Bariatric surgery induces bone loss, but the exact mechanisms by which this process occurs are not fully known. The aims of this 2-year longitudinal study were to (i) investigate the changes in areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and bone turnover markers following sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and (ii) determine the parameters associated with the aBMD variations. Bone turnover markers, sclerostin, periostin and semaphorin 4D were assessed before and 1, 12 and 24 months after SG, and aBMD was determined by DXA at baseline and after 12 and 24 months in 83 patients with obesity. Bone turnover increased from 1 month, peaked at 12 months and remained elevated at 24 months. Periostin and sclerostin presented only modest increases at 1 month, whereas semaphorin 4D showed increases only at 12 and 24 months. A significant aBMD decrease was observed only at total hip regions at 12 and 24 months. This demineralisation was mainly related to body weight loss. In summary, reduced aBMD was observed after SG in the hip region (mechanical-loading bone sites) due to an increase in bone turnover in favour of bone resorption. Periostin, sclerostin and semaphorin 4D levels varied after SG, showing different time lags, but contrary to weight loss, these biological parameters did not seem to be directly implicated in the skeletal deterioration.

This study focused on a subtype of child-to-parent violence, severe tyrannical behaviour (STB). The aim was to examine the clinical characteristics of children and adolescents who physically and/or verbally abuse their parents and the sociodemographic characteristics and generalities of those families. Clinical and sociodemographic data from 73 children and adolescents with STB and their parents have been collected from a randomized control trial. Results showed a specific profile of youth with tyrannical behaviour (aggressive behaviour only in-home settings, only-child, previously mental health care), as well as differential characteristics of these families (late parenthood, high socio-economic status and conjugal family). Children with tyrannical behaviour frequently had psychiatric conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, separation anxiety, sleeping disorders and severe irritability was frequently described. These clinical patterns of combined neurodevelopmental, externalized and internalized symptoms suggest that the combination of individual characteristics, parenting style and parent-child relationship play essential roles in children's STB development.

Objective: This single-blinded, randomized, parallel group superiority trial evaluates whether the Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) program, a 10-session parental-group intervention, was more effective in reducing stress in parents of children aged 6-20 years and displaying severe tyrannical behavior (STB) compared to a treatment as usual (TAU) intervention that provided supportive counseling and psychoeducation. Methods: Eighty two parents of youth aged 6-20 years with STB were enrolled by the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department at the University Hospital of Montpellier (France). A random block and stratified by age (6-12 and 13-20 years) randomization, was performed. All participants were interviewed by independent, blinded to group assignments, research assistants, and completed their assessments at baseline and treatment completion (4 months from baseline). Since this program has not been previously evaluated in this population, the study primarily evaluated the efficacy, using the Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (PSI-SF). The primary outcome was the change from baseline to treatment completion of the PSI-SF total score. Results: Seventy three participants completed the study and were available for analysis (36 NVR and 37 TAU). At completion, between-groups comparison of the change (completion minus baseline) in the total score of PSI-SF was not significant (NVR: -4.3 (± 13.9); TAU: -7.6 (± 19.6); two-sample t-test p = 0.43; effect size of -0.19 [-0.67, 0.28]). Conclusion: Contrary to our expectation, NVR was not superior to TAU in reducing parental stress at completion for parents of children with STB. However, NVR showed positive outcomes in the follow-up, pointing to the importance to implement parental strategies and following this population over longer time periods in future projects.Clinical trial registration: Clinicaltrials.gov, identifier NCT05567276.

Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) induces weight loss but its effects on body composition (BC) are less well known. The aims of this longitudinal study were to analyse the BC changes from the acute phase up to weight stabilization following SG. Variations in the biological parameters related to glucose, lipids, inflammation, and resting energy expenditure (REE) were concomitantly analysed. Fat mass (FM), lean tissue mass (LTM), and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) were determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in 83 obese patients (75.9% women) before SG and 1, 12 and 24 months later. After 1 month, LTM and FM losses were comparable, whereas at 12 months the loss of FM exceeded that of LTM. Over this period, VAT also decreased significantly, biological parameters became normalized, and REE was reduced. For most of the BC, biological and metabolic parameters, no substantial variation was demonstrated beyond 12 months. In summary, SG induced a modification in BC changes during the first 12 months following SG. Although the significant LTM loss was not associated with an increase in sarcopenia prevalence, the preservation of LTM might have limited the reduction in REE, which is a longer-term weight-regain criterion.

