RESUMO

Schizophrenia is a serious and complex mental disease, known to be associated with various subtle structural and functional deviations in the brain. Recently, increased attention is given to the analysis of brain-wide, global mechanisms, strongly altering the communication of long-distance brain areas in schizophrenia. Data of 32 patients with schizophrenia and 28 matched healthy control subjects were analyzed. Two minutes long 64-channel EEG recordings were registered during resting, eyes closed condition. Average connectivity strength was estimated with Weighted Phase Lag Index (wPLI) in lower frequencies: delta and theta, and Amplitude Envelope Correlation with leakage correction (AEC-c) in higher frequencies: alpha, beta, lower gamma and higher gamma. To analyze functional network topology Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) algorithms were applied. Results show that patients have weaker functional connectivity in delta and alpha frequency bands. Concerning network differences, the result of lower diameter, higher leaf number, and also higher maximum degree and maximum betweenness centrality in patients suggest a star-like, and more random network topology in patients with schizophrenia. Our findings are in accordance with some previous findings based on resting-state EEG (and fMRI) data, suggesting that MST network structure in schizophrenia is biased towards a less optimal, more centralized organization.

Mismatch negativity (MMN) is an event-related potential (ERP) component generated when an unexpected deviant stimulus occurs in a pattern of standard stimuli. Several studies showed that the MMN response to both auditory and visual stimuli is attenuated in schizophrenia. While previous studies investigated auditory and visual MMN in different cohorts, here we examined the potential clinical utility of MMN responses to auditory and visual stimuli within the same group of patients. Altogether 39 patients with schizophrenia and 39 healthy controls matched in age, gender, and education were enrolled. We recorded EEG using 64 channels in eight experimental blocks where we presented auditory and visual stimulus sequences. Mismatch responses were obtained by subtracting responses to standard from the physically identical deviant stimuli. We found a significant MMN response to the acoustic stimuli in the control group, whereas no significant mismatch response was observed in the patient group. The group difference was significant for the acoustic stimuli. The 12 vane windmill pattern evoked a significant MMN response in the early time window in the control group but not in the patient group. The 6 vane windmill pattern evoked MMN only in the patient group. However, we found no significant difference between the groups. Furthermore, we found no correlation between the clinical variables and the MMN amplitudes. Our results suggest that predictive processes underlying mismatch generation in patients with schizophrenia may be more affected in the acoustic compared to the visual domain. Acoustic MMN tends to be a more promising biomarker in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Each brain hemisphere plays a specialized role in cognitive and behavioral processes, known as hemispheric lateralization. In chronic skin diseases, such as plaque psoriasis (Pso) and atopic dermatitis (AD), the degree of lateralization between the frontal hemispheres may provide insight into specific connections between skin diseases and the psyche. This study aims to analyze the hemispherical lateralization, neurovegetative responses, and psychometric characteristics of patients with Pso and AD. METHODS: The study included 46 patients with Pso, 56 patients with AD, and 29 healthy control (Ctrl) subjects. The participants underwent frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) measurement, heart rate variability (HRV) assessment, and psychological tests. Statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA, with Bonferroni correction applied for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: This study shows a significant right-lateralized prefrontal activity in both AD patients (p < 0.001) and Pso patients (p = 0.045) compared with Ctrl, with no significant difference between the AD and Pso groups (p = 0.633). AD patients with right-hemispheric dominant prefrontal activation exhibited increased inhibition and avoidance markers, while Pso patients showed elevated sympathetic nervous system activity. CONCLUSION: Psychophysiological and psychometric data suggest a shared prevalence of right-hemispheric dominance in both AD and Pso patient groups. However, the findings indicate distinct psychodermatological mechanisms in AD and Pso.

Tendency to experience inaccurate beliefs alongside perceptual anomalies constitutes positive schizotypal traits in the general population and shows continuity with the positive symptoms of schizophrenia. It has been hypothesized that the positive symptomatology of schizophrenia, and by extension, the odd beliefs and unusual perceptual experiences in the general population, are associated with specific alterations in memory functions. An imbalance between memory generalization and episodic memory specificity has been proposed on several counts; however, the direction of the imbalance is currently unclear. Here, we evaluated the association between positive schizotypy, and memory alterations related to hippocampal computations in a general population sample enriched for positive schizotypy. We found that memory generalization is attenuated while memory specificity is elevated in participants with more pronounced positive schizotypal traits. Our findings show that people who are prone to irrational beliefs and unusual experiences also show measurable alterations in memory and likely have difficulty grasping the global picture and rather be overpowered by fragments of information.

Subjects with high levels of attachment anxiety and neuroticism were proposed to be characterized by higher relative right rather than left frontal activity. Since sleep spindles are argued to reflect enhanced offline neuroplasticity, higher spindle activity measured over the right frontal areas relative to the corresponding left frontal ones could index higher attachment anxiety and neuroticism. Our aim was to explore the relationship between the lateralization patterns of frontally dominant slow sleep spindles and questionnaire measures of adult attachment anxiety and neuroticism. Thirty-four healthy subjects (male = 19; Mage = 31.64; SDage = 9.5) were enrolled in our preliminary study. Second night EEG/polysomnography records and questionnaire measures of personality (Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire) and adult attachment (Relationship Scales Questionnaire) were collected. Frontal slow sleep spindles were measured by the Individual Adjustment Method (IAM), whereas hemispheric asymmetry indexes of spindle occurrence rate, duration, and amplitude were derived as normalized left-right differences (electrode pairs: Fp1-Fp2, F3-F4, and F7-F8). Relative right lateralization of frontolateral and frontopolar slow sleep spindle density and mid-frontal slow spindle duration were associated with attachment anxiety, but spindle lateralization was less closely related to neuroticism. The relationships between frontal slow spindle laterality and attachment anxiety remained statistically significant even after controlling for the effect of neuroticism, whereas attachment avoidance-independence was not correlated with frontal slow spindle lateralization. Right frontal lateralization of slow sleep spindle activity might indicate attachment status in terms of the negative view of the self. OBJECTIVE: Patients with schizophrenia are characterized by compromised working memory (WM) performance and increased distractibility. Theta synchronization (especially over the frontal midline areas) is related to cognitive control and executive processes during WM encoding and retention. Alpha event-related desynchronization (ERD) is associated with information processing and attention. METHODS: Participants (35 patients and 39 matched controls) performed a modified Sternberg WM task, containing salient and non-salient distractor items in the retention period. A high-density 128 channel EEG was recorded during the task. Theta (4-7 Hz) and fast alpha (10-13 Hz) event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) were analyzed during the retention and encoding period. RESULTS: Patients with schizophrenia showed worse WM performance and increased attentional distractibility in terms of lower hit rates and increased distractor-related commission errors compared to healthy controls. Theta synchronization was modulated by condition (learning vs. distractor) in both groups but it was modulated by salience only in controls. Furthermore, salience of distractors modulated less the fast alpha ERD in patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that patients with schizophrenia process salient and non-salient distracting information less efficiently and show weaker cognitive control compared to controls. SIGNIFICANCE: These differences may partly account for diminished WM performance and increased distractibility in schizophrenia.
