RESUMO

The optical properties of ZnO nanorod (NR) arrays were investigated by optical total transmittance (TT) and diffuse reflectance (DR) spectroscopy in the visible region. The NRs were grown electrochemically in a three-electrode cell over a glass/fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate. The mean length, radius, and density of NR samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The results were correlated with the observed optical properties. Since light scattering for these NR arrays is highly dependent on their morphology, therefore, a model for light scattering based in the Mie theory for cylinders was implemented to understand the observed spectra. The mean scattering and extinction cross sections were calculated from the morphology of the samples. They were used to fit the DR spectra. From the fittings, the TT spectra of the samples could be calculated. A good agreement with the experimental results was obtained. This indicates that the implemented model represents well the observed scattering phenomena.

By combining x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and AC susceptibility measurements we investigate the evolution of structural and superconducting properties of La-doped Bi-2201 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) under different annealing conditions. We find that the main effect of oxygen annealing is to improve the crystal coherence by enabling La cation migration to the Sr sites. This activates the desired hole doping. Short-time Ar annealing removes the interstitial oxygen between the BiO layers, fine adjusting the effective hole doping. The superconducting critical temperature is consequently enhanced. However, longer annealings result in phase separation and segregation of the homologous compound Bi-1201. We attribute this effect to the loss of Bi during the annealing.

RESUMO

We consider a system of adaptive self-interested agents interacting by playing an iterated pairwise prisoner's dilemma (PD) game. Each player has two options: either cooperate (C) or defect (D). Agents have no (long term) memory to reciprocate nor identifying tags to distinguish C from D. We show how their 16 possible elementary Markovian (one-step memory) strategies can be cast in a simple general formalism in terms of an estimator of expected utilities Delta*. This formalism is helpful to map a subset of these strategies into an Ising Hamiltonian in a straightforward way. This connection in turn serves to shed light on the evolution of the iterated games played by agents, which can represent a broad variety of individuals from firms of a market to species coexisting in an ecosystem. Additionally, this magnetic description may be useful to introduce noise in a natural and simple way. The equilibrium states reached by the system depend strongly on whether the dynamics are synchronous or asynchronous and also on the system connectivity.

RESUMO

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals very surprising strain-induced effects on the electronic band dispersion of epitaxial La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4-delta) thin films. In strained films we measure a band that crosses the Fermi level (E(F)) well before the Brillouin zone boundary. This is in contrast to the flat band reported in unstrained single crystals and in our unstrained films, as well as in contrast to the band flattening predicted by band structure calculations for in-plane compressive strain. In spite of the density of states reduction near E(F), the critical temperature increases in strained films with respect to unstrained samples. These results require a radical departure from commonly accepted notions about strain effects on high temperature superconductors, with possible general repercussions on superconductivity theory.
