RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced lifestyle changes that appeared to impact adults' engagement in health-promoting activities. Researchers observed increased stress, sleep problems, and sedentary activity, and decreased physical activity during the pandemic. This secondary analysis examined the frequency that adults engaged in different daily activities and links between activity types, stress, and sleep during the pandemic. Fifty-three adults completed a single online survey in January 2021 where they reported demographics, COVID-19 pandemic experiences, daily activities, stress, and sleep. Sum scores were calculated to indicate total frequency of different activity types. Regressions were used to examine whether the frequency of different activity types predicted sleep duration and stress. There was a trend-level relationship between the frequency of activities done outdoors and stress scores, such that doing outdoor activities more often was linked with less stress (P = .098). Higher income also tended to be linked with more stress (P = .053), as did younger age (P = .028). When restricting the outdoor activity variable to physical outdoor activities only, the relationship with stress became significant (P = .013). These results suggest that engaging in physical activity outdoors may reduce stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Feeding style refers to the approach that parents use to feed their child and the emotional climate during eating. Indulgent styles, characterized by low structure and high responsiveness, have been linked to childhood weight gain. Few studies have examined feeding styles within out-of-home contexts (e.g., restaurants), which are common eating environments for many families. This study sought to examine feeding styles at-home and in restaurants among African American parents. 52 African American parents with a 3-to-8-year-old child (M = 35.6 years, 86% mothers, 57% annual household income <$50,000, 57% Associate's degree or higher) who regularly dined at restaurants completed an online survey in winter 2022-2023. Parents reported on demographics, anthropometrics, and their feeding styles at home and in restaurants via The Caregiver's Feeding Style Questionnaire. Findings indicated that the indulgent style was the most common overall. Indulgent styles were more prevalent in restaurants (χ2 = 7.4, p = 0.007) than home, and authoritarian styles more prevalent at home (χ2 = 4.5, p = 0.03). Child weight status differed by feeding style in both contexts (p ≤ 0.04); indulgent styles in restaurants were linked to higher BMI z-scores, while authoritarian styles at home were linked to lower BMI z-scores. Higher parent BMI was linked to increased likelihood of having an indulgent style at home (OR = 1.13, p = 0.03), while lower parent BMI was linked to increased likelihood of the uninvolved style at home (OR = 0.76, p = 0.049). Overall, indulgent styles were common and more prevalent in restaurants, where they were linked to higher child weight status. Findings may inform future health promotion efforts in out-of-home eating contexts.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether household type (eg, families with children) moderated the effects of an optimal defaults grocery intervention and examine intervention effects on grocery purchases to be consumed by the participant vs others in the household. METHODS: Participants (n = 65) diagnosed with or at risk for type 2 diabetes were recruited and randomized into an optimal default online grocery intervention or an online or in-person control group. Grocery receipt data were coded into Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension nutritional quality scores, and energy, carbohydrate, and sugar content were calculated. Repeated measures analysis of variance examined household types (eg, single vs multi-resident) as moderators of intervention effects. Parallel models explored foods purchased for the participant and foods purchased for other household members separately. RESULTS: Household type was not a significant moderator of intervention effects on nutritional quality or other nutrients of interest (P > 0.10). The default intervention significantly increased the nutritional quality of groceries purchased across household types and for other household members besides the participant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Optimal defaults may improve grocery purchases across different household types and extend to others in the household, supporting use across household types.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a responsive parenting (RP) intervention on toddler diet and explore associations with mothers' infant feeding practices and child weight status. METHODS: INSIGHT tested an RP intervention designed for the prevention of obesity against a safety control among primiparous mothers and their infants. Mothers reported on feeding practices, as well as toddler diet with a Food Frequency Questionnaire (n = 229). Trained research staff obtained child anthropometrics at age 2 years. RESULTS: Latent class analysis identified three dietary patterns: high fruits and vegetables (HFV, 31%); meat, potatoes, and added sugars (MPAS, 24%); and high juice, low fruits and vegetables (JLFV, 45%). Toddler dietary pattern was not related to study group (RP, control) or child weight status at age 2 years. Mothers who reported more structure-based feeding had toddlers that were more likely to have the healthier, HFV dietary pattern than MPAS and JLFV. Findings for control-based feeding practices were mixed; maternal restriction was associated with the HFV dietary pattern, whereas the use of food as a reward was associated with MPAS and JLFV. CONCLUSIONS: Mothers' structure-based feeding practices in infancy, as well as some control-based feeding practices, were associated with later healthier toddler dietary patterns.