RESUMO

In the last three decades, there has been a considerable improvement in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) therapy. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is no longer a common cause of death for people living with HIV (PLWH) in developed countries, and co-infections with hepatitis viruses can be effectively managed. However, metabolic syndrome and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) are emerging threats these days, especially as the HIV-positive population gets older. The factors for MASLD development in PLWH are numerous, including non-specific (common for both HIV-positive and negative) and virus-specific. We focus on what is known for both, and in particular, on the burden of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for metabolic health and liver damage. We review data on contemporary drugs, including different groups and some particular agents in those groups. Among current ART regimens, the switch from tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) to tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) and particularly its combination with integrase inhibitors (INSTIs) appear to have the most significant impact on metabolic disturbances by increasing insulin resistance, which over the years promotes the evolution of the cascade leading to metabolic syndrome (MetS), MASLD, and eventually metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).

In the presented review, we analyzed the physiology of male sexual arousal and its relation to the motivational aspects of this behavior. We highlighted the distinction between these processes based on observable physiological and behavioral parameters. Thus, we proposed the experimentally applicable differentiation between sexual arousal (SA) and sexual motivation (SM). We propose to define sexual arousal as an overall autonomic nervous system response leading to penile erection, triggered selectively by specific sexual cues. These autonomic processes include both spinal and supraspinal neuronal networks, activated by sensory pathways including information from sexual partner and sexual context, as well as external and internal genital organs. To avoid misinterpretation of experimental data, we also propose to precise the term "sexual motivation" as all actions performed by the individual that increase the probability of sexual interactions or increase the probability of exposition to sexual context cues. Neuronal structures such as the amygdala, bed nucleus of stria terminalis, hypothalamus, nucleus raphe, periaqueductal gray, and nucleus paragigantocellularis play crucial roles in controlling the level of arousal and regulating peripheral responses via specific autonomic effectors. On the highest level of CNS, the activity of cortical structures involved in the regulation of the autonomic nervous system, such as the insula and anterior cingulate cortex, can visualize an elevated level of SA in both animal and human brains. From a preclinical perspective, we underlie the usefulness of the non-contact erection test (NCE) procedure in understanding factors influencing sexual arousal, including studies of sexual preference in animal models. Taken together results obtained by different methods, we wanted to focus attention on neurophysiological aspects that are distinctly related to sexual arousal and can be used as an objective parameter, leading to higher translational transparency between basic, preclinical, and clinical studies.

The continuous development of novel materials for biomedical applications is resulting in an increasingly better prognosis for patients. The application of more advanced materials relates to fewer complications and a desirable higher percentage of successful treatments. New, innovative materials being considered for biomedical applications are metallic alloys with an amorphous internal structure called metallic glasses. They are currently in a dynamic phase of development both in terms of formulating new chemical compositions and testing their properties in terms of intended biocompatibility. This review article intends to synthesize the latest research results in the field of biocompatible metallic glasses to create a more coherent picture of these materials. It summarizes and discusses the most recent findings in the areas of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, in vitro cellular studies, antibacterial properties, and in vivo animal studies. Results are collected mainly for the most popular metallic glasses manufactured as thin films, coatings, and in bulk form. Considered materials include alloys based on zirconium and titanium, as well as new promising ones based on magnesium, tantalum, and palladium. From the properties of the examined metallic glasses, possible areas of application and further research directions to fill existing gaps are proposed.

