RESUMO

The eHealth technologies promote parental care practices for preterm infants. Nonetheless, we should underscore the abundant information and available apps and disparities in these resources' quality, usability, and reliability. This article examines eHealth technologies directed at parents to care for preterm infants. An integrative review was conducted across the principal health databases (Capes, EBSCO, BVS, PubMed, Scholar, and SciELO), selecting works published from 2011 to 2022 in Portuguese and English, focusing on the use of eHealth technologies for the care of preterm infants. We identified 13 articles related to information and communication technologies in strategies for educating and promoting the health of preterm infants and their parents and the importance of evaluating and validating eHealth technologies in maternal and child health promotion. Properly validated eHealth technologies can be crucial in supporting parents in promoting health and providing care for preterm infants after hospital discharge, which, in turn, can drive the evolution of healthcare systems and improve clinical practices.

Isso, por sua vez, tem o potencial de impulsionar a evolução dos sistemas de saúde e a melhoria das práticas clínicas.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus that causes acute, subacute, and chronic human arthritogenic diseases and, in rare instances, can lead to neurological complications and death. Here, we combined epidemiological, virological, histopathological, cytokine, molecular dynamics, metabolomic, proteomic, and genomic analyses to investigate viral and host factors that contribute to chikungunya-associated (CHIK) death. Our results indicate that CHIK deaths are associated with multi-organ infection, central nervous system damage, and elevated serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines compared with survivors. The histopathologic, metabolite, and proteomic signatures of CHIK deaths reveal hemodynamic disorders and dysregulated immune responses. The CHIKV East-Central-South-African lineage infecting our study population causes both fatal and survival cases. Additionally, CHIKV infection impairs the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, as evidenced by an increase in permeability and altered tight junction protein expression. Overall, our findings improve the understanding of CHIK pathophysiology and the causes of fatal infections.

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) infection was classified as a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2022, being transmitted between humans by large respiratory droplets, in contact with skin lesions, fomites, and sexually. Currently, there are no available accessible and simple-to-use diagnostic tests that accurately detect MPXV antigens for decentralized and frequent testing. Here, we report an electrochemical biosensor to detect MPXV antigens in saliva and plasma samples within 15 min using accessible materials. The electrochemical system was manufactured onto a paper substrate engraved by a CO2 laser machine, modified with gold nanostructures (AuNS) and a monoclonal antibody, enabling sensitive detection of A29 viral protein. The diagnostic test is based on the use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and can be run by a miniaturized potentiostat connected to a smartphone. The impedimetric biosensing method presented excellent analytical parameters, enabling the detection of A29 glycoprotein in the concentration ranging from 1 × 10-14 to 1 × 10-7 g mL-1, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.0 × 10-16 g mL-1. Furthermore, it enabled the detection of MPXV antigens in the concentration ranging from 1 × 10-1 to 1 × 104 PFU mL-1, with an LOD of 7.8 × 10-3 PFU mL-1. Importantly, no cross-reactivity was observed when our device was tested in the presence of other poxvirus and nonpoxvirus strains, indicating the adequate selectivity of our nanobiosensor for MPXV detection. Collectively, the nanobiosensor presents high greenness metrics associated with the use of a reproducible and large-scale fabrication method, an accessible and sustainable paper substrate, and a low volume of sample (2.5 µL), which could facilitate frequent testing of MPXV at point-of-care (POC).