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the feasibility and implementation of an optimal defaults intervention designed to align grocery purchases with a diet recommended for people with or at-risk for type 2 diabetes. DESIGN: This was a 5-week pilot randomised trial with three groups: in-person grocery shopping, shopping online and shopping online with 'default' carts. Participants were asked to shop normally in Week One, according to group assignment in Weeks Two-Four (intervention period), and as preferred in Week Five. All groups received diabetes-friendly recipes via email each intervention week. SETTING: Participants grocery shopped in person or online. Grocery receipt forms, enrolment information and exit surveys were collected remotely and used to assess feasibility and implementation. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-five adults with or at-risk for type 2 diabetes. RESULTS: Sixty-two participants completed the exit survey and fifty-five submitted receipts all 5 weeks. Forty utilised recipes, 95 % of whom indicated recipes were somewhat or very useful. Orange chicken, quesadillas and pork with potato and apples were the most liked recipes. Most Defaults group participants accepted at least some default cart items. Recipes with the highest default acceptance were whole grain pasta and chicken, quesadillas with black beans and chicken with olives. Participants' primary concerns about the intervention were costs associated with online shopping, inability to select preferred foods and some recipes including ingredients household members would not eat. CONCLUSIONS: The study had high retention, data were successfully collected remotely and the intervention was acceptable to most participants. Tailoring recipes to household preferences may be beneficial in future studies.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity promotes health, and physical activity done outdoors in nature may be particularly beneficial. We conducted two randomized studies to examine the implementation of a winter hiking intervention and whether this intervention affected activity choices and aspects of well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Convenience samples of adults (n = 53; n = 51) were recruited into two different randomized studies in 2021 and 2022 respectively. Participants completed online surveys at baseline and 6 and 11-12 weeks later. Participants were randomized to a study group (intervention or control) shortly after the baseline assessments. In both studies, the intervention group received free access to a regional winter hiking challenge. In the second study, we also provided winter traction cleats to this group to facilitate engagement in the hiking challenge. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize intervention implementation, including participants' engagement in challenge hikes. Repeated measures ANOVA models were used to test intervention effects on key outcome variables, including hiking frequency via the Pleasant Activities List, stress via the Perceived Stress Scale, and sleep duration via the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. RESULTS: In the first study, the intervention group's engagement in challenge hikes was low (38.5%); reported barriers included access to winter hiking equipment. In the second study, when winter traction cleats were provided, engagement in the intervention was higher, and the intervention increased hiking frequency and improved sleep. There were no significant intervention effects on stress, but the direction of effects was in the expected direction. CONCLUSIONS: Results highlight some potential positive impacts of this intervention designed to facilitate access to winter hiking. Future research could examine whether effects are stronger in a larger sample, in which additional barriers to engagement are addressed. BACKGROUND: Weight outcomes have been associated with child temperament, defined as individual differences in reactivity and self-regulation. The current systematic review aims to provide an updated summary of the evidence linking temperamental negative reactivity, surgency, and regulation superfactors to early childhood feeding, eating, and weight outcomes. METHODS: PubMed, PsycINFO and Embase databases, as well as scientific meeting programs, were searched using keywords and subject headings. Publication dates were limited to 2012-2019 as prior reviews were published in 2012 and 2014. Identified studies were eligible if they included children ages 0-5 years, a measure of child temperament, and a measure of parent/caregiver feeding, child eating, or child weight. 7113 studies were identified and 121 met inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Feeding, eating, and weight outcomes were largely unrelated to overarching negative reactivity, surgency, and effortful control superfactors. Examination of individual temperament dimensions suggested difficult temperament was frequently linked to non-responsive feeding practices, whereas elevated emotionality and decreased self-regulation were linked to maladaptive eating behaviors, and lower inhibitory control to adiposity. Analyses with infants reported greater percentages of significant associations compared to children, and cross-sectional studies generally reported fewer significant associations than other study designs. CONCLUSIONS: Difficult temperament, greater emotionality and lower self-regulation and inhibitory control were the aspects of temperament most consistently related to poorer early childhood feeding, eating, and weight outcomes. Associations tended to be stronger in infancy, and when examined within a non-cross-sectional study design. Findings can inform the development of tailored efforts to promote healthy eating and growth throughout childhood.

