RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The main purposes of the nursing profession are to protect and improve health and to prevent and heal diseases. It is crucial to investigate the factors that can influence nurses' ability to enhance their performance in their professional lives and conduct the nursing care process more qualitatively and effectively. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between emotional intelligence and compassionate communication in nurses. METHODS: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted with 140 nurses working in various units of the public hospital in Kilis, Turkey. Data were collected through a demographic information form, Emotional Intelligence Scale, and Compassionate Communication Scale. RESULTS: It was determined that nurses' emotional intelligence and compassionate communication were above average. A significant association was found between nurses' emotional intelligence and compassionate communication (F = 16.08, P < .001) and emotional intelligence explains 10% of the variance in compassionate communication (R = 0.323, R2 = 0.104). CONCLUSIONS: Emotional intelligence and compassionate communication should be taken into consideration so that nurses can recognize and understand patients' emotions, alleviate their hurt, and deliver delicate, kind, and compassionate care.

RESUMO

AIM: Determine the correlation of the intrapersonal intelligence levels of nurses with their emotional contagion and caring behaviours. BACKGROUND: Intrapersonal intelligence is an introverted concept that includes the capacity to understand and reflect one's self. A high level of intrapersonal intelligence contributes morally to the world and promotes success in professions with a heavy moral dimension. It is stated that emotional contagion, which is defined as the transfer of emotions and moods from one person to another, can occur in groups of two or more people. Within this context, nurses who are affected by emotional contagion may be more likely to withdraw from or desensitise to the people who cause this effect. Both situations may lead to the disruption of essential and non-deferrable care and formation of negative effects on nurses' caring behaviours. METHODS: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 257 nurses working in the Gaziantep province. A "Personal Information Form", the "Multiple Intelligence Inventory", the "Emotional Contagion Scale" and "Caring Behaviours Inventory" were used as data collection tools in the study. RESULTS: It was found that the mean scores of the nurses were 39.76 ± 5.02 for Intrapersonal Intelligence, 50.09 ± 8.32 for Emotional Contagion, and 5.06 ± 0.75 for Caring Behaviours. CONCLUSIONS: It was determined that the intrapersonal intelligence levels, emotional contagion and caring behaviour levels of the nurses were above average. As the intrapersonal intelligence levels of the participants increased, so did their emotional contagion and caring behaviours.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Individuals' beliefs in conspiracy theories and anti-vaccination defense play a role in the rates of COVID-19 spread. PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the perception of trust in, and the perception of conspiracy theories regarding vaccines among those with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and resistance in a province in Turkey. METHODS: This study was conducted with 1244 individuals who agreed to participate in the study in the province with the lowest vaccination rate in Turkey. The 'Personal Information Form' and the 'COVID-19 Vaccine Perception and Attitude Scale' were used to collect data. FINDINGS: Those who were resistant to vaccines had a low mean score on the Perception of Trust and a high mean score on the Perception of Conspiracy. The variable of conspiracy perception had a significantly negative and high effect on the perception of trust. CONCLUSION: The participants were highly resistant to COVID-19 vaccines. Their perception level of trust in COVID-19 vaccines was moderate and their perception level of conspiracy was high.

RESUMO

Health professionals constitute a group that is at a high risk of COVID-19. They have been found to experience difficulties in many issues, one of which is that they face the risk of infecting themselves and others due to interaction with high-risk patients. The present study investigates how demographical and individual factors and work addiction affected work-life balance and mental health needs of health professionals. The data of the present study were collected in the first wave of pandemic. The hypothesized structural equation model was rejected based on the fit indices. The second analysis of modified model was significant and indicated that whether health professionals live alone or with others such as family members had direct effects on work addiction, indirect effects on work-life balance, and needs for mental health. In addition, gender and working hours had direct effects on work-life balance. The highest effect on work-life balance was caused by work addiction. Moreover, work addiction had a moderate effect on mental health needs. As a result, the current study showed that work-life balance, work addiction, and the need for mental health were affected during the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Monocyte to high density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) is a new instrument for giving notice inflammation, which plays a main role in schizophrenia. Thus, in this study, our goal was to investigate the possible association between MHR and schizophrenia. METHODS: The participants of this study consisted of 75 schizophrenia patients and 74 healthy individuals (control group). The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale was used to collect data from the patient group. Complete blood count parameters and lipid profile were analyzed in all study participants. RESULTS: The patients with schizophrenia had higher MHR values (15.04 ± 3.31 in schizophrenia patients and 12.62 ± 2.99 in controls; p = 0.001). Monocyte counts and MHR of the schizophrenia patients were significantly higher than the control group. There was a significant and positive correlation between age, body mass index, severity of disease and MHR. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this study was the first to demonstrate inflammatory markers such as MHR levels in schizophrenia patients. Both monocyte counts and MHR values in schizophrenia patients were higher than the control group. MHR might be an available and useful inflammatory marker to evaluate inflammation in schizophrenia patients.

RESUMO

Although electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a safe and efficacious treatment, there is a widespread negative view of ECT in public and professional circles. Previous studies that reported psychiatric patients' and their relatives' feelings and attitudes toward ECT revealed generally positive results. However, there are no data focusing on bipolar patients' and their relatives' attitudes toward ECT. In this study, the perspectives of 70 bipolar patients and their 70 relatives were examined before ECT. The study showed that the majority of patients and relatives believed they had not received adequate information about ECT, but they were satisfied with the treatment, found it beneficial, and maintained a positive attitude toward its use. The most commonly reported side effect was memory impairment. This is the first study focusing on bipolar patients' and their relatives' attitudes toward ECT in the literature.
