RESUMO

This review aimed at a systematic evaluation of the available literature on the effect of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in accelerating canine distal movement (CD). An elaborate search of the available literature on the effect of PRF on the acceleration of canine distal movement was conducted using appropriate search terms in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Central, and Google Scholar until April 2024. The risk of bias within the studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias (RoB)-2 tool. Publication bias was assessed with a funnel plot, and a random effects model was used for quantitative synthesis. The certainty of the available evidence was assessed with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Following the systematic search, a total of 11 studies were included for the qualitative analysis, and three studies were included for quantitative synthesis. Most of the studies reported an increased rate of canine distal movement following administration of PRF. The overall pooled CD at one, two, three, four, and five months showed a significantly increased mean CD in i-PRF (p<0.00001; MD = 0.23; 95% CI: 0.14 to 0.32), and a significantly increased rate of CD was noted during the first and second months. The available studies had a moderate to low risk of bias and a moderate certainty of evidence. Hence, with a moderate certainty of evidence and a risk of bias, it can be concluded that PRF accelerates orthodontic tooth movement during the first two months.

RESUMO

Objective: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) represents about 90% of all oral malignancies. The study aimed to assess the involvement of the submandibular salivary gland (SMG) in oral SCC (OSCC) patients and the need for SMG excision. Materials and Methods: Demographics, clinical information and staging of the 210 patients undergoing surgery for OSCC were obtained from the department records. The histopathological slides were retrospectively reviewed. The nodal status was also verified with the histopathology reports. Frequency distribution, Chi-square association, ordinal logistic regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier analysis were performed. Results: SMG was excised in 171 patients. Five patients had SMG involvement. Buccal mucosa (BM) and gingivobuccal sulcus had a greater risk of level IB metastases (P < 0.01). Pattern 3 and pattern 4 of invasion had a higher risk of level IB metastases (P = 0.04). Depth of invasion (DOI) >4 mm was associated with level IB lymph node (LN) involvement (P = 0.0001). DOI >4 mm to 8 mm had 3.7 times the risk and a DOI >8 mm to 12 mm had 5 times the risk of level IB metastases. Pattern of invasion (POI), tumour budding and DOI >4 mm were significant prognosticators for patient survival. Conclusion: Histologically, patients may be categorised as 'high risk': those with an increased risk of level IB LN involvement and 'low risk': those at low risk for level IB involvement with the help of POI, tumour budding and DOI as risk factors. In low-risk patients, SMG may be spared and the level IB LNs are dissected. High-risk patients may be chosen as candidates for SMG transfer or excision based on the extent of LN involvement.

RESUMO

This review aims to collate and analyze the existing evidence on the comparison of external apical root resorption (EARR) in subjects treated with clear aligners (CAs) and fixed appliances (FA). An electronic search was conducted in six databases for articles published in all languages until July 2023. Studies that evaluated EARR in subjects treated with CAs and FAs were included. The RoB 2 tool for RCTs and the ROBINS-I tool for non-randomized studies were used to analyze the risk of bias (ROB). A random effects meta-analysis was performed to assess EARR extent in maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth for subjects treated with CAs and FAs. Ten studies (eight retrospective, one RCT, and one CCT) were included in this review, out of which six studies reported a moderate ROB, one reported a serious ROB, and three reported a low ROB on qualitative analysis. The quantitative analysis of six studies revealed a significant intergroup difference (P<0.05) in the mean EARR for maxillary central (SMD=-0.62, P<0.00001) and lateral incisors (SMD=-0.47, P=0.01) with a moderate heterogeneity (I2=56%), as well as the mandibular central incisors (SMD=-0.27, P=0.04) with high heterogeneity (I2=79%). EARR was lower in subjects treated with CAs than FAs. A moderate quality of the available evidence suggests that EARR was less evident in subjects treated with CAs when compared with FAs.

