Background: Emergency physicians are at the forefront of the medical system in the face of the COVID-19 crisis. Identifying the challenges, along with the strategies and effective measures implemented by them in the face of the COVID-19 crisis, can be a roadmap for future crisis management planning. This study aims to explain the challenges faced by emergency physicians regarding COVID-19. Methods: This study is a qualitative content analysis. Data were collected using individual and semistructured interviews. Twenty-seven emergency medical specialists in Fars University of Medical Sciences, Iran, participated in the study by purposive sampling method and were interviewed using semistructured interviews. Results: Participants' experience of COVID-19 led to the extraction of four main themes, including structural factors, threats to the health of the medical team, fluctuations of extremism and wastage in the face of COVID-19, and the country's policymaking hierarchy. Conclusions: Emergency physicians face challenges such as structural factors, health threats, extreme fluctuations, and national policymaking. To avoid surprises and threats, they must predict acute scenarios, provide necessary equipment, address skilled manpower shortages, and adopt appropriate management policies. This includes culture-building, cross-sector coordination, planning, and efficient management to prevent virus spread.

Osteoarthritis (OA) arises from a intricate interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Numerous studies have explored the link between the growth differentiation factor 5 (GDF-5) +104T>C polymorphism and OA risk, but the findings have been inconclusive. We carried out a case-control study with 704 OA cases and 418 healthy controls. Furthermore, we conducted a meta-analysis by thoroughly searching the literature for relevant studies published until 1 September, 2023. The combined odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals were used to assess the correlation's strength. A total of 47 independent case-control studies, including 17,602 OA cases and 30,947 controls, were analyzed. Of these, 31 studies (11,176 cases, 16,724 controls) focused on knee OA, 8 studies (3,973 cases, 8,055 controls) examined hip OA, and 6 studies (2244 cases, 5965 controls) investigated hand OA. Overall, our findings suggest that the GDF-5 + 104T>C polymorphism has a protectibe role in development of OA in global scale. Subgroup analyses by ethnicity indicated that this genetic variation provides protection against OA in Caucasian, Asian, and African populations. Further subgroup analysis based on the type of OA showed a decreased risk of knee and hand OA associated with this variation, but not for hip OA. Our combined data indicates that the GDF-5 + 104T>C polymorphism offers protection against the development of OA in general, as well as knee and hand OA. Nevertheless, there was no correlation found between this polymorphism and the development of hip OA.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to investigate the association of IL-6 and IL-10 polymorphisms with susceptibility to glaucoma by analyzing all relevant individual studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant articles were gathered from PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, WanFang, and CNKI databases up to 15 October 2023. Odds ratios (ORs) were used to evaluate the association strengths, along with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Seven case-control studies involving 1408 cases and 1789 controls on the IL-6 -174 G>C polymorphism, and three studies with 675 cases and 1100 controls on the IL-6 -572 G>C were included. Moreover, three separate studies, each comprising 442 cases and 672 controls, investigated the IL-10 -592C>A, -819T>C, and -1082A>G polymorphisms. The combined data indicated a significant association between -592C>A, -819T>C, and -1082A>G at IL-10 gene and IL-6 -572 G>C with glaucoma susceptibility, with no correlation found for IL-6 -174 G>C. CONCLUSIONS: The study found that IL-10 -592C>A, -819T>C, -1082A>G, and IL-6 -572 G>C polymorphisms were linked to glaucoma risk. However, no significant association was observed for IL-6 -174 G>C. These findings imply a possible connection between genetic variations in these genes and glaucoma risk. Further research is crucial to fully understand the underlying mechanisms and their significance in managing and preventing glaucoma.