Ultrasonic vocalization (USV) is one of the measurable behavioral parameters of sociosexual interactions in rats. To precisely and accurately describe the neurobehavioral properties of USV and the potentially related specific emotional responsiveness of animals, we need to know which animals vocalize and what is their exact behavioral and physiological response. To this end, we modified the non-contact cage [non-contact erection model (NCE)] by adding a modification [vocalization-non-contact erection (VOC-NCE)] that makes it possible to assign emitted ultrasonic signals to a particular animal. Typically, the NCE cage consists of two compartments separated by perforated baffles. A male is placed in one section, and a receptive female is placed in the other section. This makes possible the accurate description of sexual parameters related to the cues controlled by the experimenter. In VOC-NCE, we completely separated the male USV from the female USV by three appropriately perforated baffles and located microphones combined with ultrasonic screening. We recorded emission in both typical bands, the so-called 22- and 50-kHz bands, with various subtypes, thus highlighting the utility of our protocol to investigate the sexual dimorphism of vocalization. Similar to the anticipatory model, we showed that emission can occur without acoustic feedback from concomitants during the VOC-NCE test. Therefore, we propose a relatively simple method for assigning individual vocalization. We discuss its usefulness and limitations in assessing vocal differentiation related to sexual parameters, adaptive changes during conditioning procedures, and further applications.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with Peripartum Onset was classified in 2013 by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DMS-5) and approved in 2019 by the World Health Organization (WHO). These diagnostic revisions call for the development of new animal models of maternal depression, emphasizing the pregnancy period. We have recently described a novel rat model of maternal MDD with a Peripartum Onset. Exposure to pre-gestational chronic mild stress (CMS) with repeated restrain resulted in maternal depressive-like behavior and impacted offspring's neurodevelopment. The present study examined gender differences in short- vs. long-term neurodevelopmental impact of pre-gestational maternal stress. Stress response was assessed in Sprague Dawley CMS-exposed dams (n=7) by metabolic, hormonal, and behavioral changes and compared to controls dams (n=7). Short-term impact of maternal stress on offspring was examined in terms of metabolic, neurodevelopmental, and behavioral tests in male (n=40) and female (n=35) adolescent offspring on a postnatal day (PD) 48; the long-term impact was assessed in adult male (n=13) and female (n=12) offspring on PD 225. Brain tissue was collected from adolescent and adult offspring for biochemical analysis. Maternal stress was associated with decreased body weight and increased urinary corticosterone during the pre-pregnancy period, but depressive-like behavior was delayed until later in pregnancy. No significant neurodevelopmental changes in suckling male or female offspring derived from the stress-exposed dams were observed. However, adolescent male and female offspring of stress-exposed dams displayed an increased depressive-like behavior and gender-dependent increase in anxiety-like behavior in female offspring. These changes were associated with a brain-region-specific increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) protein and BDNF receptor (TrkB) mRNA in males. Behavioral changes observed in the adolescents receded in adult male and female offspring. However, plasma BDNF was elevated in stress-exposed adult female offspring. These results suggest that pre-gestational maternal stress is associated with gender-dependent short- vs. long-term neurodevelopmental impact in the offspring. Presented data are of significant public health relevance, and there is an urgent need for further research to confirm these findings and probe the underlying mechanisms.

(1) Background: The study aimed to compare and analyse the differences between the features of prefabricated fibre-reinforced composite (FRC) posts and custom-made FRC posts in the form of a tape and confirm the necessity of using FRC posts in teeth treated endodontically in comparison to direct reconstruction with a composite material. (2) Methods: Sixty premolars after endodontic treatment were used. The teeth were divided into four groups (n-15). Group 1: teeth with embedded prefabricated posts (Mirafit White); group 2: teeth with embedded prefabricated posts (Rebilda); group 3 teeth with embedded custom-made posts in the form of a tape (EverStick); group 4: teeth without a post restored with composite material. The compressive strength of the teeth was tested using the Instron-5944 testing machine until the sample broke. The crystal structure of the investigated posts was detected with the X-ray diffractometer (3) Results: During the experiment, the maximum values of forces at which the damage of the restored premolar teeth after endodontic treatment occurred were obtained. The best results were obtained for teeth rebuilt with Rebilda Posts (1119 N), while teeth with cemented Mirafit White posts were the weakest (968 N). Teeth without an embedded FRC post, rebuilt only with light-cured composite material, obtained the lowest value-859 N. (4) Conclusions: The use of FRC posts increases the resistance to damage of an endodontically treated tooth when compared to direct restoration with light-cured composite material.

We verified the hypothesis of the existence of forms of individual-specific differences in the emission of anticipatory precontact vocalization (PVs) indicating individualization related to sexual experience and motivation in male rats. Long-Evans males were individually placed in a chamber and 50-kHz ultrasounds were recorded during 5-min periods. In experiment 1, PVs were recorded before the introduction of a female in four consecutive sessions during the acquisition of sexual experience. In experiment 2, PVs were analyzed in three groups of sexually experienced males: with the highest, moderate, and the lowest sexual motivation based on previous copulatory activity. In both experiments, the total number of ultrasounds, as well as 14 different specific subtypes, was measured. The ultrasound profiles for each male were created by analyzing the proportions of specific dominant subtypes of so-called 50-kHz calls. We decided that the dominant ultrasounds were those that represented more than 10% of the total recorded signals in a particular session. The number of PVs was positively correlated with the acquisition of sexual experience and previous copulatory efficiency (measured as the number of sessions with ejaculation). Furthermore, PVs showed domination of the frequency modulated signals (complex and composite) as well as flat and short with upward ramp ultrasounds with some individual differences, regardless of the level of sexual motivation. The results show a characteristic pattern of PVs and confirm the hypothesis that the number of PVs is a parameter reflecting the level of sexual motivation.