RESUMO

Background: Kanikkaran are semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting Mundandhurai hills in Tamil Nadu. Their traditional method of maintaining oral health, seclusion, ignorance, and limited access to dental resources has led to their poor oral health situation. Thus, the present study is designed to assess the oral health status of the Kanikkaran tribals residing in Mundandhurai Hill of Tirunelveli district. Methods: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted among 907 Kanikkaran tribes in Mundandhurai hills. Mundandhurai Hills in Ambasamudram taluk of Tirunelveli district was selected by convenience method. World Health Organization (WHO) oral health assessment form and its self-oral health assessment form (2013) were used. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed using SPSS version 23.0. Result: There is a significant negative moderate correlation between age and dental caries (r = -0.752). There is a significantly high risk among tribes with the primary school of education and agriculture as an occupation for periodontal disease (OR = 3.48), premalignant lesion (OR = 2.52), and non-carious dental lesions (OR = 3.14). Males with primary school education and agriculture as occupation had a significantly higher consumption of sugar and use of tobacco (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Primary school of education with agriculture/labor as occupation had a high prevalence of DMFT, periodontitis, premalignant, and non-carious dental lesions. The results of the present study punctuate the necessity of raising awareness of the significance of good oral health through education and implementation of necessary dental services in Kanikkaran tribes.

RESUMO

Aim To evaluate the oral health status, self-assessment of oral health, and oral health risks among tribes in Tamil Nadu, India. Materials and methods An epidemiological cross-sectional study was carried out among 880 tribals comprising Irulars and Narikuravars. A multistage random sampling method was carried out to select villages from the Vellore district, Tamil Nadu. A World Health Organization (WHO) oral health assessment form, self-oral health assessment form (2013), was administered to collect details regarding the oral health status, self-assessment of oral health, and risks. Descriptive and analytical statistics were performed. Results Out of the total study population, 76.4% (n=672) were Irulars and 23.6% (208) were Narikuravars. The decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) score of the total study population ranged from 0 to 16 and the mean DMFT score of the total population was 5.60 ± 3.416. The mean DMFT score was higher in Irulars (6.58±3.992) than in Narikuravars (5.30±3.160). On assessing the periodontal status, a significant difference (p<0.05) has been observed between the subgroups of age, sex, ethnicity, and education. The prevalence of Leukoplakia and Tobacco Pouch Keratosis in the total study population was 3.3% and 1.6% respectively. Conclusion The oral health status of Irulars was poorer than that of Narikuravars. This study highlights the requirement of raising awareness about the significance of oral health and strategically implementing necessary dental care in tribal people living in this region of Tamil Nadu.

RESUMO

Oral health professionals in the dental office settings have a distinctive opportunity to increase tobacco abstinence rates among tobacco users as tobacco use has significant adverse effects on oral health. This review assesses the effectiveness of tobacco cessation interventions offered to cigarette smokers and smokeless tobacco users in the dental office setting. The following electronic retrieval systems and databases were searched for the identification of studies, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PUBMED, GOOGLE SCHOLAR, SCIENCE DIRECT and TRIP. The review included randomized clinical trials assessing tobacco cessation interventions conducted by oral health professionals in the dental office setting. Seven clinical trials met the criteria for inclusion in this review. All the studies have employed behavioral therapy, telephonic counseling's and pharmacotherapy as interventional component. The rate of abstinence and biochemical validation were the outcome measurements. Since all the studies included were randomized clinical trials, the level of evidence was II. Available evidence suggests that telephonic interventions for tobacco use conducted by oral health professionals in the dental office setting may increase tobacco abstinence rates among smokers and smokeless tobacco users. This review data suggests that telephone has a pragmatic effect on interactional aspects of psychological therapy. Further research should be carried out to make conclusive recommendations regarding the intervention components that can be incorporated in the dental office settings.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Anterior-posterior discrepancy assessment is a crucial component of orthodontic diagnosis and is often carried out using hard tissue cephalometric analysis. The purpose of this study was to compare the photographic Frankfort plane subnasale pogonion (FSA) angle with established cephalometric parameters to determine the accuracy of the angle in determining maxillomandibular anteroposterior discrepancies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, a total of 60 subjects, 20 in each skeletal sagittal malocclusion, were included in the final sample based on the selection criteria. Both photographic and cephalometric records were taken, and the parameters assessed were the beta angle, Steiner's analysis, the ANB (A point- Nasion- B point) angle in the cephalograms, and the FSA angle in the profile photographs. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS software. The correlation between the measured parameters was assessed using Pearson's correlation test. RESULTS: A high positive and significant correlation between the FSA angle and beta angle (r = 0.793) was noted, and a high negative and significant correlation between the FSA angle and ANB angle (r = -0.848) was noted. CONCLUSION: The photographic FSA angle can be used as a reliable parameter to diagnose anteroposterior discrepancies.