Numerous studies have focused on inflammation-related markers to understand COVID-19. In this study, we performed a comparative analysis of spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) protein-specific IgA, total IgG and IgG subclass response in COVID-19 patients and compared this to their disease outcome. We observed that the SARS-CoV-2 infection elicits a robust IgA and IgG response against the N-terminal (N1) and C-terminal (N3) region of the N protein, whereas we failed to detect IgA antibodies and observed a weak IgG response against the disordered linker region (N2) in COVID-19 patients. N and S protein-specific IgG1, IgG2 and IgG3 response was significantly elevated in hospitalized patients with severe disease compared to outpatients with non-severe disease. IgA and total IgG antibody reactivity gradually increased after the first week of symptoms. Magnitude of RBD-ACE2 blocking antibodies identified in a competitive assay and neutralizing antibodies detected by PRNT assay correlated with disease severity. Generally, the IgA and total IgG response between the discharged and deceased COVID-19 patients was similar. However, significant differences in the ratio of IgG subclass antibodies were observed between discharged and deceased patients, especially towards the disordered linker region of the N protein. Overall, SARS-CoV-2 infection is linked to an elevated blood antibody response in severe patients compared to non-severe patients. Monitoring of antigen-specific serological response could be an important tool to accompany disease progression and improve outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an Aedes mosquito-borne virus that has caused large epidemics linked to acute, chronic, and severe clinical outcomes. Currently, Brazil has the highest number of chikungunya cases in the Americas. We aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics and recurrence pattern of chikungunya in Brazil since its introduction in 2013. METHODS: In this epidemiological study, we used CHIKV genomic sequencing data, CHIKV vector information, and aggregate clinical data on chikungunya cases from Brazil. The genomic data comprised 241 Brazilian CHIKV genome sequences from GenBank (n=180) and the 2022 CHIKV outbreak in Ceará state (n=61). The vector data (Breteau index and House index) were obtained from the Brazilian Ministry of Health for all 184 municipalities in Ceará state and 116 municipalities in Tocantins state in 2022. Epidemiological data on laboratory-confirmed cases of chikungunya between 2013 and 2022 were obtained from the Brazilian Ministry of Health and Laboratory of Public Health of Ceará. We assessed the spatiotemporal dynamics of chikungunya in Brazil via time series, mapping, age-sex distribution, cumulative case-fatality, linear correlation, logistic regression, and phylogenetic analyses. FINDINGS: Between March 3, 2013, and June 4, 2022, 253 545 laboratory-confirmed chikungunya cases were reported in 3316 (59·5%) of 5570 municipalities, mainly distributed in seven epidemic waves from 2016 to 2022. To date, Ceará in the northeast has been the most affected state, with 77 418 cases during the two largest epidemic waves in 2016 and 2017 and the third wave in 2022. From 2016 to 2022 in Ceará, the odds of being CHIKV-positive were higher in females than in males (odds ratio 0·87, 95% CI 0·85-0·89, p<0·0001), and the cumulative case-fatality ratio was 1·3 deaths per 1000 cases. Chikungunya recurrences in the states of Ceará, Tocantins (recurrence in 2022), and Pernambuco (recurrence in 2021) were limited to municipalities with few or no previously reported cases in the previous epidemic waves. The recurrence of chikungunya in Ceará in 2022 was associated with a new East-Central-South-African lineage. Population density metrics of the main CHIKV vector in Brazil, Aedes aegypti, were not correlated spatially with locations of chikungunya recurrence in Ceará and Tocantins. INTERPRETATION: Spatial heterogeneity of CHIKV spread and population immunity might explain the recurrence pattern of chikungunya in Brazil. These results can be used to inform public health interventions to prevent future chikungunya epidemic waves in urban settings. Visceral adiposity is a risk factor for severe COVID-19, and a link between adipose tissue infection and disease progression has been proposed. Here we demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 infects human adipose tissue and undergoes productive infection in fat cells. However, susceptibility to infection and the cellular response depends on the anatomical origin of the cells and the viral lineage. Visceral fat cells express more ACE2 and are more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection than their subcutaneous counterparts. SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to inhibition of lipolysis in subcutaneous fat cells, while in visceral fat cells, it results in higher expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Viral load and cellular response are attenuated when visceral fat cells are infected with the SARS-CoV-2 gamma variant. A similar degree of cell death occurs 4-days after SARS-CoV-2 infection, regardless of the cell origin or viral lineage. Hence, SARS-CoV-2 infects human fat cells, replicating and altering cell function and viability in a depot- and viral lineage-dependent fashion.

A SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 variant of concern (VOC) has been associated with increased transmissibility, hospitalization, and mortality. This study aimed to explore the factors associated with B.1.1.7 VOC infection in the context of vaccination. On March 2021, we detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA in nasopharyngeal samples from 14 of 22 individuals vaccinated with a single-dose of ChAdOx1 (outbreak A, n = 26), and 22 of 42 of individuals with two doses of the CoronaVac vaccine (outbreak B, n = 52) for breakthrough infection rates for ChAdOx1 of 63.6% and 52.4% for CoronaVac. The outbreaks were caused by two independent clusters of the B.1.1.7 VOC. The serum of PCR-positive symptomatic SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals had ~1.8-3.4-fold more neutralizing capacity against B.1.1.7 compared to the serum of asymptomatic individuals. These data based on exploratory analysis suggest that the B.1.1.7 variant can infect individuals partially immunized with a single dose of an adenovirus-vectored vaccine or fully immunized with two doses of an inactivated vaccine, although the vaccines were able to reduce the risk of severe disease and death caused by this VOC, even in the elderly.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is mainly transmitted by airborne droplets generated by infected individuals. Since this and many other pathogens are able to remain viable on inert surfaces for extended periods of time, contaminated surfaces play an important role in SARS-CoV-2 fomite transmission. Cosmetic products are destined to be applied on infection-sensitive sites, such as the lips and eyelids. Therefore, special biosafety precautions should be incorporated into the routine procedures of beauty parlors and shops. Indeed, innovative cosmetics companies are currently searching for disinfection protocols that ensure the customers' safety in makeup testing. Here, we propose an ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) strategy that can be used to reduce the odds of COVID-19 fomite transmission by makeup testers. It is well-known that UVGI effectively inactivates pathogens on flat surfaces and clear fluids. However, ultraviolet-C (UVC) radiation at 254 nm penetrates poorly in turbid and porous materials, such as makeup and lipstick formulations. Thus, we investigated the virucidal effect of UVGI against SARS-CoV-2 deposited on such substrates and compared their performance to that of flat polystyrene surfaces, used as controls. Concentrated infectious SARS-CoV-2 inoculum (106 PFU/mL) deposited on lipstick and makeup powder was completely inactivated (>5log10 reduction) following UVC exposures at 1,260 mJ/cm2, while flat plastic surfaces required 10 times less exposure (126 mJ/cm2) to reach the same microbicidal performance. We conclude that UVGI comprises an effective disinfection strategy to promote biosafety for cosmetics testers. However, appropriate UVC dosimetry must be implemented to overcome inefficiencies caused by the optical properties of turbid materials in lipsticks and makeup powders.