Microstructure, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility were studied for rapidly cooled 3 mm rods of Zr40Ti15Cu10Ni10Be25, Zr50Ti5Cu10Ni10Be25, and Zr40Ti15Cu10Ni5Si5Be25 (at.%) alloys, as well as for the reference 316L stainless steel and Ti-based Ti6Al4V alloy. Microstructure investigations confirm that Zr-based bulk metallic samples exhibit a glassy structure with minor fractions of crystalline phases. The nanoindentation tests carried out for all investigated composite materials allowed us to determine the mechanical parameters of individual phases observed in the samples. The instrumental hardness and elastic to total deformation energy ratio for every single phase observed in the manufactured Zr-based materials are higher than for the reference materials (316L stainless steel and Ti6Al4V alloy). A scratch tester used to determine the wear behavior of manufactured samples and reference materials revealed the effect of microstructure on mechanical parameters such as residual depth, friction force, and coefficient of friction. Electrochemical investigations in simulated body fluid performed up to 120 h show better or comparable corrosion resistance of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses in comparison with 316L stainless steel and Ti6Al4V alloy. The fibroblasts viability studies confirm the good biocompatibility of the produced materials. All obtained results show that fabricated biocompatible Zr-based materials are promising candidates for biomedical implants that require enhanced mechanical properties.

BACKGROUND: The primary reason for using a post is to retain the core with the objective to restore the missing coronal tooth structure. To achieve optimum results, the materials that are used to restore endodontically treated teeth should have physical and mechanical properties that are similar to that of dentin. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the strength parameters of fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) posts with the application of a three-point test. The mean fracture load, flexural strength and flexural modulus were taken into consideration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the three-point strength tests, 5 kinds of fiberglass root-posts were used: GC Fiber Post (GC America, Alsip, USA), Mirafit White (Hager Werken, Duisburg, Germany), Innopost (InnoTech, Verona, Italy), Rebilda Post (Voco, Cuxhaven, Germany), and EverStick Post (GC Europe, Leuven, Belgium). For each system, 15 FRC posts were tested. All posts had the same diameter, length and shape. The three-point test was carried out in accordance with ISO 10477:2004, using the Instron-5944 testing machine (Instron, Norwood, USA). The test was carried out until the sample was broken. RESULTS: The highest force values (67.6 N) were recorded for the GC posts, and the lowest force required to break the sample (29.6 N) was noted for the EverStick Posts. In the case of bending strength, the highest values were also recorded for GC posts (912.4 MPa). Low bending strengths were obtained for the Mirafit White posts (537.2 MPa); however, the EverStick Posts were the weakest (436.2 MPa). Rebilda posts showed the highest modulus of elasticity - 31.1 GPa. The lowest values of the elastic modulus were registered for EverStick Posts - 12.5 GPa. CONCLUSIONS: There were statistically significant differences in fracture loads, flexural strengths and flexural modulus of the FRC-post systems tested. Individually polymerized FRC material showed lower flexural properties than compared prefabricated FRC posts.

This study examined low-frequency ultrasonic vocalizations (lUSVs) in rats during two types of sexual interactions; postejaculatory interval (PEI) and barrier - noncontact (NC) test. We report distinct classes of lUSVs that can be assigned to different emotional states; relaxation vs. frustration. Totally flat, 22-kHz calls (Class A), were observed during the relaxation state following ejaculation; characterized by immobilization or grooming during the PEI. On the other hand, two-three component lUSVs (Class B) that start at a higher frequency (45-kHz: flat, upward or short signal) and then shift to 35-23-kHz (mostly to 28-23-kHz), correspond as we assume, to arousal and frustration - active states associated with sniffing a hole or exploration during the NC test. We suggest that momentary, abrupt decreases of arousal during the frustration state correspond to Class B lUSVs. The detailed spectral analysis of the high-frequency component of two-component lUSVs is crucial for establishing the relationship between such lUSVs and the corresponding behavior and emotional states. Our studies indicate that while the two-component Class B 22-kHz lUSVs may relate to the frustration state, a single component, flat, Class A lUSV relates to the relaxation state. The results of these studies support a notion that rats emit distinct vocalization patterns, reflecting their emotional states.

