RESUMO

The current study investigated the post-abortion health behaviors of adolescents. Authors assessed the association between pre-abortion interventions and receiving post-abortion checkups and uptake of effective contraceptives. Participants were 172 adolescents under 19 years of age who were recruited pre-abortion at 10 hospitals in Israel and followed up by phone one and two months post-abortion. Results indicate that a quarter of participants did not receive a post-abortion checkup. The reported reasons for this were mostly personal, with very few cases attributed to accessibility issues. Rates of effective contraceptive use increased from the pre- to post-abortion periods but were still not high. Longer duration of pre-abortion counseling with a social worker, having the checkup where the abortion took place, and parental involvement increased the odds of having a post-abortion checkup. Getting a prescription for oral contraceptive pills at the time of abortion increased the odds of uptake one month post-abortion. Nonadherence to post-abortion recommendations is a problem with the potential to cause health risks and more unintended pregnancies. Effective social work interventions to promote behavioral change are needed, especially those based on theory and evidence.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To develop a better understanding of the right to health in old age through the personal knowledge and experience of older persons and professionals in Israel. METHODS: A qualitative research method was adopted based on focus groups. Information was collected through four focus groups with 33 participants. RESULTS: Three main themes emerged: The first focused on the older persons' self-positioning vis-à-vis the health-care system. The second illustrated the verbal means chosen by the participants to situate the health-care system itself. The third elaborated on the institutional and cultural processes involved in upholding health rights in old age. DISCUSSION: Future discussions regarding conceptualization of the right to health in old age should relate to its human aspects, that is, communication and interaction, and the older person's knowledge, participation, and involvement in shaping the medical services that they receive.

RESUMO

The goal of this article is to deepen understanding of the concept of professional resistance. Studies show that social workers in various parts of the world are increasingly confronted with regulations, programs, and policies that challenge their ability to carry out their professional mission in an ethical manner. Social workers may also find themselves under the pressure of periodic retrenchment resulting from budgetary constraints and subjected to worsening working conditions and threats of wage or social benefit reduction. Therefore, it is not surprising that social workers are sometimes required to engage in actions to oppose these negative realities or, in other words, to practice professional resistance. However, despite its growing relevance, the term "professional resistance" remains both theoretically obscure and marginal to social work practice. This article traces the presence of the concept in social work history, examines divergent uses of the concept in social work literature, introduces theoretical perspectives that may help practitioners enlarge their professional repertoire, provides concrete cases of resistance in different contexts, and finally proposes some paths to professional resistance.