RESUMO

Objective: The objective of this review is to systematically analyze the available literature on the effects of titanium oxide (TiO2) coating on the antimicrobial properties, surface characteristics, and cytotoxicity of orthodontic brackets. Methods: In-vitro studies reporting on the effects of Titanium oxide (TiO2) coatings on antimicrobial properties, surface roughness, cytotoxic activity and bacterial adhesion of orthodontic brackets were included in the review. Electronic databases such as PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science and Google Scholar, were searched till September 2022. Risk of Bias was analyzed by using RoBDEMAT tool. Meta-analysis using Random Effects Model was performed for assessing the antimicrobial activity against S. mutans, C. albicans and L. Acidophilus. Results: A total of 11 studies were included the RoB analysis revealed sufficient reporting across all the domains and inconsistent reporting in only two of the domains. On qualitative analysis, a significant antimicrobial effect of TiO2 coating on orthodontic brackets against Streptococcus mutans, Candida albicans and Lactobacillus acidophilus was reported. The meta analysis revealed a significant overall antimicrobial effect with a high heterogeneity. (SMD: 3.5; p < 0.00001; i2 - 99.2%). Conclusion: An overall significant antimicrobial effect of TiO2 coated brackets against S. mutans, L. Acidophilus, C. Albicans was noted but with a high heterogeneity. The subgroup analysis revealed a significant antimicrobial effect on C albicans with a low heterogeneity but it was limited by a publication bias. The included studies reported reduced surface roughness, minimal bacterial adhesion and less cytotoxic activity with TiO2 coated brackets than uncoated brackets.

RESUMO

Background: Dentists play an important role in caries prevention by delivering preventive care, educating patients, and buying related products; it is critical to recognize what they know and believe about caries prevention, as well as how they use caries prevention interventions. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in South India between January 2021 and February 2021 to determine the dentists' knowledge, attitude, and practice of prescribing preventive strategies and remineralizing agents for caries prevention. A questionnaire including 11 self-administered, prestructured questions was made and distributed through electronic media. Chi-square test was done. The test significance value was taken as 0.05. Results: A total of 252 dental practitioners participated in the study. The majority of general dentists and specialists followed all the measures such as pit and fissure sealants, fluoride application, counseling patients about oral hygiene maintenance, and regular recall after 6 months to 1 year (P > 0.05). Fluoridated remineralization strategy was found to be the most prescribed (69%) strategy for caries prevention. A significant number of dentists think fluoridated mineralization strategies will remain prevalent (P < 0.05). Younger dentists find practicing preventive dentistry more feasible compared to dentists with greater years of experience (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Dentists across the country are well aware, have sufficient knowledge, and prescribe preventive strategies such as fluoride application, pit and fissure sealants, regular oral health checkups, and counsel the patients about the importance of oral health but there is a lack of implementation of these preventive strategies in everyday practice.