This review considers a link between prematurity and autism by comparing symptoms, physiological abnormalities, and behavior. It focuses on the bidirectional signaling between the microbiota and the brain, here defined as the microbiota-gut-vagus-heart-brain (MGVHB) axis and its systemic disruption accompanying altered neurodevelopment. Data derived from clinical and animal studies document increased prevalence of gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms in both premature and autistic children and suggest an incomplete maturation of the gut-blood barrier resulting in a "leaky gut," dysbiosis, abnormalities in vagal regulation of the heart, altered development of specific brain regions, and behavior. Furthermore, this review posits the hypothesis that common genetic variants link the abnormalities in the MGVHB axis in premature and autistic pathologies. This hypothesis is based on the recently identified common genetic variants: early B cell factor 1 (EBF1), selenocysteine tRNA-specific eukaryotic elongation factor (EEFSEC), and angiotensin II receptor type 2 (AGTR2), in the maternal and infant DNA samples, associated with risk of preterm birth and independently implicated in a risk of autism. We predict that the AGTR2 variants involved in the brain maturation and oxytocin-arginine-vasopressin (OXT-AVP) pathways, related to social behavior, will contribute to our understanding of the link between prematurity and autism paving a way to new therapies.

Normal or dysfunctional sexual behavior seems to be an important indicator of health or disease. Many health disorders in male patients affect sexual activity by directly causing erectile dysfunction, affecting sexual motivation, or both. Clinical evidence indicates that many diseases strongly disrupt sexual motivation and sexual performance in patients with depression, addiction, diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disturbances with obesity and diet-related factors, kidney and liver failure, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep disturbances including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, developmental and hormonal disorders, brain damages, cardiovascular diseases, and peripheral neuropathies. Preclinical studies of these conditions often require appropriate experimental paradigms, including animal models. Male sexual behavior and motivation have been intensively investigated over the last 80 years in animal rat model. Sexual motivation can be examined using such parameters as: anticipatory behavior and 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations reflecting the emotional state of rats, initiation of copulation, efficiency of copulation, or techniques of classical (pavlovian) and instrumental conditioning. In this review article, we analyze the behavioral parameters that describe the sexual motivation and sexual performance of male rats in the context of animal experimental models of human health disorders. Based on analysis of the parameters describing the heterogeneous and complex structure of sexual behavior in laboratory rodents, we propose an approach that is useful for delineating distinct mechanisms affecting sexual motivation and sexual performance in selected disease states and the efficacy of therapy in preclinical investigations.

This study aimed to develop an animal model of human depression during pregnancy and lactation to examine the effect of maternal, perinatal depression on offspring development. Maternal depression during pregnancy affects up to 20% of women and is a risk factor for both the developmental and long-term health issues. It is often comorbid with the cardiovascular disease (CVD) that affects the uteroplacental circulation and impacts offspring development. More than half of the expecting mothers with depression use antidepressants that cross the placenta and may interfere with the neurodevelopmental programming. Thus, depressed pregnant mothers face a difficult choice whether "to use or not to use" antidepressant therapy, since both untreated depression and antenatal antidepressant exposure present increased risks of neurodevelopmental pathologies. The ongoing clinical debate presents inconclusive data, while the existing animal models of maternal depression do not include early gestational periods, and, do not monitor depressive-like behavior nor address the cardiovascular abnormalities. The presented model includes pregestational depressive behavior extending into pregnancy and lactation, periods that have not been previously examined. Rat dams exposed to pre-gestational chronic mild stress (CMS) developed a sustained decrease in self-grooming behavior, correlated with hormonal, behavioral, and cardiac changes persisting through the postpartum period. Preliminary data indicate neurodevelopmental delays, behavioral and cardiac abnormalities, and altered levels of both the brain and the heart markers in the offspring of stressed dams. Furthermore, the preliminary data predict that maternal pregnancy during the perinatal period is likely to impact the neurodevelopmental process in a sex-dependent manner. Thus the presented here model (PG-LAC CMS) fulfills both the face and the construct validity criteria for maternal stress-induced depression during pregnancy and postpartum that may facilitate further studies of the relative risks of untreated vs. antidepressant-treated maternal depression during pregnancy to the mother and her offspring.