(1) Background: The management of metastatic esophageal cancer is more often limited to palliative chemotherapy. Limited data are available regarding the role of surgery that remains controversial. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the survival outcome of surgically treated metastatic esophageal cancer patients. (2) Methods: The present systematic review is designed using the PRISMA guidelines and has been registered with PROSPERO (CRD42019140306). Two reviewers independently searched and identified studies dealing with surgery for stage IV esophageal cancer in the Medline and Google Scholar databases between January 2008 and December 2019. (3) Results: Seven retrospective nonrandomized studies, totaling 1756 patients with stage IV esophageal cancer who underwent curative surgery, were included. Our analysis demonstrates a three-year overall survival rate of 23% (CI 95% 17-31) among patients undergoing surgery. Because only two comparative studies were identified, data compilation and relative risk evaluation through meta-analysis were not possible. (4) Conclusions: Multimodality treatment, including surgery in curative intent, seems associated with a significant chance of three-year overall survival. A prospective evaluation of this approach and validation of adequate selection criteria are needed.

We explored antibody response after first and second BNT162b2 vaccinations, to predict the need for subsequent injections in nursing home (NH) residents. 369 NH residents were tested for IgG against SARS-CoV-2 Receptor-Binding Domain (RBD-IgG) and nucleoprotein-IgG (SARS-CoV-2 IgG II Quant and SARS-CoV-2 IgG Alinity assays, Abbott Diagnostics). In NH residents with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, the first dose elicited high RBD-IgG levels (≥ 4160 AU/mL) in 99/129 cases (76.9%), with no additional antibody gain after the second dose in 74 cases (74.7%). However, a low RBD-IgG level (< 1050 AU/mL) was observed in 28 (21.7%) residents. The persistence of nucleoprotein-IgG and a longer interval between infection and the first dose were associated with a higher RBD-IgG response (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0013, respectively). RBD-IgG below 50 AU/mL after the first dose predicted failure to reach the antibody concentration associated with a neutralizing effect after the second dose (≥ 1050 AU/mL). The BNT162b2 vaccine elicited a strong humoral response after the first dose in a majority of NH residents with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, about one quarter of these residents require a second injection. Consideration should be given to immunological monitoring in NH residents to optimize the vaccine response in this vulnerable population.

The variable domains (V-DOMAIN) of the antigen receptors, immunoglobulins (IG) or antibodies and T cell receptors (TR), which specifically recognize the antigens show a huge diversity in their sequences. This diversity results from the complex mechanisms involved in the synthesis of these domains at the DNA level (rearrangements of the variable (V), diversity (D), and joining (J) genes; N-diversity; and, for the IG, somatic hypermutations). The recognition of V, D, and J as "genes" and their entry in databases mark the creation of IMGT by Marie-Paule Lefranc, and the origin of immunoinformatics in 1989. For 30 years, IMGT®, the international ImMunoGeneTics information system® http://www.imgt.org , has implemented databases and developed tools for IG and TR immunoinformatics, based on the IMGT Scientific chart rules and IMGT-ONTOLOGY concepts and axioms, and more particularly, the princeps ones: IMGT genes and alleles (CLASSIFICATION axiom) and the IMGT unique numbering and IMGT Collier de Perles (NUMEROTATION axiom). This chapter describes the online tools for the characterization and annotation of the expressed V-DOMAIN sequences: (a) IMGT/V-QUEST analyzes in detail IG and TR rearranged nucleotide sequences, (b) IMGT/HighV-QUEST is its high throughput version, which includes a module for the identification of IMGT clonotypes and generates immunoprofiles of expressed V, D, and J genes and alleles, (c) IMGT/StatClonotype performs the pairwise comparison of IMGT/HighV-QUEST immunoprofiles, (d) IMGT/DomainGapAlign analyzes amino acid sequences and is frequently used in antibody engineering and humanization, and (e) IMGT/Collier-de-Perles provides two-dimensional (2D) graphical representations of V-DOMAIN, bridging the gap between sequences and 3D structures. These IMGT® tools are widely used in repertoire analyses of the adaptive immune responses in normal and pathological situations and in the design of engineered IG and TR for therapeutic applications.

