RESUMO

Methyl-, vinyl-, and hydride-terminated polymers of the heterocyclic monomer, 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-2,5-disila-1-oxacyclopentane (c-M2E) were prepared by sulfuric acid-catalyzed, ring-opening equilibration with the end-capping agents hexamethyldisiloxane (MM), divinyltetramethyldisiloxane (MVMV), and tetramethyldisiloxane (MHMH), respectively. The molecular weights of the polymers were controlled by adjusting the ratio of monomer to end-capping agent. All of these polymers are oils and exhibit molecular weight-dependent viscosities that are qualitatively similar to those of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based analogs prepared by the same reaction using octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) instead of c-M2E. Vinyl end-capped polymers with a range of molecular weights were cross-linked by platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation with tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (DH4) to prepare a series of transparent solid elastomers with moduli that increase with decreasing molecular weight. These studies suggest that reactive polymers prepared from c-M2E may be useful resins in two-part curable elastomer formulations. Several experiments, as well as the over 60-year-old initial synthesis of this polymer, suggest that the recyclability of these resins and elastomers may be practical.

RESUMO

Climate change, especially weather extremes like extreme cold or extreme hot, is a major challenge for global livestock. One of the animal breeding goals for sustainable livestock production should be to breed animals with excellent climate adaptability. Indigenous livestock and poultry are well adapted to the local climate, and they are good resources to study the genetic footprints and mechanism of the resilience to weather extremes. In order to identify selection signatures and genes that might be involved in hot adaptation in indigenous chickens from different tropical climates, we conducted a genomic analysis of 65 indigenous chickens that inhabit different climates. Several important unique positively selected genes (PSGs) were identified for each local chicken group by the cross-population extended haplotype homozygosity (XP-EHH). These PSGs, verified by composite likelihood ratio, genetic differentiation index, nucleotide diversity, Tajima's D, and decorrelated composite of multiple signals, are related to nerve regulation, vascular function, immune function, lipid metabolism, kidney development, and function, which are involved in thermoregulation and hot adaptation. However, one common PSG was detected for all three tropical groups of chickens via XP-EHH but was not confirmed by other five types of selective sweep analyses. These results suggest that the hot adaptability of indigenous chickens from different tropical climate regions has evolved in parallel by taking different pathways with different sets of genes. The results from our study have provided reasonable explanations and insights for the rapid adaptation of chickens to diverse tropical climates and provide practical values for poultry breeding.

RESUMO

With the release of high-quality reference genomes assembled by long reads from the third-generation sequencing technology, as well as extensive re-sequencing and population genetic analysis, researchers found that a single reference genome does not represent the diversity within a species. The missing sequences on the reference genome result in an incomplete population genetic polymorphism map. The emergence of pan-genome can well repair the deficiency of single reference genome, which include core genome (responsible for basic biological functions and the main phenotypic characteristics within a species) and the variable genome (related to the genetic diversity or biological characteristics). According to the core and variable genome proportion, the types of pan-genomes can be either open or closed. Here, we review the current exploring of pan-genome for a range of species, to discuss the characteristics of pan-genome in various biological groups. The pan-genome of mammals are more likely closed, while the pan-genomes of microbes, angiosperms, and some invertebrates are likely non-closed. It is possible to complete the reference genome and obtain complete variation information through the pan-genomic study, which will contribute to the study of molecular mechanism for genetic diversity and phenotypic evolution.

RESUMO

The Chantecler chicken, a unique Canadian indigenous breed, is well adapted to extremely cold environments. However, its genetic characteristics have not been well studied. Here, we analyzed the whole genomes of 10 Chantecler chickens and 121 worldwide chickens, which indicated that Chantecler chickens were derived from commercial chickens and exhibit a high level of inbreeding. Based on a genome-wide scan, we identified two vital candidate regions containing ME3 and ZNF536, which are related to fat metabolism and nervous system in cold adaptation, respectively. We also found that the genetic mechanism of cold adaptation in Chantecler chickens differed from that of chickens from other cold regions, such as northern China. Our study indicated that specialized commercial chickens in the early 20th century contained sufficient genetic diversity to adapt to extreme cold environments over a very short time. These findings enrich our understanding of the adaptive potential of commercial species.

RESUMO

Cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is simultaneously water-repellent and highly permeable to water vapor. Unfilled and silica-free cross-linked PDMS films of variable thickness (8-160 µm) are prepared and their water vapor transmission rates and permeability values are determined. Vapor transmission rate increases as membrane thickness decreased from 160 to 15 µm, but does not increase further when the film thickness is decreased to 8 µm. Rate-limiting sorption is implicated as the cause of this effect and substantiated by a surface modification to enhance adsorption rate. Water vapor does not macroscopically condense on films thin enough to operate in this kinetic regime, and vapor transmission rates as high as 60% of the transmission rates through air are measured. A mechanism for water permeation is offered based on those proposed for nanoscopically confined water in carbon nanotubes and aquaporins.

