RESUMO
Alkaline sucrose solution was demonstrated to be a good solvent for the solubilization of water-insoluble drugs. At high concentration and alkaline pH, sucrose solubilizes water-insoluble molecules through intramolecular conformations. Tetracyline and chloramphenicol, when dissolved in alkaline sucrose solution, retained their bactericidal activity. Gel permeation-chromatography analysis and atomic-force-microscopy studies confirmed the formation of sucrose-antibiotics complex.

The aim of this study was to evaluate massetteric silent period and reflex in patients affected by progenia, before and after maxillofacial surgery, in order to determine their clinical utility. The electrophysiological changes generated by malocclusion secondary to prognatism have been evaluated before and after maxillofacial corrective surgery in 14 patients aged between 18 and 36 years. The masseteric reflex and the silent period (SP) of the masseteric muscles elicited by stimulation of the mental nerve were recorded. A correspondence between the neurophysiological and clinical findings was present in 12 of 14 patients, in particular concerning the latency of SP2. This study demonstrates that the masseteric silent period may be used as a diagnostic and prognostic support, before and after surgery for malocclusion.

A procedure for performing stereocontrolled aziridine ring-opening reactions with chiral enolates derived from (S,S)-(+)-pseudoephedrine amides has been developed leading to gamma-aminoamides in good yields. The diastereoselectivity of the reaction becomes controlled by the presence of the chiral auxiliary on the enolate, although the stereogenic center contained in the structure of the aziridine has a striking influence on the stereochemical course of the reaction which results in the presence of the corresponding matched and mismatched combinations. Besides, the sense of the asymmetric induction of the chiral auxiliary has resulted to be the opposite to the one found with other type of electrophiles, although it is in good agreement with the trend observed in the reaction of the same kind of enolates with epoxides. Finally, the obtained gamma-aminoamide adducts were converted into enantiopure gamma-amino acids, gamma-aminoesters, and pyrrolidin-2-ones using easy to perform and high yielding reactions.
RESUMO
[reaction: see text]. The reaction of an (S,S)-(+)-pseudoephedrine acetamide based enolate with several imines afforded smoothly and with full stereochemical control a series of beta-substituted alpha-methyl-beta-aminoamides that upon hydrolysis/esterification afforded the corresponding beta-aminoester derivatives in good yields and in almost enantiomerically pure form.

A very efficient method for performing stereoselective aldol reactions is reported. The reaction of (S, S)-(+)-pseudoephedrine-derived propionamide enolates with several aldehydes yielded exclusively one of the four possible diastereomers in good yields, although transmetalation of the firstly generated lithium enolate with a zirconium(II) salt, prior to the addition of the aldehyde, is necessary in order to achieve high syn selectivity. The so-formed syn-alpha-methyl-beta-hydroxy amides were transformed into other valuable chiral nonracemic synthons such as alpha-methyl-beta-hydroxyacids, esters, and ketones. Finally, a stereocontrolled reduction procedure starting from the so-obtained alpha-methyl-beta-hydroxy ketones has been developed allowing the synthesis of either 1,3-syn- or 1,3-anti-alpha-methyl-1,3-diols in almost enantiopure form by choosing the appropriate reaction conditions.
RESUMO
A rare case of nodular fasciitis arising in the buccinator muscle sheath in a 76-year-old patient is reported. Nodular fasciitis is a benign proliferation of fibroblasts, often mistaken for a sarcoma because of its rapid growth, rich cellularity and high mitotic activity. Although the cause of nodular fasciitis is unknown, it is likely that the fibroblastic proliferation is due to local injury or an inflammatory process.

The Olympic Games are the focus of attention for millions of people in the world and provide the pinnacle of sporting excellence. The health and welfare of the participating sportsmen and women is paramount for successful competition and this must include oral health. The purpose of this paper is to describe a study undertaken at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 into the attendance patterns and oral health of patients visiting the dental clinic provided in the Olympic Village. Recommendations are made for the conduct of future dental care facilities at Olympic Games and the collection of data.

Studies of application of the Rocket clip compared with the tubal ring were conducted at three sites. Procedures were randomly assigned to the patients; 332 women were sterilized with the tubal ring and 331 were sterilized with the Rocket clip. The occlusion devices were applied via a minilaparotomy incision. Surgical difficulties and injuries and technical failures occurred with comparable frequency in the two groups. There were two method failures in each tubal occlusion group; the 24-month life-table pregnancy rate was 1.0 per 100 women in the tubal ring group and 0.9 per 100 in the Rocket clip group. The Rocket spring-loaded clip appears to be as safe, effective, and easy to apply as the tubal ring for tubal occlusion.