INTRODUCTION: The use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy has become a mainstay of modern thoracic surgery practice and the technique of choice for resection of early-stage lung cancers. However, the benefits of VATS following induction therapy are yet to be clarified. This study aims to assess whether VATS lobectomy achieves similar perioperative and oncologic outcomes compared to thoracotomy for nonsmall cell lung cancer after induction therapy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of 72 patients who underwent lung lobectomy after induction therapy in our institution from January 2017 to January 2020. Subsequently, we carried out a comprehensive literature search and pooled our results with available data from previously published studies to perform a meta-analysis. RESULTS: VATS was associated with reduced intraoperative blood loss (P = 0.05) and less perioperative complications (P = 0.04) in our local institution. The meta-analysis comprised nine studies. A total of 943 patients underwent VATS and 2827 patients underwent open lobectomy. VATS was associated with significant shorter surgery duration (P < 0.0001), shorter chest-tube drainage duration (P < 0.0001), and shorter hospital stays (P < 0.0001). Furthermore, there was significantly less perioperative complications (P = 0.006) and less intraoperative blood loss (P = 0.036) in the VATS group. However, there were no significant differences in 3-y overall survival and 3-y disease-free survival rates. CONCLUSIONS: In some selected patients undergoing induction therapy, VATS lobectomy could achieve equivalent perioperative outcomes to thoracotomy but evidence is lacking on oncologic outcomes. Further trials with a focus on oncologic outcomes and longer follow-up are required.

OBJECTIVES: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a prevalent and disabling disease that is the source of significant direct and indirect costs. The current recommended therapeutic strategy is based on the rapid introduction of therapy with conventional Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) combined with regular disease monitoring by the rheumatologist. The onerous nature of such intense monitoring has motivated the development of new, less demanding strategies such as telemedicine. This study aimed to estimate the cost-effectiveness of the connected monitoring of RA patients initiating a new DMARD therapy versus conventional monitoring. METHODS: An economic evaluation based on a randomized controlled trial of 89 patients was conducted. The patients in the intervention group (n=45) were monitored using a connected monitoring interface on a smartphone, while patients in the control group (n=44) were conventionally monitored. Health outcomes were measured as the gain in quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs), assessed using the EuroQol-5D questionnaire. Resource use and health outcomes were collected alongside the trial and at the six-month follow-up using application data and the related clinical case manager time, visits, hospitalisations, and transport records. These outcomes were valued using externally collected data on unit costs and QALY weights. RESULTS: Compared to conventionally monitored patients, patients receiving connected monitoring had a slightly greater but not significant gain in the average QALY of 0.07. The economic analysis found that connected monitoring resulted in a significant cost reduction of 72€ (2927€ vs. 2999€, P<0.01). The incremental cost-utility ratio of the intervention was equal to -1,029€ per QALY (95% CI: -32,033; +24,625) with a 97.8% chance of being cost-effective at a threshold of 30,000€ per QALY gained. CONCLUSION: Implementing EULAR recommendations for RA patients initiating a DMARD treatment using connected monitoring is more efficient and less expensive than conventional care. IMGT®, the international ImMunoGeneTics information system®, http://www.imgt.org/, is at the forefront of the immunogenetics and immunoinformatics fields with more than 30 years of experience. IMGT® makes available databases and tools to the scientific community pertaining to the adaptive immune response, based on the IMGT-ONTOLOGY. We focus on the recent features of the IMGT® databases, tools, reference directories and web resources, within the three main axes of IMGT® research and development. Axis I consists in understanding the adaptive immune response, by deciphering the identification and characterization of the immunoglobulin (IG) and T cell receptor (TR) genes in jawed vertebrates. It is the starting point of the two other axes, namely the analysis and exploration of the expressed IG and TR repertoires based on comparison with IMGT reference directories in normal and pathological situations (Axis II) and the analysis of amino acid changes and functions of 2D and 3D structures of antibody and TR engineering (Axis III).

