A close control is needed over large nerve trunks and plexuses in the course of their area radiation in cancer patients to prevent radiation damage to peripheral nervous system. Rehabilitation of patients with radiation-induced plexitis and neuritis urges early diagnosis and treatment as essential conditions for adequate recovery of the limb function. Diagnosis of radiation damage to peripheral nervous system should rest on clinical electrophysiological findings defining the degree of the nerve fiber injury and predict treatment outcomes.

Radiation-induced sarcomas of the clavicle following treatment of Hodgkin's disease. Report of two cases.

Two patients who received combined chemo- and radiotherapy for Hodgkin's disease developed secondary tumors in irradiated fields by 15 and 24 years, respectively. All the necessary criteria for the diagnosis of radiation-induced sarcoma have been found.

[Ultrasonic examination in secondary lymphedema of the lower extremities]. / Ul'trazvukovoe issledovanie pri vtorichnoi limfedeme nizhnikh konechnostei.

The article deals with the results of ultrasonic examination (USE) of 39 patients with secondary edema of the lower extremities. The authors developed a USE method which yields objective data characterizing changes of the structure, thickness, boundaries, and firmness of the soft tissues in lymphedema of the lower extremities of various severity. It was established that lymphostasis produced a characteristic ultrasonic pattern, which, as claimed by the author, may be used in differential diagnosis of lymphatic and venous edema of the extremities.

[Intrapelvic radiation fibrosis]. / Vnutritazovyi luchevoi fibroz.

The paper presents the results of diagnosis and treatment of 155 patients with intrapelvic radiation fibrosis (IRF). IRF mainly manifests itself as a disorder of the urinary function. The use of presacral disorders in complex treatment increases the efficacy of therapeutic measures.

[Pathological reconstruction of the tibia after radiotherapy]. / Patologicheskaia perestroika struktury bol'shebertsovoi kosti posle luchevogo lecheniia.

In 6 patients with sarcomas of the bones of the crus at different periods following radiotherapy the authors have revealed pathologic reconstruction of the structure of the tibia. A roentgenologic picture of the changes in the course of the dynamic observation of the patients and their treatment is presented. It has been demonstrated that the conservative treatment effective.

[Acupuncture in edema of the extremities following radiation or combination therapy of cancer of the breast and uterus]. / Akupunktura pri otekakh konechnostei posle luchevogo ili kombinirovannoto lecheniia raka molochnoi zhelezy i matki.

Acupuncture was carried out in 141 sufferers from late-onset radiation injuries to skin and soft tissues. 122 patients (86%) revealed clinical manifestations of edema of varying gravity in arms and legs, while 19 (14%) suffered radiation-induced neuritis or plexitis unaccompanied by edema. Radionuclide and rheographic studies as well as evaluation of hemostatic function showed acupuncture to be an effective treatment for edema and pain. It also improved lymph flow, rheovasographic indexes and normalized hemostasis. The best results were obtained in cases of stage I-II edema.

The paper is concerned with the results of examination and treatment of 140 patients with late radiation injuries of the lungs developing in a late period after combined treatment (operation + radiotherapy) of breast cancer. The sooner the treatment was initiated, the more effective it was.

An experience with examination and treatment of 314 cases of late-onset intestinal lesions which developed following radiotherapy of abdominal and pelvic cavity tumors are discussed.

[Lymphostasis of the lower extremities following the radiation or combined treatment of malignant tumors]. / Limfostaz nizhnikh konechnostei posle luchevogo ili kombinirovannogo lecheniia zlokachestvennykh opukholei.

The authors analysed the results of a lymphatic and phlebographic study of 76 patients with lymphostasis of the lower limbs, I-IV degree, developing at varying time after combined modality (50 patients) or radiation therapy (26 patients) of malignant tumors, mainly pelvic and peritoneal. Lymphostasis development was determined by injury to the lymphatic collectors only or their combination with injury to the major veins. Therapeutic tactics should be selected taking account of the nature to injury of the lymphatic and venous vessels, the state of the compensatory mechanisms and the degree of compensation of the lymph- and blood outflow.

The authors have summed up their experience gained in the diagnosis and treatment of radiation injuries of the head and maxillofacial region developing after radiotherapy of malignant tumors (105 patients) and non-tumorous diseases (47 patients).