OBJECTIVES: To examine effects of the INSIGHT study responsive parenting (RP) intervention on reported and observed general parenting and child behavior during early and middle childhood. STUDY DESIGN: Primiparous mother-newborn dyads (n = 279) were randomized to RP intervention or a safety control, with intervention content delivered at research nurse home visits at infant ages 3-4, 16, 28, and 40 weeks and research center visits at 1 and 2 years. At age 3 (n = 220) and 6 years (n = 171) parenting and child behavior were observed during dyadic interactions and coded using the Iowa Family Interaction Rating Scales. Mothers also reported on child behavior (age 3) and aspects of general parenting (age 6) via the Child Behavior Checklist and The Comprehensive General Parenting Questionnaire, respectively. RESULTS: RP group children had fewer mother-reported externalizing (F = 8.69, P = .004) and problem behaviors at age 3 (F = 4.53, P = .03), and higher observed prosocial (F = 4.73, P = .03) and lower antisocial (ie, externalizing; F = 4.79, P = .03) behavior at age 6 vs controls. There were no study group differences in observed maternal sensitivity at age 3 or 6 years. At age 6, RP group mothers reported higher use of structure defined by establishing consistent rules and routines (F = 5.45, P = .02) and organization of their child's environment (F = 7.12, P = .008) compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: The INSIGHT RP intervention increased parental organization of the child's environment to facilitate competence, and had beneficial impacts on child behavior at 3 and 6 years. No impacts were found on maternal sensitivity in childhood. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01167270.

Indulgent parent feeding styles have been linked to less healthful eating behaviors and higher BMI among children. Restaurants are becoming a frequent eating environment for children. Frequent intake of food from restaurants has been associated with increased weight status, making restaurants a target for childhood obesity prevention efforts. Currently, little research has considered parent feeding styles in restaurants and how they might differ from the home setting. Given the increased frequency of children's restaurant consumption, examining parent feeding styles in restaurants may contribute to future research in this area. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine parent feeding styles at home and in restaurants. Parents whose 3-to-8-year-old children dined out regularly completed a one-time, online survey in February/March 2022. The Caregiver's Feeding Style Questionnaire assessed parent feeding styles at home and in restaurants. Differences in feeding styles were examined across settings. Indulgent feeding styles were most common overall. Parents (n = 117; 92% mothers; 85% white; 61% reported household income > $75,000/year) reported higher demandingness at home (M = 2.6 ± 0.5) compared to restaurants (M = 2.4 ± 0.5; t(116) = 6.7, P < 0.001). Parents were more likely to use indulgent feeding styles (X2 = 11.6, P < 0.001) and less likely to use authoritarian feeding styles (X2 = 4.6, P < 0.05) in restaurants compared to the home, suggesting parent feeding styles are less structured in restaurants. Results may have implications for future healthy eating interventions in away-from-home contexts.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to examine the potential of an optimal-defaults intervention to promote grocery purchases corresponding to a diet for diabetes. METHODS: In total, 65 adults diagnosed with or at increased risk for type 2 diabetes who grocery shopped at one of two study stores were randomized to one of three groups: Defaults, Online, or Control. All groups received diabetes-friendly recipes. In addition, the Online group was asked to grocery shop online during a 3-week intervention, and the Defaults group was asked to shop online, with their online grocery carts prefilled with food items needed to prepare provided recipes. Participants provided weekly grocery receipt data at baseline, at each week of the 3-week intervention, and at post-intervention. RESULTS: Overall, the Defaults group had grocery purchases of a significantly greater nutritional quality versus other groups (F = 16.3, p < 0.001). Between-group comparisons of least-squares means showed consistent effects of the Defaults intervention while intervention components were in place, with a similar pattern for energy and carbohydrate content of grocery purchases. CONCLUSIONS: These results build upon emerging evidence that optimal defaults can promote healthier grocery purchases. Continued examination of this approach could promote healthy food acquisition in accordance with individual dietary preferences and needs.