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify association between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and clinical data at baseline and six months following platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or corticosteroid (CS; cortivazol) injection in patients with plantar fasciitis, and to identify initial MRI criteria associated with a favorable clinical response to treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03857334). MRI examinations of 36 patients with plantar fasciitis lasting more than 3 months who were randomly assigned to receive ultrasound-guided PRP (PRP group, 20 patients) or CS (CS group, 18 patients) injection were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed with respect to plantar fascia thickness, plantar fascia hyperintensity on T2-weighted STIR (HSTIR) images, calcaneal bone marrow and surrounding soft tissues. Clinical evaluation including visual analytic scale (VAS) assessment and MRI examinations were obtained before and 6 months after treatment. Good clinical response was defined as pain VAS decrease > 50% at 6 months. ROC curves with AUC measurements were used to determine cut-off points. RESULTS: In the whole study population, an association was found between MRI features (deep soft tissue and calcaneal bone marrow HSTIR) and pain VAS scores for the first steps of the day (P = 0.028 and P = 0.007, respectively). No significant radioclinical associations on post-treatment MRI examinations were found in either group. Initial coronal thickness of plantar fascia was associated with a good clinical response in the CS group (P < 0.01). ROC curve analysis found that 7-mm or thicker plantar aponeurosis at initial MRI was predictive of good clinical response in patients with CS treatment (Youden index = 0.6). PRP infiltrations were effective regardless of fascia thickness (73% of patients with ≤ 7 mm aponeurosis and 67% for thicker ones). CONCLUSION: Initial facia thickness (> 7 mm) is predictive of good clinical response six months after CS injection, whereas PRP injection shows effectiveness regardless of fascia thickness.

BACKGROUND: Most obese women with low-trauma fractures present normal areal bone mineral density (aBMD), suggesting that other bone parameters are more determinant for fracture risk in these patients. OBJECTIVES: (i) Determine the effects of obesity in young women on areal bone mineral density (aBMD), bone geometry, strength, and volumetric BMD determined by advanced DXA-based methods; (ii) model the profiles of bone parameters for each population with age; and (iii) determine the factors related to body composition (i.e. lean tissue mass and fat mass) potentially implicated in the "bone adaptation" in the femoral region. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Two hundred and twenty adolescent and young women from 18 to 35 years old were enrolled in this study: 128 patients with obesity and 92 age-matched (±6 months) normal-weight controls. aBMD was determined with DXA, whereas hip geometry and strength parameters were assessed by hip structural analysis (HSA) and volumetric BMD by 3D-SHAPER® software. RESULTS: Compared with controls, subjects with obesity presented significantly higher aBMD at all bone sites, but the difference was greater at hip compared with lumbar spine or radius. Bone size estimates (i.e. cortical thickness), as well as strength estimates (i.e. cross-sectional area) were higher at all femoral subregions including femoral neck, intertrochanteric region and femoral shaft in young women with obesity. In whole proximal femur and all femoral compartments, vBMD was also higher in subjects with obesity, but the difference between groups was greater for cortical vBMD compared with trabecular vBMD. When hip bone parameters were modelled for each group from individual values, maximal values were reached between 20 and 26 years in both groups but, whatever the age, subjects with obesity presented higher values than controls. In both groups, lean body mass (LBM) was the parameter most positively associated with the greatest number of bone parameters studied. CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed that young women with obesity presented higher aBMD, better hip geometry and greater strength compared with normal-weight controls. Additionally, cortical and trabecular compartments measured by 3D-SHAPER® were favourably and concomitantly modified. However, it remains to be demonstrated whether the evaluation of these new parameters would provide better prediction of fracture risk in this population than aBMD.