Background: The ageing population poses significant challenges to healthcare systems, necessitating the establishment of high-functioning, integrated frameworks for elderly healthcare. This study aimed to explore the key challenges associated with the stewardship of elderly care in Iran and to develop a holistic stewardship framework. Methods: For this qualitative study, thirty semi-structured interviews were conducted with key Iranian healthcare stakeholders, utilizing purposive and snowball sampling during 2021-2022. Inductive open coding was utilized to generate new concepts related to key stewardship challenges. The World Health Organization's conceptual framework, outlining the three stewardship tasks, served as the basis for crafting a tailored framework for elderly healthcare stewardship in Iran. Results: Fourteen main challenges and 38 sub-challenges were identified for elderly healthcare stewardship in Iran, categorized according to the WHO framework's three stewardship tasks. Challenges related to WHO stewardship task 1, involving health policy formulation and vision definition, included challenges in vision definition, planning, policymaking, and intergovernmental institutional superiority. Challenges related to WHO stewardship task 2, delineating governance and stewardship through control and regulation, encompassed issues such as support for the elderly, system responsiveness, behavior of healthcare providers, organizational structure, and cross-sectoral leadership challenges. Challenges associated with WHO stewardship task 3, about the use of collective intelligence, explored stakeholder collaboration, information for decision-making, and challenges within the elderly information system, covering data documentation, reporting, analysis, accessibility, distribution, and circulation. Subsequently, a framework was developed, covering areas like defining the vision and direction of health policy, managing information systems, evidence-informed policymaking, and delivering elderly health services with a holistic approach. Conclusion: The present framework shows how a management information system, guided by evidenced-informed policymaking and the formulation of customized health policies, can facilitate the provision of elderly health services based on identified needs. It presents a governance and stewardship pathway that can be adopted by Iranian health policymakers and similar middle-income countries facing analogous challenges in ageing and aged care system stewardship, serving as a model for developing their own frameworks.

Background and Aims: Continuous routine care is necessary to prevent long-term complications of chronic diseases and improve patients' health conditions. This review study was conducted to determine the factors disrupting continuity of care for patients with chronic diseases during the pandemic. Methods: All original articles published on factors disrupting continuity of care for patients with chronic disease during a pandemic between December 2019 and June 28, 2023, in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest databases were searched. Selection of articles, data extraction, and qualitative evaluation of articles (through STROBE and COREQ checklist) were done by two researchers separately. Data graphing form was used to extract the data of each study and then the data were classified by thematic analysis method. Results: Out of 1708 articles reviewed from the databases, 22 were included. The factors disrupting the continuity of care for patients with chronic diseases during the epidemics were classified into two main categories: patient-side factors and health system-side factors. Patient-side factors including psychological, individual and social, disease-related, and health system-side factors including provider access, health system institutional, and infrastructural and financial problems were among the subcategories disrupting the continuity of care for patients with chronic diseases during the pandemic. Based on the studies, psychological factors and access to the provider were among the most frequent factors affecting the continuity of care for patients with chronic diseases in the pandemic. Conclusion: Considering the factors disrupting the continuity of care and applying appropriate interventions based on them, can guarantee the continuity of providing services to chronic patients in health crises.

Background: As the second leading cause of death in women in the world, breast cancer has several physical and psychological effects. Nowadays, nonclinical approaches such as patient empowerment have been considered by physicians along with clinical care. Given the increasing number of breast cancer women worldwide, promoting the empowerment of these patients is one of the key factors affecting their survival and quality of life. Therefore, because of no comprehensive research on the empowerment needs and related improvement strategies, this study is aimed at determining the empowerment status of breast cancer patients referred to the Shahid Motahari Breast Cancer Clinic in Iran, Shiraz, and at providing strategies to improve their empowerment in 2021. Methods: This applied study was conducted in two phases. In the quantitative phase, 310 Cancer-Related Patient Empowerment Scale questionnaires (Persian format) were distributed among the studied patients selected through the random sampling method in the clinic, and the items with "unacceptable status" became the basis for determining the empowerment strategies through the scoping review and semistructured interviews with 22 medical staff and patients through the thematic analysis. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 20.0 and MAXQDA10 software. Results: The mean score of the participants' empowerment strategies was 3.58. The results showed that trust in the physician, family support, and spiritual beliefs could affect the empowerment of the studied patients. Moreover, the participants needed empowerment strategies in 11 scale items with unacceptable status, for which 46 strategies were determined in the scoping review and interview phase. Conclusion: The results of this study provided useful strategies for empowering breast cancer patients, the most important of which were classified into five categories of financial support, informational support, interaction with the physician, occupational support, and complementary therapies, the use of which by the stakeholders could help to improve the patients' quality of life while improving their empowerment.