BACKGROUND: Mutations accrued by SARS-CoV-2 lineage P.1-first detected in Brazil in early January, 2021-include amino acid changes in the receptor-binding domain of the viral spike protein that also are reported in other variants of concern, including B.1.1.7 and B.1.351. We aimed to investigate whether isolates of wild-type P.1 lineage SARS-CoV-2 can escape from neutralising antibodies generated by a polyclonal immune response. METHODS: We did an immunological study to assess the neutralising effects of antibodies on lineage P.1 and lineage B isolates of SARS-CoV-2, using plasma samples from patients previously infected with or vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. Two specimens (P.1/28 and P.1/30) containing SARS-CoV-2 lineage P.1 (as confirmed by viral genome sequencing) were obtained from nasopharyngeal and bronchoalveolar lavage samples collected from patients in Manaus, Brazil, and compared against an isolate of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B (SARS.CoV2/SP02.2020) recovered from a patient in Brazil in February, 2020. Isolates were incubated with plasma samples from 21 blood donors who had previously had COVID-19 and from a total of 53 recipients of the chemically inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine CoronaVac: 18 individuals after receipt of a single dose and an additional 20 individuals (38 in total) after receipt of two doses (collected 17-38 days after the most recent dose); and 15 individuals who received two doses during the phase 3 trial of the vaccine (collected 134-230 days after the second dose). Antibody neutralisation of P.1/28, P.1/30, and B isolates by plasma samples were compared in terms of median virus neutralisation titre (VNT50, defined as the reciprocal value of the sample dilution that showed 50% protection against cytopathic effects). FINDINGS: In terms of VNT50, plasma from individuals previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 had an 8·6 times lower neutralising capacity against the P.1 isolates (median VNT50 30 [IQR <20-45] for P.1/28 and 30 [<20-40] for P.1/30) than against the lineage B isolate (260 [160-400]), with a binominal model showing significant reductions in lineage P.1 isolates compared with the lineage B isolate (p≤0·0001). Efficient neutralisation of P.1 isolates was not seen with plasma samples collected from individuals vaccinated with a first dose of CoronaVac 20-23 days earlier (VNT50s below the limit of detection [<20] for most plasma samples), a second dose 17-38 days earlier (median VNT50 24 [IQR <20-25] for P.1/28 and 28 [<20-25] for P.1/30), or a second dose 134-260 days earlier (all VNT50s below limit of detection). Median VNT50s against the lineage B isolate were 20 (IQR 20-30) after a first dose of CoronaVac 20-23 days earlier, 75 (<20-263) after a second dose 17-38 days earlier, and 20 (<20-30) after a second dose 134-260 days earlier. In plasma collected 17-38 days after a second dose of CoronaVac, neutralising capacity against both P.1 isolates was significantly decreased (p=0·0051 for P.1/28 and p=0·0336 for P.1/30) compared with that against the lineage B isolate. All data were corroborated by results obtained through plaque reduction neutralisation tests. INTERPRETATION: SARS-CoV-2 lineage P.1 might escape neutralisation by antibodies generated in response to polyclonal stimulation against previously circulating variants of SARS-CoV-2. Continuous genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 combined with antibody neutralisation assays could help to guide national immunisation programmes. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder in postural and movement tone resulting from involvement in the motor centers of the immature brain. Thus, this work sought to expose the global motor, oral, and deglutition characteristics in children with CP. To this end, it performed a cross-sectional study of 100 children with CP. The data collection consisted in the detection of the main global motor and oral alterations, their repercussions on the deglutition process, and the main manifestations of dysphagia according to different consistencies of food and types of cerebral palsy. All children exhibited global motor and oral alterations. There were significant differences between age and global motor alterations. Alterations in the tongue mobility were more present in spastics (p=<0.031). The main manifestations of dysphagia, in decreasing order of occurrence were: premature liquids spillage (70%), cough (60%), decreased bolus formation in solids (57,9%), presence of food residues in the oral cavity (47,4%), increased pasty oral transit (47,1%) and presence of wet voice after the liquids swallowing (30%). Therefore, the influence of pelvic instability and compensatory patterns was observed in the presence of clinical signs of tracheal aspiration. Regardless the type of CP, the global and oral motor alterations lead to deglutition disorders. (AU)


A paralisia cerebral (PC) é uma desordem no tônus postural e de movimento decorrentes de um acometimento nos centros motores do cérebro imaturo. Com isso buscou apresentar as características motoras globais, orais e de deglutição em crianças com PC. Assim, realizou um estudo transversal com amostra de 100 crianças com PC. A coleta de dados consistiu na detecção das principais alterações motoras globais e orais, a repercussão na dinâmica da deglutição e as principais manifestações disfágicas em diferentes consistências alimentares. Todas as crianças apresentaram comprometimentos motores globais e orais. Houve diferença significante entre a idade e as alterações globais. Alteração na mobilidade da língua esteve mais presente em espásticos (p=<0,031). As principais manifestações disfágicas, em ordem decrescente de ocorrência, foram: escape anterior de líquidos (70%), tosse (60%), diminuição da formação do bolo alimentar no sólido (57,9%), presença de resíduos alimentares na cavidade oral após a deglutição de sólidos (47,4%), aumento do trânsito oral de pastoso (47,1%) e presença da voz molhada após a deglutição de líquidos (30%). Então, observou-se a influência das alterações tônicas e posturais na presença de sinais clínicos de aspiração traqueal. Alterações tônicas e posturais com comprometimentos motores orais acarretam transtornos da deglutição em crianças com PC. (AU)