RESUMO

A dental implant mimics the tooth and restores its function. It has flourished as a replacement of missing natural teeth that has a success rate over 90% over the years. However, this root-form implant has also been associated with some complications after its application. Crestal bone loss, one of the biggest challenges in dental implant placement, occurs around the dental implant neck within a few months post-loading. The aim of this study was to determine survival rates and to measure crestal bone changes after placement of a single crown prosthesis. Data collection was done in a private dental university setting. Data from approximately 296 cases were retrieved after analyzing 86,000 case sheets. The following parameters were evaluated based on dental records: age, sex, implant placement area, implant diameter and length, and presence or absence of exudate. Crestal bone loss was assessed radiographically. Excel tabulation and SPSS version 23 were used for data analysis. Chi-square testing was done to correlate various parameters used in this study. Incipient crestal bone loss was commonly observed. It was seen that the association between crestal bone loss and exudate was statistically significant (Chi-square, p < 0.05). Within the limits of this study, incipient crestal bone loss was observed in most dental implants irrespective of bone density, implant length, implant diameter, and implant placement area.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of adhesive strategy (total etch or self-etch) of universal adhesives in non-carious cervical lesions. DATA SOURCE: A search was made in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Web Of Science, Open Gray, Clinical Registries. DATA SELECTION: Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials, studies on non-carious cervical lesions restored using Universal Adhesives, and studies in which universal adhesives have been used in total etch and self -etch strategies were included in this systematic review. DATA EXTRACTION: A total of 17 articles were included in the systematic review and 13 in the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis was conducted to assess the clinical performance of NCCLs in terms of retention, marginal adaptation, marginal discoloration, secondary caries and post-operative sensitivity at 18, 24, 36 month follow-up using USPHS as well as FDI criteria, separately. DATA SYNTHESIS: Overall there was no significant difference between total etch and self etch adhesive strategies for any of the five outcome measures using either the FDI or the USPHS criteria. p > 0.05, 95% CI, I2 value of 0%. A strongly suspected publication bias in the retention domain was seen at 18 month follow up under FDI criteria. CONCLUSION: Most universal adhesives show acceptable clinical performance. There is no significant effect of the adhesive strategy of universal adhesives on their clinical performance according to the results of our meta-analysis.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Sodium hypochlorite, a gold standard for irrigation in endodontics, has disadvantages like toxicity and root dentin weakening. Alternatives derived from natural products are being explored. AIMS: This systematic review was done to understand the clinical benefits of natural irrigants when compared with a standard irrigant, sodium hypochlorite. SETTINGS AND DESIGN REGISTRATION: This systematic review was registered with PROSPERO (2018 CRD42018112837) METHODS AND MATERIAL: This review was done in conformation to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA 2020) statement. In vivo studies using at least one natural irrigant and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) were included. Studies using them as medicaments were excluded. PubMed, Cochrane and SCOPUS were searched. RevMan tool for Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2) and risk-of-bias tool to assess non-randomized studies of interventions (ROBINS-I) were used. GRADEpro was used to assess certainty of evidence. RESULTS: Ten articles (6 RCTs and 4 clinical studies) on approximately 442 patients were included. Seven natural irrigants were evaluated clinically. Due to the heterogeneity, meta-analysis could not be conducted. Antimicrobial efficacy was found to be similar for castor oil, neem, garlic-lemon, noni, papaine and NaOCl. Neem, papaine-chloramine, neem-NaOCl and neem-CHX were superior, while propolis, miswak and garlic were inferior to NaOCl. Post-operative pain was less for neem. There was no significant difference between papaine-chloramine, garlic extract and sodium hypochlorite in clinical/radiographic success. CONCLUSIONS: The studied natural irrigants are not more efficacious than NaOCl. At the moment, they cannot replace NaOCl routinely and may only substitute in select cases.

RESUMO

The present systematic review was done to assess the available literatures on changes in the number of occlusal contacts (NOC), occlusal contact surface areas, and occlusal force distribution (OFD) with vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs) or clear overlay retainers during retention and to compare them with other retainers. Six electronic databases (Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Lilacs, and Google Scholar) were searched. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and controlled clinical trials (CCTs) reporting on occlusal contact changes with VFRs were included. A total of nine articles were included in this review: three RCTs, five prospective controlled trials (PCTs), and one CCT. The Cochrane risk of bias tool and ROBINS-I tool were used for risk of bias assessment. The three RCTs showed moderate risk of bias, and out of five CCTs, four showed low risk of bias, and one showed moderate risk of bias. One CCT showed a low risk of bias in the ROBINS-I tool. Two out of four studies reported improved occlusal surface area (OSA) with VFRs when assessed at the end of six months and 12 months; one out of four studies reported improved NOC; and one study reported a decrease in OFD anteriorly and an increase in OFD posteriorly after two months of retention. On comparison between the groups, the other retainer groups showed more NOCs compared to VFRs. The limited available evidence suggests an increase in OSA and no change in NOCs and OFD with VFRs during retention. No significant differences between VFRs and other retainers for OSA and OFD were noted, and more NOCs were noted for other retainer groups.