General parenting interventions have improved parent-child relationships and child behavior, with emerging evidence that they may also reduce prevalence of pediatric overweight/obesity. We conducted a systematic review on interventions that were designed to promote positive parenting and examined child weight post-hoc. We searched for studies published through January 2022 that promoted positive parenting among parents of children ages 0-18 years and reported effects on body weight as an ancillary outcome, with no intervention content focused on energy balance (e.g., feeding, physical activity). This search was carried out within ClinicalTrials.gov, ISRCTN Registry, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Connected Papers. Studies were imported into EndNote X9 and assessed independently by two investigators. In total, 753 clinical trials and 723 publications were assessed, and six publications met inclusion criteria. All cohorts were low-income and interventions targeted expectant mothers up through parents of adolescents. Follow-ups occurred when participants were between 2 and 25 years. Significant improvements in weight-related outcomes were observed across all studies for the intervention arm as a whole or for certain subgroups, and reasons underlying these gains tended to differ by participants' age. The magnitude of effect sizes ranged from medium to large. Interventions focused on general positive parenting are efficacious at lowering risk of overweight/obesity without focusing on physical health. Promoting attachments among infants, restructuring a toddler's home environment, praising preschoolers, and communicating with adolescents may optimize weight outcomes in parenting interventions adapted for obesity prevention.

Australian families increasingly rely on eating foods from outside the home, which increases intake of energy-dense nutrient-poor foods. 'Kids' Menus' are designed to appeal to families and typically lack healthy options. However, the nutritional quality of Kids' Menus from cafes and full-service restaurants (as opposed to fast-food outlets) has not been investigated in Australia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional quality of Kids' Menus in restaurants and cafés in metropolitan Perth, Western Australia. All 787 cafes and restaurants located within the East Metropolitan Health Service area were contacted and 33% had a separate Kids' Menu. The validated Kids' Menu Healthy Score (KIMEHS) was used to assess the nutritional quality of the Kids' Menus. Almost all Kids' Menus (99%) were rated 'unhealthy' using KIMEHS. The mean KIMEHS score for all restaurants and cafés was -8.5 (range -14.5 to +3.5) which was lower (i.e., more unhealthy) than the mean KIMEHS score for the top 10 most frequented chain fast-food outlets (mean -3.5, range -6.5 to +3). The findings highlight the need for additional supports to make improvements in the nutritional quality of Kids' Menus. Local Government Public Health Plans provide an opportunity for policy interventions, using locally relevant tools to guide decision making.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Intervention Nurses Start Infants Growing on Healthy Trajectories (INSIGHT) responsive parenting (RP) intervention for first-time mothers improved firstborn infant sleep compared with controls. The goals of this analysis were to test intervention spillover effects on secondborn siblings and examine birth order differences in infant sleep. METHODS: Secondborns (n = 117) of INSIGHT mothers were enrolled in an observational cohort, SIBSIGHT. The Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire was collected at 3, 16, and 52 weeks. Generalized linear mixed models assessed differences among secondborns by firstborn randomization, as well as birth order differences at 16 and 52 weeks. RESULTS: The RP group secondborns slept 42 minutes longer at night (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 19-64) and 53 minutes longer total (95% CI: 17-90) than control secondborns. RP secondborns were more likely to self-soothe to sleep (odds ratio [OR] = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.1-3.7) and less likely to be fed back to sleep after waking (OR = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3-0.9) than secondborns of control mothers. RP secondborns were more likely to have a bedtime ≤8 pm at 3 (OR = 2.9, 95% CI: 1.1-7.7) and 16 weeks (OR = 4.7, 95% CI: 2.0-11.0). Few differences in sleep parenting practices were observed when comparing siblings within families. Secondborns slept 37 minutes longer than firstborns at 16 weeks (CI: 7-67, P = .03). CONCLUSIONS: The INSIGHT RP intervention for first-time mothers had a spillover effect to secondborns, positively impacting sleep duration and behaviors. Intervening with first-time mothers benefits both firstborns and subsequent children.