It has been assumed that the 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are emitted by adult rats as a result of a negative emotional state. However, emission of the 22-kHz vocalizations by male rats has been also observed following ejaculation, which has a high rewarding value as shown by a conditioned place preference test. These observations suggest that 22-kHz USVs may also occur in response to a positive emotional state. The aim of this study was to determine whether the postejaculatory 22-kHz USVs are related to conditioning processes. The 22 kHz USVs were recorded in Sprague-Dawley males in the postejaculatory refractory period during conditioning processes to a new chamber unrelated to copulation. During the first session in the clean recording chamber, males vocalized marginally and exhibited intensive rearing behavior. From the second to fourth sessions, vocalization duration increased and the number of rearing decreased. Following established conditioning process, odor cues from foreign males, but not the familiar ones, resulted in decreased duration of 22-kHz USVs and increased the number of rearing. On the other hand, in the presence of mating cues (copulatory chamber and presence of the female), males exhibited increased duration of postejaculatory 22-kHz USVs and reduced number of rearing. These results demonstrated that the conditioning to the cues, both unrelated and related to copulation, is important for evoking postejaculatory 22-kHz USVs as well as the relaxation state. WAG/Rij rats are genetically selected animals that model absence epilepsy in rats. Ultrasonic vocalizations and sexual behavior - both ethologically relevant markers of reward system functioning - are poorly described in this strain. The aim of our experiment was to investigate reward-dependent precontact 50-kHz vocalizations (PVs) and copulatory behavior as well as the effects of opioid receptor treatment on such behaviors in sexually experienced WAG/Rij males and rats from two control strains: Sprague-Dawley and Crl: Han Wistar. We analyzed the effects of the opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone (3 mg/kg) and the agonist morphine (1 mg/kg) administration. Additionally, we analyzed the initiation of copulation in sexually naïve males before drug treatment. A significantly lower number of sexually naïve WAG/Rij rats initiated copulation. Sexually experienced WAG/Rij males differed at the control session (after physiological saline treatment) compared with Sprague-Dawley rats: WAG/Rij rats displayed more 50-kHz precontact vocalizations and had longer mount and intromission latencies, longer ejaculation latency, longer postejaculatory latency to exploration, longer 22-kHz vocalization duration after ejaculation, and longer postejaculatory intromission latency. Compared with Crl: Han Wistar rats, WAG/Rij males displayed longer mount latency and shorter 22-kHz vocalization duration. Neither naltrexone nor morphine affected PVs in all groups. On the other hand, opioid receptor treatment differently influenced the number of intromissions required to achieve ejaculation and 22-kHz postejaculatory vocalization duration in WAG/Rij rats than in both control groups. This suggests functional differences in the opioid system in this strain. As a result of the number of males that initiated copulation as well as the number of intromissions to ejaculation and 22-kHz postejaculatory vocalizations which all depend on D1 receptor activation, we suggest that the proportion of opioid receptor to D1 receptors in WAG/Rij rats is different when compared with the control strains. The reward system of Wag/Rij rats with absence epilepsy is sensitive to social rewards (high level of precontact 50-kHz ultrasounds) although this strain displays a lower level of sexual motivation (longer mount latency) compared with other control strains. A lower number of sexually naïve rats initiating copulation and longer mount latency in sexually experienced males could suggest a moderate depressive-like syndrome in this strain of rats.

Our previous work demonstrated that androgens in the medial amygdala (MeA) of castrated male rats maintained noncontact erections (NCEs), which occur during exposure to an inaccessible receptive female, for one week after implantation. The present experiments investigated the effects of implantation into the MeA of either flutamide (F), a blocker of androgen receptors, or of 1,4,6-androstatrien-3,17-dione (ATD), which blocks aromatization of testosterone. One day after implantation of F, fewer males displayed NCEs, and had longer latencies to the first NCE and fewer NCEs, and spent less total time in genital grooming, compared to the control group. ATD had only weak facilitative effects on some measures of NCEs. These results suggest that androgen receptors in the MeA play a major role in the regulation of NCEs and that the MeA is one of the neuronal structures that regulate male sexual arousal. Furthermore, it is sensitive to relatively fast changes in the level of androgen receptors stimulation.

