RESUMO

The main target of the present research was a full assessment of the toxicity effects and biocompatibility of a Ti/Al-alloy device coated with biogenic hydroxyapatite (bHA) when implanted in dogs in comparison with those of an uncoated Ti/Al-alloy device. The coating of the alloy was carried out using controlled high-velocity suspension flame spray (HVSFS) technique. Both coated and uncoated devices were implanted in dogs' femur bones for different time periods (45 days and 90 days). Bone-formation ability and healing were followed up, and blood analysis was performed, at Time zero (immediately post surgery), and then at 3 days, 45 days, and 90 days post surgery. Bone mineral density checks, radiological scans of the femur bone, and histological analysis were also conducted. The in-vivo study results proved that implantation of a device made from bHA-coated Ti/Al alloy in dogs' femur bones is completely safe. This is due to the high osteoconductivity of the coated alloy, which enables the formation of new bone and a full connection between new and original bone material. At 90 days post surgery, the coated alloy had been completely digested within the original bone; thus, it appeared as a part of the femur bone and not as a foreign body. Both the scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray and histology analysis findings affirmed the results. Furthermore, the blood tests indicated no toxicity effects during the 90 days of implantation.

RESUMO

The target of the recent study is to achieve a significant inexpensive and eco-friendly way for getting ZTA/HA composites, based on the nano-HA derived from the eggshell biogenic source. Combining simultaneously the porous structure; which is considered as a bone formation key, with developed mechanical properties and adequate biocompatibility, is another purpose of this study. Furthermore, the impact of ZTA addition from 10-30 mass-%, fabricated by uniaxial pressing and sintering at 1200-1300 °C for 2 h, on the physical and mechanical properties, microstructure and phase composition of ZTA/HA composite bodies was investigated. The results demonstrated that the increasing of ZTA content increases the bodies' apparent porosity and decreases the bulk density due to the decomposition of HA into ß-TCP. Where the formation of ß-TCP possessed the predominant impact on the mechanical properties of the sintered ZTA/HA composites. ICP, SEM, EDX and thin film XRD results of composites containing 20 mass-% ZTA affirmed the excellent bioactivity of the bodies.

RESUMO

AIM: To study the efficacy of Na-butyrate encapsulated in palm fat on performance of broiler chickens experimentally infected with necrotic enteritis (NE) with the determination of its protective effect against the changes in the gene expression profiles and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 800 one-day-old male Arbor Acres Plus broiler chickens were randomly allocated into four groups for 5 weeks. Na-butyrate was supplemented at dosages of 1 kg/ton for starter diet, 0.5 kg/ton for grower diet, and 0.25 kg/ton for finisher diet (presence or absence). Birds of groups 1 and 2 were inoculated by crop gavages with 4×10(8) CFU/ml/bird of Clostridium perfringens in phosphate buffered saline for 4 successive days, from 14 to 17 days of age to produce NE. RESULTS: Addition of Na-butyrate, encapsulated in palm fat, to ration of experimentally infected broilers with NE resulted in increased final body weight, at 35 days of age, reduced total feed consumption, improved feed conversion ratio, reduced cumulative mortality, and increased production number. There were increased intestinal diameter, intestinal length, and significantly increased the weight of bursa of Fabricius(BF) with higher hemagglutination inhibition titers against Newcastle disease (ND) vaccination versus untreated infected and untreated negative control birds. The results showed increased expression levels of alpha-toxin and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase in the bursa tissues of broilers infected with C. perfringens. However, the expression levels of these genes in broilers treated with Na-butyrate were similar to the non-infected control group. Supplementation of broilers with Na-butyrate increased the expression level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and decreased the DNA fragmentation induced by C. perfringens. CONCLUSION: Na-butyrate significantly improved chicken broiler body weights, increased relative weights of BF, increased antibody titers against ND vaccination, numerically lowered mortality due to C. perfringens infection, increased the expression level of IGF-1, and decreased the DNA fragmentation induced by C. perfringens. Obtained results point out the effectiveness of Na-butyrate encapsulated in palm fat in improving the production performance variables, immune response, and intestinal morphology in experimentally induced NE as well as in non-infected chicken broilers.

RESUMO

The reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism (RT-PCR/RFLP) technique was used for identification and characterization of Egyptian field strains of infectious bursal disease viruses (IBDVs) that caused severe outbreaks with (30%-60%) mortality rate. Twenty-four bursal samples collected from 24 field outbreaks in commercially reared chicken flocks experiencing signs typical of infectious bursal disease (IBD) were used. Ten of the bursal samples examined were determined to contain IBDV as evidenced by amplification of a 743-bp region of the VP2 gene of IBDV by RT-PCR. The RT-PCR products of the detected viruses were characterized by digestion with three restriction enzymes, BstN, MboI, and SpI. Three different RT-PCR/RFLP profiles were observed. Seven of the detected viruses had RFLP profiles identical to the very virulent European strains of IBDV (vvIBDVs). One virus had a RFLP profile identical to the U.S. classic vaccine strain, and one virus had a unique RFLP profile. The clinical history of the outbreaks and the presence of the SspI site in the 743-bp RT-PCR fragment were the criteria for designating the viruses as belonging to the very virulent (vv) phenotype.

