Background: Patients with life-limiting illnesses receiving palliative care have a high symptom burden that can be challenging to manage. Guided imagery (GI), a complementary and integrative therapy in which patients are induced to picture mental images with sensory components, has proven in quasi-experimental studies to be effective as a complementary therapy for symptom management. Objective: To systematically review randomized controlled trials that report evidence of guided imagery for symptom management in patients with life-limiting illnesses. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline was followed for this review and the search strategy was applied in Medline, CINHAL, and Web of Science. The quality of articles was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration's Risk-of-Bias Tool 2 (RoB 2). The results are presented using the Guidance on the Conduct of Narrative Synthesis in Systematic Reviews. Results: A total of 8822 studies were initially identified through the search strategy, but after applying exclusion criteria, 14 randomized controlled trials were included in this review. The quality assessment revealed that four studies had a high risk of bias, nine had some concerns, and one had a low risk of bias. Out of the 14 studies, 6 evaluated oncological diagnosis, while the remaining 8 focused on nononcological diagnoses across 6 different diseases. GI was found to be effective in managing symptoms in 10 out of the 14 studies. Regardless of the disease stage, patients who received guided imagery experienced relief from anxiety, depression, pain, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. Conclusion: GI therapy has shown promising results regarding symptom management in palliative care patients with life-limiting illnesses at different stages.

OBJECTIVES: Ototoxicity is a common disabling side effect of platinum-based chemotherapy. This study aimed to assess the evidence on the management of platinum-induced ototoxicity in adult cancer patients. METHODS: Four databases were searched up to 1 November 2022. Original studies were included if they reported on a pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic intervention to prevent or treat platinum ototoxicity in adults. The articles' quality was assessed via two grading scales. RESULTS: Nineteen randomised controlled trials and five quasi-experimental studies with 1673 patients were analysed. Eleven interventions were identified, nine pharmacological and two non-pharmacological. Six of the interventions (sodium thiosulphate, corticoids, sertraline, statins, multivitamins and D-methionine) showed mild benefits in preventing cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Only one trial assessed corticoids as a potential treatment. Overall, only six trials were deemed with a low risk of bias. The majority of studies inadequately documented intervention-related adverse effects, thereby limiting safety conclusions. CONCLUSIONS: Current interventions have mild benefits in preventing cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in adult cancer patients. Sodium thiosulphate is the most promising intervention as a preventive strategy. Rigorous, high-quality research is warranted, encompassing an evaluation of all potential symptoms and innovative treatment modalities.

Introducción. La enfermedad de Erdheim Chester es un trastorno infrecuente, de etiología no clara y edad de presentación variable, que se caracteriza por la proliferación anormal de histiocitos no Langerhans. Puede presentarse de forma asintomática, con manifestaciones locales o como complicaciones sistémicas. El diagnóstico se basa en las condiciones clínicas del paciente, estudios imagenológicos y el estudio anatomopatológico, mediante el cual se confirma la enfermedad. Caso clínico. Paciente masculino con una lesión lítica en el séptimo arco costal, inicialmente asintomático y posteriormente con dolor torácico persistente. Se realizó resección y reconstrucción de la pared torácica, con resolución de la sintomatología y adecuada evolución posoperatoria. El resultado de la patología confirmó el diagnóstico de enfermedad de Erdheim Chester. Discusión. Se presenta el caso de un paciente con compromiso costal y fractura patológica como localización y manifestación inusual de la enfermedad de Erdheim Chester, tratado quirúrgicamente de forma adecuada, y sin aparición de recidiva. Debido a la diversidad de síntomas que pueden presentar y a la afectación de múltiples órganos, además de los estudios imagenológicos, la clínica debe orientar los exámenes complementarios, como electro o ecocardiograma, resonancia nuclear magnética, o angioTAC. En los pacientes asintomáticos se ha recomendado un manejo expectante y en los sintomáticos el tratamiento médico con glucocorticoides, inhibidores de BRAF e interferón alfa. El papel de la cirugía no ha sido estudiado a profundidad


Introduction. Erdheim Chester disease is a rare disorder of unclear etiology and variable age of presentation, characterized by abnormal proliferation of non-Langerhans histiocytes. It can present asymptomatic, with local manifestations or as systemic complications. The diagnosis is based on the clinical conditions of the patient, imaging studies, and the pathological study, through which the disease is confirmed.Clinical case. A male patient with a lytic lesion in the seventh costal arch, initially asymptomatic and later with persistent chest pain, underwent resection and reconstruction of the chest wall, with resolution of the symptoms and adequate postoperative evolution. The pathology report confirmed the diagnosis of Erdheim Chester's disease.Discussion. The case of a patient with rib involvement and pathological fracture is presented as an unusual location and manifestation of Erdheim Chester's disease, treated surgically appropriately, and without recurrence. Due to the diversity of symptoms that they can present and the involvement of multiple organs, in addition to imaging studies, the clinic should direct complementary tests such as electrocardiogram or echocardiogram, magnetic resonance imaging, or CT angiography. Expectant management has been recommended in asymptomatic patients, and medical treatment with glucocorticoids, BRAF inhibitors, and interferon alfa in symptomatic patients. The role of surgery has not been studied in depth

Abstract Human anatomy is a basic science which allows healthcare professionals (in training and graduated) to acquire a detailed and global understanding of what it means to study the human body. It provides a foundation in the technical language required for other basic, clinical and surgical sciences. The manner of teaching and learning anatomy has changed over time, and several pedagogical models exist which may be confused with didactic ones. The purpose is to observe educational aspects and reflect on the pedagogical models, resources and didactics used for teaching/learning human anatomy (history, the present and tendencies), recovering the value of anatomical knowledge in the training of doctors and other healthcare professionals. Current tools and new tendencies in anatomy informatics may complement, enliven and improve (but not replace) the basic pedagogical models of regional, system and clinical descriptive anatomy.


Resumen La anatomía humana es una ciencia básica que permite adquirir en los profesionales de la salud (en formación y ya graduados), una comprensión detallada y global de lo que implica estudiar el cuerpo humano; otorga fundamentación en el lenguaje técnico que se requiere en otras ciencias básicas, clínicas y quirúrgicas. La forma de enseñar y aprender anatomía ha evolucionado con el tiempo, existiendo varios modelos pedagógicos que se pueden confundir con las didácticas. Es propósito contemplar aspectos educativos y reflexionar sobre los modelos pedagógicos, recursos y didácticas empleadas en la enseñanza/aprendizaje de la anatomía humana (historia, presente y tendencias), rescatando el valor del conocimiento anatómico en la formación médica y de otros profesionales de la salud. Las herramientas actuales y nuevas tendencias de la anatomía informática pueden complementar, dinamizar y mejorar (mas no reemplazar) los modelos pedagógicos básicos de la anatomía descriptiva regional, por sistemas y clínica.