RESUMO

Buccolingual position of teeth could affect the prevalence of alveolar bone defects. Presence of alveolar defects may have a deleterious effect on orthodontic treatment. The aim was to assess the prevalence and extent of dehiscence and fenestration in Class I hyperdivergent subjects and correlate it with buccolingual inclinations(BL) of maxillary first molar teeth. Methods: This retrospective study involved 80 CBCTs of class I hyperdivergent subjects divided into two groups - group A (n=33) buccolingual inclination >9º and group B (n=47) buccolingual inclination <9º. Prevalence and extent of alveolar bone dehiscence and fenestrations were measured in CBCTs using OSIRIX Lite software. Descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U test and Spearman correlation were done for evaluating intergroup differences and correlation with Buccolingual inclination. Results: Overall prevalence of dehiscence and fenestration in maxillary first molars was 60.95% and 5% respectively. In the buccal alveolar bone, prevalence of dehiscence was highest in group A (84.6%) for 16 and in the lingual alveolar bone prevalence of dehiscence was highest in group B (71.4%) for 26 . On intergroup comparison, the extent of lingual alveolar bone dehiscence (26) in group B was significantly higher (p value <0.05) than in group A. No significant correlation between the extent of dehiscence and fenestration with buccolingual inclination of molar teeth was noted. Conclusion: Molar teeth with BL inclinations of more than 9º had higher prevalence of dehiscence on the buccal side and molar teeth with BL inclinations less than 9 degrees had more dehiscence on the lingual side. But no significant correlation of BL inclination with prevalence and extent of dehiscence and fenestration was noted

RESUMO

Purpose To explore the viability of used toothbrush as a source of gene expression and comparison of the same among tobacco, alcohol, diabetic and hypertensive subjects. Materials and methods Fourteen subjects with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension were allocated to Group I, 14 subjects with tobacco and alcohol habits allocated to Group II and 14 healthy subjects allocated to Group III. Genetic materials retrieved from the used toothbrush of the study subjects were assessed for genetic expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4), Bcl-2-like protein 4 (BAX), cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A), B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL2), G-protein beta-3 (GNB3), and subunit gene and transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results BAX gene showed reduced expression in tobacco and alcohol users (p=0.0497). BCL2, CDK4, and GNB3 showed no significant difference in expression in both the groups and with control. CDKN2A was expressed at a lower level in Group I and II participants. TCF7L2 showed higher expression in Group 2 participants (p=0.001). Conclusion The study concluded that used toothbrush is a reliable source for genetic expression. There was no difference in BCL2, CDK4, and GNB3 gene expression between subjects with systemic disease, adverse habits and healthy controls. There is a downregulation of BAX and upregulation of TCF7L2 gene in subjects with adverse habits.

RESUMO

Introduction: Internet gaming disorder and cybervictimization has a disproportionate increase during the COVID 19 pandemic. Teenagers and adolescents have high risk for addiction to online gaming. Online gaming increases the stress level of the users affecting the general and the oral health. The study aims to determine the salivary cortisol and salivary pH among the gaming teenagers. Materials and methods: The cross-sectional study recruited 45 gaming teenagers with the mean age of 15.5 years. The participants were stratified according to the type of online gaming played as mind, aggressive and betting gaming. Their salivary pH and salivary cortisol were assessed. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 23. Results: The mean salivary pH was found to be less among females playing aggressive games (7.11 ± 0.30) and males playing mind games (7.24 ± 0.16). Salivary cortisol level was found to be statistically high in males (6.66 ± 1.33) and females (7.82 ± 0.66) playing aggressive games. The sub-group analysis of salivary pH and cortisol for gender showed a significant difference in the mean salivary cortisol level (p < 0.05) with no difference in the salivary pH (p > 0.05). Based on the number of hours spent in online gaming, there was a significant increase in the mean salivary cortisol level among the participants playing >3 h (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Salivary cortisol is high among individuals playing aggressive games compared to mind and betting games. Also, salivary cortisol is high in females compared to males with no change in salivary pH.

RESUMO

Algae are effective predecessors of nutrient foods and preventive drugs, gaining global attraction in recent years. It exhibits potent antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-glycemic, and cholesterol-lowering properties due to their richness in highly valuable secondary metabolites. Nevertheless, algae produce valuable bioproducts, its application in dentistry is in its primitive stage. This review focuses on the emergence and emerging role of micro/macroalgae as a natural source of therapeutic, preventive, and biocompatible agents in dentistry. Several studies unveiled that Cyanobacteria, Spirulina, and Chlorella species offer high oral antibacterial and antifungal properties compared to gold standard agents. The characteristic of algae to scavenge superoxide and hydroxyl free radicals, fabricate them as an anti-oxidative and anti-cancer agent. Either alone or by synergism with pinnacle therapies they are found to produce promising curative actions against periodontitis by embattling proinflammatory cytokines. Technologies extend the functions of microalgae as a detoxifying agent, potent drug delivery system, and adjunct regenerative material in chronic periodontitis. Its application as thickening, binding, anticariogenic agent in toothpaste, antibacterial agent in mouthwash, and biocompatible agent in dental impression materials remains very primitive. Low-cost and eco-friendly technologies are needed for the production of oral hygiene products using algal biomass.

