RESUMO

The impact of ionic liquids (ILs) on polar reactions is well recognised, however the impact of ILs on non-polar reactions is less well understood or explored. Pericyclic Cope rearrangements are highly concerted, exhibit minimal charge localisation and pass through an uncharged but well-defined transition state, and thus provide a good mechanism for exploring the impact of IL polarizability on chemical reactivity. Recently, a 10× rate enhancement has been observed for the Cope rearrangement of 3-phenyl-1,5-hexadiene in the IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [C4C1im][NTf2] compared to benzene. In this work we undertake a DFT based computational study (B3LYP-D3BJ/6-311+G(d,p) and M06-2X-D3/6-311+G(d,p)) of the Cope rearrangement of 3-phenyl-1,5-hexadiene and 3-propyl-hexa-1,5-diene in molecular solvents (acetonitrile, benzene and ethanol) and the IL [C4C1im][NTf2] using the SMD solvation model. The impact of benzene and [C4C1im][NTf2] on the Cope rearrangement of 3-phenyl-1,5-hexadiene is studied in more detail and we provide insight into the reason for the rate enhancement in an IL. The volume of activation is evaluated and the potential impact of 'solvent pressure' is discussed. We identify two potential mechanisms for volume effects to contribute to the rate enhancement. Solvent association energies are evaluated at the DLNPO-CCSD(T) level. Specific solvent interactions are explored through atomic partial charge, molecular orbital and bond critical point analysis, as well as via non-colvalent interaction (NCI) plots, electrostatic potential (ESP) differences and density difference Δρ(r) plots. We find that the cation and anion together form an extensive van der Waals pocket in-which the transition state (TS) sits. Electron density within the TS is anisotropically polarised via a 'push-pull' effect due to the dual cation-anion nature of the IL, stabilising the TS relative to benzene. We also provide experimental evidence that these effects are generalisable to other ILs. Overall, our aim is to provide a deeper moleuclar level understanding of the impact of ILs on non-polar reactions.

RESUMO

The ability of pulsed nature of synchrotron radiation opens up the possibility of studying microsecond dynamics in complex materials via speckle-based techniques. Here, we present the study of measuring the dynamics of a colloidal system by combining single and multiple X-ray pulses of a storage ring. In addition, we apply speckle correlation techniques at various pulse patterns to collect correlation functions from nanoseconds to milliseconds. The obtained sample dynamics from all correlation techniques at different pulse patterns are in very good agreement with the expected dynamics of Brownian motions of silica nanoparticles in water. Our study will pave the way for future pulsed X-ray investigations at various synchrotron X-ray sources using individual X-ray pulse patterns.

RESUMO

Ionic liquids are attractive liquid materials for many advanced applications. For targeted design, in-depth knowledge about their structure-property-relations is urgently needed. We prepared a set of novel protic ionic liquids (PILs) with a guanidinium cation with either an ether or alkyl side chain and different anions. While being a promising cation class, the available data is insufficient to guide design. We measured thermal and transport properties, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra as well as liquid and crystalline structures supported by ab initio computations and were able to obtain a detailed insight into the influence of the anion and the ether substitution on the physical and spectroscopic properties. For the PILs, hydrogen bonding is the main interaction between cation and anion and the H-bond strength is inversely related to the proton affinity of the constituting acid and correlated to the increase of 1H and 15N chemical shifts. Using anions from acids with lower proton affinity leads to proton localization on the cation as evident from NMR spectra and self-diffusion coefficients. In contrast, proton exchange was evident in ionic liquids with triflate and trifluoroacetate anions. Using imide-type anions and ether side groups decreases glass transitions as well as fragility, and accelerated dynamics significantly. In case of the ether guanidinium ionic liquids, the conformation of the side chain adopts a curled structure as the result of dispersion interactions, while the alkyl chains prefer a linear arrangement.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The availability of highly automated driving functions will vastly change the seating configuration in future vehicles. A reclined and rearward-facing seating position could become one of the popular seating positions. The occupant safety needs to be addressed in these novel seating configurations, as novel occupant loading conditions occur and the current standards as well as regulations are not fully applicable. METHOD: Twelve finite element simulations using a series production seat model and a state of the art 50th percentile male human body model were conducted to investigate the influences of various parameters on the occupant kinematics and injury risk. The varied parameters included the seatback angle, impact speed, and seatback rotational stiffness. RESULTS: The seat model shows a large seatback rotation angle during the frontal crash scenario with high impact speed. A reclining of the seatback angle leads to no significant increase of the injury risk for the assessed injury values. However, the reclining does affect the interaction among the occupant, seatbelt, and seatback. An increase of the seatback rotational stiffness helps reduce brain and chest injury metrics, while neck injury values are higher for the stiffer seatback.