BACKGROUND: Recent guidelines on transfusion in cardiac surgery suggest that hemoglobin might not be the only criterion to trigger transfusion. Central venous oxygen saturation (Svo2), which is related to the balance between tissue oxygen delivery and consumption, may help the decision process of transfusion. We designed a randomized study to test whether central Svo2-guided transfusion could reduce transfusion incidence after cardiac surgery. METHODS: This single center, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial was conducted on adult patients after cardiac surgery in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary university hospital. Patients were screened preoperatively and were assigned randomly to two study groups (control or Svo2) if they developed anemia (hemoglobin less than 9 g/dl), without active bleeding, during their ICU stay. Patients were transfused at each anemia episode during their ICU stay except the Svo2 patients who were transfused only if the pretransfusion central Svo2 was less than or equal to 65%. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients transfused in the ICU. The main secondary endpoints were (1) number of erythrocyte units transfused in the ICU and at study discharge, and (2) the proportion of patients transfused at study discharge. RESULTS: Among 484 screened patients, 100 were randomized, with 50 in each group. All control patients were transfused in the ICU with a total of 94 transfused erythrocyte units. In the Svo2 group, 34 (68%) patients were transfused (odds ratio, 0.031 [95% CI, 0 to 0.153]; P < 0.001 vs. controls), with a total of 65 erythrocyte units. At study discharge, eight patients of the Svo2 group remained nontransfused and the cumulative count of erythrocyte units was 96 in the Svo2 group and 126 in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: A restrictive transfusion strategy adjusted with central Svo2 may allow a significant reduction in the incidence of transfusion.

OBJECTIVES: In RA, telemedicine may allow tight control of disease activity while reducing hospital visits. We developed a smartphone application connected with a physician's interface to monitor RA patients. We aimed to assess the performance of this e-Health solution in comparison with routine practice in the management of patients with RA. METHODS: A six-month pragmatic, randomized, controlled, prospective, clinical trial was conducted in RA patients with high to moderate disease activity starting a new DMARD therapy. Two groups were established: 'connected monitoring' and 'conventional monitoring'. The primary outcome was the number of physical visits between baseline and six months. Secondary outcomes included adherence, satisfaction, changes in clinical, functional and health status scores (Short-Form 12). RESULTS: Of the 94 randomized patients, 89 completed study: 44 in the 'conventional monitoring' arm and 45 in the 'connected monitoring' arm. The total number of physical visits between required baseline and six-month visits was significantly lower in the 'connected monitoring' group [0.42 (0.58) vs 1.93 (0.55); P <0.05]. No differences between groups were observed in the clinical and functional scores. A better quality of life for Short-Form 12 subscores (Role-Physical and Role-Emotional) were found in the 'connected monitoring' group. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that connected monitoring reduces the number of physical visits while maintaining a tight control of disease activity and improving quality of life in patients with RA starting a new treatment. BACKGROUND: The advent of new, potent, disease-modifying therapies has dramatically changed the management of multiple sclerosis (MS). Along with these possibilities, it is crucial to better recognize patients who are at risk of first line treatment (FLT) failure and switch to highly effective therapies (HET). OBJECTIVES: To identify baseline prognostic factors associated with FLT failure in relapsing remitting MS (RR-MS) patients. METHODS: We included recently diagnosed RR-MS patients starting an FLT identified from 3 French MS centers databases. Baseline characteristics were included in a multivariable Cox analysis to identify the main factors associated with FLT failure. RESULTS: Eight hundred sixty-three patients were included. We observed an overall rate of treatment failure of 23.5%. The main baseline characteristics associated with treatment failure were age <26 years at treatment start (HR= 2.1, p<0.001), EDSS ≥2 (HR=2.1, p<0.001) and ≥2relapses in the previous year (HR=1.5, p=0.04). The association with the presence of gadolinium enhancement on MRI was not statistically significant. EDSS progression was only significantly associated with age at treatment start and treatment failure. CONCLUSION: Our series demonstrates that some clinical and imaging factors are associated with treatment failure, and should be considered when planning treatment strategy in patients with recently diagnosed RR-MS.

