evaluated by the Regional Committees on Health Research for Southern Denmark (S-20200075) and notified and approved by the Region of Southern Denmark and listed in the internal record, journal no. 20/22355. All participants provide consent. The protocol will follow the SPIRIT (Standard Protocol Items for Randomized Trials) statement. The Danish Myeloma Patient Organization supports the study. Findings will be disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and presented at national and international conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04533217.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with poor outcome following coccygectomy on patients with chronic coccydynia and instability of the coccyx. METHODS: From the Danish National Spine Registry, DaneSpine, 134 consecutive patients were identified from a single centre who had coccygectomy from 2011 to 2019. Patient demographic data and patient-reported outcomes, including pain measured on a visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), EuroQol five-dimension five-level questionnaire, and 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey questionnaire (SF-36) were obtained at baseline and at one-year follow-up. Patient satisfaction was obtained at follow-up. Regression analysis, including age, sex, smoking status, BMI, duration of symptoms, work status, welfare payment, preoperative VAS, ODI, and SF-36 was performed to identify factors associated with dissatisfaction with results at one-year follow-up. RESULTS: A minimum of one year follow-up was available in 112 patients (84%). Mean age was 41.9 years (15 to 78) and 97 of the patients were female (87%). Regression showed no statistically significant association between the investigated prognostic factors and a poor outcome following coccygectomy. The satisfied group showed a statistically significant improvement in patient-reported outcomes at one-year follow-up from baseline, whereas the dissatisfied group did not show a significant improvement. CONCLUSION: We did not identify factors associated with poor outcome following coccygectomy. This suggests that neither of the included parameters should be considered contraindications for coccygectomy in patients with chronic coccydynia and instability of the coccyx. Concern has been raised regarding persistent elevated levels of serum metal ions, but only a few studies on the topic have been published. The aim of this study was to compare the levels of serum metal ions in patients with AIS treated with either Harrington rod instrumentation or bracing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: AIS patients treated with Boston brace (BB) or posterior spinal fusion with Harrington rod instrumentation (HR) from 1983 to 1990 were requested to return to clinic. One hundred fifty-nine (73%) of 219 patients were available for follow-up of whom 115 agreed to have a blood draw. RESULTS: The proportion of patients who agreed to have a blood draw were similar in the BB (48 of 100, 48%) and HR (67 of 115, 60%, p = 0.085) groups. None of the surgical patients had their implants removed; mean age at follow-up (BB: 43.2 years vs HR: 43.5 years, p = 0.566) and mean length of follow-up (BB: 26.5 years vs HR: 24.5 years). Mean chromium serum levels were similar between the BB (2.7 nmol/L) and the HR (2.9 nmol/L, p = 0.827). Mean Cobalt serum levels were also similar between the BB (2.6 nmol/L) and the HR (2.8 nmol/L, p = 0.200). CONCLUSION: Serum metal ions were similar in AIS patients treated with bracing or Harrington rod instrumentation 25 years after initiation of treatment.

STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study with 13-year follow-up. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether long-term disability is associated with baseline degenerative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with low back pain (LBP). METHODS: In 2004-2005, patients aged 18 to 60 years with chronic LBP were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial and lumbar MRI was performed. Patients completed the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) and the LBP Rating Scale, at baseline and 13 years after the MRI. Multivariate regression analysis was performed with 13-year RMDQ as the dependent variable and baseline disc degeneration (DD, Pfirrmann grade), Modic changes (MC), facet joint degeneration (FJD, Fujiwara grade) smoking status, body mass index, and self-reported weekly physical activity at leisure as independent variables. RESULTS: Of 204 patients with baseline MRI, 170 (83%) were available for follow-up. Of these, 88 had Pfirrmann grade >III (52%), 67 had MC (39%) and 139 had Fujiwara grade >2 (82%) on at least 1 lumbar level. Only MC (ß = -0.15, P = .031) and weekly physical activity at leisure (ß = -0.51, P < .001) were significantly, negatively, associated with 13-year RMDQ-score (R2 = 0.31). CONCLUSION: DD and FJD were not associated with long-term disability. Baseline MC and weekly physical activity at leisure were statistically significantly associated with less long-term disability.

This review gives a summary of osteoarthritis (OA) of the spine involving the facet and the sacroiliac joints. Facet joint OA is widely prevalent in adults, and is thought to be a common cause of back and neck pain. The prevalence of facet and SI-joint mediated pain increases with age, suggesting that OA might have a particularly important role in older adults with spinal pain. Treatment options of symptomatic facet- and SI-joint degeneration consist of non-opioid analgesics, physiotherapy or in patients with persistent back or leg pain of either spinal decompression or fusion.

Infection has been proposed as a cause of back pain in individuals with Modic changes. This review summarises the knowledge on this topic in Scandinavia. A Norwegian randomized controlled trial could not replicate results in favor of antibiotic treatment for such patients. A Danish study demonstrated that patients with low back pain and Modic changes had similar physical disability-scores and less sick leave due to back pain than individuals without Modic changes at long-term follow-up (>10 years). A Swedish study displayed equal bacterial presence in discs of patients operated for lumbar disc herniation and in control patients, indicating that the presence of bacteria is caused by contamination during the surgical procedure and is not related to back pain.

STUDY DESIGN: A registry-based comparative cohort study with 2-year follow-up. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether Modic changes (MCs) are associated with health-related quality of life, long-term physical disability, back- or leg pain after discectomy. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Previous studies have failed to show a clinically significant association between MCs and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) after discectomy. METHODS: Data from the Danish National Spine Registry on patients undergoing first-time lumbar discectomy at a single institution from 2014 to 2017 with an accessible preoperative lumbar magnetic resonance imaging, complete preoperative, and 2-year follow-up questionnaires were obtained. PROs including Oswestry disability index (ODI), European Quality of Life-Five Dimensions (EQ-5D), visual analogue scale (VAS) back and leg pain, and patient satisfaction were collected. Patients were stratified based on the presence (+MC) or absence (-MC) of MCs on the preoperative MRI. RESULTS: Of 620 patients included, MCs were present in 290 patients (47%). Of these, MC type 1 (MC-1) was present in 73 (25%) and MC type 2 (MC-2) in 217 (75%) patients. Preoperative data for ODI, EQ-5D, VAS-BP, and VAS-LP were comparable for the +MC and -MC groups. Both groups had a statistically significant improvement in PROs from baseline compared with 2-year follow-up (P < 0.001). At 2-year follow-up, both groups had improved with no significant difference between them in regards to ODI (15.5 vs. 17.2, P = 0.208); EQ-5D (0.75 vs. 0.72, P = 0.167); VAS-BP (27.1 vs. 28.3, P = 0.617); VAS-LP (26.8 vs. 25.0, P = 0.446); and patient satisfaction (74% vs. 76%, P = 0.878). CONCLUSION: MCs were not found to be associated with health-related quality of life, disability, back- or leg pain, or patient satisfaction 2 years after discectomy. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 2.
