RESUMO

We present the requirements, design, and evaluation of the cryogenic continuously rotating half-wave plate (CHWP) for the Simons Observatory (SO). SO is a cosmic microwave background polarization experiment at Parque Astronómico de Atacama in northern Chile that covers a wide range of angular scales using both small (⌀0.42 m) and large (⌀6 m) aperture telescopes. In particular, the small aperture telescopes (SATs) focus on large angular scales for primordial B-mode polarization. To this end, the SATs employ a CHWP to modulate the polarization of the incident light at 8 Hz, suppressing atmospheric 1/f noise and mitigating systematic uncertainties that would otherwise arise due to the differential response of detectors sensitive to orthogonal polarizations. The CHWP consists of a 505 mm diameter achromatic sapphire HWP and a cryogenic rotation mechanism, both of which are cooled down to ∼50 K to reduce detector thermal loading. Under normal operation, the HWP is suspended by a superconducting magnetic bearing and rotates with a constant 2 Hz frequency, controlled by an electromagnetic synchronous motor. We find that the number of superconductors and the number of magnets that make up the superconducting magnetic bearing are important design parameters, especially for the rotation mechanism's vibration performance. The rotation angle is detected through an angular encoder with a noise level of 0.07 µrad s. During a cooldown process, the rotor is held in place by a grip-and-release mechanism that serves as both an alignment device and a thermal path. In this paper, we provide an overview of the SO SAT CHWP: its requirements, hardware design, and laboratory performance.

We present the design and laboratory evaluation of a cryogenic continuously rotating half-wave plate (CHWP) for the POLARBEAR-2b (PB-2b) cosmic microwave background receiver, the second installment of the Simons Array. PB-2b will observe at 5200 m elevation in the Atacama Desert of Chile in two frequency bands centered at 90 GHz and 150 GHz. In order to suppress atmospheric 1/f noise and mitigate systematic effects that arise when differencing orthogonal detectors, PB-2b modulates linear sky polarization using a CHWP rotating at 2 Hz. The CHWP has a 440 mm clear aperture diameter and is cooled to ≈50 K in the PB-2b receiver cryostat. It consists of a low-friction superconducting magnetic bearing and a low-torque synchronous electromagnetic motor, which together dissipate <2 W. During cooldown, a grip-and-release mechanism centers the rotor to <0.5 mm, and during continuous rotation, an incremental optical encoder measures the rotor angle with a noise level of 0.1 µrad/Hz. We discuss the experimental requirements for the PB-2b CHWP, the designs of its various subsystems, and the results of its evaluation in the laboratory. The presented CHWP has been deployed to Chile and is expected to see first light on PB-2b in 2020 or 2021.

Mechanical testing of two-part surgical neck fractures fixed with four different pin configurations was performed. Ten fresh, frozen, unembalmed humeri stripped of all soft tissues were used; the surgical neck was osteotomized perpendicular to the humerus long axis. Terminally threaded 2.5-mm AO pins were used to fix the fracture. Humeri then were tested in both torsion and bending on a custom-made jig using Instron 1331 to assess the rigidity of pinning constructs. In torsion, two lateral pin construct was significantly less rigid than all other pin configurations. The addition of an anterior pin to two lateral pins did not increase bending rigidity, but significantly increased torsional stiffness. The addition of two bicortical tuberosity pins or two bicortical tuberosity pins and one anterior pin to two lateral pins significantly increased rotational and bending rigidity. Results confirm clinical data, and the authors conclude that multiplanar pins are needed to augment torsional stiffness, and that the addition of two bicortical tuberosity pins enhances bending rigidity.

Post-irradiation aging of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is not well understood. Retrieval studies and in vitro aged specimens have shown oxidative changes along with increases in crystallinity. Critical analysis and review of the polymer science and polymer physics literature shows that while oxidation may be important during the first year post-irradiation, subsequent aging occurs because of initial gamma radiation-induced chain scission leading to eventual isothermal crystallization of polymer chains in the amorphous regions of the UHMWPE bulk. Mechanical properties of aged UHMWPE are not as yet clear and, until such data become available, gamma irradiation sterilization must be used with caution.

There are 300,000 to 1,215,000 high-school football injuries each year in the United States. These injuries have an important effect on player participation and health care costs. This study investigates what portion of injuries occur during the third quarter of a game, and if completing a warm-up and stretching routine after halftime reduces the incidence of third-quarter injuries. Intervention-group teams participated in a prescribed three-minute warm-up and stretching routine following the halftime break. The control group received no warm-up and stretching intervention. Fifty-five games with 108 total injuries were examined. Overall, ligament sprains and muscle strains were the most common type of injury (38%). In the nonintervention group, injuries occurred most often in the third quarter. Intervention teams sustained significantly fewer third-quarter sprains and strains per game (p less than 0.05), although no significant difference in total third-quarter injuries was noted. These findings suggest an association between post-halftime warm-up and stretching and reduced third-quarter sprain and strain injuries. We suggest a larger-scale, randomized confirmatory study.

Mechanical trauma appears to be one significant cause of the rapid intravascular death of cancer cells and, as such, could act as an important rate regulator for the metastatic process. Intravascular mechanical trauma to cancer cells is thought to be a consequence of shape transitions, occurring when they are deformed from spherical shape by entry into, and passage along, capillaries having smaller diameters than themselves. These transitions from spherical shape require increases in surface area; first, an apparent increase in surface area is accomplished by a reversible, nonlethal surface membrane unfolding. If this is insufficient to meet geometric demands, it is followed by a true increase in surface area, resulting in increased tension in the cancer cell surface membrane, leading to its lethal rupture.