As we found previously, changes in ultrasonic vocalizations in the 50-kHz band emitted before a female is introduced into a copulatory chamber (precontact vocalizations-PVs) and shortening of ejaculation latency (EL) in subsequent copulatory sessions are correlated and reflected acquisition of sexual experience in male rats. In the present experiments, we investigate the role of the D1 receptor in this phenomenon. First, the effects of a D1 antagonist and D1 agonists injected subcutaneously during the first sexual contacts were analyzed. The antagonist (SCH-23390) inhibited changes in PVs and EL as well as rearing (R) and mount latency (ML). Both agonists (SKF-38393 and selective SKF-82957) inhibited PVs also at doses where no effects on EL and ML were observed. Repeated injections of five agonists, with or without socio-sexual contacts, had an effect on later PVs and R (long-term effect) but not on copulatory performance during the subsequent four sessions. In the last experiment, a D1 agonist (SKF-82957, 0.5 microg) was injected bilaterally into nucleus accumbens (N.Acc) before each of the first five sessions. The D1 agonist in N.Acc facilitated initiation of copulation in treatment-naïve rats. Repeated administration of the D1 agonist into the brain had long-lasting effects on PVs, R and ML, probably as a result of long-term changes in neuronal structures involved in acquisition of sexual experience, in this part of the nucleus accumbens. Repeated D1 agonist administration probably inhibits/reverses sensitization processes in dopamine structures. The results indicate a role of D1 receptors in acquisition of socio-sexual experience and suggest independent neuronal pathways for changes in PVs and EL.

Castration of male rats causes a rapid loss of their normal erectile response to inaccessible estrous females. Previous studies had demonstrated that these noncontact erections (NCEs), a putative sign of sexual arousal, could be restored by systemic treatment with testosterone (T) or dihydrotestosterone (DHT), but not estradiol (E). We examined whether androgen delivered to the medial amygdala (MeA) of castrated rats would maintain NCE. In Experiment 1, males received bilateral cannulae filled with T, DHT, or E directed at the MeA. Control males had the same hormone-filled cannulae implanted subcutaneously and blank cannulae in the MeA, or they received T in the anterior forebrain. During the 2 weeks after surgery, males were tested twice for NCE and copulation. About half the males with androgens in the MeA had NCEs 1 week after castration, but few responded a week later. Closer proximity of androgen implants to the posterodorsal MeA (MeApd) predicted shorter NCE latencies. No males with subcutaneous androgen had NCEs in either test, and few anterior forebrain-implanted males did. Some males receiving E in MeA or subcutaneously had NCE in each test. In copulation tests, the type of steroid treatment did not affect the incidence of ejaculation or most measures of copulation, and the proximity of cannulae to MeApd predicted only the time from ejaculation to the occurrence of NCE during the postejaculatory interval. Experiment 2 showed that NCEs displayed by males with androgen in MeA occurred in response to estrous females, not spontaneously. The results suggest that androgens, perhaps augmented by estrogen, act in the posterodorsal MeA to facilitate NCE and its associated arousal.

Male rats were tested in an apparatus in which the goal compartment of the runway was connected with the start compartment by a one-way door. In this apparatus, the male spontaneously left the goal compartment containing the estrous female after a mount bout (the cluster of one or more copulatory events) and a new run started. This effect (the postcopulatory departure) seems to be due to the competition between the incentive value of the stimulus female and the runway. The dopamine D(1) receptor agonist SKF 38393 at the doses of 1-5 mg/kg sc significantly prolonged the time spent by the male in the goal compartment, while both run latency and run duration remained unaffected. Further analysis showed that the prolongation of the time in goal compartment results from increased duration of copulatory behavior accompanied by increased number of copulatory events. Although SKF 38393 did not influence the latency of postcopulatory departures, incomplete departures occurred in five out of eight males. In the free access to female conditions, the SKF 38393 did not influence copulatory performance, except for a reduction in the number of intromissions at the dose of 1 mg/kg sc. On the other hand, a significant reduction of postejaculatory ultrasonic vocalization was observed.
