RESUMO
Poisoning is the fifth leading cause of death from unintentional injury in the WHO European region, while Spain is in the group with a lower rate. Most involuntary poisonings occur in young children while they are at the home, due to unintentional ingestion of therapeutic drugs or household products. Of these, a large percentage is stored in non-original containers and/or within reach of children. In this article, the Committee on Safety and Non-Intentional Injury Prevention in Childhood of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics provides a series of recommendations, educational as well as legal, to prevent such cases.

Drowning is the second leading cause of non-intentional death in children under the age of 19 in Europe. Weather conditions in Spain allow an extended period of contact with water, therefore increasing the risk of drowning (due to the increased exposure), and constitutes the second leading cause of accidental death in children less than 14 years of age. In children younger than 5 years, drowning occurs mostly in pools belonging to private homes or communities, while in older children, drowning is often linked to aquatic recreational activities in lakes, sea, rivers and canals, and at times associated with alcohol consumption. In this article, the Committee on Safety and Non-Intentional Injury Prevention in Childhood of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics provides a series of architectonic, educational and legislative recommendations to prevent such incidents.

Treatment of psychostimulants leads to the development of behavioral sensitization, an augmented behavioral response to drug re-administration. The induction of behavioral sensitization to psychostimulants such as amphetamine and cocaine occurs at the ventral tegmental area's dopaminergic neurons (VTA-DA). Currently, there is limited experimental data about the physiological properties of methylphenidate (MPD) on VTA-DA neurons. Behavioral and electrophysiological experiments using male rats were performed before and after MPD treatment. The behavioral experiment included dose-response (0.6, 2.5, and 10.0 mg/kg MPD) study to select the most effective dose for the electrophysiological study. Methylphenidate increased locomotion in typical dose response characteristics. Based on this experiment, the 10.0 mg/kg MPD was used in two types of electrophysiological recordings: 1) intracellular recording of neuronal activity performed on horizontal 275-300 microm brain slices and 2) whole-cell patch clamping before and after electrical stimulation to study post-synaptic currents on neurophysiologically identified VTA-DA neurons. Methylphenidate suppressed the neuronal activity of these neurons for 210 +/- 30 sec. Stimulation of the prefrontal cortex afferent fibers to these VTA-DA neurons in the presence of TTX, saclofen, and picrotoxin led to the conclusion that this input is mediated via NMDA and kainate/AMPA receptors and may participate to induce behavioral sensitization to psychostimulants.

Anaplasma marginale initial bodies of the Florida strain were purified from infected erythrocytes using a combination of ultrasonic disruption, nonionic detergent and differential centrifugation. Immunochemical analysis revealed at least 12 A. marginale proteins in the molecular mass (m) range 81-15 kDa with a prominent band at 38 kDa. Several of these proteins remained insoluble in the presence of nonionic detergent. Preparations of purified Anaplasma initial bodies contained negligible erythrocytic contamination, as confirmed by the minimal induction of isoantibodies against bovine blood group antigens and the absence of delayed-type hypersensitivity to erythrocytic antigens in immunized animals. A total of 33 crossbred and purebred Holstein cattle were vaccinated with either 1.5, 1.0, or 0.1 mg protein of intact initial bodies, or with 1.0 mg of solubilized Anaplasma protein. The immunogens were supplemented with 3.0 mg Quil-A saponin adjuvant and administered in 2 subcutaneous injections given at a 4-week interval. A similar number of nonvaccinated cattle served as controls. Three months after vaccination, all cattle were challenged by inoculation of 10(9) virulent A. marginale of either the homologous (Florida) or heterologous (Venezuelan) strains. Vaccinated cattle showed solid protection after homologous and heterologous challenge, characterized by parasite clearance and minimal hematocrit reductions. Initial data from four field vaccine trials revealed a reduced incidence of clinical anaplasmosis among immunized animals. Use of immunogens consisting of purified A. marginale initial bodies offers a potential immunoprophylactic approach to control of bovine anaplasmosis.