OBJECTIVES: Describe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related employment and food acquisition changes for food-secure and food-insecure households. Examine associations between food insecurity, parent food acquisition, and child eating. METHODS: A nationally representative cross-sectional survey with parents (N = 1,000) in Fall 2020. Measures included sociodemographics, food retail regulations, food insecurity, frequency of meals, changes in parent employment, food preparation, and food acquisition because of COVID-19. RESULTS: Parents that reported recent food insecurity were more likely to report COVID-19-related employment changes (eg, job loss, reduced hours) and food acquisition changes. Food insecurity was modestly associated with more frequent in-person restaurant dining (B = 0.12, t(999) = 4.02, P < 0.001), more frequent restaurant delivery (B = 0.13, t(999) = 4.30, P < 0.001), less frequent homecooked meals (B = -0.14, t(999) = 4.56, P < 0.001) but was not associated with take-out (B = 0.02, t(999) = 0.62, P = 0.54). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Food insecurity was associated with employment changes, parent food acquisition, and children's consumption of homecooked and restaurant meals during COVID-19. Future work could explore resources that help parents acquire affordable, nutritious food.

Age and gender differences are prominent in the temperament literature, with the former particularly salient in infancy and the latter noted as early as the first year of life. This study represents a meta-analysis utilizing Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (IBQ-R) data collected across multiple laboratories (N = 4438) to overcome limitations of smaller samples in elucidating links among temperament, age, and gender in early childhood. Algorithmic modeling techniques were leveraged to discern the extent to which the 14 IBQ-R subscale scores accurately classified participating children as boys (n = 2,298) and girls (n = 2,093), and into three age groups: youngest (< 24 weeks; n = 1,102), mid-range (24 to 48 weeks; n = 2,557), and oldest (> 48 weeks; n = 779). Additionally, simultaneous classification into age and gender categories was performed, providing an opportunity to consider the extent to which gender differences in temperament are informed by infant age. Results indicated that overall age group classification was more accurate than child gender models, suggesting that age-related changes are more salient than gender differences in early childhood with respect to temperament attributes. However, gender-based classification was superior in the oldest age group, suggesting temperament differences between boys and girls are accentuated with development. Fear emerged as the subscale contributing to accurate classifications most notably overall. This study leads infancy research and meta-analytic investigations more broadly in a new direction as a methodological demonstration, and also provides most optimal comparative data for the IBQ-R based on the largest and most representative dataset to date.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in severe, unprecedented changes affecting the world population. Restrictions in mobility, social distancing measures, and the persistent social alarm, during the first period of pandemic, resulted in dramatic lifestyle changes and affected physical and psychological wellbeing on a global scale. An international research team was constituted to develop a study involving different countries about eating motivations, dietary habits and behaviors related with food intake, acquisition, and preparation. This study presents results of an online survey, carried out during the first lockdown, in 2020, assessing food-related behavior and how people perceived them to change, comparatively to the period preceding the COVID-19 outbreak. A total of 3332 responses, collected from 16 countries, were considered for analysis [72.8% in Europe, 12.8% in Africa, 2.2% in North America (USA) and 12.2% in South America]. Results suggest that the main motivations perceived to drive food intake were familiarity and liking. Two clusters were identified, based on food intake frequency, which were classified as "healthier" and "unhealthier". The former was constituted by individuals with higher scholarity level, to whom intake was more motivated by health, natural concerns, and weight control, and less by liking, pleasure or affect regulation. The second cluster was constituted by individuals with a higher proportion of male and intake more influenced by affect-related motivations. During this period, a generalized lower concern with the convenience attributes of foods was noted (namely, choice of processed products and fast-food meals), alongside an increase in time and efforts dedicated to home cooking. Understanding the main changes and their underlying motivations in a time of unprecedented crisis is of major importance, as it provides the scientific support that allows one to anticipate the implications for the future of the global food and nutrition system and, consequently, to take the appropriate action.

