Background: The aim of this study was to examine depression and anxiety in adolescent girls with dysmenorrhoea in a remote area of western Rajasthan, as well as their quality of life. Methods: The present research employed a cross-sectional descriptive design. A total of 492 girls between the ages of 13 and 19 years were randomly selected from two secondary schools in a remote area of western Rajasthan. The menstrual issues were studied using the semi-structured health performa. The magnitude of dysmenorrhoea was calculated using a ten-point visual analogue scale. The GAD-7 scale was used to measure anxiety, and PHQ-9 was used to measure depression. Results: Depression and anxiety were substantially more prevalent in girls with dysmenorrhoea than in girls without dysmenorrhoea, with an overall prevalence of 29.25% and 37.11%, respectively (p value 0.00). Girls with dysmenorrhoea had an average pain level of 5.14 (SD = 2.45) over the previous three menstrual cycles (p value 0.00). 186 girls (58.62%) suffered moderate pain during dysmenorrhoea. 124 girls (38.99%) reported that dysmenorrhoea interfered with their regular sleep and compelled them to skip class (50.31%) (p value < 0.05). 175 girls (55.03%) reported that dysmenorrhoea had a mild effect on their daily lives, while 88 girls (27.67%) said dysmenorrhoea made them feel stressed (p value < 0.05). Conclusion: A greater prevalence of dysmenorrhoea had a negative impact on mental health. Teenage girls are particularly vulnerable to these mental health problems. It is important to have a tenuous understanding of the menstrual problems associated with disease in adolescent females, especially in rural areas.

Introduction: Anemia is a significant health problem among adolescent girls. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, related factors, and knowledge about anemia among adolescent girls in a remote area of western Rajasthan. Methods: In a rural area of western Rajasthan, a cross-sectional study of 625 adolescent girls aged 11 to 19 years was carried out. Participants completed a questionnaire that included sociodemographic, clinical, and knowledge questions about anemia and its related factors. An HemoCue was used for hemoglobin analysis and anemia diagnosis. Results: Anemia was found in 56.32% (n = 352) of the recruited population, with a mean of 9.92 (SD = 1.40). Mild, moderate, and severe anemia were found in 29.12%, 22.24%, and 4.96% of the participants, respectively. Girls aged 11 to 14 (AOR = 3.63, 95% CI: 1.76-6.38, P value = 0.042) and those with lower socioeconomic status (AOR = 4.37, 95% CI: 1.39-8.25, P value = 0.022) were more likely to have anemia than those of older age and higher socioeconomic status. Anemia was less prevalent in only one child/no siblings (AOR = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.16-0.73, P value = 0.041), and more prevalent in girls having less than 21 days of menstruation cycle (AOR = 5.37, 95% CI: 2.38-9.63, P value = 0.013), and 21 to 25 days of menstruation cycle (AOR = 3.81, 95% CI: 1.27-5.94, P value = 0.027). A total of 39.84% stated that anemia was caused by iron deficiency, followed by improper diet (32.64%). Furthermore, 56.32% agreed that the most common symptoms of anemia were weakness, and 51.36% of girls were told that anemia was treated with iron supplementation and a balanced diet (39.68%). Green leafy vegetables were considered a good source of iron by 56.48%, and 53.28% were educated about anemia by a teacher, followed by books (45.44%) and media (43.36%). Conclusion: The study shows high prevalence of anemia among adolescent females in the remote area of western Rajasthan. To improve girls health, it is necessary to increase their knowledge, attitudes, and practices in this area. Educational intervention and routine health check-up would be excellent ways to accomplish this.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common psychiatric disorder in patients with epilepsy. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and related risk factors for depression among people with epilepsy and their quality of life. METHODS: Hospital-based cross-sectional study was carried out among 352 individuals with epilepsy from April 2020 to September 2020. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants over a specified period. The Beck's Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) was used to measure depression severity, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to assess stress level, the Oslo 3 Social Support Scale (OSSS-3) to assess social support, and the WHOQOL-BREF scale to estimate quality of life (QoL). The statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 20. Logistic regression analysis was done to determine the risk factors for depression. RESULTS: A total of 352 study participants were considered in the study. The prevalence of depression was found to be 41.19%. In the final multivariate analysis, the independent variables that influenced depression were socioeconomic status (OR 2.75, CI 1.21-5.41), frequency of seizures in the previous year (OR 2.17, CI 1.08-5.26), duration of illness (OR 3.49, CI 1.03-7.52), and poor social support (OR 6.37, CI 1.85-9.48) at p-value < 0.05. When compared to patients without depression, the average mean score (SD) in all four domains was lower in physical 39.01 (4.61), psychological 43.93 (8.13), social 52.89 (10.44), and environmental domains 47.14 (6.99) in patients with depression in BREF quality-of-life scale. There was a statistically significant difference in the physical, psychological, and social domains (p-value < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In people with epilepsy, depression was quite common. Patients that were depressed had a lower QoL. Clinicians should pay special attention to people with epilepsy who lack social support, have low socioeconomic status, longer duration of illness, and have more seizure frequency. Qualified clinicians should do early depression-focused screenings for people with epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: There is lack of information on the magnitude of depression among elderly population in India. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of depression among elderly population in India. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO, IndMed, and Google Scholar were searched to identify articles reported community-based prevalence of depression among elderly population using screening tools. This study included the articles published during the years 1997 to 2016. Studies conducted in the special population groups, hospitals, reported only a subcategory of depression, and not specified the screening tool were excluded. Data were extracted from published reports and any missing information was requested from authors. Estimates were pooled using random-effects meta-analyses. Subgroup and sensitivity analysis were performed. The publication bias was evaluated by using Egger's test and visual inspection of the symmetry in funnel plots. RESULTS: Fifty-one studies from 16 States of India were included as 56 datasets, which estimated the prevalence of depression among Indian elderly population as 34.4% (95% CI: 29.3-39.7). In sub-group analysis, the pooled prevalence was higher among females, rural populations, and in the eastern part of the country. Studies using non-probability sampling, and GDS and CES-D screening tool showed higher prevalence. Exclusion of the studies with sample size less than 100 and low-quality studies (score < 5/8) had no effect on the estimate of the prevalence. The studies that excluded dementia before assessment of depression had lower prevalence. CONCLUSION: About one third elderly population of India suffered from depression with female preponderance. The estimates varied with type of study tool, geographic region, sampling methods, and presence of dementia. The pooled estimate should be interpreted with caution as the studies included in this review had varied methodological approach and screening tools.