RESUMO

Surfaces that exhibit the reactivity of silica toward surface modification (silanol condensation) were prepared by treating thin films and particles of poly(methylsilsesquioxane) with aqueous potassium persulfate at elevated temperature. Parallel experiments were carried out using a highly cross-linked poly(dimethylsiloxane). Advancing (θA) and receding (θR) water contact angles for all of these oxidized surfaces were θA/θR = ∼10/∼0°, and these low values remain unchanged for months. Reactions of these silica-like surfaces with a range of functional silane reagents indicate that the surface silanol concentration is sufficient to prepare covalently attached monolayers of similar surface density to those prepared using silicon wafers as substrates.

RESUMO

Difflugia are testate amoebae that use particulate inorganic matter to build a protective shell (generally called a test or theca). Difflugia globulosa were grown both in culture containing only naturally occurring theca-building materials and under conditions where synthetic particles were present also. The presence of monodisperse Stöber silica microspheres of 1, 3, and 6 µm in diameter or 4 µm polystyrene spheres dramatically increased the rate of Difflugia growth, and foreign microspheres became the overwhelmingly dominant construction material. Optical and electron microscopy of the 6 µm particle studies revealed that Difflugia construct spherical vase-shaped thecae with strikingly reproducible composition, morphology, and size. Time-lapse photography revealed construction techniques and masonry skills as Difflugia herded particles together, trapped them using phagocytosis, and applied the particles with biocement from inside the developing theca. The reported observations identify taxonomy complications, biomicrofabrication possibilities, and a discrete environmental impact of synthetic particle pollutants.

RESUMO

Visible light induces switching of surface chemical patterns based on hybrid gels of thermally responsive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) copolymer networks containing iron oxide nanoparticles. The swelling of these hybrid gels is reduced upon illumination (see picture), allowing controlled unfolding of creased features formed owing to an elastic surface instability.

RESUMO

Silicon/silicon dioxide surfaces containing 3 µm (width) × 6 µm (length) × 40 µm (height) staggered rhombus posts were prepared using photolithography and hydrophobized using a perfluoroalkyl-containing monofunctional silane. These surfaces exhibit water contact angles of θ(A)/θ(R) = 169°/156°. Water drops come to rest on a carefully aligned horizontal sample but roll when the surface is tilted slightly. No visible trail or evidence of water "left behind" at the receding edge of the drop is apparent on surfaces that water drops have rolled on or on samples removed from water through the air-water interface. When dimethylbis(ß-hydroxyethyl)ammonium methanesulfonate (N(+)S(-), a nonvolatile ionic liquid) is used as the liquid probe fluid (instead of water), contact angles of θ(A)/θ(R) = 164°/152° are observed and ∼3-µm-diameter sessile drops are visible (by scanning electron microscopy - SEM) on the top of every post of a sample drawn out of this liquid. We interpret the formation of these sessile microdrops as arising from microcapillary bridge failure that occurs during receding events and emphasize that the capillary bridges rupture in primarily a tensile failure mode. Smaller sessile drops could be prepared using mixtures of water and N(+)S(-). Microdroplets of N(+)S(-) were also observed to form selectively at particular features on surfaces containing square holes separated by ridges. This suggests that pinning sites can be identified using microscopy and this ionic liquid probe fluid.

RESUMO

Ferrofluids based on oleate-stabilized nanoparticulate magnetite in cyclic olefin carrier solvents were prepared. Puddles of fluids containing 20-70 wt % magnetite in 1,5-cyclooctadiene or dicyclopentadiene can be moved or positioned on surfaces or in vessels with moderate magnetic fields (inexpensive NdFeB magnets). The surfaces of puddles with concentrations >40 wt % distort in response to magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the puddle surface and exhibit pointed liquid asperities. The liquid surface topography (asperity height and number per unit area) can be controlled by the strength of the applied field. The cyclic olefin carriers can be polymerized by ring-opening metathesis, solidifying the ferrofluid samples in the shape of the magnetically distorted monomeric solvent suspensions.

RESUMO

The magnesium sea water battery belongs to a kind of reserved battery, which takes the active metal such as magnesium alloy as the anode based on the sea water as the electrolyte. Experiments of magnesium alloy sea water battery were carried out and its electrochemical performance was studied. Thin sheets of Mg-Al-Zn and Mg-Mn series of magnesium alloy were fabricated and used as the anode of magnesium battery. The discharging voltage and current were measured for different composition and thickness of Mg alloy sheet under various surface state, temperature as well as electrolyte. The effect of the temperature, the surface condition and the electrolyte to the electrical current and voltage were investigated. Anodic dissolution and mechanism of activation of Mg alloy anode were discussed based on surface microstructure observation. The feasibility to apply magnesium alloy sheet to highly effective sea water battery was verified.