RESUMO

Ionic liquids are modern liquid materials with potential and actual implementation in many advanced technologies. They combine many favourable and modifiable properties but have a major inherent drawback compared to molecular liquids - slower dynamics. In previous studies we found that the dynamics of ionic liquids are significantly accelerated by the introduction of multiple ether side chains into the cations. However, the origin of the improved transport properties, whether as a result of the altered cation conformation or due to the absence of nanostructuring within the liquid as a result of the higher polarity of the ether chains, remained to be clarified. Therefore, we prepared two novel sets of methylammonium based ionic liquids; one set with three ether substituents and another set with three butyl side chains, in order to compare their dynamic properties and liquid structures. Using a range of anions, we show that the dynamics of the ether-substituted cations are systematically and distinctly accelerated. Liquefaction temperatures are lowered and fragilities increased, while at the same time cation-anion distances are slightly larger for the alkylated samples. Furthermore, pronounced liquid nanostructures were not observed. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the origin of the altered properties of the ether substituted ionic liquids is primarily due to a curled ether chain conformation, in contrast to the alkylated cations where the alkyl chains retain a linear conformation. Thus, the observed structure-property relations can be explained by changes in the geometric shape of the cations, rather than by the absence of a liquid nanostructure. Application of quantum chemical calculations to a simplified model system revealed that intramolecular hydrogen-bonding is responsible for approximately half of the stabilisation of the curled ether-cations, whereas the other half stems from non-specific long-range interactions. These findings give more detailed insights into the structure-property relations of ionic liquids and will guide the development of ionic liquids that do not suffer from slow dynamics.

RESUMO

Rare coding variants in TREM2, PLCG2, and ABI3 were recently associated with the susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Caucasians. Frequencies and AD-associated effects of variants differ across ethnicities. To start filling the gap on AD genetics in South America and assess the impact of these variants across ethnicity, we studied these variants in Argentinian population in association with ancestry. TREM2 (rs143332484 and rs75932628), PLCG2 (rs72824905), and ABI3 (rs616338) were genotyped in 419 AD cases and 486 controls. Meta-analysis with European population was performed. Ancestry was estimated from genome-wide genotyping results. All variants show similar frequencies and odds ratios to those previously reported. Their association with AD reach statistical significance by meta-analysis. Although the Argentinian population is an admixture, variant carriers presented mainly Caucasian ancestry. Rare coding variants in TREM2, PLCG2, and ABI3 also modulate susceptibility to AD in populations from Argentina, and they may have a European heritage.