Rapidly expanding road networks have been a key driver of the fragmentation and isolation of many wildlife species, and are a source of significant mortality due to collisions with vehicles. But not all animals are affected equally by transportation infrastructure, and in most cases little is known about the population-scale consequences of roads for wildlife. Even less information is available to characterize species' behavioral responses to roads. Although research shows that maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) in Brazil are experiencing considerable fragmentation and road mortality, the degree to which these disturbances are impacting the species' viability is unknown. The goal of this study was to analyze the potential effects of roads on maned wolf population size and structure. We used a simulation model to evaluate the population-scale consequences of individual maned wolf interactions with roads, which can result in road crossing, avoidance, or mortality due to a collision with a vehicle. We also forecasted where in Brazil these impacts might be most significant. Our model incorporated species demographic and movement parameters, plus habitat quality and a map of the road network. We found that even moderate rates of road mortality led to severe declines in population size, and that four specific locations accounted for a disproportionate fraction of roadkill events. Our approach will be generally useful for evaluating the relative importance of road effects on species conservation in many ecological systems, for prioritizing data collection efforts, and for informing conservation policies and mitigation strategies.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the aesthetic perception and treatment need in individuals of different ethnicities with various degrees of laterognathism assessed by orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and laypersons. METHODS: Three male descendants of different ethnicities were assessed, in which the mandibular deviation was manipulated digitally in different angulations (from 0 to 8°). The assessment was performed by three groups (orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons, and laypersons (n = 20)), and it consisted of scoring the degree of pleasantness of the images presented in a numerical scale and indicating or not a corrective treatment for the respective image. RESULTS: The higher the degree of deviation, the lower the scores assigned to the image (p < 0.05). Laypersons assigned the highest scores, with a significant difference between laypersons and oral and maxillofacial surgeons (p < 0.05). In terms of treatment need according to the group of evaluators, there were no statistically significant differences among them (p > 0.05). Moreover, the increase in degree of deviation increased the perception of treatment need (p < 0.05). The African faces received the highest scores, with significant differences from the Caucasian faces (p < 0.05). The overall tendency was higher treatment indication for the Caucasian faces, with statistically significant differences from the African faces (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The greater the mandibular deviation, the lower the aesthetic pleasantness. Laypersons are less critical regarding the assessment of mandibular deviation. There was no difference for treatment indication by the different groups of evaluators. In addition, ethnicity may influence the perception and treatment indication.

Reported here is the first evidence of plastic ingestion by freshwater fishes in the Amazon. Plastic bags, bottles, fishing gear, and other products are entering Amazonian water bodies and degrade into meso- and micro-plastic particles that may be ingested, either directly or indirectly via food chains, by fishes. Examination of stomach contents from 172 specimens of 16 serrasalmid species from lower Xingu River Basin revealed consumption of plastic particles by fishes in each of three trophic guilds (herbivores, omnivores, carnivores). Overall, about one quarter of specimens and 80% of species analyzed had ingested plastic particles ranging from 1 to 15 mm in length. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated 12 polymer types, including 27% identified as polyethylene, 13% polyvinyl chloride, 13% polyamide, 13% polypropylene, 7% poly(methyl methacrylate), 7% rayon, 7% polyethylene terephtalate, and 13% a blend of polyamide and polyethylene terephtalate. Dimensions of ingested plastic particles varied among trophic guilds, even though the frequency and mass of ingested particles were not significantly different among fishes with different feeding habits.