RESUMO

Percutaneous techniques have dramatically changed our approach to coronary and peripheral revascularization. Intracranial atherosclerosis is a highly morbid disease; however, techniques for revascularization are still in evolution. The authors comprise a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neuroradiologists, and interventional cardiologists who have collaborated in treating fifteen patients with symptomatic intracranial stenosis who have failed medical therapy. The acute success rate (100%) and one-year freedom from death and stroke (93.4%) using balloon angioplasty and provisional stenting are encouraging. A surprising observation in this patient cohort was that 53% of patients had improvement or resolution of a deficit that was chronic and presumed to be permanent and irreversible. This type of chronic but reversible deficit is termed "brain angina". The background, rationale for a multidisciplinary team, techniques, and preliminary results of intracranial angioplasty with provisional stenting are presented.

RESUMO

A 53-year-old patient had a complex ventricular arrhythmia, which most likely was an intermittent pure (nonmodulated) parasystole, due to protection limited to the first part of the cycle coexisting with exit block. However, other interpretations of the observations were possible. Foremost among these was modulated parasystole with partial protection or with an attenuated or nondetectable early delaying phase, with exit block. Interestingly, the parasystole appeared to have fulfilled the dynamic rules regarding the number of sinus beats interposed between manifest parasystolic beats, as has been reported for pure or weakly modulated parasystole. This case corroborates unusual manifestations of an arrhythmia, which because of its newly found complexities and various possible interpretations seems to be discussed with decreasing frequency in most textbooks on general cardiology.

RESUMO

In a cross-sectional study, the activity, electrophoretic mobility and genotypes of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) were determined among healthy, UAE national school boys from Al-Ain District in the United Arab Emirates, The prevalence of G6PD deficiency in this population sample was 11%. The majority of G6PD-deficient subjects were descendants of Omani, Baluchi or Yemeni migrants. Of 18 deficient subjects, 16 had an enzyme activity of < 10% of normal while 2 had an activity of just above 10%. Electrophoresis was performed on 166 samples and showed that, apart from deficient samples, all had the normal mobility of G6PD type B. Of the 18 deficient subjects, 14 had the B type mobility of G6PD Mediterranean and 4 had the A type mobility of G6PD A-. Genotyping demonstrated that 10 had the Mediterranean mutation while 3 had the A- mutation, consistent with their electrophoretic mobility. Another 3 had the G6PD Aures mutation, recently described as polymorphic in Algeria and Spain. The mutations in the remaining 2 subjects have not yet been identified.

RESUMO

We have previously demonstrated that a 600 MHz transducer enables the visualization of cellular detail in specimens of myocardium. However, lower-frequency transducers are more practical and provide better tissue penetration for possible in vivo application of this technique. This study was designed to ascertain the lowest frequency at which cellular detail can be imaged. We performed ultrasound imaging of 5 microns sections of 14 samples of myocardium. Each specimen was examined serially with 600 MHz, 400 MHz, 200 MHz, and 100 MHz transducers. Normal cardiac myocytes and pathologic phenomena such as fibrosis, cell fallout, and round cell infiltration were clearly identified with a 600 MHz transducer. Although there was a slight decrease in resolution, normal and pathologic phenomena were also identified with 400 and 200 MHz transducers. However, cellular detail could not be adequately identified with a 100 MHz transducer. In conclusion, transducer frequencies of 600 to 200 MHz enable visualization of cell detail and detection of pathologic changes in the myocardium. A transducer frequency of at least 200 MHz is probably required for possible in vivo application of this technique.

RESUMO

Twenty-five pregnant women with symptomatic mitral valve stenosis (mean valve area, 1.1 +/- 0.25 cm2) were managed by initiation or modification of beta-adrenergic receptor blockade with the use of either propranolol or atenolol. Significant improvement of symptoms occurred in 23 patients (92%) (p less than 0.01); the mean maternal heart rate was reduced significantly from 86 +/- 4 to 78 +/- 5 beats/min (p less than 0.0001). The overall fetal heart rate ranged between 130 to 150 beats/min during treatment. Only two patients required urgent closed mitral valvotomy, after pulmonary edema developed as a result of poor compliance to beta-blockade. All patients were safely delivered of infants at term. Fetal heart rates ranged between 120 to 140 beats/min at delivery. There was no maternal or fetal death. Pregnant woman with symptomatic mitral valve stenosis can be safely managed with beta-blockade, giving significant reduction in the incidence of pulmonary edema with no unwanted neonatal side effect.

RESUMO

Phenol-acetic acid-water extracts of 13 recognized mycoplasma and acholeplasma reference strains of bovine habitat were subjected to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A characteristic electrophoretic profile was obtained for each strain and the relative mobility (Rm) values of the major protein fractions were determined. All examined strains had a common protein band of 33.3 Rm value. Comparison of electrophoretic patterns obtained from different reference strains revealed 2 to 7 protein bands with the same Rm values in a number of strains. A possible correlation with antigenic relatedness is discussed.