Background: Most observational research examining factors in the home environment that contribute to child adiposity has focused on feeding and physical activity, although aspects of one's nonfood home environment such as parent-child interactions can also impact body weight. The main objectives of this study were to determine if parent-infant interactions under different contexts provide a unique contribution to infants' concurrent adiposity after accounting for known obesity-related covariates. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analysis of 121 9- to 15-month-old infants using data collected at the baseline visit of an ongoing intervention study. Mother-infant interactions during a feeding episode and a free-play task were recorded and coded. Anthropometrics of infants were measured by trained research staff. We used two-step hierarchical multivariable regression models to examine the unique contribution of mother-infant interactions to weight status after accounting for known obesity-related covariates (i.e., maternal age, BMI, education, parity, and gestational age, child sex, breastfeeding duration, age of solid food introduction, and birthweight). Results: Maternal intrusiveness, child negative affect, and child responsiveness during free-play, but not feeding were significantly associated with z-weight-for-length. For every 1-U increase in maternal intrusiveness and child negative affect there was a 0.321 (p = 0.011) and 0.415 (p = 0.028) unit increase in z-weight-for-length, respectively, whereas for every 1-U increase in child responsiveness there was a decrease of 0.386 U in z-weight-for-length (p = 0.025). Conclusion: This research contributes new findings support the idea that parent-child interactions outside of the feeding context may relate to obesity. Snacks contribute nearly one-quarter of children's daily energy intake in the USA. Snack time therefore represents an opportunity for parents to provide foods with key nutrients. Instead, the most common snack foods are major contributors to children's consumption of added sugars and sodium. Parents face major barriers to providing healthier snacks, including perceptions of high cost and lack of child acceptance. We obtained both economic and qualitative data to inform and optimize interventions for parents to promote vegetable snacks for children. We conducted a survey with parents (n = 368) to estimate how much of a discount would influence vegetable snack purchases by estimating willingness-to-pay using the contingent valuation method, using baby-cut carrots as a sample product. We conducted three focus groups (n = 19) and 1 group interview (n = 2) with children to help understand how to increase the appeal of vegetable snacks. Most (70%) parents accepted the reference price for the vegetable snack. Among those who did not, contingent valuation analysis revealed that a mean discount of approximately 30% would shift consumers to purchasing the snack. Focus group results revealed that the appeal of vegetable snacks to children was influenced by how they were prepared and presented, and the child's familiarity with the vegetables and ability to choose among them. This study lays the groundwork for effective interventions to promote the provision of vegetable snacks by parents.

BACKGROUND: Intervention Nurses Start Infants Growing on Healthy Trajectories tested an early life responsive parenting (RP) intervention designed for obesity prevention. Body mass index z-score at age 3 years was lower for the RP group versus controls with a larger effect for girls than boys. We sought to determine if child sex was associated with differing maternal feeding practices and whether sex moderated intervention effects on feeding. DESIGN/METHODS: Mothers (N = 279) completed the Infant Feeding Styles Questionnaire (IFSQ) at 28 weeks, the Structure and Control in Parent Feeding (SCPF) at 1, 2, and 3 years, and the Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ) at 3 years. Study aims were tested using 2-way analysis of variance and repeated measures. RESULTS: Mothers reported greater restriction (limiting food quantity) for boys at 28 weeks (IFSQ: 3.0 ± 1.1 vs 2.8 ± 1.0, P = .07) and across annual measurements from age 1 to 3 years (SCPF: P = .04). At age 3, the intervention group effect on restriction differed by sex (CFQ: P = .047) such that higher restriction was reported by RP group mothers of boys versus girls (3.4 ± 0.7 vs 3.0 ± 0.9, P = .002) with no control group sex difference (3.4 ± 0.8 vs 3.3 ± 0.9, P = .79). There were no sex differences or sex by intervention group interactions in other reported feeding practices at any assessment (ie, structure-based feeding, pressure). CONCLUSIONS: Mothers of boys used more restrictive feeding through age 3. These findings may be partially explained by previously reported better self-soothing and self-regulation abilities of participating girls.

Restaurants are regular eating environments for many families. Children's consumption of restaurant foods has been linked with poorer diet quality, prompting emerging research examining strategies to encourage healthier eating among children in restaurants. Although taste is a primary determinant of restaurant meal choices, there is a lack of research considering children's perspectives on the taste of different healthier kids' meal options. The current study sought to examine, via objective taste testing, children's liking of and preference for healthier kids' meal options at a quick-service restaurant (QSR) and to describe bundled kids' meals with evidence of both taste acceptability and consistency with nutrition guidelines. Thirty-seven 4-to-8-year-old children completed taste tests of ten healthier main and side dish options. Liking and preference were assessed using standard methods after children tasted each food. Children also reported their ideal kids' meal. Results show the majority of children liked and preferred three main (turkey sandwich, chicken strips, peanut butter/banana sandwich) and side dishes (yogurt, applesauce, broccoli), with rank order differing slightly by age group. Accepted foods were combined into 11 bundles meeting nutritional criteria. Results highlight healthier kids' meals with evidence of appeal among children in a QSR. Findings can inform future research and may increase the success of healthy eating interventions in these settings.