Mortality from collision with vehicles is the most visible impact of road traffic on wildlife. Mortality due to roads (hereafter road-kill) can affect the dynamic of populations of many species and can, therefore, increase the risk of local decline or extinction. This is especially true in Brazil, where plans for road network upgrading and expansion overlaps biodiversity hotspot areas, which are of high importance for global conservation. Researchers, conservationists and road planners face the challenge to define a national strategy for road mitigation and wildlife conservation. The main goal of this dataset is a compilation of geo-referenced road-kill data from published and unpublished road surveys. This is the first Data Paper in the BRAZIL series (see ATLANTIC, NEOTROPICAL, and BRAZIL collections of Data Papers published in Ecology), which aims make public road-kill data for species in the Brazilian Regions. The dataset encompasses road-kill records from 45 personal communications and 26 studies published in peer-reviewed journals, theses and reports. The road-kill dataset comprises 21,512 records, 83% of which are identified to the species level (n = 450 species). The dataset includes records of 31 amphibian species, 90 reptile species, 229 bird species, and 99 mammal species. One species is classified as Endangered, eight as Vulnerable and twelve as Near Threatened. The species with the highest number of records are: Didelphis albiventris (n = 1,549), Volatinia jacarina (n = 1,238), Cerdocyon thous (n = 1,135), Helicops infrataeniatus (n = 802), and Rhinella icterica (n = 692). Most of the records came from southern Brazil. However, observations of the road-kill incidence for non-Least Concern species are more spread across the country. This dataset can be used to identify which taxa seems to be vulnerable to traffic, analyze temporal and spatial patterns of road-kill at local, regional and national scales and also used to understand the effects of road-kill on population persistence. It may also contribute to studies that aims to understand the influence of landscape and environmental influences on road-kills, improve our knowledge on road-related strategies on biodiversity conservation and be used as complementary information on large-scale and macroecological studies. RESUMO A Política Nacional de Humanização do Sistema Único de Saúde tem provocado mudanças no cenário nacional com impactos também na rede de atendimento de urgência e emergência. Objetivou-se identificar os desafios da humanização dentro de Unidades de Pronto Atendimento na visão dos gestores. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório, descritivo com abordagem qualitativa, realizado por meio de entrevista semiestruturada e registro em gravador de voz, com 18 gestores médicos e enfermeiros. Para análise sistemática dos dados utilizou-se a proposta operativa para análise de dados qualitativos. Emergindo as seguintes categorias: a Política Nacional de Humanização nas Unidades de Pronto Atendimento na visão dos gestores; fatores influentes que interferem no processo de humanização; e ações dos gestores na promoção da humanização nas Unidades de Pronto Atendimento. Constatou-se que a política nacional de humanização do SUS não está clara para todos os gestores, os quais indicam como fatores prejudiciais para humanização a elevada demanda de usuários, os fatores pessoais dos profissionais e dos usuários e as condições de serviço ofertadas. Manter-se presente nos serviços de saúde e desenvolver atividades de capacitação e orientação são atitudes positivas na visão dos gestores para o desenvolvimento da humanização.


RESUMEN La Política Nacional de Humanización del Sistema Único de Salud (SUS) ha provocado cambios en el escenario nacional con impactos también en la red de atención de urgencia y emergencia. El objetivo fue identificar los desafíos de la humanización dentro de Unidades de Pronta Atención en la visión de los gestores. Se trata de un estudio exploratorio, descriptivo con abordaje cualitativo, realizado por medio de entrevista semiestructurada y registro en grabador de voz, con 18 gestores médicos y enfermeros. Para el análisis sistemático de los datos se utilizó la propuesta operativa para análisis de datos cualitativos, llegando a las siguientes categorías: la Política Nacional de Humanización en las Unidades de Pronta Atención en la visión de los gestores; factores influyentes que interfieren en el proceso de humanización; y acciones de los gestores en la promoción de la humanización en las Unidades de Pronta Atención. Se constató que la política nacional de humanización del SUS no está clara para todos los gestores, quienes indican como factores perjudiciales para humanización la elevada demanda de usuarios, los factores personales de los profesionales y de los usuarios y las condiciones de servicio ofrecidas. Mantenerse presente en los servicios de salud y desarrollar actividades de capacitación y orientación son actitudes positivas en la visión de los gestores para el desarrollo de la humanización. ABSTRACT The National Policy of humanization of the unified Health System has provoked changes in the national scenario with also impacts on the urgent and emergency care. The aim was to identify the challenges of humanization in units of Ready Attendance of managers. This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach, carried out through semi-structured interview and record in voice recorder, with 18 doctors and nurses' managers. For systematic analysis of the data using the operational proposal for qualitative data analysis. Emerging from the following categories: National policy of Humanization in units of Ready Attendance of managers; influential factors that interfere in the process of humanization; and actions of managers in promoting humanization in units of Er. It was noted that the national policy of humanization of the SUS is not clear for all managers, which indicate how harmful factors for humanizing the high demand of users, the personal factors of professionals and users and the conditions of offered service. Keep this at health services and develop training and guidance activities are positive attitudes of managers for the development of humanization.