Access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) for obese women varies across centers, and the impact of obesity on IVF outcomes is widely discussed. We assessed the impact of obesity and its severity on live birth rate (LBR) after IVF. We included women treated for IVF in our center. Data were prospectively collected in the BabySentryTM software. LBR per cycle and cumulative LBR including all attempts of the couple were calculated, considering transfer of both fresh and frozen embryos. Of 1588 included women (2379 controlled ovarian stimulations), 70.2%, 19.5%, 7.9%, and 2.4% were normal-weight, overweight, class I obesity, and class II/III obesity, respectively. For each cycle, LBR did not differ according to BMI category. Adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for obtaining a live birth at the first cycle were 1.11 (0.78-1.58) for overweight, 1.17 (0.70-1.95) for class I obese, and 1.05 (0.48-2.31) for class II/III obese women, as compared with normal-weight women. Similarly, no significant associations were found at cycles 2, 3, and 4. Cumulative LBR increased with the number of cycles, independently of the BMI class (p log-rank = 0.91). After adjustment, obesity status did not impact significantly the miscarriage rate, regardless of the cycle. In conclusion, neither women obesity nor its severity impacted the cumulative LBR after IVF.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery induces weight loss but its acute and longer-term effects on body composition (BC) are largely unknown. OBJECTIVES: To determine the BC changes in obese French patients after sleeve gastrectomy (SG) at 1 and 12 months. SETTING: Obesity Reference Center, University Hospital of Montpellier, France. METHODS: Whole and localized BC (lean tissue mass [LTM] and fat mass [FM]) and abdominal adiposity, including total adipose tissue, visceral adipose tissue, and subcutaneous adipose tissue, were determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in 30 obese patients (25 women, 83.3%) just before SG and 1 and 12 months later. RESULTS: The mean weight loss was -9.7 ± 2.6 kg at 1 month and -32.1 ± 10.3 kg at 12 months. This weight loss was due to an equivalent decrease in LTM and FM in the acute phase, while FM loss appeared to be the main cause in the chronic phase. For each component (LTM and FM), the loss was relatively homogeneous across sites. Compared with the presurgical values, android and gynoid tissue and total adipose tissue, visceral adipose tissue, and subcutaneous adipose tissue changed significantly over the 12-month period. No basal clinical parameter was predictive of the variation in LTM, whereas age and the whole-body LTM/FM ratio were associated with the decrease in FM. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that SG induces a clear modification in BC, characterized by a decrease in LTM in the acute phase and sustained FM loss in the first year. These results suggest that the early phase should be targeted for strategies to reduce LTM loss, which is a longer-term weight-regain criterion. Further studies to investigate the potential advantages of visceral adipose tissue compared with whole-body FM for improving post-SG co-morbidities should be performed.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) induces an acute alteration in bone metabolism. Although the aetiology of the bone disturbances is not precisely known, immobilisation reduces mechanical loading and the morphology of osteocytes, which are the primary mechanosensors. Periostin and sclerostin are secreted mostly by osteocytes and are involved in bone's mechanical response. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to determine whether individuals with SCI present alterations in serum periostin and sclerostin and to assess their relationships with bone mineral density, bone turnover markers, fracture status, time since injury, densitometric osteoporosis and paraplegic vs. tetraplegic status. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: One hundred and thirty-one individuals with SCI (96 males and 35 females; 42.8 ±â€¯13.7 yr old) with a mean 14.2 ±â€¯12.1 years since the time of injury were evaluated and compared with 40 able-bodied controls in a cross-sectional study. Periostin and sclerostin were assayed by ELISA from Biomedica® (Vienna, Austria), and bone turnover markers and areal bone mineral density (aBMD) were concomitantly analysed. RESULTS: Compared with controls, individuals with SCI presented higher periostin (p < 0.01), lower sclerostin (p < 0.001), similar markers of bone turnover levels and lower aBMD at the hip. Compared with chronic individuals, bone turnover markers, sclerostin excepted, values were higher as well as aBMD at hip in individuals with acute SCI. Moreover, the aBMD differences were more marked in tetraplegic than paraplegic individuals. Bone mineral density, fracture status, densitometric osteoporosis and paraplegia vs. tetraplegia did not seem to substantially influence the values of biological markers, sclerostin excepted. CONCLUSION: This study showed for the first time that individuals with SCI presented higher periostin levels than healthy controls only during the acute phase. Conversely, sclerostin levels are lower whatever the post-injury time. Fractures and densitometric osteoporosis were not associated with differences in these two biological markers, whereas paraplegia vs. tetraplegia and fragility fracture status seemed to influence sclerostin levels only.