RESUMO

Purpose: The aim of this review was to systematically analyze the available literature on the correlation between the gray values (GVs) of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and the Hounsfield units (HUs) of computed tomography (CT) for assessing bone mineral density. Materials and Methods: A literature search was carried out in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Scopus, and LILACS for studies published through September 2021. In vitro, in vivo, and animal studies that analyzed the correlations GVs of CBCT and HUs of CT were included in this review. The review was prepared according to the PRISMA checklist for systematic reviews, and the risk of bias was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool. A quantitative analysis was performed using a fixed-effects model. Results: The literature search identified a total of 5,955 studies, of which 14 studies were included for the qualitative analysis and 2 studies for the quantitative analysis. A positive correlation was observed between the GVs of CBCT and HUs of CT. Out of the 14 studies, 100% had low risks of bias for the domains of patient selection, index test, and reference standards, while 95% of studies had a low risk of bias for the domain of flow and timing. The fixed-effects meta-analysis performed for Pearson correlation coefficients between CBCT and CT showed a moderate positive correlation (r=0.669; 95% CI, 0.388 to 0.836; P<0.05). Conclusion: The available evidence showed a positive correlation between the GVs of CBCT and HUs of CT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The novel 2019 COVID-19 spreads by respiratory and aerosols, and this elevates the risk of dentistry during this pandemic. Widespread disease, in a short time, creates stress and has a psychological impact. The aim of this study was planned to assess the stress level of the dentists living or practicing or studying in hot spots which could help to understand mental status among the general dentists during COVID-19 lockdown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted during the period of August 10 to August 25, 2020, on an Internet platform after getting consent from the dentists and practitioners using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Chi-square association was used. Parametric tests such as independent t-tests and one-way ANOVA were also used. In all instances, P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: This study had a total response from 1044 dental students and dentists residing in hot spot zones in Tamil Nadu. Out of them, 68.4% were female and 31.6% were male. 37.9% of the participants were dental practitioners and 32.5% were undergraduate students. There is a significant association between age groups and PSS, work style, and PSS. There is no significant association between gender and PSS and degree and PSS. CONCLUSION: This study shows that levels of distress were higher than expected during the COVID-19 pandemic among the dentists and majority of the respondents have moderate-to-high-stress levels. As the unlock has been started throughout the country, it is the right time to work with the authorities and focus on formulating protocols for disinfection and sterilization and work on treating the patients with exact safety measures for the welfare of the patients.

RESUMO

Purpose To identify the genetic characterization of S mutans strains isolated from the caries-free and caries-active population using arbitrarily primed -polymerase chain reaction (AP-PCR). Materials and methods Thirty-five subjects with a decayed missing and filled teeth (DMFT) score of 0 were allocated to the caries-free group and 35 subjects with a DMFT score greater than four were allocated to the caries-active group and salivary samples were collected. The samples were processed and the colony forming units (CFU) of S mutans were determined for all the samples. About three colonies resembling S mutans from each subject were subjected to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) isolation, a purification process was performed, and DNA was analyzed by AP-PCR. Results Among the 210 isolates from 35 caries-active and 35 caries-free subjects that were analyzed by AP-PCR, 41.9% had a single genotype, 25.8% had two genotypes, 19.4% had three genotypes, 9.7% had four genotypes and 3.2% had more than four genotypes among the caries-free group. Among the caries-active group, 54.3% had a single genotype, 25.7% had two genotypes, 14.3% had three genotypes and 5.7% had four genotypes. Conclusion The study concluded that different genotypic pattern was present in caries-free and caries-active subjects which indicate the occurrence of genetic polymorphism among the S mutans strains. There was no particular genotype of S mutans that was uniquely present in subjects in caries-active and caries-free individuals.