This study compared the perception of facial pleasantness and the need for intervention, as assessed by orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial (OMF) surgeons, and laypersons, in people of different ethnicities showing varying degrees of simulated laterognathism. Facial photographs were modified to simulate deviations in the lower face of women of African, Asian and Caucasian descent, ascending in two-degree steps from zero to eight degrees of deviation. Three groups of 20 individuals each (OMF surgeons, orthodontists, and laypersons) assessed the images and rated facial pleasantness on a numerical scale ranging from 0 to 10. The results showed that orthodontists and laypersons rated faces differently only after six and eight degrees of facial change. OMF surgeons rated faces statistically differently from laypersons in all degrees of deviation, and differently from orthodontists in faces with zero, two, and four degrees of deviation. Scores for Caucasian and Asian faces differed only at two degrees of deviation. On the other hand, Caucasian and African faces differed at two and four degrees of deviation, while African and Asian faces differed only at eight degrees. The results suggest that, as a group, OMF surgeons were able to detect all degrees of lower face deviation. Moreover, orthodontists and OMF surgeons seemed to agree in terms of need for facial intervention, and saw that need more often than laypersons. In addition, ethnicity also affected the perception of milder facial changes.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a flavivirus that has recently been associated with an increased incidence of neonatal microcephaly and other neurological disorders. The virus is primarily transmitted by mosquito bite, although other routes of infection have been implicated in some cases. The Aedes aegypti mosquito is considered to be the main vector to humans worldwide; however, there is evidence that other mosquito species, including Culex quinquefasciatus, transmit the virus. To test the potential of Cx. quinquefasciatus to transmit ZIKV, we experimentally compared the vector competence of laboratory-reared Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus. Interestingly, we were able to detect the presence of ZIKV in the midgut, salivary glands and saliva of artificially fed Cx. quinquefasciatus. In addition, we collected ZIKV-infected Cx. quinquefasciatus from urban areas with high microcephaly incidence in Recife, Brazil. Corroborating our experimental data from artificially fed mosquitoes, ZIKV was isolated from field-caught Cx. quinquefasciatus, and its genome was partially sequenced. Collectively, these findings indicate that there may be a wider range of ZIKV vectors than anticipated.

The need for greater understanding of subjective standards of beauty is important when combining a successful dental plan with the real needs of patients. This study aimed to perform a systematic review to assess whether dentists are more critical in assessing facial esthetics than laypersons. The cross-sectional studies selected compared dentists and laypersons regarding the perception of facial changes through photographs. The survey was conducted in four databases (PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and OpenGrey) with no restriction of time or language, and was assessed by two reviewers who were based on the PVO strategy. Then, a manual search through the references of the selected articles was performed in order to find surveys that did not fit in said search strategy. The examiners assessed the risk of bias and quality in individual studies. The process of data synthesis was performed through a descriptive analysis of the selected studies. Three relevant articles were selected from an initial total of 979 articles collected. Most studies found that dentists were more critical than laypersons; however, facial modifications were different. Only one survey manipulated the changes on a computer, while the others worked with changes on the patient. Given the methodological diversity of the studies, it was not possible to establish a parameter to validate the results presented.


A necessidade de uma maior compreensão dos padrões subjetivos da beleza é importante quando se combina um plano odontológico de sucesso com as necessidades reais dos pacientes. Este estudo teve como objetivo realizar uma revisão sistemática para avaliar se dentistas são mais exigentes na avaliação da estética facial do que os leigos. Os estudos transversais selecionados compararam dentistas e leigos em relação à percepção de alterações faciais através de fotografias. A pesquisa foi realizada em quatro bases de dados (PubMed, SciELO, LILACS e OpenGrey), sem restrição de tempo ou de idioma, e foi realizada por dois revisores que utilizaram como referência a estratégia PVO. Em seguida, foi realizada uma busca manual através das referências dos artigos selecionados, a fim de encontrar pesquisas que não se encaixavam na referida estratégia de busca. Os examinadores avaliaram o risco de viés e qualidade nos estudos individuais. O processo de síntese dos dados foi realizado através de uma análise descritiva dos estudos selecionados. Três artigos relevantes foram selecionados de um total inicial de 979 artigos coletados. A maioria dos estudos revelou que os dentistas eram mais críticos do que os leigos; no entanto, as modificações faciais eram diferentes. Apenas uma pesquisa manipulou as alterações em um computador, enquanto as outras trabalharam com mudanças no paciente. Diante da diversidade metodológica dos estudos, não foi possível estabelecer um parâmetro para validação dos resultados apresentados.