The paramount concern of highly accurate energy-efficient computing in machines with significant cognitive capabilities aims to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of bio-inspired Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). This paper addresses this main objective by introducing a novel spatial power spike-timing-dependent plasticity (Spatial-Pow-STDP) learning rule as a digital block with high accuracy in a bio-inspired SNN model. Motivated by the demand for precise and accelerated computation that reduces high-cost resources in neural network applications, this paper presents a methodology based on COordinate Rotation DIgital Computer (CORDIC) definitions. The proposed designs of CORDIC algorithms for exponential (Exp CORDIC), natural logarithm (Ln CORDIC), and arbitrary power function (Pow CORDIC) are meticulously detailed and evaluated to ensure optimal acceleration and accuracy, which respectively show average errors near 10-9, 10-6, and 10-5 with 4, 4, and 6 iterations. The engineered architectures for the Exp, Ln, and Pow CORDIC implementations are illustrated and assessed, showcasing the efficiency achieved through high frequency, leading to the introduction of a Spatial-Pow-STDP learning block design based on Pow CORDIC that facilitates efficient and accurate hardware computation with 6.93 × 10-3 average error with 9 iterations. The proposed learning mechanism integrates this structure into a large-scale spatiotemporal SNN consisting of three layers with reduced hyper-parameters, enabling unsupervised training in an event-based paradigm using excitatory and inhibitory synapses. As a result, the application of the developed methodology and equations in the computational SNN model for image classification reveals superior accuracy and convergence speed compared to existing spiking networks by achieving up to 97.5%, 97.6%, 93.4%, and 93% accuracy, respectively, when trained on the MNIST, EMNIST digits, EMNIST letters, and CIFAR10 datasets with 6, 2, 2, and 6 training epochs.

Cancer is characterized by the abnormal and uncontrollable division and growth of cells that can infiltrate tissues and alter normal physiological function, which will become crucial and life-threatening if left untreated. Cancer can be a result of genetics, such as mutations or environmental causes, including smoking, lack of physical activity, as well as nutritional imbalance in the body. Vitamin D is one of the foremost nutrients that play a crucial role in a variety of biochemical pathways, and it is an important key factor in several diseases. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for preventing malignancies and a complementary treatment for cancer through direct and indirect biochemical pathways. In this article, we summarized the correlation between vitamin D and various cancers using an extensive search on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. This paper reviews the role of vitamin D in different types of cancer.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to evaluate muscles with more prominent needle electromyographic findings to optimize needle electromyography screening of isolated C6 radiculopathy in patients with C6 root lesions. DESIGN: This prospective clinical study was performed on 39 patients with isolated and unilateral cervical radiculopathy selected from all referrals of 1733 patients to the electrodiagnosis unit of the physical medicine and rehabilitation department of a tertiary medical center (from April 2021 to December 2021). The presence of fibrillation potentials, positive sharp waves, and/or neurogenic motor action potentials that occurred in isolation or combination with selected muscles was considered an abnormal finding. RESULTS: Of 1733 referrals, 39 patients (18 males [46.1%] and 21 females [53.8%]), with a mean age of 49.7 ± 9.6 yrs, were found eligible. According to needle electromyography findings, the most involved muscles in C6 root lesion were pronator teres (100%), followed by extensor carpi radialis longus (94.8%), flexor carpi radialis (89.7%), brachioradialis (82%), infraspinatus (82%), supraspinatus (79.4%), deltoid (74.3%), biceps brachii (64.1%), extensor digitorum communis (33.3%), and triceps brachii (15.3%) muscles. CONCLUSIONS: The pronator teres is the most involved muscle of patients diagnosed with C6 radiculopathy. It might be considered the key muscle for screening and accurate diagnosis of C6 root involvement.