RESUMO

The Adaptive Gain Integrating Pixel Detector (AGIPD) is an X-ray imager, custom designed for the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL). It is a fast, low-noise integrating detector, with an adaptive gain amplifier per pixel. This has an equivalent noise of less than 1 keV when detecting single photons and, when switched into another gain state, a dynamic range of more than 104 photons of 12 keV. In burst mode the system is able to store 352 images while running at up to 6.5 MHz, which is compatible with the 4.5 MHz frame rate at the European XFEL. The AGIPD system was installed and commissioned in August 2017, and successfully used for the first experiments at the Single Particles, Clusters and Biomolecules (SPB) experimental station at the European XFEL since September 2017. This paper describes the principal components and performance parameters of the system.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment is a common and disabling non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD). The apolipoprotein E (APOE) allele ε4 is a known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and has also been suggested to be a risk factor for dementia in PD and even a predictor of impairment in certain cognitive domains. METHODS: A total of 447 PD patients (PD patients without cognitive impairment: n = 187; PD patients with mild cognitive impairment: n = 188; PD patients with dementia: n = 72) were included from an ongoing observational German multicenter cohort study (LANDSCAPE study). All patients underwent an extensive neuropsychological test battery, including assessments of memory, visuospatial functioning, attention, language, and executive function. APOE genotype was determined by an allelic discrimination assay. Linear regression analysis was used to explore the associations between APOE-ε4 and cognitive performance. RESULTS: The APOE-ε4 allele was not associated with a diagnosis of cognitive impairment in PD (PD with mild cognitive impairment and PD with dementia) or with deficits in specific neuropsychological domains in our study cohort. CONCLUSION: Our data question the relevance of the APOE-ε4 allele as a predictor of cognitive impairment in PD.

RESUMO

Alterations in DNA methylation have been associated with cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. A recent study of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) reported a significant association between annual decline in cognitive function and the rs11887120 SNP located in DNMT3A, a gene implicated in DNA methylation. Here, we aimed to replicate this finding in two independent MCI cohorts (n = 1024); however, no significant association was observed in either cohort or the pooled dataset. In stratified analyses for conversion to Alzheimer's disease status, no association between rs11887120 and cognitive decline was observed in either converters or nonconverters. In conclusion, our analyses provide no support for the hypothesis that genetic variants in DNMT3A are implicated in cognitive performance decline in individuals with MCI.

RESUMO

Variant p.R47H of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) has been associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). We screened this TREM2-variant in 821 PD patients including 261 demented PD patients (PDD) and in healthy controls (n = 919). Neither the entire PD nor the small PDD sample was associated with p.R47H.

RESUMO

Alpha-synuclein (SNCA) is a major risk gene for Parkinson's disease (PD) and increased SNCA gene dosage results in a parkinsonian syndrome in affected families. Regulatory regions relevant for SNCA expression include the 3' untranslated region (UTR), which among other regulatory elements contains several micro-RNA-binding sites. Interestingly, variants located in the 3' region of SNCA have been associated with PD in two genome-wide association studies. To test whether private mutations in this region contribute to PD, we sequenced the 3'UTR of SNCA in 1285 PD patients and 1120 age/sex-matched healthy controls. We found two rare variants, the one corresponding to the single nucleotide polymorphism rs145304567 and the novel variant c.*1004_1008delTTTTT. Although rs145304567 affects the putative-binding site of microRNA (miRNA) -433, the allele distribution was similar in PD patients and controls, and the expression of SNCA mRNA was not related to the genotype. Furthermore, a regulatory effect of miRNA-433 on SNCA expression levels was not detected.

RESUMO

We present a general comprehensive framework for the description of symmetries of complex light fields, facilitating the construction of sophisticated periodic structures carrying phase dislocations. In particular, we demonstrate the derivation of all three fundamental two-dimensional vortex lattices based on vortices of triangular, quadratic, and hexagonal shape, respectively. We show that these patterns represent the foundation of complex three-dimensional lattices with outstanding helical intensity distributions which suggest valuable applications in holographic lithography. This systematic approach is substantiated by a comparative study of corresponding numerically calculated and experimentally realized complex intensity and phase distributions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Photon beams used in IMRT treatments with high energies (>10 MV) are contaminated with neutrons. Measurement of this neutron dose is of significance to the overall risk estimate of high energy radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For measuring neutron doses a paired magnesium and boron coated magnesium chamber system was used. All measurements were performed inside the solid water phantom EasyCube using abdominal extensions. 4 different clinical treatment plans were studied. RESULTS: The measured neutron dose showed to be homogeneous inside the phantom and increased with increased number of applied monitor units. The sum over all fractions showed neutron doses of 1-2 mGy, depending on the kind of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Using large conversion factors of 25 Sv/Gy, none of the studied treatment plans exceeded dose equivalents of 50 mSv for the whole treatment. This dose equivalent has to be considered whole body dose due to the homogeneous distribution of neutrons.