Soil salinity is one of the increasing problems in agricultural fields in many parts of the world, adversely affecting the performance and health of the plants. As a pleiotropic signal and antioxidant molecule in both animals and plants, melatonin has been reported to possess significant roles in combating with stress factors, in general and salt stress, in particular. In this study, the interactive effects of melatonin (0, 75, and 150 µM) and salt stress (0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl) were investigated by assaying the some agronomic, physlogical and biochemical attributes and essential oil compounds of bitter melon (Momordica charantia). The results showed that exogenous melatonin could promote net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and PSII efficiency (Fv/Fm), increase K+ content and activity of antioxidant enzymes and decrease reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde and Na+ content in stress-submitted seedlings, in comparison to the non-stressed seedlings (p < 0.05). Melatonin increased content of essential oils. Concerning the major compounds of fruits of bitter melon, charantin, momordicin and cucurbitacin were increased with the melatonin treatments, whereas they were critically decreased with the salt stress. In addition, melatonin increased the antioxidant capacity in fruits under non-saline and salinity conditions. Amid the concentrations of melatonin, plants treated with 150 µM of melatonin under either non-saline or saline conditions showed better performance and productivity. Therefore, application of 150 µM melatonin resulted in a significant improvement of salinity tolerance and essential oil compounds in bitter melon plant, suggesting this as an efficient 'green' strategy for sustainable crop production under salt stress conditions.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation therapy on the respiratory function and laboratory parameters in COVID-19 participants with respiratory involvement. Methods: A randomized, double-blind controlled design was used. This study was conducted at Koosar Hospital. Thirty participants with COVID-19 who were hospitalized met the inclusion criteria and were randomly assigned to two groups. Patients were treated with a program of five sessions of high-power photobiomodulation (intervention group) and placebo photobiomodulation (control group). Both groups received standard treatment. Outcomes were assessed before and after the intervention (two sessions), according to the immune system function and laboratory tests for the respiratory rate (RR), oxygen saturation, and inflammatory factors, including C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cells, and interleukin-6 (IL-6), as well as complete blood count (CBC), hematocrit, hemoglobin, and ferritin. Results: Findings indicated that the values of ferritin, erythrocyte sedimentation ratio, CRP, IL-6, O2 saturation, and RR were significantly improved after the intervention in both groups (p < 0.05). Independent T-test analyses also indicated significant differences in the CRP, IL-6, and O2 saturation in the photobiomodulation group compared with the control group after the five-session intervention (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Application of photobiomodulation is recommended for treatment of respiratory problems in patients with COVID-19 to improve clinical signs and control inflammatory factors. BACKGROUND: In today's digital world, providing services through telemedicine has become an essential issue in health systems, and the Covid-19 pandemic has made this necessity even more apparent. On the other hand, mental health services are needed more than ever, and their nature makes their delivery via telemedicine more feasible than other specialized services. This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the acceptance of telemedicine among users of this technology in the field of mental health. METHODS: This article is a scoping review based on the PRISMA guidelines and without any time limit until June 20, 2022. The search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PsycINFO databases using keywords related to the three fields of telemedicine, acceptance, and mental disorders. Two authors independently selected the studies based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Then the data were collected using a data extraction form, and finally, the results were determined using the content analysis method. RESULTS: Five main factors affect the acceptance of telemedicine among users of this technology in the field of mental health: perceived effectiveness, users' understanding of the effects of telemedicine on the quality and outcomes of care delivery, technological aspects, organizational change capacity, the nature of the disease and psychological and psychosocial factors. These main factors are associated with 21 related sub-factors. CONCLUSIONS: Revealing the factors affecting the acceptance of telemedicine among recipients and providers of services, as key actors in health systems, can help managers and policymakers to successfully implement telemedicine in the less-regarded field of mental health, especially in the early stages.

BACKGROUND: The demographic structure of Iran as a developing country has undergone various changes in recent years. Therefore, the present study sought to analyze policy and upstream documents related to the older people health in Iran in order to identify and analyze the requirements considered by health policymakers to promote the older people health in Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a qualitative study conducted in 2021 through national qualitative document analysis. All upstream documents published and related to older people health were reviewed between February 1979 and October 2021. The Scott's four-step method was used to extract the related documents. RESULTS: Policy requirements for promoting older people healthcare in Iran were categorized into 4 main themes in the form of a conceptual framework and 15 sub-themes. Thus, in order to ensure the health of the older people in Iran, it is necessary to take into account the four categories of managerial requirements, financing, infrastructures, and providing older people services. In other words, the sustainable financing requirements and the infrastructural requirements should firstly exist together as basic requirements. Then, geriatric health management requirements are needed to provide the older people health services along with the previous requirements and finally ensure the health of the older people in Iran. CONCLUSION: The results of this study can be helpful in the review of upstream older people health policy documents by policy makers in order to better promote the health of the older people and pave the way for new policies to enter the agenda of policy makers.

Population-related policies are among macro-strategic policies considered by all governments in the world. To achieve the desired population structure, it is first necessary to identify the general policy approach over time. This article aims to identify the main requirements of population policies during the last 70 years in Iran. This is a qualitative content analysis study conducted via the analysis of all relevant national policy documents from 1951 to 2022. To retrieve the relevant documents, we searched the official website of eight policymaking bodies in Iran. After identifying the documents, their eligibility was evaluated using Scott's method, and as a result, 40 documents were selected for analysis. Finally, we used a qualitative content analysis to synthesize the data using MAXQDA version 10. The findings showed that the political requirements for population reduction can be classified into four main themes of "Religious, scientific, and legal infrastructure", "Changes in the rules", "Institution building, programming and division of tasks", and "Information and service provision", with 11 sub-themes. Furthermore, the political requirements for an increasing population can be divided into six main themes of "Education & acculturation", "Legal dos, and don'ts", "Financial and non-financial support for families", "Structural and information infrastructure", "Health services", and "Stewardship", with 30 sub-themes. In this study, by an all-round look, and the analysis of policies of the last 70 years of Iran, it was determined how the population policies originate from the political-cultural background of society, and provide the ground for the changes in the cultural-social, political, and economic structures and as a result demographic change. In other words, the main requirements to formulate the population increase and decrease policies in Iran as a country with golden experiences to implement the population policies were shown; which can be helpful as a guide to formulate the population policies in Iran and provide a model for successful policy making in the countries with a similar background to Iran.

BACKGROUND: Any disruption in continuity of care for patients with chronic conditions can lead to poor outcomes for the patients as well as great damage for the community and the health system. This study aims to determine the continuity of care for patients with chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes during COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Through a cross-sectional retrospective study, data registered in six health centers in Yazd, Iran were analyzed. Data included the number of patients with chronic conditions (hypertension and diabetes) and average daily admission during a year before COVID-19 pandemic and the similar period after COVID-19 outbreak. The experience of continuity of care was assessed applying a validated questionnaire from a sample of 198 patients. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics, independent T-Test and Multivariable regression were used for analysis. FINDINGS: Results indicate that both visit load of the patients with chronic conditions (hypertension and diabetes) and their average daily admission were decreased significantly during a year after COVID-19 pandemic compared to the similar period before COVID-19 outbreak. The moderate average score of the patients` experience towards continuity of care during the pandemic was also reported. Regression analysis showed that age for the diabetes patients and insurance status for the hypertension patients affect the COC mean scores. CONCLUSION: COVID-19 pandemic causes serious decline in the continuity of care for patients with chronic conditions. Such a deterioration not only can lead to make these patients` condition worse in a long-term period but also it can make irreparable damages to the whole community and the health system. To make the health systems resilient particularly in disasters, serious attention should be taken into consideration among them, developing the tele-health technologies, improving the primary health care capacity, designing the applied responsive models of continuity of care, making multilateral participations and inter-sectoral collaborations, allocating sustainable resources, and enabling the patients with selfcare skills are more highlighted.

Successful in-vitro production of bovine embryos relies on meiotic maturation of oocytes in vitro (IVM) before they can be fertilised. High levels of IVM are currently achieved using a complex medium that contains all 20 common amino acids, namely TCM199, but can also be achieved using a simple inorganic salt solution containing non-essential amino acids, proline, and glutamine. Further simplification of the amino acid content of medium used for IVM could lead to a more defined medium that provides reproducible IVM. The aim of this study was, therefore, to determine the minimal amino acid requirements for bovine oocyte nuclear maturation, as measured by progression to metaphase II (MII) of meiosis. Supplementation of a simple medium composed of inorganic salts (M1 medium) with multiple amino-acid combinations showed that M1 containing glutamine, proline, and isoleucine resulted in nuclear maturation comparable to that of TCM199 (57.4 ± 3.4% vs 67% ± 1.7%, respectively) but was reduced when cystine (Cys2) to that seen with M1 alone (38.0 ± 2.2%). Viability of oocytes matured in this simplified medium was equal to those matured in TCM199 since the same proportion of zygotes with 2 pronuclei were observed following fertilisation in medium containing no amino acids (33.9 ± 6.5% vs 33.3 ± 3.6%, respectively). Addition of glutamine, proline and isoleucine to fertilisation medium also increased the proportion of zygotes but did not increase blastocyst development rates. Thus, a defined medium containing only glutamine, proline and isoleucine is sufficient for oocyte maturation and successful fertilisation.

BACKGROUND: Older people's health policies suffer from many challenges in Iran. The issue is more highlighted considering the increasing rate of the older population in the country. This study aimed to explore the challenges of older people's health policies in Iran as well as make an avenue for policy responses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a qualitative study that was conducted using conventional content analysis in 2020-2021 in Iran. The purposive and snowball sampling methods were used for semi-structured interviews with 30 selected participants. Data were analyzed through the content analysis approach using Granheim and Landman's five-step thematic method. RESULTS: The results of analyzing the data were categorized into four main themes, 16 sub-themes, and 70 final codes. The main themes were executive, policymaking, intra- and inter-sectoral, and environmental challenges. CONCLUSIONS: Older people are facing challenges in receiving appropriate and timely care. In order to achieve a wide national policy dialogue for covering all older people's health needs in policy agendas and better formulation and implementation of the policies, it is necessary for Iranian health policymakers to address executive challenges and apply effective strategies.

Organoid technology has provided unique insights into human organ development, function, and diseases. Patient-derived organoids are increasingly used for drug screening, modeling rare disorders, designing regenerative therapies, and understanding disease pathogenesis. However, the use of Matrigel to grow organoids represents a major challenge in the clinical translation of organoid technology. Matrigel is a poorly defined mixture of extracellular matrix proteins and growth factors extracted from the Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm mouse tumor. The extracellular matrix is a major driver of multiple cellular processes and differs significantly between tissues as well as in healthy and disease states of the same tissue. Therefore, we envisioned that the extracellular matrix derived from a native healthy tissue would be able to support organoid growth akin to organogenesis in vivo. Here, we have developed hydrogels from decellularized human and bovine endometrium. These hydrogels supported the growth of mouse and human endometrial organoids, which was comparable to Matrigel. Organoids grown in endometrial hydrogels were proteomically more similar to the native tissue than those cultured in Matrigel. Proteomic and Raman microspectroscopy analyses showed that the method of decellularization affects the biochemical composition of hydrogels and, subsequently, their ability to support organoid growth. The amount of laminin in hydrogels correlated with the number and shape of organoids. We also demonstrated the utility of endometrial hydrogels in developing solid scaffolds for supporting high-throughput, cell culture-based applications. In summary, endometrial hydrogels overcome a major limitation of organoid technology and greatly expand the applicability of organoids to understand endometrial biology and associated pathologies.

In the new era, many people seek their health-related information through the Internet due to the increasing access to this technology. Searching online health information can affect the health behavior. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between online health information-seeking behavior and a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy in a sample of Iranian pregnant women. This cross-sectional study was conducted among pregnant women admitted to health centers of Eghlid city, Fars province, Iran in 2019. A total of 193 women participated in the study. The required data were gathered using two validated questionnaires to measure the online health information-seeking behavior and the healthy lifestyle practices of the participants. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient using SPSS version 22. Online health information experience and its subscales showed no statistical correlation with a healthy lifestyle. Age and education did not correlate with online health information-seeking behavior. Age had a statistical correlation with a healthy lifestyle, but education had the same correlation only with some subscales of a healthy lifestyle. The findings were surprising, suggesting that online health information-seeking behavior does not affect the lifestyle of pregnant women. These finding and probable explanations are discussed, but due to the limited literature on the subject, further studies are recommended to be conducted.

BACKGROUND: Melatonin is a multi-functional molecule widely employed in order to mitigate abiotic stress factors, in general and salt stress in particular. Even though previous reports revealed that melatonin could exhibit roles in promoting seed germination and protecting plants during various developmental stages of several plant species under salt stress, no reports are available with respect to the regulatory acts of melatonin on the physiological and biochemical status as well as the expression levels of defense- and secondary metabolism-related related transcripts in bitter melon subjected to the salt stress. RESULTS: Herewith the present study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the physiological and ion balance, antioxidant system, as well as transcript analysis of defense-related genes (WRKY1, SOS1, PM H+-ATPase, SKOR, Mc5PTase7, and SOAR1) and secondary metabolism-related gene expression (MAP30, α-MMC, polypeptide-P, and PAL) in salt-stressed bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) plants in response to melatonin treatment. In this regard, different levels of melatonin (0, 75 and 150 µM) were applied to mitigate salinity stress (0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl) in bitter melon. Accordingly, present findings revealed that 100 mM salinity stress decreased growth and photosynthesis parameters (SPAD, Fv/Fo, Y(II)), RWC, and some nutrient elements (K+, Ca2+, and P), while it increased Y(NO), Y(NPQ), proline, Na+, Cl-, H2O2, MDA, antioxidant enzyme activity, and lead to the induction of the examined genes. However, prsiming with 150 µM melatonin increased SPAD, Fv/Fo, Y(II)), RWC, and K+, Ca2+, and P concentration while decreased Y(NO), Y(NPQ), Na+, Cl-, H2O2, and MDA under salt stress. In addition, the antioxidant system and gene expression levels were increased by melatonin (150 µM). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, it can be postulated that the application of melatonin (150 µM) has effective roles in alleviating the adverse impacts of salinity through critical modifications in plant metabolism.
